My Dad died in May! Before he died I promised him I would take my fitness seriously! I am no runner but I am training for the Brighton marathon next year! Love your videos it helps so much ❤️
@@Runswithemily Thank you so much! Quick question, I run around 7 minutes per KM but I haven’t done more than 8K yet (building up!) my goal is just to finish and get a medal! Do you know what the cut off is for Brighton to get a medal, I heard 7 hours?
Also just a tip, do some hill training. My training was done on total flat because I didn’t look at the route hahaha. I think it’s like 200m of elevation, at least that’s what my Strava picked up :) they’re not crazy hills but better to know they’re coming then go in oblivious like I did
So sorry… good luck on your running n fitness journey. Always remember your why as it will give you strength. I’m a slow runner gal too about to start my half marathon plan again after 4 years!
omg, thank you so much for the "I don't have kids" mention! I do have kids and I'm a bit annoyed when people say "you need to sleep" because I have zero power on the hours of sleep I get ahah, so thank you! And thank you for your tips and your content, it's really great and helpful! (I'm prepping for my first marathon, Paris Marathon next April!)
I have 3 kids, 9months to 4yo. Between work and parenting it is so difficult to find the time to train. It's been annoying to watch other youtubers talk about their training schedules, wishing I had that kind of flexibility lol. But it's possible, I just did my first marathon last weekend. You can too!
Agree. I’m finally training for my first full marathon only because both my kids are both in elementary school together now, so from 7am to 2pm, and I know I can get my long runs in each week now. But before this, I’ve only been able to do 5k’s and a half marathon. 😂 for reference my kids are 6 and 9.
Absolutely loved every minute of London. My one regret is not paying attention to my sodium intake, as it was too low when I finished which meant that once I had crossed the finish line and stopped running I threw up.
This is great. I’ve been following you and it’s been great to see someone like me out there. For my first marathon, I made two mistakes. I had earbuds that were not great quality. An hour into the run, they both failed, batteries completely dead. I ran most of my first marathon without any music! That was a mental feat. The second was that I ended up getting orthotics two weeks before the race. I tried to get used to them in that time but it wasn’t long enough. I’m sure they contributed to a lot of my discomfort towards the end of the race. All that aside, there’s nothing like crossing the finish line after running my first marathon. Can’t wait to do it again.
Ahhh the headphones dying is a killer!! When I did a half marathon I completely forgot my headphones and that was just the worst. ‘Mistakes’ are good though because it just means we know more going into our next race!
I started training for my first half marathon this year. I'm not sure if I'll do a marathon, but this was still really helpful. I never understood how you might go about training for a marathon that is a ways out. So many plans are only for a few months leading up to the race, maybe 6 months max. Your approach to just do a 5k training, then 10k etc. is so smart!
I really liked taking my time and doing multiple plans and focusing on distances that gradually increase. Also gives you the chance to actually see if you like running those longer distances before you commit to a marathon :)
I just completed my first marathon and I completely agree with some of these. 1.) Absolutely should've done strength training. I started cycling to work and thought this would be sufficient but I might've avoided a calf strain 3 weeks out from the marathon had I done strength training. 2.) Now that I've been through it, I don't know that I would go easier on myself next time lol. But I took it pretty hard when I missed a run, now I understand I can miss some - yes, even long runs - and still come out okay. 3.) It's soooo hard not to compare yourself when EVERY running channel is talking about their sub 4 hour marathons. Lol 4.) I have 3 young kids. Getting more sleep is just not happening lol. I ran on 4-5 hours of sleep a night through my whole training block just to have the time to fit in my training. This aspect alone keeps me doubtful that I'd want to do it again What I would do differently in addition to these would be starting my training block so that it completes a week or two before the marathon date, just to account for a missed week or minor injury along the way. My training plan ended 4 days before my race, made for a very stressful final 3 weeks of having a strained calf and being unable to run. I showed up to the race unsure if my calf was healed enough to even go 5k, it was extremely demoralizing. Also I would fuel differently. I at an orange slowly for the first 10 miles, then honey packets and sour patch kids every subsequent mile. I did not hydrate enough, either. I can't do the gels because my stomach can't handle them, but I should've experimented more with fueling options rather than just settling on honey and gummies lol.
Great video, I'm nearly 2 weeks away from my first half marathon and its made me think I do need to plan my eating the day before as I will be travelling and freaking out! Good luck for your ultra!
Thanks for documenting -- I have a half planned for this Saturday 10/26 (Halloween Half) -- guess the last few races I have done a half and 10 miles last Sunday I have been about 4-5 minutes slower than I have hoped 2:34:5 for the half and 2:02:05 for my Army 10 miler (Virtual) -- appreciate your views
Thank you for a very inspiring video. I really love your content, it's so relatable. I hope to run my first maraton next year in september. I have ran 6 halfs and on sunday I'm doing another one which also is a maraton where you do two rounds instead of one. If I like the route I'll sign up for the maraton
Hey Emily, I decided to subscribe to your channel after I saw you eating a crisp sandwich 😂. My furthest run is 10km, but watching your videos makes me think I could maybe go a bit further…..! Good luck in the Ultra!
I was supposed to run my fourth half marathon last week, but I had to cancel, because of being ill 😢 based on it i wanted to decide if I should run a full marathon next year. I'm scared of doing the actual deciding. (and the winters here are very snowy and cold, so I just KNOW i wont be running very much during that time.)
As a fellow slow runner, I really appreciate your content. I'll be running a 13k race at the end of the month, but then I'm considering doing a half marathon in March. I live in Germany, so we share dark and cold winters with the UK haha! How did you manage to train during the winter months? Did you run at night or did you manage to run during daytime because you work freelance?
Did you sign up to a gym for strength training, or did you do exercises at home? I am not a gym rat either and don't know what strength training exactly I should do 😄

I’m so sorry for your loss. Your dad will be so proud when you cross that finish line next year. Brighton is an amazing marathon 💖

Yes!! I’m pretty sure it’s 7 hours from when the final wave sets off :)

Yay, thank you so much!!!! 💖💖💖

London looked unreal! Ahhh nooo :( it’s so hard to remember everything we need to do during the race to keep our bodies happy!

Strength training is key - I say this coming off a 6 month injury because my glutes, hips, back - everything were weak 😭.

Brilliant, no nonsense advice as always Emily

Be bold, start cold! Wear one layer less than you think you need.
