I agree! there’s no way you have to braid this tight. There’s no way you don’t know your knuckles are literally in the scalp of the person. Some maybe heavy hand and you must inform them and if they do not stop and correct then they are not good to go to. Some also know they are literally being heavy on your hair and do not care! I braided my own hair for the first time in 1990. My hair grew like wildfire then I switched to twists when I no longer needed the length of extensions. 14 years ago I let those twists turn into locs. No tightness, no chemicals, no scraping my hairline off to make swoops. I have literally saved myself THOUSANDS in cash and thousands in scalp health and pain.

I'm a very blonde German woman, so I have no experience with these African braids, but somehow my parents also managed to give me traction alopecia by making me wear extremely tight high ponytails to school every day. I still have some patches of hair above my temples that are very thin. Kids don't know any better so the parents should educate themselves on this.
This is why I learned how to attach braiding hair and do my own braids. I take my time and do them over 2/3 days. It’s a relaxing experience for me to take care of my hair and show it love. It’s shown in the length and health of my hair. I treat the braiding hair before putting it in by soaking it in ACV and water, then add my homemade hair butter to it so it doesn’t dry my hair out. I’ve grown my hair out to almost my waist by just taking my time and doing braids every other style. I let my hair breathe for about a month between braid installations and that’s it. This is just plain wickedness and them being inconsiderate at this point cause IT IS NOT NORMAL TO POUR HOT WATER STRAIGHT ON THE SCALP.
This! I am not a black woman but I have had a burn with boiling water in a part of my body. It hurts and it took months to heal. Sometimes it still hurts! Why are you doing this to yourselves ladies??? Stop! You are beautiful do not let some stupid braider burn your head
I cannot! I am sooooo tender headed as they say. Im 41yrs old, and I've had mico braids once, cornrows twice, and crochet braids/locs twice. Looks amazing....cant take it.
Hairstyles are never supposed to hurt like that. Pain is your follicles’ way of warning you that they’re about to start releasing some hair because they think you’re in distress. SMH this is why a lot of black women can’t retain length, edges or hair density, because they do all these super tight styles. You don’t need braids. And if you get them and they’re painful, take them out immediately, do not try to fight through the pain or you’re gonna lose hair or get a scalp infection. Watching those women try to do all those hacks to get past the pain looked insane. lol you have to start listening to your body. Pain happens for a reason. Listen to it
This is something I'm thinking about now, because as someone with a very tender scalp, pain is not a good guide to whether I'm doing something harmful. I can get a terrible headache just from tying a ponytail a bit too high up - not tight, just high up near the crown, because it changes the way the hair is lying. If I got the best braids in the world, the process would still hurt and I would still have pain for a few days after. I can guarantee it. So how is someone like me to know it's too tight? It's a problem. I can see that some of these braids are so bad they're making the scalp skin pucker and wrinkle up, that's easy to spot, but I feel like there's a big grey area where braids are too tight to be healthy but not so tight as to be visibly bad.
@ pain is definitely a good guide, there’s a reason why your scalp is tender, just because someone has a lower pain tolerance doesn’t mean the hair style isn’t potentially damaging. Hair is really just meant to sit on your head. Everything else is unnecessary stress on your follicles
From my experience is because the stylus will have an attitude or gaslight you about it calling you tender headed and complaining about how difficult or how short your hair is and stuff§.. I mean I’m sharing from my years of experience in sales a child to an adult is usually too intimidated to speak up your attitude wasn’t that great if that makes sense that’s why am over these black stylus I’ll go to anybody who knows what they’re doing regardless of color skin whether it’s black owned or not I really don’t care because I’m not about to be disrespected at a place because it’s black owned or because they’re the same race as me I just want somebody that knows what they’re doing and that I mostly do my hair myself and I’m constantly on TH-cam trying to learn because I don’t want anybody complaining about my hair or messing it up and mistreating it..
I use to complain about them doing my hair to tight as a child but I was called tender headed and made fun of. My mother told me not to embarrass her. It starts from childhood.
I remember being braided by 2 african women and some of the hairdressers were even laughing when i was wincing in pain . They do it on purpose and its quite disturbing
They actually don't do it on purpose they laugh because to them the fact you think that hurts when it's some they grew up doing to each other isn't that bad african braiders are just known for a tight grip doesn't mean they was out to get you Chile
@@shania991I literally told my braider I suffered a concussion please don’t braid tightly. She did it anyway.. my head was hurting terribly. I took the braids out and will not go back again…i usually do my own braids but I sprained my arm…I would rather have a nappy peasy head than let a braider braid my hair. I’m going to save a ton of money..
