It's official, Neymar has left Nike and has signed a new boot deal with Puma! The internet's reaction to this move has been a mixed bag, but overall I think it was a solid move for both parties. Neymar got paid and Puma got a very high-profile, and more importantly, a very influential footballer to help bring people to the brand and hopefully sell some boots. What could go wrong? Well, they could have Neymar wear the Puma King...
While this is all just a matter of opinion, in this video I share my thoughts on this big move, and what I believe is already a huge mistake being made by Puma in utilizing Neymar to sell more football boots. Was this the right decision? Will the Puma King be able to make a comeback? Let's talk about that.

For the record, is it possible that Neymar chose to wear the Puma King himself, absolutely. With that said, the Puma Neymar relationship is based on an endorsement deal, meaning that Neymar is paid to represent the brand in the best light possible. He chose Puma because they paid him the most money, that's how endorsement deals work. They use his influence to market their products and have effectively "purchased" his opinion and his preferences. So when Puma says that Neymar picked the King himself, please take that with a grain of salt. Remember when Neymar "picked" the Nike Hypervenom Phantom 2, even though Nike had to make him a custom pair of Mercurials disguised as Hypervenoms to even get him to wear them! That's marketing folks. Just because a brand told you it's true, doesn't mean it is. Let's also keep in mind that the custom boots Neymar will actually wear won't necessarily be the same as the boots us consumers will be able to purchase. Like I said in the video, no hate towards Neymar or Puma at all, I just think it's a strange decision.

It's just a temporary move to market neymar with heritage line. It's just a matter of time until puma develop neymar's own signature boots and complementary apparel line. I completely disagree with the comment onthat this video that said this is a stupid move, or puma heritage line that nobody care. I personally love puma heritage line, and many football fans share a similar affection towards classic heritage line. In a world where football boots are all about advancement and hi-tech, it's a breath of fresh air to see a brand that still develop their heritage line, and create them with the latest tech. Best of both world 😉
As a Brazilian, i would say that the fact that this boot was chosen as Neymar's first with Puma has a great significance here in Brazil, and not only with older football fans. We have a culture around the mystique of the "chuteira preta", since it is the best known boot in Brazil (trust me, it is better known than any other Nike or Adidas boot) because it is a symbol of beautiful and classic football, for being associated with Pelé. I'm not saying that what Puma did was right or wrong, but just wanted to show my vision of the impact that this announcement had in Brazilian fans. I also believe that Neymar should have his own signature boot, and that this announcement with King was just a way to attract the attention of all Brazilians, since if they had chosen any other boot it wouldn't have the same impact (sorry if i said something wrong, i'm still learning english)

No knocks towards Neymar at all, because I don't think this was his call. Like I said in the video, I get Puma's angle with this, but I also think it's totally unrealistic to think that Neymar fans who currently wear Mercurials, one of the most modern tech focused boots out there, are going to willingly jump ship and buy traditional looking, black and white leather boots. I'd love it to happen, leather boots are great, but it goes against every trend in football boots we've seen over the last decade. It's bold, but I'm not convinced it's smart. What if the pictures released is just to show Neymar in this boot for now, and they could be developing his own personal boot to be released in a few months. I haven’t read all the details or comments yet, but I would expect him to be wearing his own new boot by 2021. When I watched the ad I was impressed. I think puma did an amazing job with that. It brilliantly executed. To use the greats that all wore the puma kings was just perfect 👌🏼 hopefully he stays wearing them because it think it’ll help puma and we needed a puma king out on the field. This is a pretty bad and super premature take, TBH. The Ultra has momentum already, and has man like Griezmann and Aguero wearing it. Future has its own momentum and has man like Suarez and Reus in it. The King Platinums I believe is literally just Neymar. So if course it wasn't selling before - it wasn't being promoted. Put a high profile footballer in it and of course the sales will go way up. That's basic marketing.
The other thing this tells you is clearly they're devoting more attention to that silo. With the killing off of the One and the intro of the Ultra nobody knows what they plan to evolve to King into. At the very least new colourways will be coming, and probably an updated boot isn't far off.

