      I believe that people join under the premise presented to them... which is the focus on doing good deeds, but they aren't taught the darker spiritual truth behind the order, rituals, etc. My mother and i joined the Eastern Star Order. When she became born again, she denounced membership. Glad that she found out the truth! The words, Secret Society fits this well because there are secrets held back about what being joined to the order are not revealed to the innocent members that are unaware of what the oaths or rituals really represent.😢

      @@Billy-id9kb So, you believe in a place called Hell, and you feel that you have the right to determine who should go there? Obviously you profess to be a religious man, but you really feel that you have the right to make a judgment on who belongs there? You know the mind of God? I can confidently say that you do not know the the mind of God, and neither do I. If anything religion teaches us is that God is love, nothing but love. Knowing THAT reality is beyond your comprehension. Make your reality as you will, and let others make theirs. There are many roads to God, and God is waiting at the door for all of us. Having grown up with it (my parents were Worthy Matron/Patron together) I've always seen Eastern Star as a type of ladies' auxiliary of freemasonry, rather than a separate masonic sorority. Keep in mind it is still an Appendent(dependent) body of freemasonry.

    Love the tie Brother! Thanks for the link.
    I learned quite a bit from this video. My wife is in the process of joining OES. My Lodge does not have an associated chapter, so she is joining the chapter near where we live. She got introduced to OES by some ladies in her exercise class as they found out through conversation that I was a MM. I have yet to decide is I will join, I will wait to hear from my wife and see how she feels about it. We like to have "our own things" and "things we do together", so we will see how she feels about OES!

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am going to tell you how it is:
      My wife wanted to be a part of something. She had a friend who talked-up the OES, but she was determined that I would be there with her because as much as she wants friendships and to be a part of something crowds of people certainly are not her thing. So I was brought in more as a shield than anything, lol.
      Now, of course, she has a lot of other friends and I can sort of hide off in a corner for want of another guy to hang with while my wife does chats up the ladies.

    Greetings from California! I don't know if you are still monitoring or working on this channel, but I thought I would add some information for you and other interested parties. Most of what you said is correct up to a point, but not the entire story. In fact, I would dare to say that most Eastern Star people don't even know the full story. The Order of the Eastern Star was the initiatory degree of the eventual 3 degree order of what was originally known as the "Adoptive Rite of the World." It was to be a three degree order intended to reflect the three degrees of the blue lodge. After the first degree was instituted, Masonry came under a huge amount of criticism for involving women. They were accused of taking women out of the home, giving them airs above their station, and other such nonsense. The second degree, called, "The Queen of the South," was created to address this issue. It takes place in the court of King Solomon, who has been given a mandate from God to share certain information with other leaders. The Queen of Sheba visits to receive this special information, but Solomon says, "Sorry, you're just a woman." One by one the members of the court stand up to defend women, citing references from scripture that shows they are trustworthy, intelligent, righteous, and have been called by God at different times to serve His purposes. In the end, of course, Solomon says, "I see I have been wrong, etc." The third degree, created about 10 years on by Robert McCoy was The Order of the Amaranth. Another mason, James B. Taylor, had seen a Swedish heraldic/chivalric order known as The Order of the Amaranthus, and had liked some of the symbology and phrases, and had thought it could be adapted for use in an adoptive rite order. Robert McCoy liked what Turner had written and used it as the basis of for creating the third and final degree. In 1873, the Adoptive Rite of the World was completed, and the rituals of the three degrees appropriately copyrighted and filed with the Library of Congress. Just as in masonry, one degree had to be passed before receiving the next, and all were overseen by one governing body. Eastern Star meetings and Queen of the South would meet on the same night, but the third degree, The Order of the Amaranth met separately. By 1920, the 19th Amendment had been ratified giving the right to vote to women, and mainline masonry decided that the Queen of the South ritual had served its purpose and was no longer needed, and the two remaining degrees, Order of the Eastern Star, and Order of the Amaranth were separated into two completely separate organizations. Interestingly enough, Prince Hall Masonry still uses the three degree format of Eastern Star, Queen of the South, and Order of the Amaranth. When one of our local Eastern Star chapters wanted to host an exemplification of the Queen of the South ritual, they asked the local Prince Hall chapter for permission first, as they did not want to offend anyone, and it is still an active part of the ritual work for them. Luckily they were not offended, and gave their permission. - Today, if you happen to know any Amaranth people, or have been to one of their installations, it is easy to see the relationship between the orders, as many of the offices are the same. There are differences of course, and more officers in an Amaranth court. The members are referred to as "Honored Ladies," and "Sir. Knights." having received the accolade, and the "Royal Matron" wears a crown, while the Royal Patron wields a sword. Instead of 5 star points, Amaranth has four "ladies of the square," representing four final, filial virtues; Truth, Faith, Wisdom and Charity. -- Being a member of both Eastern Star, (past matron) and Amaranth (past royal matron), and having participated in the exemplification of the Queen of the South, I consider myself lucky to have seen the original vision created by our founders. - Interestingly enough, here in California, about 2/3 of the members of Amaranth are also members of Eastern Star, but I know that not all states still have Amaranth. Under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Council Amaranth currently has forty Grand Courts, located in the United States, Canada, Australia, Philippines and Scotland. - I hope you find this information of interest and wish you all the best in your efforts to educate and lift up our masonic family. By the way, I'd love to see some informational videos on our three youth groups as well. DeMolay, Rainbow for Girls, and Job's Daughters. They have all passed their 100th anniversaries, and are still serving the youth of our communities and our greater masonic family.