Once I went to get a weave and the stylist braided so tight. I felt light headed when I left. While driving , I felt blood rushing to my head. When I finally got home I went to the shower and vomited I had to cut it out immediately and then I felt relief. I think if I did not take it out, I would not have woken up the next day
Its amazing so many people don't have a problem calling out bad service when its their waiter or delivery person. But when it comes to the hair dresser, when the sevice really matters, everyones afraid to offend
I have gotten chemical burns from a hair relaxer, and my hair has had bruises from tight braids. This is my third year with no braids, and I am loving it.
Some braiding shops do not care for the health of the client's hair. They will braid tightly and dip your natural hair in hot water. That hot water damages the hair. One time, the stylist was putting a flame to the entire length of the braid, which was burning my natural hair, damaging it. We have to tell these stylists, "No."
This is why my gran and mum always told me 'You don't let any and everyone play in your head. People are jealous and will put blight on your hair.' These people do it on purpose sometimes, I knew a girl years ago from my school who had amazing hair that she was growing out after a big chop, she went to get her hair done and the woman mashed it up over time. Her hair was never the same after that, it was weak and kept breaking, her scalp was bad as well. Idk what the woman did but it was dry and cracked and irritated etc. She had to chop it again and really baby it after that. It still had patches where hair just never grew in properly and there was actual scarring. She just thought the tightness was normal and that it wouldn't cause any harm and the woman did some nice styles so she kept going. There's doing it securely and then there's this bs.
Tbh, a lot of these are AFRICAN hair braiders. I only go to American black hair braiders because they usually understand the assignment initially and are willing to take the feedback if you say it’s too tight. African hair braiders already seem irritated when I walk through the door, pull on my hair, cut the loose hair that’s hanging out, talk stuff, up charge etc.
Exactly I only trust Black Americans to braid my hair I havent been to an African braiding shop since I was a child because they braided my hair so tight that I cried and they just kept going and didn't care that they were making me uncomfortable it's safe to say I got those braids taken out right away cause my scalp was red from how tight they braided my hair and i was never brought back to the shop again after that.
Same. I only trust my fellow haitians. Too Much horrot stories from african braiders. They don't care? Or only care about making the money and not pleasing the clients?
I was shocked at someone pouring boiling water on someone’s head ! I can’t imagine how much pain there has to be to a woman to cut her hair for relief 🥲
I’m teacher and I had to let a mom know her daughters braids were causing an infection. It was inflamed and white bumps all throughout. She came back a month later with braids with glitter in it. Not as tight but it was heavy braids. Fast forward. The bottom of her scalp hair broke off and the mom kept her natural. She was 3.
I’ve had to oil my scalp for a week after some fresh braids. I was so scared for my edges but that helped and hot steamed showers help to loosen. All else fails, pop a couple pain killers
People dampen/wet them thinking it will soothe maybe in the short term but in the long run not at all!! Hair tightens as it drys so the pain going to get worse 🥺 it's so sad, I've heard people say well it's done right because it's tight and in pain!! Nope it's done wrong if it hurts!!
@JodiTheIslandGirl i know right!! I had a full head sew in when I was around 15 and it was so tight I bled 🩸 I literally got a Stanley blade to cut it out!! 😭😭 Spend wayyy over £500 (at the time) went back the next day devastated!! Lucky I was good friends with her so I told her off and she never braided tight again!! But that poor child 😭😭
It’s better to oil the scalp instead of the towel hack and skip the bonet if it’s too tight. The braids won’t mess up especially if you’re barely laying on your head from the pain. Speaking of laying , I’ve slept with airplane pillows to keep from laying directly on my head
@@blackluxury5585 airplane pillow! That's genius I would never of thought of that!! 😱🤔 When I was younger I used to love a good oil and a covering/towel/bonnet but now I can't stand the feeling of any of it anything rubbing on my ears or feeling constricted over night I've had recommendations but can't find anything I can handle also my hair definitely won't forgive me for it!!
At 26 I had male pattern baldness and I didnt know much about my 4c hair so I thought the only way to grow hair was locs. I go to the salon and they look at my hair and tell me to shave it all off and come back another time. I paused...then I did it. Shaved it all off. It is now almost a decade later and I didn't relax my hair and braid once a year. I'm so relieved and have long, thick afro texture hair. Never going back.
