1969 Chevy Van Build #4. Fixing a leaky roof, rattles and vibrations.

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 13 มิ.ย. 2024
- I bought a 1969 Chevy Van off Facebook Marketplace for $800. It's been off the road for 35 years. In this video I weld up holes and screws on the roof to fix leaks then seam seal the interior braces and panels to stop squeaks and rattles.

Wall to wall carpet , a mini Frig , throw a bed in the back and paint Shaggin Wagon on it . Take it on the Power Tour .
Haha, Dalton is the first person I thought of when I saw all of the self tappers… but I wasn’t going to say anything 😂😂
Im really loving the Scooby Doo van build. Excited to see where this goes. That being said, im probably older than you but you remind me of my dad, he loved teaching about working on cars. He was soft spoken as you are and he was so knowledgeable just as you are. I love your willingness to talk to us in a way that we learn new things every episode. I apologize about the rant i just wanted you to know that you are one the best builders on all TH-cam. Thanks for teaching us weekend garage guys .
Thanks!
I don’t know shit about cars man. Watching your videos makes me want to restore one. Inspirational brother
It's a fun hobby
Great job Lee. Love the way you get after it. Just showed you don't need a big huge fancy shop to get something done 👍💯
Thanks
I really enjoy those older vehicles
Puppy friendly vehicle for sure
Love the fact you’re doing a Scooby-Doo van. I really want to comment on a video about 5 months ago. I have 85 El Camino and I had the exact same problem with my driver side door hinges.l’ve had the car over 4 years. I knew l had to get it done. I saw your video, then I went on line found some hinges. I just got through working on it today and man I am so happy! Got window adjusted to fit my seal and the whole 9 yards. Thanks for the inspiration !
good deal!
Good morning from Cape Cod ⛵ seam sealing all the ribs really made a big difference. A lot of times the little things make a big difference. That's a cool ass van Lee, I'm sure it's going to look awesome when you're finished, I'm looking forward to the series 👍✌️🇺🇲
It’s a lot better with noise….your doing a great job
They called it the mystery machine
My main man Lee is back at it! I’m watching and learning 👍🏿
The van is coming around!
Hell with them little round windows, just throw you a couple of them diamond shaped windows out of your shop door, and call it good😂Be creative on the cheap
Lookin good. You should come up with a Clunkers and Classics logo for the sides and the doors.
I think you should do an accent on this van that incorporates your pizza pizza! Just for fun maybe one spot. Great video man 👍🙋🍻
The Ford Thunderbird hand those round bubble windows.
White spray in bed. Ladder would look good on the inside of that Van. Yeah, just a suggestion, take care.
This is gonna be a cool project can’t wait to see you work your magic Lee 🤙🏻
Really enjoying the van build .👍👍
Thanks
Lee buy the front window seal, it's going to be worth it! Never know how long they're available for
Like the new intro!!
Do a good job on this van…. It’s worth it 😍🇨🇦
You’re so right about Dalton and his self tapping screws. 😆 you won’t get it perfect. But, better is great. Those old vans is just going to raddle some. Most of the noise will always be the doors. Really was not expecting a video. Think I have not seen those portal. Bubble windows in years either. Think I saw them in JC Whitney. Years ago. I Thought you were going on Power Tour again . Thank you Lee.
💕💯👊👍
I skipped Power Tour this year.
You are right there not no reason to put a lot of money into because you made get you back or not. Put a little money into them make sure run and drive. I like watching your show. God bless you and your family. From Jim
A little oil on the hinges and door mechanisms would help the rattling . I’m not trying to be a wise guy but I can hear the rattles and I have a hearing disability . You and Nikki be well and God Bless !!!