    Quick question: I heard a couple weeks ago from a Past Worthy Patron that new eligibility requirements for women are coming down from the General Grand Chapter. He said that in the near future, instead of having to be related to a Master Mason or having to spend at least three years in Rainbows or Job's Daughters, a woman wishing to join will only require the endorsements of two Master Masons in good standing. Have you or your wife heard anything about this change?

Once upon a time music and storytelling were our only forms of entertainment (perhaps a bit too general, but I believe you'll understand my point). Now we have so many other options, and so many musicians, that the drive for many to learn how to play an instrument is pushed to the back. Thanks for watching! I think it will be too! A lot of symbolism in there - but, at least in my area, a lot of unnecessary pomp as well. It took me a while to get past that and focus on the message, not the delivery. Mind you - I'm not really speaking about the degree(s), but of the "introductions" that can really drag a meeting down.

    Awesome video! This really answered a lot of my questions. I’m looking into joining my local chapter as my great grandfather was a master mason for 50 years & my great grandmother was a member of the OES. I do have to ask, I am curious why 1 woman wouldn’t also need to be at the Freemason meeting? Since you mentioned the discussion of scripture taking place at the OES meetings, I am assuming discussion of scripture takes place at a Freemason meeting as well. I’d also assume the same rationale of having a male present for the OES meetings would apply for Freemasons needing a women at their meetings to help their interpretation of the scripture. Could you provide some insight on this topic? Great video!👍🏻

      I am happy that the video helped. One key thing most people presume is that the star being inverted is somehow bad, when in reality it is attempting to mimic the star that pointed the way to the birth of Christ, which the Wise Men followed. But, some people have wild imaginations. I hope you and your husband end up joining - I think you'll enjoy it.

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I presume you are specifically speaking to the Order of High Priesthood - A chair degree conferred upon installed or past High Priests.
      Well, where I live, one has to be a Master Mason, which could take 3 months or longer. Then you have to join the York Rite, which here only comes around twice per year. Then you have to go "up the line" in the Chapter, which could take any number of years, depending on how quickly the Chapter advances you.... Let's assume at least 3 years, but as many as 7. Then, after you have served as the High Priest of the Chapter, you wait for the "Chair Degrees" to come around. I believe that only happens once, maybe twice per year here.
      All in all - I think it is fair to assume that it would take about 10 years from the moment you become a Freemason before it is possible you would have the Order of the High Priesthood.
      Why are you so interested in that particular honor? I'm sure you are aware, it isn't the "actual" priesthood.

      @@WhatisaMason I was told by family my great grandfather was that. I have been very interested in joining tge Freemasons for a long time. However all my family that I habe been told was a Mason has passed and I have no real proof. So I was just introduced to a Mason through another family member last week and he asked what my goals where if I was ro be accepted. Also he said being that he has to get to know me and because he is not family it takes up to 12 months just to be a apprentice here in Georgia. Does that seem right? To me that seems like a long time to just be a apprentice? I am really excited for this journey and I am even more excited to be the only living person in my family alive who hopefully will be a Freemason to pass down to my son. I do profess Christianity so thatbis why I want to go the York Rite and Knights Templars route, however it may change with knowledge who knows and from what I understand you can go in the direction of both York and Scottish Rite. Also yes I do know it is not a real priesthood😀!