Pro tip-if the first two braids are tight, this is how it will be! As more braids are added, there is less scalp space to ensure the braids can move on your scalp, so with each braid there’s less scalp, less scalp, etc! Don’t let anybody tell you that shit is going to loosen, etc, because HOW? They’re no scalp surface to loosen! The hairs are creating tension, so that’s not happening until you take them down.🤷🏾♀️😬😬😬🤦🏾♀️
I learned how to do my own to save money, I couldn’t believe the prices I’d seen some folks paying. I’m new to wearing braids, a couple months ago was the first time I had it done. It was actually a young girl from the neighborhood that hooked me up (she only wanted $100 but I gave her $150). She’s eleven years old and did the damn thing, no pain at all. I thought the braids were a protective style but this is effing scary!
Sometimes it doesn't feel feel painful when they are pelting immediately but baby the minute they done you feel it. Im edges are so thin because of that
Lord my head was itching watching this video. I haven't been to a braider in so long. I remember my sister braided m hair and I took the stuff straight out because I couldn't see myself being in that kind of pain all day. I learned to marley twist and did my own hair every two weeks until I got the length I was comfortable with. Now I am working on my thickness so I can do chunky twists on myself. please ladies say no to the african braiders that have your scalp folding up and bleeding
This is exactly why I dont let just anyone braid my hair. I always ask someone who has gone to them multiple times and my first question is ALWAYS "Do they braid tight?" Cuz nah. My hair is already kinda thin. Not pulling mine out
I have almost butt crack length natural hair....I went to get my hair braided, the lady says it will be an extra $85 for the length of my hair....6 braids no hair added was $150 + $85....i walked out.
@@LoveK1 yah....but you can also feel them pulling your hair to say hay.....don't pull it too tite. Not to mention....you can see it when you look in the mirror before you leave that its too tite. If we can see it .....they can see it.
Usually when you go to the dentist, the dentist, the professional, will encourage you to speak up if something hurts. Getting your hair done puts you in a vulnerable position so kinda wild that you would blame the customer instead of the professional.
You don't always feel the pain when you're getting your hair done. Also if you are supposed to be a stylist you should know enough about hair to know not to put that much tension on someone's hair.
I catch myself wanting my daughters hair be smoothly done, her hair is thick, so i always braid only her natural hair, but i've seen two little bald spots, it really opened my eyes, thats shes a kid, and i dont want this for my girl. We live in a world now that everything needs to be slick haired. I do reflect on what i can do better for her. We need the kids to let her hair getting messy sometimes, im a 90's kid, soo yeahh you know the old pictures and see ur hair. 😅 iknow. This video was a second eye opener.
Love the way you get very detailed information. I never knew that the little bumps I get after my extension reinstall were from tension. Thank you so much for the information next week when I get it redone I'll tell her not to do it as tight❤
Ive been in customer service the majority of the last 20 yrs...i know nothing about hair dressing and as a white woman, less about black hair. That said i am tempted to go back to school to learn how to do black hair just so these poor ladies get some decent service. 😢 Some of these videos are heartbreaking!
I LOVE and enjoy your videos! I’m new to the fam and wanted to make it known ❤️🌴🌴🌴 Also these tight braids are ATROCIOUS and I try my best not to be a tight braider myself but I can tell the difference when you braid tight on purpose to keep them from “frizzing” or braiding tight to grip the hair without intentionally hurting your client. The long term affects are damaging 😢
This reason alone is why I don't agree with people with straighter textures having braids and especially trying to wear them for the same length of time as a WOC.But also, why I stopped learning how to braid.
The fact they are doing this to the babies is crazy. I cannot imagine a child having to go through all that pain for a hairstyle. Nothing is that good looking enough to make a child hurt for it. plus the damage they talked about is scary and sad. Mommas protect those babies.
For you to sit there and let them braid your scalp is crazy you have to tell your brainer they are too tight release some of the tension. Anyways to me a good braider knows tension control off top
OMG I am shaking seeing these vids! So not worth it!! The redness and pain is wild!!! Took my box braids out last weekend that was done by a professional and there was so much relief. Just had a couple of braids in the front that felt tight still depending on how I twisted the braid. But I think I'm going to attempt to do my own braids in the future.
People braid tight because they think it makes the hair look neater. I had one client tell me i am not braiding tight enough, but when i was finished with her hair she couldn't believe how neat it was.
I have two girls one is autistic so it's she doesn't like her head to be touched but I do grease her hair when she is sleep but she still wakes up swinging lol and my other one she is tender headed as well she always want to put edges on her hair an I said no cuz it's a lot of babies edges that fell out it's not cute to me her edges are cute hair is very healthy an is down her back!!! One thing about me is I don't follow trends they are self destructive trying to fit in just be happy
🌴 10:57 Just wanted to say that African hair (type 3 and 4) are the more fragile type of hair. Asian hair are the strongest, then comes caucasian/ western type hair. But our hair is the most fragile type, there's a lot of misconception. People with western type hair are not used to tention like that, so their reactions are understandable.
