The Isuzu D-Max has now become a far more credible pick-up segment contender. Jonathan Crouch looks at the lightly updated version of this 'RG'-series model.
Ten Second Review
If you thought Isuzu pick-ups were a bit rough and ready, it's probably about time you gave the D-Max a try. Once, this brand was really one reserved for the requirements of pure commercial operators. In this rejuvenated 'RG'-series form though, the D-Max will also suit private buyers looking for an all-terrain utility vehicle that can play the lifestyle card, thanks to now-sharper looks, a smart cabin and solid drive dynamics. But it's still as tough as ever - which is why so many professional choose this Isuzu. In a marketplace full of pretenders, it's that rarest of things: the genuine article.
Background
Mazda no longer sells a pick-up truck in the UK but that Japanese maker has had quite a hand in this one, the third generation version of the Isuzu D-Max. It's the first time these two brands have collaborated together and the partnership seems to make a lot of sense. Isuzu can deliver the rough, tough practical design that pick-up folk need; Mazda can imbue that product with the smarter, more car-like cabin and better tarmac drive dynamics that most of them want.
This 'RG'-series model first went on sales in Thailand (where it's built) back in October 2019, but sales didn't really get underway in our market until 2021, two years on from which Isuzu treated this model to a light facelift, creating the version we're going to look at here.

Love how that canopy fits in just fine. Fine car, indeed
Great review, I was M on a lot of sites and These started to appear this year, it looks live a great value all-rounder, I would be interested in the auto version. 👍
Thank you very much for this review.
Glad it was helpful!
How much pulling power does one really need and how often will you use that torque.
I’m in the US and I would buy this in a heart beat, very cool truck
We get it as the Chevy Colorado.
Very well thought of kind of a review.
Where can I sign you up lol
This bakkie (as we call it in SA) is still unbreakable... simple, honest bakkie with a modern touch.... problem is - people don't seem to be sure whether they want a bakkie or an SUV
It was the previous RT D-Max that was badged the Holden/Chev Colorado, not the current shape RG, even though Holden used the 'RG' designation for their RT derivative. Maybe that caused the confusion?
Is it better than a Ford Ranger/VW- Yes. It is better built and far more reliable than these two. Is it better than a HiLux probably not.
it literally isn't, ride quality, tech, power outputs (nm), build quality way down on the Ranger.
but the reliability of the new ranger is shocking@@shaun1900
Your lack of knowledge on the subject is embarrassing, if you cannot afford a vw or ranger stick with the tractor clanging 💩box
@@tyzon00800 Your comment was embarrassing 🤣
@@shaun1900 When the going gets really tough the go to vehicle is not a Ford or VW!!!
Ranger pretender? Class leading, I thought.
I am sure the D Max will be tough and reliable - but having just driven a V-Max, (after a test drive in a new Amarok) it is basic and agricultural. Noisy engine, bouncy ride and feels cheap. Similar to the Hilux in many ways
I have a 1.9 D'max auto which I bought new in 2019. It's been great in the Scottish Highlands and I get 36 mpg which is awesome. My mate has an Amarok and he's getting 18 mpg 😳. If you have an endless wallet go for the Amarok as it is a bit more luxurious but I'm happy with my D'max.
1.9 ltr not great
2.5l better engine?
The new 1.9 is supposedly better than the 2.5 as I guess it's an all new engine and it has a new gearbox. There's a channel called Lord Muck and he did a review of this truck and he reckoned the new 1.9 is better than the 2.5 and although he never tried the 1.9 id imagine if the 1.9 is better than the 2.5 then it's definitely better than the old 1.9 engine.
Luckily here in Australia we still get the 3.0 4J option. It's not the most 'refined' thing around, but it's a very honest engine.
1.9 is well underpowered, the gearbox is schizophrenic and the rest of it is just as bad.. bag of sh😀t
Funded by Isuzu 😂😂😂
