Join Anna and Alf in this video as they visit PLAS MAWR in CONWY, SNOWDONIA, NORTH WALES, UK which is known to be BRITAINS FINEST TOWN HOUSE OF THE GOLDEN ELIZABETHAN AGE and has featured in TV's ' MOST HAUNTED ' as Anna tours the house and teaches why it is important for Welsh History and also teaches some Welsh language pronunciation.
Built by ROBERT WYNN ( son of John Wynn of Gwydir - A family who claimed descent from THE WELSH PRINCELY DYNASTIES OF OWAIN GWYNEDD and COLLWYN AP TANGNO ) between 1576 - 1585, and who married DOROTHY ( who came from a longer and better established pedigree than that of the WYNN's and counted EDNYFED FYCHAN among her ancestors )
He had entered the service of TUDOR DIPLOMATS and travelled to the most splendid ROYAL COURTS OF EUROPE before marrying Dorothy and together they made this house a celebration of his life, times and wealth and through the decor of the mansion wanted to show how proud they were of their connection to WELSH KINGS, PRINCES and the FOUNDER OF THE 5TH NOBLE TRIBE OF NORTH WALES.
The condition of the house deteriorated over the years, but CADW (the Welsh Government's historic environment service) bought the property in 1993 and extensively renovated it and redecorated it to resemble its 1665 condition with Renaissance gardens.

Hello, my dearest friends! Oh really, these are the places I love to visit! Castles or historic houses that contain a past that is still transmitted to us today! So interesting to see how people lived in those times and to know all the history related to this place! I like to find out more about the Elizabethan era. I am very interested in history, how could I not be Italian? I really enjoyed visiting this place with you, really kept in very good condition to be admired even today. I did wonder why there was so much plasterwork, but then I found out that this became popular in the 15 & 16th centuries, so it makes sense. Did I miss the severed heads? At least the nasty King of England did something right by establishing Conway. And we got to see down the ensuite, too. I'm sure that it was a lowly serf who had the great responsibility of getting rid of that. But to think, this was in the 1500s, and my grandad still had an outside toilet in the 1970s. Another great piece of Welsh history. Thank you for sharing.

It's fascinating to see how they built and designed these mansions over there. Many great, powerful people must have lived there. It's quite well-preserved. This was a huge Welsh history lesson .😻😻👍👍🙏

You are the only one who mentioned the high steps between each room, that's why I put my foot on one specifically to highlight it because it fascinated me and Haha yes that naughty English King got everywhere ! I loved the stories that my dad's friends would tell me chattering in Welsh to reach other about what they got up to walking and cycling in the mountains here and I would sit listening and laughing along with them. What a lovely historic home! It is in such great condition for a home from the 1500s. They did a great job restoring it. I love the ornate ceilings. It is pretty rude for Robert Wynn to build it then come back and haunt it. Thanks for sharing this place and its history with us! It is so great that you learned so much about North Wales at your father's feet and are now sharing that love of Wales and its culture and language with us!

What a gorgeous, well restored historic mansion. Awed by the history, stucco and impressive woodworks. The architecture, (particularly doors and windows) reminds me of medieval manor house - Igtham Mote in Kent. A big like 371👍🏻👍🏻 and best wishes from FLC Renaissance.

hi Anna & Alf - Watching now - wow that is beautiful history there. Well preserved building. They don't make them like that anymore. now it's chandeliers and golden staircases. Yes, indeed! Plas Mawr Conwy is the finest surviving Elizabethan townhouse in Britain. The house was built between 1576 and 1585 by the wealthy merchant Robert Wynn. Wynn’s initials can be found in almost every room, painted, carved, or decorated in colorful, ornate plasterwork to celebrate his own success and wealth. The simple footage on the gatehouse hides the wonders of the house behind, including an impressive suite of rooms with most of their original furniture and decoration as well as the construction of the 16th-century Parterre Garden. Wynn left complex instructions for the division of his estates upon his death in 1598. The years-long legal case that was pursued, dragged on until 1630, ensured the house was not redeveloped and remains in its original condition. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the house was a school, cheap accommodations, and finally the home of the Royal Cambrian Art Academy. Cawd acquired the property in 1993 and overtook a 42-month-long restoration project to save the building. It is often overlooked in favor of Cowny Castle but it is a far more interesting site.

I was enjoying the wonderfully unique plastered walls and then got a special surprise, your feet 😄. I always edit out all my mistakes when filming, or least try to but really should consider not always doing that, it can be quite funny. Another lovely history lesson and enjoyed you relating the stories of your youth with your father and friend.

Re the haunting, people say it is, people including staff over the years have heard and seen things ( if you are interested there are lots of things online about it ) and it's known by locals to be haunted but our family have never seen or felt anything in there. What a lovely place and wonderful tour. Thank you very much. We are so spoiled today. Can you image how many people today would not survive in an old mansion like that? Even though it was an indoor toilet, of sorts, it did not flush. I can imagine how rough it was to haul water in for drinking, etc. Trying to heat the entire dwelling with wood, especially how drafty those old building were, would be enough work to keep several people busy every day. I think that at least 90% of people today, if they were instantly transported to that time, could not survive, and would likely be dead before the first winter was over. They would not know how to hunt without a modern firearms, they wouldn't know which plants they could eat, or how to plant seeds without a garden tiller, and etc. Then there is the thought of having to fight to keep it as well. Times were very different back then, yes? I love watching movies based upon those times, but a movie is VERY different from the reality they faced. Well done, Anna.

These town houses!!! I mean what's there not to love! Such a great place and great view, i wouldn't mind owning one if them! I could imagine sitting by that huge window and the fire on a snowy Christmas morning :) I doubt even mind it is haunted! I can buy a present for the ghost too 😅☺️💚 Snowdonia is surely much more than just beautiful landscapes, these houses and the history is just as wonderful!