Made me sad when the girl with blue braids was screaming in pain. I’m native but have a very blended family, lots of racial diversity. Just trying to learn more about what my family members have to go through for their hair. This was hard to watch.
I hate that these mothers today but that toxic braiding hair in their kids hair…when you are young that's when your hair should be the healthiest and extension ns are not needed.

When I finally got home I went to the shower and vomited I had to cut it out immediately and then I felt relief. I think if I did not take it out, I would not have woken up the next day
Omg that’s so scary they must have known that they braided your hair too tight!
That is really scary. I’m glad you didn’t pass out whilst driving. Glad your ok.
The lady with the blue braids 😢... Worse the lady grabbing her hair is smiling 😢. Nooo that's not okay. I felt her pain
Remember wen ppl was making fun of blue ivy hair wen she was a baby. Now look at her hair.
As a Caucasian woman I have never head tight braids, however I have had scalp burning from bleach. Scalp pain is no joke!
So you never had box braids?
We have different types of hair from you! 🤦🏽♀️ But I digress
@SaggieDivine333 Uh, yeah, no joke. Is what I said any less true?
Why does adding that you're Caucasian matter? Just wondering
That's why I taught myself to braid. I did my own, my sisters, my friends, nieces and now my daughter's.
Jodi😍😍you are looking so gorgeous !!
Stawwwpppp 🥰🥰🥰…thank you so much 😊
You look gorgeous! Can’t wait to watch the video ❤
Aw, thank you fam!! Enjoy 😉
She was 3.
That poor baby 😢
the hair is hairing jodi! you look so cute 😭
Thanksssss🥰🥰🥰
She has a glow
I’ve had to oil my scalp for a week after some fresh braids. I was so scared for my edges but that helped and hot steamed showers help to loosen. All else fails, pop a couple pain killers
They are so beautiful but I just don't understand😢😢😢💔💔💔
How could you inflict this on kids?…at least adults have a choice, awful!
It pains my heart 💔
I haven't had my hair braided since June because when I took my braids down my edges came out with them.
Omg 😮….try using Vitamin E oil on your edges 😊
People dampen/wet them thinking it will soothe maybe in the short term but in the long run not at all!! Hair tightens as it drys so the pain going to get worse 🥺 it's so sad, I've heard people say well it's done right because it's tight and in pain!! Nope it's done wrong if it hurts!!
Can you imagine when they lay down to sleep?! 😭😭😭
Braid sheen spray helps soothe the pain of tight braids and helps with your new growth. I always use it and it works
I remember these days so happy with my decision to dread my hair 😁
Jodi, That hairstyle is PERFECT for you! You’re so gorgeous! 🔥💛
I highly recommend headband wigs and drawstrings ponytails. You can get them with braids, faux locs, twist, and more. Definitely helps me!
The hairs are creating tension, so that’s not happening until you take them down.🤷🏾♀️😬😬😬🤦🏾♀️
Even if braids aren't extremely tight it's a fact the braids will definitely loosen over time.
When she said braid so tight that braid in your thoughts...I felt that!
Omg I can't, I need my little bit of hair
I’m with you on this 😅
🌴🌴🌴 to you sis!!! Love the channel!
Those poor babies! My heart sunk when I saw them.
It reminded me of when my mom braided my hair too tight!! Brings back horrible memories😭😭
Oh wow 😢
Sometimes it doesn't feel feel painful when they are pelting immediately but baby the minute they done you feel it. Im edges are so thin because of that
I'll say it again, I've been with my Senegalese braider for 8 years. Glory to Gawd, I still have my edges and bra strap length!! 😊
Awesome 👏🏾
How could she continue pouring boiling water after she poured it on the client's scalp. Why would you continue to sit there and get burnt.
Not pulling mine out
OMG Jodi im loving your hair. My favorite so far. That look is flawless girl..😊
I have almost butt crack length natural hair....I went to get my hair braided, the lady says it will be an extra $85 for the length of my hair....6 braids no hair added was $150 + $85....i walked out.
😳😳😳
That is DISGUISING!
What you mean butt crack length
Love the content Jodi! 🌴 and your hair is gorgeous
Amazing how not one of them considers just taking the braids out. Just LET IT GOOOOOO! Damn!