As always thanks for putting the effort into showing all of us how you do stuff. I helped a friend finish the inside of his vw van many years ago. He intended to live in it for a while. We insulated the walls and ceiling with sheet styrofoam and screwed down wooden 1" by 4" slats over all of it. Made it somewhat sound proof and it looked pretty nice once it was finished.
back in the 70s in the uk we did not have the back up your guys to do our vans so we used automatic washing machine doors as porthole windows just a idea john uk
hi lee the van is coming along great this van brings so much memories of my dads old chevy van he use to take us all 6 of us and my mom to the drive in movie. put a quilt in the top and we watch the movie from the top. my grand kids watch your channel with me they love when you show nikky.
Made it here for number 4
That's how i got new tail light lenses for mine but they didn't have backup lenses. The lack of interior has an effect on the sounds but the door seals can help some. Seat belts or old ratchet straps would be a thought for door straps. One thing to consider would be notching the drip rail in the rear corner area so that the water it collects has a place to go.
Door hinge gaskets is another should do kind of thing. Drain holes are another idea.
Enjoying the build Thanks
What a great build and a nice change after the Z28! Lots of creativity going on here!
Did you see anything like this on power tour?
Keep this van! Flame job, Cragar ss wheels! Full carpet, a cooler and a sleeping bag. You and Nicky would be set!
They sell un-tinted bubble windows for pets and kids playhouses. Dog Fence Window on Amazon or Ebay are about $25. But they are only about a foot in diameter. Seems pet supply or hardware stores could have something you could use if you really want those types of windows. Very interesting build, good to see pragmatic builds that a guy can do on a budget.
I'll have to check that out
Those rims fit that van perfect!!! Great video !!!! Thanks!!
Thanks
Hi Lee van is looking good
Thanks
That roof is looking a lot better already. With the screws removed and welded up.
Thanks
The Mystery Machine
"It's Gettin' there!" Lee
What's up Lee you're a hard worker man I've been watching you for 2 years Talking about gas tank problems I'm paralyzed and I have a wheelchair Van but I live in Cleveland Ohio the salt just eats the car's up my gas tanks all rusted out and I had to send it out to a company that wants $1500 to repair mine.
buy a new one off ebay
love it my man. we need some sponsors out there to send you some goodies!!
Glad you are going to revive the van. Awesome sure it will be a awesome one
I would cut n weld gas tank straps . Good job on van 👍
Awesome ❤
Scooby-doo van!
Lee, I’ve got a pair of new old stock round windows for you. I’ll go dig em out of my garage for you.
cool
I’ll send them down to you as soon as possible. Just send me some bumper stickers and we’re even.
I bought a Fel-Pro blue intake manifold gasket for a small block Chevrolet at O'Reilly's for $34.99 plus tax, I found one on eBay out the door for $15 so I brought the one back to O'Reilly's and get my money back I said I'll wait a couple days to say that 20 dollars 😅
I would also get metal bondo for the roof 😎 i have used it a few times and works great on all metals
At least you were not making porno music sounds. 🤣 Cool build so far.
G'day mate awesome lee I've learnt heaps from yoy thanks mate keep up the great work mate all the best 👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺
Thanks
Great. Paint. Job s. On. There. . Going job.
Amazon also has a round shed window that might work 33 each
Hi Lee, Normadic Supply has 12” round camper van windows part # VWD Port12 for 99$ each. Hope this helps
Check with steel rubber company. They will have any kind of weatherstrip That you will need
New sub..enjoying the build. I'll check out the camaro
Welcome aboard!
And new rubber will get rid of many rattles ...
Hello, there is not much i get from auto parts stores anymore, best bet is online for everything, parts store are just about a waist of time, when you can push basically the same buttons on your phone or computer to buy your stuff and ship it to your door.
The cost difference is the employees, trucking, store costs, and money that can get shoved in a pocket,
Suggestions i learned on my 14 i have, dont use any type of spray foam insulation or fiber insulation, that stuff retains moisture and will rust it out, the dynomat versions would probably be best and a new coat of paint, in lower areas.
Seats look good in it,
I hear ya. I don't bother going to my local parts store ( napa, carquest) get my stuff online for about half price.
