Love dude … he’s humble … great at holding groove … he keeps it simple . He NEVER makes the video about himself and he tries to help other musicians get better !! God bless this young man !
Bootsys Basic Funk Formula led me here a few months ago. Billy is giving us some true 1970's style bassline funk. The bass 🎸 is the back bone and spine of the funk. Everything else rides off of that. Keep funkin on Billy. Houston... We no longer have a problem. We have a legend!!!
@@bodegaboys7475 Bootsy learned it while playing for James Brown, and then taught it to George Clinton. Love those animations by Mike Judge on the topic.
you've absolutely sold me on that bass, you should be getting sponsored for how many guitars you've indirectly sold. i hope it continues to treat you well!
Hey Allen, try putting that quarter note rest right before the ONE. Especially hard when the drummer does it also. But the small bit of silence before the one can make a tremendous difference. If the drummer makes a fill in that measure before the one, he should sometimes end his fill on that quarter note rest before coming down on the one. P-Funk was famous for this.
Omg, this is the best thing to help me funk I’ve seen, I’ve been learning techniques for months , but how to apply them to a beat ? I feel like you are making more sense for me than ANYTHING IVE HEARD ! God bless you, bass brother. You touch my heart.
I play metal mainly on bass but gosh i love funk bass it has so much feel like if I’m not playing thrash metal ill play some funk cuz keep it funky keep it thrash
Awesome video bully. I’ve been exposed to Gospel, Gospel quartet R&B the blues. I’ve not PLAYED for A long time. I started practicing over a year now and I’m in love with the funk genre. Thank you so much for your inspiration. Hope to develop the skill set for this genre And be Able to do it well. 🙏🏻
I’m closer that I thought 😮 I’m doing the scales and learning modes and arpeggios. I already have some finger patterns to apply to funk! SUPER EXCITED!!!
You are on the correct path. As long as you think of everything in terms of intervals, you have the formula for about every style you could want to play. My advice that helped me immensely. Do not think in terms of "scales". I just think of it as all derivatives of the Ionian and aeolian. I throw the augmented interval that corresponds to the mode or feeling I want. In fact I'm never thinking consciously about shapes at all anymore. Just intuitively reaching for the interval I want. Pretty much don't think of notes in terms of letters ever. Just numbers and derivatives of my 1 or whatever chord I'm on. Makes modal interplay incredibly intuitive.
I adore this! I just love the way you say "That's Cool" at 4:34. There's cool and there's cool, and man you are sub zero! Us British can't even hope to get close to your level of funk.
I've been playing guitar, mainly rock for 25 years and just bought a bass. Now I'm learning funk bass lines and enjoying it like I never thought I would. I've converted to a new religion.
Great video man, thanks, just getting into funk, everyone in my family is laughing at me because i have been practicing playing disco music but im doing it to improve my bass skills, i think it will help with funk too.👍.
Dayyyymn this is exactly what I DREAM of one day being able to do! Fantastic. I'm not a bass-player as in at all. Not a string instrument player. Am a pianist and flute player - I do synth and produce my own as a bedroom producer, but since I always do bass-driven music - just on my synth - I thought: I should begin bass. Have insanely weak hands and joints though because of recent arthritis and so on, - I also struggle on the piano with that. But - bass is more of a downward bent joint movement so hoping it can be possible. - Anyway - THANK YOU for a very inspiring video. Fab!
So now that I’m in like “Bass mode” I recently listened to James Brown “Papas gotta brand new bag” and man the bass in that song just flows and is just awesome, which doesn’t even really accurately describe it.
Funktastic tutorial! Showing it simple and then with flavor was really useful because at my current level of play it sound much more like the lighter version haha
Alan , fantastic lesson . U are one funky player. I’ll be studying this for awhile . Hopefully u will inspire the next generation and put funk back on top where it belongs. Just saw Larry Graham video. Kool is not the word for that man.
This effect is sick, sounds good dude. Michael Jackson, heck ya. If you're this funky in 5 minutes, there's something wrong with the audience. They have been infected by Funk
Fenders suck when they are off the shelf. Never ever in my life picked up a new fender that had good action. All of them are like 1 centimeter between the string and fret.
That's an Ibanez Talman you got here right? The headstock tells me it's not a 310,like mine, the body finish looks like a turquoise sparkle 310 though, did you put a different neck on a 310 or is it a different model? Wait I see the sparkly headstock now! I have the same bass, haha, great minds think alike👍
im a guitarist but damn are you right... the one is everything in rhythm. Also i bobbed my head like crazy to ur lines. a friend of mine is a bass player and i cant wait till he gets those groovy lines down haha
Nice bro! I see the bootsy influence. Watched his basic funk formula vid. Like your twist and elaboration. The ghost notes are cool man, im going to try that out. Never landed on the b7 before, thats a game changer. Precciate it bro

