- VegeGa garden beds and Vego garden beds look exactly the same at first glance, but there are some key differences to look at when deciding which brand is right for you.

Welcome to Auxhart Gardening! I’m Rachel, a small-scale southern gardener growing near Clemson, SC, zone 7b. I mainly garden in-ground, with containers as secondary production spaces.
Knowing where your food comes from is powerful, and empowering, and I believe we can change the world through gardening education.
The agricultural system is broken; we’ve monocultured nearly every major crop, forcing the use of chemical pesticides and inorganic fertilizers to maintain large-scale food production. I believe there’s a better way.
By teaching people to rely on themselves, even just a little, for their food supply, we might be able to create some breathing room for our strained food system, allowing for change to start happening.
By educating people about where food comes from and how to grow it, we can raise awareness about our broken agricultural system and form a community that understands how to fix it.
By forming a community, we can move toward creating real change in the world.
My goal is to educate; yes you can grow food, yes you can do it without chemicals, yes you can do it in your backyard or on your windowsill. And yes, that can make a difference in the world.
It's a beautiful sweater! I love crochet but haven't been brave enough to try a sweater yet. Thanks for walking me through the beds and their differences.
A completely honest review. 👍👍Thank you for introducing our metal raised garden beds. 🌱🌿💚💚
Glad to hear that y'all enjoy crocheting. That's a pretty sweater and a good color for you!
Hey Rachel , thank you for the garden bed reviews. I wasn't familar with those two particular companies and their products. The quality of the beds seems to be pretty good. Again, we appreciate you 🌞
If you want to extend the life of metal tanks (horse troughs) get a zinc annode and wire it to the tank. You can get annodes at most boating stores or hardware stores (water heater parts). The annode corrodes faster than the steel. After a few years checkbon the annode and replace it if needed.
With rocky soil, it might be possible to sift the rocks out. Depends on the ratio of rocks to soil.
Ray-ray, I use old clawfoot iron tubs... buy them for 50... u can easily scrap them for 50-70..so buying them for 50 will always be the winner!! I have 7 thus far as well as one I built out of free river rocks and 5 bags of type s mortar... 40 dollar build and looks fresh😊, God bless you
Did you test these for lead?
@SageandStoneHomestead porcelain coating not raw iron.. but to answer your question directly no! Plant 12 peppers per tub and be ready for the immense yield.. I only dedicate 1 tub to peppers and have enough dill pickled peppers and dried flakes for over 1 year using them daily.. quite prolific with the roots being so warm (zone5)
Great video. Living in California I have always wondered if the metal beds would get to hot and dry out the soil to fast? Thank you Rachel.
According to the companies they both are very good at heat dissipation so that shouldn’t be an issue.
Use a lighter color if heat is a concern, one thing with raised beds though is to make sure you fill them with something that aids in water retention. Raised beds can dry out quicker than ground, that is why i load mine first with stainless steel mesh on ground (keeps moles from tunneling up into your raised beds), cover the mesh with layers of cardboard (helps in weed control), rotten logs/sticks (aids in water retention) then fill the remaining with a good water retaining soil. I buy bags formulated for raised beds which is not the cheapest method by any means, i will say that we have had many dry spells and if you take your hand and scoop up a handful of dirt about 2-3" deep you will almost always find moist soil. Sometimes even after a week or two with no rain.
Vego does have bundles that offer 4 of the 9 in 1 for $100 cheaper than buying them separately, if you are looking for quantity that would be the way I would go and the way I will go when we expand our raised bed growing capacity.
The metal beds look nice, but there is nothing like the classic look of wood raised beds, they are more customizable too. I seal mine with tung oil every year and they last around 12yrs. I use redwood.
I'm glad you're clear on what you like and have found something that works for you. I've never heard of using redwood lumber before actually, so that's very interesting.
@@AuxhartGardening it’s abundant in the state of California and I’ve noticed it has as much longevity as cedar. It’s rot and termite resistant in my area.
Thank you so much for this! I’ve been trying to figure out the difference s.
hmmm''';;;;like your review;;;;already hav raised beds wood;;;4 years now;;;looks like I get a couple more;;;was gifted 3earthboxes and I am impressed;;;the only thing that the extreme weather and grasshoppers didn't destroy this year;;;if it don't freeze which was close this morn35f ;;;;will get a good picking of peppers;;;;gotta have two weeks at least of nice weathe;;my sweetheart loves your sweater;;;enjoyed;;thumbs up and keep em comin
Gardening, yes. But where did you get that gorgeous sweater?!
Great video ! Thanks very much. I have 2 Vego beds but will buy some vegegas because they are on sale and I can save $50 for essentially the same thing. I'm not certain but they seem to be made in the same factory ? I have looked at many comparisons and yours is the only one that talks about the Vego charity program which I will look into as that is something I want to get involved with this year. I think the metal is much better than wood which looks terrible after the first year. If you ever make it up to the land of the Biltmore ... I would be happpy to show you around. Bill
our cedar 3" thick raised beds are rotting after 6 years. starting over just have to choose the most attractive metal ones. thx
I've never heard of that gardening style. Rachel, you look amazing as usual, so this should be interesting. Thanks in advance. 🌹🌹🌹
Slow down there Romeo 😂
Sometimes raised beds are best when dogs coexist with the garden areas. For example, my two poodles enjoy running over my garden spaces during play time, and a large/tall fence would severely cut my yard in pieces. A tall raised bed would deter the dogs from damaging my garden.
That's what I do too! I have a poodle who used to use my row beds as obstacles to leap over. She didn't always make it :D
Hey I have three raised beds that are working great for my area I live in Nevada and our extremely weather makes it difficult to grow plants. Once again thanks for sharing your experience in the garden.🌳🪴🙂
it is some much cheaper to build your own from reclaimed materials and more satisfying.
ANYBODY try untreated LOCUST or CEDAR WOOD for raised beds? I forget which one lasts longer?? Maybe the LOCUST WOOD?
Is there a pattern for crocheting that sweater? And the yarn is just perfect in weight and color. Let me know, please😊
Thanks for commenting on it! The link to the pattern I followed is in the video description, and the yarn I used is Wool of the Andes from KnitPicks in the Bermuda color.
@@AuxhartGardening Found the yarn. Thank you so much! May you have a blessed day!
Thanks for the vid. I have been trying to decide between Vego beds or Vegega beds.
Glad you found it helpful! Posting tomorrow will be a longer review including two other companies, so keep an eye out for that! Which company do you think you'll go with?
@@AuxhartGardening well I’m in the UK so it’s gonna have to be Vegega as the Vego ones seem to be ludicrously priced for us here in the UK.
I helped a farmer, and his crops were in the ground... you do not plant 80 acres of alfalfa in raised beds. BUT, it you are older, don't want to bend down so much, & Raised beds are something that will fit in your space, raised beds may work for you :-) I live in clay, so, for the best place tor tomatoes & peppers, I will make a raised bed, when my wife leaves for Taiwan. She leaves in a week, but are there winter crops that will do well, before I plant tomatoes, peppers, & Zucchini? Sacramento, CA.
We have bad soil, clay. So where doing raised beds. There’s no located near us that you can get compost from.
That's so unfortunate! I wish you the best on your clay. My in-ground garden is right on top of clay as well, but I was able to put a good layer of compost over the top.
Vego beds are made IN CHINA!! VegeGa is made in the U.S.
I don't give a f about what a company says about their charity contributions. I'll do that myself. I'ma go with Vegega.