Right?! Even the girl who tried to razor cut her edges 😢
I'm a white lady and got a braid in Jamaica. I got a horrible headache from it.
I’m a simple person, I hear a pretty JA accent and I follow instantly 🌴 also love this type of content 😂
beauty is pain or whatever but this is too much. i hate seeing these little ones in so much pain. 😢
I don't blame the stylist.....I blame the client who sit and have this done to them willingly.
Skin breaks down with moderate pressure or pulling over time. It can take a while for it to hurt.
Sometimes the pain doesn’t really set in till it’s all done and you’ve left the shop. Then all those nerve wake up and your head throbs.
Hey Jodi! You look gorgeous girl! ❤
Ive been in customer service the majority of the last 20 yrs...i know nothing about hair dressing and as a white woman, less about black hair. That said i am tempted to go back to school to learn how to do black hair just so these poor ladies get some decent service. 😢
Some of these videos are heartbreaking!
People think "oh it's just steam" but forget that steam is even HOTTER than boiling water
Jodi! Love your videos ❤
I LOVE and enjoy your videos! I’m new to the fam and wanted to make it known ❤️🌴🌴🌴
Also these tight braids are ATROCIOUS and I try my best not to be a tight braider myself but I can tell the difference when you braid tight on purpose to keep them from “frizzing” or braiding tight to grip the hair without intentionally hurting your client. The long term affects are damaging 😢
This reason alone is why I don't agree with people with straighter textures having braids and especially trying to wear them for the same length of time as a WOC.But also, why I stopped learning how to braid.
I love your channel!!
You always look beautiful but this hair style is especially beautiful on you. Blessings during this holiday season. ~ karen
Thank you so much Karen! Many happy returns to you and yours 🎉🎉
Love your content ❤🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴
Thank you!! ❤ Welcome to the Islanders Family 🎉🎉🎉
Love the hair hon! ❤
The fact they are doing this to the babies is crazy. I cannot imagine a child having to go through all that pain for a hairstyle. Nothing is that good looking enough to make a child hurt for it. plus the damage they talked about is scary and sad. Mommas protect those babies.
🌴 🌴 🌴 love your videos mama!!!!
About that baby that just so cruel who in this planet go to do it something like this oh my goodness😮
Why do kids need extensions to
Love your accent ❤
At this point they're damaging your hair on purpose.
For you to sit there and let them braid your scalp is crazy you have to tell your brainer they are too tight release some of the tension. Anyways to me a good braider knows tension control off top
As someone who easily gets hair headaches, this is very hard to watch. Ouch!!
I know someone that charges $600 but she has clients coming from other states for her work.
Jodi my favorite island gurl has never looked so beautiful😍🥰😍🥰😍
This is why I started braiding my own hair
I swear this is done on purpose 😩
If it is…it’s so sad 😢
Common sense y'all - Tight braids and all this glue will take your hair out WTF
Love the accent
🌴
10:57 Just wanted to say that African hair (type 3 and 4) are the more fragile type of hair. Asian hair are the strongest, then comes caucasian/ western type hair. But our hair is the most fragile type, there's a lot of misconception. People with western type hair are not used to tention like that, so their reactions are understandable.
Nice! Thanks for dropping this gem and big ups to you for joining the Islanders Family 🎉🎉🎉
@@JodiTheIslandGirl 🥰🌴
Why would someone sit there and let their hair be braided so tightly? The first braid would have gotten me out of the chair and out the door.
Done with black Hairdressers, decades ago, my hair is now doing very well..
I think they do it on purpose. This happened to me, I removed them right away and never went back there again.
Oh man I can’t even imagine the pain!!!!
Beauty is pain (to some degree!) but please don’t do this to yourself
My hair has been waist length and is super healthy. I don’t do anything special other than no weaves, wigs or braids
I've been subscribed for a bit now but haven't dropped my 🌴🌴🌴🌴😁 Love the content!
Awww! Thank you so much 😊…Welcome to the Islanders Family 🎉🎉
Big up yuhself Jodi 🫶🏽
First thing I tell anyone that put their hands 🙌 in my hair i let them know from the jump im tender headed n don’t pull hair or im out
Made me sad when the girl with blue braids was screaming in pain. I’m native but have a very blended family, lots of racial diversity. Just trying to learn more about what my family members have to go through for their hair. This was hard to watch.
They are supposed to be PROTECTIVE styles. Stop letting people rip your hair out.
I hate that these mothers today but that toxic braiding hair in their kids hair…when you are young that's when your hair should be the healthiest and extension ns are not needed.