Houston, you have a problem ...it's me. I am here to be funky with you.
I'm a 47 year guy that just got funked up.
Love it!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😍
OOOH yeah!! That was another fantastic lesson! It's amazing how many teachers don't actually teach you this kind of simplicity to get you started.
Allen, as a fellow engineer and bass player you are a major inspiration. Thank you, very grateful for your lessons 🙏
Cool man thanks.
As an old school metal head, this was very impressive to hear and see.
That Ibanez looks so clean! The grooves and sounds were dope, too.
never heard someone play bass as smooth as this. I'm flabbergasted
Cool huh ?
like bootsy said, it’s all about the 1
ya know?
Like bootsy said, I like my coffee the same way I like my women, without another guys dick in it!
I think that was James Brown
@@bodegaboys7475 Bootsy learned it while playing for James Brown, and then taught it to George Clinton. Love those animations by Mike Judge on the topic.
Parliament literally wrote a song about it “Everything is on the one”

Thanks i wish that was the case... i would love that.

To the one.
The groove is the way.
Hey, I'm there now! How's the funk been treatin ya?
thats brilliant mate. Im just getting into bass after years of guitar playing. Guys like you playing this stuff are so inspirational.
In order to feel the funk, one must embrace it. Thank you for the lesson Bully.
Hell Yeah! About time a brother step up and do a tutorial video on funk. Thanks bro, really appreciate it man and you're funky as hell.
Great job! So simple! As with any true Master, you break it down and you don’t waste words!

Right and exact funk basics, it gives you the time to dance with the rhythm. Yeah the electric guitar is contagious to the groove.
LOL .. awesome. "Get to funkin'" ... or "Funk off!" Great vid Kid! Thanks man. Love your stuff.

Very nice video Maestro. Like George and the Funk Mob taught us years ago, " Everything is on the 1️⃣" 🤘🏾
That actually came from James brown who passed it to Bootsy who passed it to George
That Green looks dope!! Keep funk alive bro!!
you are an excellent teacher KING
Funk always works with major scales, lots of octaves and FLAVOR as you said, It's true. Awesome highs and clean sound, man! Very bright!
hmmm... major and minor scales have exactly the same number of octaves, if I may add.
I adore this! I just love the way you say "That's Cool" at 4:34. There's cool and there's cool, and man you are sub zero! Us British can't even hope to get close to your level of funk.

Like Bootsy says, “It’s all about the one”.
I like that other thing Bootsy said: "Funk is what the bass player do between chord changes"
Funk is my life!!! Thanks for the lesson.

Always cool videos and getting some Funk
Sounds crazy man! Could you tell us a bit more about your gear ? Thanks
Funk songs are fun to play cause you can stop , start , through in a scale
Thank you my friend!
Very chewy sound.
Nice work bro!
Loving that Talman bass! That green is just right. Thanks to Ibanez for producing quality basses at affordable prices. Fender snobs can kiss my ass.
Fenders suck when they are off the shelf. Never ever in my life picked up a new fender that had good action. All of them are like 1 centimeter between the string and fret.
Which model Talman is that?
That bass is so clean
Your bass tone is killer.
Damn your GOOD... your like the slash of the bass world...
slash is a not-that-good-tbh guitarrist..
As Theo Huxtable said in that Cosby Show episode with Stevie Wonder; jammin’ on the one. Awesome job, sir.