    • @WhatisaMason
      @WhatisaMason  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      12 months doesn't seem long at all. True apprenticeships last multiple years. Sure, we're a Fraternity, but there is something to be said about patience being a virtue. He may also be putting several things into that 12 month time frame. The lodge may have a certain amount of time that it is required for someone to have "known" you. Then once you petition, it could take 3 months for all of the official stuff to get done. The lodge may have a backlog of degrees and even once you are voted in it might take a few months to get your EA. Then, depending on their requirements and your abilities, it could take a few months before you can pass to the FC. However, in some jurisdictions (mostly overseas to my knowledge), you have to attend lodge events/dinners for a year, just to show your dedication, before they'll even let you submit a petition. Moral of the story: it could be worse.

      I'm not here to make an argument of whether it is right or wrong, but it is arguably Biblical, for better or worse. Yeah, sure, a male has to be there, but the Worthy Matron, the woman, is 100% in charge. In practice, there is no "need" for a man to be there. The women handle everything, or could handle everything, in my opinion.

      What is a Mason ..... Oh come on now! I'd believed you bigger than that. I made a "comment/statement." Neither a question, debate nor "argument" was evnen remotely indicated. Nebertheless, if "oversight" of women's meetings were not of some essence I'm sure it would not have been included as an observation thereby making it questionable.

      I'm sorry that you seem to have taken my comment as being aggressive, it was not intended to be so. I wasn't meaning that I was "arguing" with you in a hostile way, nor that you were to me.
      As I suggested in the video any my comment, I believe, but I do not know, that it is a "thing" for a man to have to be present because, in Biblical times, everything was Patriarchal - the men were in charge, period. Since the Order of the Eastern Star is inherently Biblical, I think the "argument" is that the chapter is set up to represent biblical times as much as possible, ergo, requiring a man to be in present, even if he isn't in charge. But I'll keep saying it - that's just my assumption, I am not really sure if that is why or not. But, the whole system was written by a man, for women... so it does seem to fit.

      What is a Mason .... No need to be sorry. I am not thin skinned. As for biblical times "always" being "pariarchal," well you should know there were times "before" patriarchal dynasty.
      The biblical times you are expressing resulting in charters such as Freemasons and the OES are counter to the "will" of our Creator who is the ochetrator of "law." As for your "assumptions," they are wanting.

      I agree - assumptions are not good. I will endeavor to learn more about why it is required for a man to be present. And, for clarity sake, I am not above admitting the possibility that it is merely due to a man having been the author of this work during a time (1850) when women were also seen as being less than a man (the right to vote not coming until 1920). As such, it is entirely possible that it has nothing to do with the Bible and everything to do with the perception men in general had of women in general (not that such misogyny doesn't still exist, but I would say that it is less than in 1850).
      I think it's a part of the nature of the Freemasons and the Order of the Eastern Star that cause me to at least hope that that isn't the case. Freemasonry very much teaches respect of Women, and OES is very biblical. So, I went that route first.
      Heck, for all I know it was simply a matter of men feeling chivalrous, at least in their own minds. Under this theory a man has to be present because he's there to make sure no unwanted individuals break into a chapter full of the mothers, daughters, wives, sisters, and widows of Master Masons. So, in this 1850's viewpoint, the ladies are just "safer" because a man is present.
      Again, more assumptions. I'll see if I can't find any actual set by-laws or other rules that stipulate the "why". However, I wager that the best I'll be able to come up with are "traditions" that answer the "why". Thanks!

      I completely feel you on this. I feel like if I have on short sleeves then I shouldn't have a tie. Perhaps in a few months I can look into ordering long sleeved shirts too - I'll want them anyway over winter.

      You can attempt to contact the Grand Lodge of Texas to see if they can come up with any information. They will appreciate you telling them everything you can - his full given name, his dates of birth and death, the best information you have on where he lived... anything may be helpful.
