I think it is a good skill to develop. I have a 7yr old daughter who made the school swim team here in Bangkok. I wanted her to learn how to open her eyes underwater without googles to be prepared for swim race situations as she gets older when her googles may slip off during a race especially during the starting dive in the water and get her in the mind set that she can swim the race without googles. Got her comfortable doing it in a saltwater pool and now she does it in chlorinated pools. In fact, I have to fight with her sometimes to wear the googles.

I saw you rub your eyes when you'd been underwater and came up. I teach my students not to rub the eyes (make them sore), but to blink, blink, blink. "That's why you have eye lids, squash the water away". When they first go under and come up, i wipe my hand across their forehead, from one side to the other, to minimise the amt of water running down the face into their eyes.

Ocean water and pool water may not be clean. Always a risk.
