    I'm currently an EA, and am looking forward to getting a ring when I am raised to MM. In the meantime, as a watch/pocket watch buff and restorer, I've been putting together a really nice Masonic pocket watch, also to be reserved until MM

    The guidance that was given to me and my cabletow brothers is wait a lil while before wearing the S&C; wait until you're able to explain the meaning of the S&C or "defend" it in the realm of PHA.

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That is good council.

      I must respectfully disagree. No FM (PHA or other) let alone an EA is under any obligation to publicly "defend" Freemasonry or any symbolic item representing membership to the Fraternity. If a newly initiated EA was asked any question about FM or it's symbolism they weren't confident discussing they should be encouraged to say that they are new to the Brotherhood, still learning and, if the person questioning them is truly interested, that they will endeavor to seek the answer to their question and get back to them.
      There is already an item that serves to distinguish the degrees - The lamp skin apron in it's various designs relevant to each degree. In public they aren't generally worn these days and being seen to be a Mason is about being simply a Mason not which degree you are in my opinion. If anyone asks you can tell them.
      I'd also state if a EA isn't aware of the basic meaning behind the S&C then their Lodge/mentor(s) are not doing what they should be immediately post initiation with regards to (at the earliest opportunity) having freedom of movement to informally walk around and discuss the Lodge, items within it etc. This can be done prior to the formal presentation of the First Degree Tracing Board or post.
      EAs/FCs are Freemasons and should be able to wear pins and rings just as a Master Mason would. Look to places like Australia where EAs are presented FM lapel pins and rings upon being initiated and all Masons from EA to MM can wear the same (often Lodge specific) ring (or another design that may be gifted from a Mason friend or relative or even self purchased). The fraternity should be more inclusive from the get go and do away with any kind of elitist or class attitudes to include such nonsense as "you can't wear a pin or ring until you are a "real" Mason. It is contra to being on the level and equal as Brothers and also contradicts the conclusion of the First Degree initiation where the candidate is informed he is now a Freemason.

    Same goes in TN. There is a specific part of the EA that makes and lets you know that you are a Mason. As far as wearing symbols, I was told not to worry about them at that time. I was instructed to study the craft and wait until receiving my third degree to even worry about that. I was told that I should be able to explain what it means before wearing it. Another great video Brother, keep it up.

    • @WhatisaMason

    Hey brother Jared, the night that I was initiated as an EA, I was given the lapel pin for the Grand Lodge of Minnesota. It does have the MM square and Compass symbol on it, but I was told I could wear it.

    In the Jurisdiction of the UGL of NSW and ACT, membership in the lodge begins in the EA degree. We sign the by-laws in that degree as well as pay our dues starting therefrom. EAs are also entitled to a masonic funeral. At out initiation, the District Grand Inspector of Workings (equivalent to a DDGM) gives you a lapel pin to wear whenever you please. The pin is the S&C in the MM configuration.

    • @eyelabmoyks
      @eyelabmoyks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adding to that; it takes at least a year before you complete your degrees in this jurisdiction. It's not uncommon to see a brother completing his degrees for a span of five years.

    Well I can say that I do agree with you when I was at the end of my EA one of my family members bought me a hat with the square and compass and of course I wore it on several occasions not only because I was proud of finally doing my gift back for EA but also I am proud to say that I am a mason. So for now I will keep that hat tucked in the closet until the right time or as you said every degree has its working tools/emblems. So I think it would be more appropriate for me to wear something that represents my degree I am currently in. Good point.

      Same thing kinda happened. To me ! I left my hat in a movie theater accidentally!! I wish remembered what movie I saw. Snow blower or it wasn't John wick 3 maybe elita the battle angle. Anyways. I left it there. And for some reason. I just never went and got it. I felt the hat found a new home maybe the owner if the movie theater was a Mason. I am petitioning. Have my signatures. Don't feel bad. I wore my mason hat everywhere. And we Mason's asked me about it. I just said my grandpa was a Mason. My great grandma was like tge leader at eastern star. I come from a Masonic family. And go to dinners. But just haven't joined yet personal reasons. I will rise to 33d degree and be a Shriner and Scottish rite.