I. Remember. They. Had. Hole. On. Side. With. A. Scop. For. Venting
Auto Parts Stores are ridiculous on their prices. Those bucket seats really look great, never under estimate the value of parts cars.
Goggle round boat port windows and u can find similar windows
Those things on the front should be window washing fluid nozzles
On Amazon they have port hole windows
Thanks.
I put carpet inside the side and back doors
Hey Lee, how about an old putting an old school looking roof rack on there to hide the worst of the roof ripples?
Haven't come across any
Have you looked into marine style window??Porthole don't know how pricey that type of stuff is but may be an idea.
I say use bedliner spray the whole top.peace....
That gas tank mounting method might be solid, but it wouldn’t pass inspection here in Md and a few other states. You can fab up some custom straps to fit the tank easily. Those ratchet straps don’t look sturdy . How well do they hold up in freezing weather, snow ice and road salt?? Nice work…
We don't have inspections, snow, salt or ice here.
Would you consider getting a tripod with legs so you could use both hands and we could watch without all the extra movements? Like the work you're doing on this old van.
sure if you want to edit it all
Hi Lee, what about using minimal expanding foam inside those square tube uprights? Might have to drill a few access holes but it will tighten them up.
maybe later
Put 2 sunroofs on it
On Amazon vwd universal porthole 12” window for van 99 each
👍
Marc martz galesburg,il marketplace 68 g20 texas van top white body blue,2 round windows ,aluminum wheels, like your vision has come to life
👍👍👍
Can you shoot foam into the pillars to absorb the rattle?
we get it! it rattles.
Should have put captain seats with arm rests. And you need a disability knob for steering wheel. That will make driving . Old seat belts for door straps. Find a station wagon roof rack
these "small" bucket seats barely fit, so captains seats wouldn't fit.
Lizard skin makes a spray on epoxy that takes the vibration out of sheet metal just like Jegs boom mats does
expensive, I bet
Those are connected to the rest of the wiper assembly that is why they won't come off.
The side and rear doors should be the same size as far as weather strip.
panel bond would have been my choice over seam sealer.
You have good luck with parts geek? I ordered LED headlights 2 years ago from them. I never got the headlights or my money back. I don’t know if it was 1 off situation or not but I been scared to take another chance.
go through ebay then you can get your money back if not delivered
did u evict the cats?
yes
Good. Job. On. Paint. Sorry. Letter. Dance. Around
👍👍👌👌✔✔😎😎
Why not paint it in Rustoleum bed liner? Covers a bunch of crap and looks good!
Maybe. It. Had. One. Those. Crank. Jak. . Look s. Like. It. Would. Fit. In. There
What happened with the cats?
4 are gone
When you done with it how much or you going sale it for
unknown but right now it's $5k and will only go up.
why dont you just make tank straps for the tank instead of the bodge job of ratchet straps and foam-that stuff is going to deteriorate over time and get loose
They say support your local small businesses lol ordering online takes away their business
Maybe they can support their customers by bringing the prices to the 21st. century, most of these parts places haven't got the memo yet. They are yet to realize that folks have options, you know since the Internet and all.
@@g-man7938 It’s all about greed
a buck or two higher I can understand but double the price!
not how much you make how you spend it do you got used hoses used parts in yard
I think you should really go apeshitt on this one. Small block or LS. Slam/air bag it , or go the other way, 4 wheel drive. Full shagadelic interior. Out of everything you have in the yard, this would be the hardest to replace, besides that fiberglass trailer thing you have.
,
Those straps are nothing more than seatbelt material. You certainly have no shortage of that around there. The van roof needs one of the aftermarket full roof canvas sun roofs.
You really can't beat up auto zone for not stocking antique van part's or the prices. That is far from their target customer. They'd be foolish to even consider catering to that market.
I beat up on them for doubling the prices on most parts. They don't have hardly anything in stock that I need, it's all ordered next day from a warehouse.
@@clunkersandclassics You think business is rough for you ? You should try being them.
Do a good job on this van…. It’s worth it 😍🇨🇦
