We had a Land Rover- sold it because it was always in the shop Broken that- leaking this- electronics not working right- Bad sensors- got rid of it right after the warranty expired Have had a G class Mercedes since Only 1 issue - 1 bad spark plug Otherwise just oil changes and brake pads and usual service Now 10 years old-347,108 miles runs great to this day We take it off-road monthly in the desert of CA- no freeway baby miles- No driveway Queen- She was up to her steps in mud two weeks ago and did great! Sold On Benz!
legend has it, that the rest of the off roaders are sitting around the fire at night and tell stories of the legendary adventures of the G-class and the Defender, jealous that they can't even come close
@@drueskillz439 Jeep is good on mud because of the light weight, as is the Jimny. Defender is in a class of its own because of chassis, axles and brutal torque curve of diesel engines..
I live in Jamaica and have a 94 Discovery 1, 200tdi, which I love. I don't play games with it like these guys, though. It's a work vehicle, not a toy. Can't afford to destroy it by being foolish.
Adam Chabni. Basically those tires seemed over pressurized they need minimal air pressure than their normal pressure. In doing so It'd improve wider tire footprint for better grip and will also reduce vehicles bouncing uncontrollably. BTW Nice video. "Land Rover!"
i would have to say the defender is the best simply because of the alluminium body and it being simple and cheap to fix compaired to the merc, although both are great 4x4's
The Landy has raised suspension which as you can see, is a major hindrence to it climbing. Also has bead lockers to stop tyres being torn off..but neither modification helps with the climbing.
The Defender sounds amazing, what are you running? Also I know the Merc has factory axle lockers, have you fitted diff locks to the Landy or did it get up on open diffs?
While the low-end gearing is there on both of these two SUV's, it all boils down to tires, tires, and tires (type of tires and the right pressure for them in tackling such)
@watannen the Def. is bouncy cos it has HUGE lift competition springs on it and a tilt axel set up. alsonote how much easier it got up the hill in the first place. It may not have the most powerful engine, but landrover have done such an amazing job at transfering the power to the wheels, with the low range gearbox engaged it has no trouble gettin up there x
@watannen What you need to look at is the torque curve, Landies tend to have better low down torque but it drops off at higher revs, so if you spin a wheel it loses torque. The G has a higher torque peak, so when it starts spinning it gets worse. In this case the Defender got over in less tries, but I don't claim that's a definitive test. But then there's the cost, a Defender can be had in most cases for the cost of servicing the G (slight exaggeration), well maybe servicing and tires.
not just the tires, the lifted clearance raises center of gravity, so i believe a non modified vehicle of the same types could have made it easier, with only proper "not over sized" tires
if you want a modified mercedes g: the swiss armed forced will sell all of them (about 20'000 i think). very good stuff, i was driving one as i was in the army.
In the Late 1970's when Persia (Iran) was ruled by the Shah he was the main share holder in Mercedes Benz, as there was a revolution in the making the shah wanted a reliable and versatile vehicle that was not only reliable and comfortable but one that could be easily adapted for military use and all the variations needed. Then in 1978 the G wagen was in production built by hand in Austria. You either love them or hate them ! Most people who have 4x4's don't even go off road so shouldn't comme
@ZionW0lf That's one of the things that i was saying. The G has a more powerful engine and i think the driver stepped on it a bit too hard and that is why it lost traction and spun its wheels instead of getting up the first time just as the Defender did.
the G had better tires but shorter wheel base.the defender had sucky tires but had a little longer wheel base.the defender won because of that, great truck
Both trucks make it to the top of the obstacle, but the Land Rover does it with less fuss, and on the second attempt. Also the Land Rover looks like it has raised suspension, which will not help on a hill like this, as it raises the centre of gravity.
@Gris110 Based on this video, where do yo see the defender is better? Disregarding the fact that the defender is heavily modded too, maybe it's just the driver? No doubt that both cars are great offroaders, but price is no argument when you're out there
@ZoracYTManager Engine size/power isn't entirely immaterial, esp on hills. "Power hill" isn't just an American concept. More torque would allow the use of a higher gear (low 2nd/3rd) which would help suppress wheelspin on the ascent. A 500cc engine would have to be geared so low that there'd be "zilch" energy/momentum & traction would be lost pretty much @ the base
@watannen yeh, the gearing is reallyhigh ratio aswell. But the fact stands that the landy obviously dosent need a more powerful engine cos its designed in this way. its much more efficient annd at least 4 times cheaper lol (as many have already said, u could buy 4 brand new def 90's for the same price as 1 G x
Judging by your videos, you're actually not as far away as you could be. Not that far at all relatively speaking, but right now I'm trying to start a career. I've got street tires on my truck right now, being unemployed I can't afford gas getting that far north much less a repair if my rover decided to break. I've got a pipe dream of sticking a Defender body on that disco frame one day, maybe then. :P
although a landrover owner and fan, love the merc g wagon too. the defender dont sound like its got a tdi or td5 in it though. stunning scenery though.
I finished the video and though, great, finally a video that not showing bias for or against something. Just 2 guys in 2 different off-roaders, having fun. Then I read the comments, and alot of people must have been watching a different video than me. They both won, because they both made it.
NL land army: Mercedes, our Royal Navy: Land Rover 110 XD's: experience in the sandy dunes: marines in LR 110's: no problem running around (standard), Mercedes (loaded also) stuck mostly; after at least 2 wheel/ tire combinations + diff locks could do the same. Weight distribution is key: LR front axle remains about same load while vehicle is fully loaded; Mercedes LWBase: rear axle pos effectively increases front ax load: earlier stuck.
Richard Leaver I hate to disappoint you but I have personally experienced a climb in a Range Rover Sport that was just as difficult. Put a good set of off-road tires on a Range Rover and it will go anywhere either of these two can go. The only people that deny that fact are people that don't know Land Rover very well. I have been off-roading with both and can tell you the stock Range Rover is probably actually more capable when compared to a stock Defender mainly due to it's superior traction control system.
Don't worry, wasn't knocking a Rangy Swampfox, If you look at my channel you'll see the wife has a Freelander 2 HSE, superb machine !, what I meant was, I'd just like to see an 80k Rangy turn up at that moment and take the piss out of every thing else trying to climb that, we both know you could put two of it's wheels on ice on that slope and it would probably still pick it's way up. We went on the Land Rover day out near Skipton, North Yorks when we got the Freelander, they put me on a slope with both it's passenger side wheels on rollers then they said set off again, after a second or two it figured there was something a miss down one side and put all it's power to the drivers side wheels and simply climbed the rest of the hill, stock Landy with stock tyres
We had a Land Rover- sold it because it was always in the shop