    Great video brother Jared. I’m approaching my FC soon and this came in quite handy although I wish I would have seen this video prior to EA 1º initiation. I am enjoying it thus far and have fully memorized my OB and moving upward to the 2º. In my jurisdiction and lodge, you can wear the EA S&C however one doesn’t stay in that degree long for the most part so as you mentioned, it may be beneficial to wait. I do have a EA S&C teeshirt but thats all I wanted to invest in until after being raised. I also want to say that in part, it is because of you that I got the inspiration to finally apply to become a Freemason, and guess what, I am loving it. Thank you brother Jared.

    Well, here in Germany from the moment after you initiation, you´re allowed to give your opinion to anything, you are allowed to vote, to discuss the Agenda and you can definitely wear a pin or anything else. Two days after my initiation, i received a pin as a gift from a MM in the Lodge. Here in Germany takes at least 2 years to be raised if you are an active member.

    Here in Ontario, Canada, Victoria District.. pretty well resonates with what you have had to say and your jurisdiction in Mississippi. I don't know if it is illigal or not but it is frowned upon by the order, to be a Cowan basically.
    As for myself, these past 3 months between my first step up to the local lodge, their summertime shut down, being invited to their annual BBQ last week (they hold this during their first meeting, and simple hamburgers were actually really amazing lol) my application was read that night, I have an interview coming this Thursday. :) Truely I can only thank you and many others for the work you do. I'm sure this is a question for the worshipful master of my lodge. But, my grandfather, a past 32nd degree master mason, has bequeathed to me a master mason ring. I'm not wearing it, but very soon I will be initiated into Freemasonry (the interviews have all went well). It has been willed that I keep it once I am initiated into Freemasonry. So, do I just keep it in a safe place until later? My grandfather was a great man, and it would comfort me to wear his ring.

    You can buy FC rings, never seen any EA apparel, but I don’t see the point if you are more than likely going to be raised in a year, on that same token we did have one fella come in for his EA and after that got a full S&C back piece done(tattoo)... we never saw him again.. that could make for some interesting conversation when he takes his shirt off at the beach and gets questioned by a real MM...

    I recently was raised to a Master Mason and at no point did anyone inform of any restrictions regarding symbols. I didn’t have any rings or tee shirts at the time so I guess it wouldn’t have been an issue. I will say this, Freemasonry is losing members every year due to the current social culture in America. I think as an organization we need to discuss how to appeal to this generation and share this wonderful craft.

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think we have certain organizational and administrative needs that can be served better by "updating" how things are done - but as for cultural appeal - I'm not so sure. For me, Freemasonry is great because it stands by its roots, not that it bends in the wind to new trends.

    From my experience someone will counsel the new brother, informing them that while it is okay to accept gifts of pins, etc. or to purchase the same, they cannot publicly wear or display them until after their Raising.
    Somewhat related, another thing that some lodges do either immediately after a new brother's Initiation or Passing, or upon their request, is issue them an Entered Apprentice card or Fellowcraft card, respectively. The card permits them to sit in other lodges within Oklahoma (when open on EA or FC of course) unaccompanied by a Master Mason from their lodge. The primary purpose is to allow them to observe the degree that they just went through at their earliest convenience.

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The card idea is nice. Sounds like y'all use it pretty good too.

    • @keithcurtis6671
      @keithcurtis6671 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We would want an EA or FC to be accompanied to another lodge if they were going to observe a degree appropriate to their level. This is both to be able to answer any questions they may have and to make the necessary introductions and to vouch for their status. We do not issue any document indicating they have been entered or passed. And even if we did, a dues card is not sufficient to be admitted to a Lodge if no one there knows you to be a Mason, you have to be examined as well and we have no examination for an EA and/or FC.

    In my EA initiation (last night) I was awarded a MM lapel pin with an accompanying letter from grand lodge saying "I hope you will be proud to wear this in your community".
    After my ceremony DC said "now I don't recommend you wear this to Lodge, as we all know you are a Mason, wear it in public instead."
    To which I replied; "does this mean I can wear my ring now?".
    "Brother, you are now a Mason, be proud and represent wherever you like."
    This was very surprising to me as I've seen sooo many USA Brothers complaining about EAs and FCs wearing a lapel pin or ring....

    my local GL recognises you as a mason upon EA obligation, and then afterwards the WM or GL representative will give you a pin that (you say represents a MM) but here represents all masonry. So to use your analogy, its not a doctoral certificate, the S&C are the equivalent of a first aid certificate.