I agree with Josh. There are roughly 3 key reasons someone may buy a football boot. The boot itself, the color/design scheme, and then the player who endorses it. My point being, when people bought Neymars mercurial, my opinion is the first reason they would buy it is because it’s a mercurial (arguably the most popular Nike boot), second reason being because Neymars boot typically had a very cool unique design to it that the younger generation loved, then the third/less popular reason someone would buy it is because they love Neymar and only care about wearing what he wears.

I’ve worn Mercurials since I was 14, I tried doing a switch in 2017 with some adidas ace boots bc they looked awesome and were very uncomfortable. Perhaps he did the switch and preferred those boots specifically due to comfort. And the line “KING” could help puma with that line
The reality is all football boots are super colourful with neon colours and the likes. I feel like it's gotten to a stage where a black football boot will make him stand out in comparison to yet another neon coloured boot. Zig when the rest zag, it's a brave move but think it could well work

Being a king wearer for 20 years, I must say after wearing the new Nike mercurial, I will never go back. The mercurial speed boot- sock like feel makes the kings feel very loose like they will fall off.
It is a smart idea because back at nike neymar wore the hypervenom 2 which everyone said was bad but like I said before it doesn't matter what type of boots you wear and nike made alot of money selling some signiture hypervenoms for neymar puma are doing the same with the king platinum cuz it's a good boot it just doesn't have alot of recognition so I guarantee in the future we will see some signiture King platinums and Ultras that puma will make alot of money off of
Actually, if you follow Neymar on Instagram, you'll see, he posted about football legends like Cruyff, Pele, Maradona and many more, and he told how he was inspired by them... and now getting that motivation from them, he decided to choose the classic Puma King, as similar boots were used by his childhood heroes, Neymar basically wants to bring back the classic era of football, and personally, I'm loving it!

Maybe cause I am 23 and been watching your videos for years and seeing my personal preference is, well was a tiempo, award how good copa’s are. But as with the newer times I have gone with The Phantom Vnm as my go to, as hypervenoms faded I did want to try a Puma King. I always have liked it and wondered how the fit was. Didn’t really suit me but it is a good boot that maybe if I gave into the process, would’ve enjoyed. But this is where you’re right. The newer stuff is just more slip on and go. It’s wearing an experience. Not breaking into an experience. It’s all about the tech sometimes but I was one to say “I want a Puma King” haha
I’m not sure Josh. Remember that the Tiempo like 10-15 years ago, when it was called Nike Air Legend, was not a very popular boot at all. It was more Nike’s heritage boot with both lower status and price compared to say the Mercurial. But by giving the Tiempo more marketing including putting high calibre players (like Ramos for example) in the boots they have now become one of Nike’s most popular boots. A really BIG change. The Puma King is a legendary boot line (more so than the Tiempo was back in the day) and I think what they are doing makes great sense if they want to rebuild the King into a key boot-silo for them. The other piece of the puzzle is of course to keep making great King boots (not the inconcistancy that have sadly plagued Puma).
I get what you're saying, but it's not a fair comparison. 15 years ago leather boots in general were significantly more popular, so with the right marketing, it was a lot easier to get people to try something that was somewhat similar to a boot that they might have already been wearing. Leather boots in 2020 are not the most popular, especially against the younger demographic that Neymar is going to be the most influential with. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it seems very unlikely that they'll be able to convince a significant number of people to switch out of a high tech, modern boot like the Mercurial, and into a relatively simple, leather boot like the King. They're great boots, but one that I don't see them being able to maintain hype around.
Light weight leather boots are trending. Putting Neymar in the King is an interesting move - possibly very smart. I can imagine they’ll release an updated, modernized King soon. I see the King moving into the territory of the Morelia Neo and the new Diadora Brasil Elite.

It makes absolute sense, the new puma cleats are endorsed by players like Aguro and Suarez. Having Neymar where a pair that didn’t initially sell well may be their chance to grab attention towards this cleat.

I‘m pretty sure that he will be switching to Ultras sooner or later, I bet that he wears the King Platinums for a couple of games or maybe half a year until a „facelifted“ Version of the Ultras will be released as a Neymar signature colourway