I seriously did not think that anything could have made it up that slope. Unbelievable. Lockers for the win.
legend has it, that the rest of the off roaders are sitting around the fire at night and tell stories of the legendary adventures of the G-class and the Defender, jealous that they can't even come close
not even in a million years to come
Ahahah no way!
Lmfao.... Yeah right
Jeep will kick its ass all day.

That was a tough test! I didn't think either would make it.
it's about the driver skills not the car! both are awesome legendary cars
+Adam Chabni but defender is better...
Adam Chabni what drive skill?to go just with acceleration?
Adam Chabni yes it's all about, driver skills, car preformens and tires
Adam Chabni. Basically those tires seemed over pressurized they need minimal air pressure than their normal pressure. In doing so It'd improve wider tire footprint for better grip and will also reduce vehicles bouncing uncontrollably. BTW Nice video. "Land Rover!"
Yaaa but to some extent car too
Would love that old school Mercedes G Wagon, looks really good and packs lots of power for offroad trips
i would have to say the defender is the best simply because of the alluminium body and it being simple and cheap to fix compaired to the merc, although both are great 4x4's
Great driving guys.nice location too btw ;)
Defenders just defy gravity!
The Landy has raised suspension which as you can see, is a major hindrence to it climbing. Also has bead lockers to stop tyres being torn off..but neither modification helps with the climbing.
Both great 4x4's
Defender is a third the price of a G-Wagon though which makes it a bargain, in relative terms.
I own an AMG. Agree with your statement. That said, the same came be said for the US Jeep Wrangler
The SUZUKI JIMNY at a third of the cost of the cheaper of these two vehicles, would put them both to shame!th-cam.com/video/GE2W93FBdo8/w-d-xo.html
The old Landrover costs 50K less with at least 300 less HP and still got up with less fuss
My thoughts!
@Leonidis78 its not its been painted like that
@Leonidis78 i know that i have 4 personal cars nvm the ones my dad has for the business
@Nicolás Löwy defenders dont break, range rovers do.
BELLA GRIS E SULTANO! me lo ricordo bene quel passaggio! Mitici!