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am sorry if I was not clear. For us, the arrangement of the S&C changes with each degree. Most apparel and accessories are designed with the S&C in what we would call the MM arrangement. Yes, as an EA we also consider you a Mason - period - but because the arrangement of our S&C changes through degrees, we advise them against wearing it until they receive the 3rd degree.

      Same here. I was given a Lapel pin the night of my initiation in the form of a MM S&C & another Identical one at a lodge I visited, was presented to me by my Deputy GM, & he encouraged me to wear it where ever or whenever I can. He wanted for me to let people know Freemasonry is still about, & expressed concern for dwindling numbers over the last few decades, hence all the approved Facebook pages etc. I am an EA, & will be a FC in a couple of weeks time.

    So here in the UK while the positions of the compass illustrate the part of the journey the brother has reached, as far as I'm aware we use that symbol to represent the brotherhood when it's on books, clothing, stickers etc. So just as answered in part one of this video, a brother is a brother and displaying the square and compasses just shows his membership.

  • @carterboi31
    @carterboi31 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great Explanation.... What I love most about this video is that it explains in full on how to properly defend and use the logo. For myself I already knew the way if ever i was asked, but moreover i'm extremely glad you made this vid because I can recall having a debate with a brother about this and he is a MM however he didn't think I should be wearing my EA ring even though I could defend my degree when tested. He is from a different country though, In the Caribbean to be exact and they do things a bit differently but what was most funny to me was that he is a MM and didnt recognize that the ring was for an EA and he had it in his hand... had me confused a bit lol. I initially didnt adhere to his request simply because im also a Master Oddfellow and I can honestly say that i comprehend fraternal works and the importance of mastering and being able to defend each level. Im the youngest in both my lodge and I want the elders to see the same enthusiasm they had when they came into the craft.

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could be mistaken, but I do not think that every jurisdiction adjusts the S&Q from EA to MM - it is always in the "MM Style", so to speak. Instead their differentiation is always made by a different apron - not just how the apron is worn, but a completely different apron.

    • @carterboi31
      @carterboi31 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think your right . We have a museum in london with all different kinds of aprons from regular lodge ones to rare ones going all the way back to the point of being marked undated. Its very interesting to know how far the craft has came.

      @everettwhite9874 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aaron Carter
      “... and didn’t recognize the ring was for an EA”
      Maybe, maybe not. Some jurisdictions reserve wearing the S&C until after the MM and as result the usual emblem is shown. Others jurisdictions permit wearing the S&C with other than MM arrangement, however, the brother is still required to have advanced to MM.
      I met some brothers in Thessaloniki who explained this after we noticed the differences between our rings.
      So it’s more to it in some places other than just wearing an EA piece of jewelry, you may be required to defend it. 🤷🏽‍♂️

    This is huge. There was a guy i saw with a Masonic tattoo on his neck. And honestly he seemed mental. I am in the process of becoming a Mason. Petitioning. I have my signatures. Anyways. I have not done my EA. Still though I don't think this guy was a Mason. Who knows. I attend a Israeli dance class at Masonic Lodge but that's not the lodge I am petitioning at. Different one the folk dance group just rents out the dinning room. It us so much FUN! And i like entering in Masonic buildings it does something. Don't want to sound cheesey. But Freeing. I feel free. Like all this fear goes away. Really bizarre. Sort of like Church. But I get confidence as well as a freeing experience. I just learned the different symbols for EA FC and MM. That's rad. Really good video. I never new you couldn't represent that symbol if not a Mason. I have seen Masonic rings in pawn stores. I always thought that was inappropriate. One thing that bothers me is everyone thinks Mason's are rich. I feel like everyone in my lodge is in the military or is maybe well off. Doesn't matter. I will join hopefully!! I have a good chance grandpa was a Mason. And I have a 33 degree that likes me. And signed for me fits my back. Yeeee! Cool video Jared. Good stuff. 🤗😎👍💪🕴️🌻🖤💙🌠

So when I went to take it off he chuckled and said it was okay lol as long as you’re a mason and you’re becoming a master mason within the year you joined it shouldn’t really matter. • @WhatisaMason

      Well, yes. There are, of course, still Operative Masons - folks who are actually in the trade and business of building with stone/brick. Freemasons are the Speculative Masons who might never lay a single stone, but learn moral lessons using the tools/instruments of Masonry.
      However, it is quite common to shorthand Freemason to just Mason, as seen in the MS State Code, and several areas within Freemasonry itself.

    EAs are FMs and should be paying dues, voting and be fully entitled to wear rings, pins and anything else. To do otherwise is contra to all being on the level. It would be like saying if you joined the Marines you couldn't display the USMC emblem until you were a SNCO for example. Silly and in my mind immature and elitist.

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a craft guild, like the stone masons, do you think every newly entered apprentice should be permitted to design the next castle that was to be built? Should everyone be permitted to chisel the stone? Or, are there some basic tasks one must learn first, and then be advanced through their learning?
      If someone spent 10 years working and learning and eventually is set apart by his brethren by an election, should that officer be able to be identified with that office, or should he look like every other apprentice at the job site?
      Being "on the level" is a concept about how we treat each other. Sure, someone may be the newest apprentice, but that doesn't mean I should treat him unkindly. I should listen to his opinion, but he has not yet proven himself to be skilled enough in the craft to vote on how the work should be accomplished.
      Your SNCO example is a great one. That new Pvt doesn't get to come into the Marines and slap on a SgtMaj rank. Same applies here. The square and compasses aren't just the logo of freemasonry, if you will. Instead they represent the rank achieved by the man wearing them. And, as I stated in the video, you can find EA and FC jewelry, if you really want, but if you put any effort at all in your advancement, you'll earn the MM degree long before that Marine can become a SgtMaj, so, perhaps, most would rather just wait and spend their money once, rather than buying the jewelry for each rank along the way.

    • @titaniumquarrion9838
      @titaniumquarrion9838 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WhatisaMason designing a castle requires skill, knowledge and experience the apprentice does not have. Wearing an accoutrement representing being a member of a group requires no experience only that the person wearing it is a member of the organization.
      The issue here is that in certain places the S&C is seen to denote rank vs simple belonging as it does in other places. Freemasonry has degrees not ranks they are very different things. In the military rank denotes superiority both legally and in authority in Freemasonry jewels and certain items of dress etc denote the FM has stewardship (temporary) of a role or position or has achieved certain milestones in their past but, even though they may have/had additional tasks/responsibility, are in no way superior or above their fellow Brothers. Knowledge/Skill + Experience = Wisdom is seen as something to unite through sharing vs a source of power or authority over others.
      I see the S&C (if we use the military analogy) as the USMC emblem which all Marine's wear for example not as a rank. Other Mason's clearly see it as rank.
      With regard to voting the EA or FC is only present in Lodges opened to the degree they have reached so they only vote on matters relating to their degree. Should a matter require consideration from more experienced Masons then it should simply be reserved for Lodges opened in the 3rd Degree.
      I have mentioned before that in places like Australia EAs pay dues, vote and at their initiation as EAs are presented a S&C lapel pin from the Grand Lodge. They are also often presented a signature tie or ring representing their specific lodge resplendent with S&C! In short "Down Under" the S&C is seen as the symbol of all Freemason's and not a badge of rank reserved for MM. I believe that is the way to go and it certainly works. If anyone can see how that could be negative in any sense I'd be interested to know why.
      Not only is this a massive deal to those new EAs it makes them feel from the outset they are truly Masons (which they undoubtedly are despite their lack of experience). It in no way detracts from the accomplishment of being passed to the second or becoming a MM. It also serves to help with spreading the word about FM with all the EAs and FCs able to display the iconic symbolism which often sparks discussion about The Craft from those that otherwise would never have known they were FMs.
      Finally people talk of the S&C as a symbol earned as MM after having "paid your dues' and through experience attaining MM. The fact some places hand out MM in a day makes that point of view redundant. In one place a person can attain MM and wear the S&C in hours while a FC who may have been a Mason for a year cannot? I would argue the EA or FC who has been so for months has a broader understanding of Freemasonry than the one day MM. Yes they are not yet privvy to certain elements handed out to the MM in mere hours relevant to each degree but they would have likley spent countless more hours in those months reading about and discussing Freemasonry, the Liberal Arts and Sciences, spirituality, preparing for their next examination etc and would run rings around the newly minted one day MM.
      This may shock non Masons but you can attain MM by simply ticking boxes, doing some memory work and attending a set number of Lodges also without spending a single moment outside of that studying or applying the tenets of Freemasonry. You can also do it in a day with dozens or even hundreds of others in some places and have zero depth of knowledge ro even a sound base understanding fo FM then get theoretically around chastising a FC with 6 months or more as a FM for having a S&C bumper magnet??? What I am getting at is I also know EAs and FCs that dedicate more time to learning and applying FM than some MMs ever will. It is also not uncommon to see a EA or FC discussing a matter pertaining to FM that a MM present clearly has zero clue about....
      In short (after that long reply) I maintain my belief, supported by the fact in many places it is common practice and works to the benefit of junior FMs in their sense of belonging and the Brotherhood in having more exposure to the general public, that the S&C is the symbol of all FMs and not a badge of rank to be reserved for MM and as such should be worn proudly by all FMs regardless of Degree or experience. I also question how one becomes a "Master" without attending Lodge? Using the castle analogy that would be like the head planner/builder being in charge who had been given such title in a day and had never set foot in a castle before! If that were the case I rather the apprentice with 6 months of study and practical skills to have the job :-)