Nice, i would love to Take my series 3 Landy there.
awesome driving skills
that's hardcore gnarly no doubt about it. great drivin' boys!!!
Wonderful work, gentlemen!! :)
Great video 🚗
''Se non vai su, la taglio! Non preoccuparti!'' Hahahaha! Grande!
they are two good tough guys, one in an "expensive suit and tie" and the other in "Street Clothes" to do the same job.
While the low-end gearing is there on both of these two SUV's, it all boils down to tires, tires, and tires (type of tires and the right pressure for them in tackling such)
It boils down to ground clearance, diff locks and the skill of the driver. And tyres.
@Schwanzus Longus The G isn't better in all of these, it is a match at best.
Didn't attempt THAT one, but I have been round the course set out at the 4x4 show, in 1999/2000, driving..., a Nissan Terrano.
@watannen the Def. is bouncy cos it has HUGE lift competition springs on it and a tilt axel set up.

Steep and a nasty hump, Good driving!
I own both the Mercedes is much more comfortable but the defender has a coolness factor

Yeah, all g wagens come with a suspension lift and 33 inch tires. I think I saw that one at the mall yesterday. I'd happily take either of them.
not just the tires, the lifted clearance raises center of gravity, so i believe a non modified vehicle of the same types could have made it easier, with only proper "not over sized" tires
nice rides...that obstacle is no doubt beyond the capabilities of my D2 or my willingness to force it ;)
Impressionante complimenti
Landy my favourate car!
I enjoyed that, wow that was steep!
one of the best 4:20 videos!

The ancient art of deflation works wonders.
where is this place?can any body tell me please ?
As ever, the difference is primarily in the driver and modifications made to the vehicles.
The Gwagen is a very heavy vessel...
Crazy guys...this is real offroad.
Where is this?
although a landrover owner and fan, love the merc g wagon too. the defender dont sound like its got a tdi or td5 in it though. stunning scenery though.
Sounds like a td5 to me alright

it's also depend on the driver.
Driver skills and tires. Same tires and same pilot. Than u have the power of the car
cool

Silvi Vlachkov yeah right fuck g wagon fuck boy.
Silvi Vlachkov in this case the g wagons driver was shit scared
Early 90s defender rocks. Have nothing against it. I'd take it too as a buggy. I'm talking about new age LRs only.
@watannen yes, compare a G with 3in lift against a 110 with 8 inch lift... :facepalm:
The lift on that G is perfect.

Anyone know how many degrees would that incline be ?
@watannen G are good but not a good value you could have a spare defender plus lots of mods like winches, lifts and tires for the price of a stock G
I love everything about the G Wagon except the price.
Italians? Filmed in Italy too? Beautiful landscape.

it doesnt actually make any difference. It actually has two diff locks and a transfer box locking device.
Where is this place, it is absolutely beautiful. Awesome trucks too.
Val d'Isère is in the French Alps (not far from Italy, where these drivers seem to come from. :-)
Apart from the vehicles..great driving skill..cheers.
Defender for life - the G63 6x6 is cool, but I could never own one, and it isn't as tough as a defender

not without a good set of tyres