      Brother, I appreciate your position and how well you defended it. Since anybody of any age, gender, intent, etc., can get what ever masonic pin they want online (why stop at the S&C, why not get a 33rd cross, or a Rosicrucian pin), the whole concern I have is, admittedly, moot. Further, all the jurisdictional differences certainly complicate matters. As you say, if I wear a S&C pin to AUS, I'll be be presumed to a mason, period. However, if someone from AUS visits a lodge in my area and wears a S&C, but says he is an EA, the brethren would raise an eyebrow - mostly in ignorance because they don't know the jurisdictional differences. This is why, of course, we rely on the modes of recognition and not jewelry.
      Practice properly, I would argue that a MM ought to have skill, knowledge and experience that the EA does not, just as with your castle builder. However, I accept your argument that that simply is not how the craft is practiced today. And that, to me and many others, is a large part of the equation that calculates what is "wrong" with Freemasonry today. MM's and EA's should work together and be "on the level" with one another, but the EA ought to be assured that the MM is in fact more informed than he and the MM ought to be always operating in a mentoring capacity - but that pipe dream just isn't what most of us experience. Instead we get EA's who think they know everything, or want to know everything day 1 (and some jurisdictions do, as you say, accommodate that desire by providing the title and degree of MM in a day), just as much as we have MM's who are utterly incapable of being mentors. This disparity is, in my eye, part of the reason Freemasonry is constricting, not expanding. Not that expansion is the goal - but when folks join and find out that even the MM's have no clue what they are talking about... why go back?
      As such, we need to be asking applicants, point blank, if they truly feel they can improve upon themselves or not. Granted, they may simply give the expected "yes" answer, but if the mentor is doing their job properly they can gently whisper wise council into that Brother's ear and remind them that before they came a Mason they knew there was some personal growth to work on. This is useful should the brother start to waiver and express that he, somehow, 'knows better' than an officer in the lodge. Sure, he might (say he's a certified accountant and the treasurer does nothing financial for his employment). But there's still some passion to subdue there, and that's what the mentor is for.
      Anyhow, I wish we could have this conversation in person, I would enjoy hearing more of your thoughts.

      @@WhatisaMason Yes there are certainly cultural differences within Freemasonry. The key is of course (as we all well know) to respect whatever is the norm in the area we live and, just as with visiting other countries/cultures, to also be aware of any differences when we visit or interact interstate or abroad. While there are far more similarities than differences it is the differences that make visiting or even just bumping into Masons from other states, countries and cultures all the more interesting! With regard to earlier interaction and involvement of EAs/FCs prior to becoming MMs I believe it can only serve to them more rounded MMs (so long as they apply themselves). Others disagree with that methodology and are 100% within their right to do so. As with all endeavors we get out what we put in and in my experience the vast majority of FMs certainly put a lot of time, effort and study into The Craft. Love the channel and open honest discussions. If anyone out there thinks there is benefit to the exclusion of EAs/FCs from Lodge etc I'd certainly be keen to get their points of view and rationale.....
