The Makarov is a fine pistol. It works and shoots a okay cartridge. There are ways to do a quick magazine change. I had a old Russian Officer show me how to operate one and shoot it.
You can put a keyring through the hole in the mag release but I never felt the heel mag release was hard to use -just different. It's also one fewer thing on the grip to snag on a pocket draw If you know how to shoot accurately you don't even need all the rounds in the magazine for the vast majority of civilian self-defense scenarios.
I own a russian made Mak that I have carried for years. It is not my main carry gun but has spent many hours on my person and by my bed. It is rugged, reliable, and accurate. People often point out the tiny sights, but this weapon lines up with the target remarkably well. I have owned several PPKs and this is my second Makarov. The Mak is s better gun. It eats any ammo I feed it from surplus junk to all defense ammo I have tried. The Walthers were both ammo finicky. And much less comfortable to shoot. Yes, the Russians developed the Mak by studying the Walther. But strip down both guns and you will see the Mak is not a copy. They improved a lot and flat out changed some things entirely. Is the gun dated by modern standards? It sure is. There are countless better options available today. That said, the Mak is still a solid choice for self defense.
Somebody here mentioned that it is just a bigger copy of the Walther PP . At first glance yes but internally it is way more simplyfid in a pretty genius way and has about 20 parts less then the Walther PP by keeping the general same functions. Way more robust design and better for miltary service. And i have to say that even as a Walther PP/ PPK fanboy.
Excellent video and very interesting pistol... I chose the Tokarev over the Makarov. The Tokarev cartridge is much more interesting and powerful than 9x18mm. The Makarov sound's ballistics are between the 380 Auto and 9mm Luger. All that said, you've made me rethink picking one up. Prices are definitely rising, so better not to wait much longer to get one. Agree, Atlantic Firearms is a good source!
When they first came to the US and for several years after they were one of the best value dollar ratios for a self-defense pistol. Now that's not really the case anymore but they still have all the nostalgia and history going for them.
Makarovs are as rugged as there AK counterparts! The real advantages to the makarovs are its simple design, ease of manufacture, ability to be mass manufactured easily, and cheap production cost!
A while back I bought 4 of em. All Bulgarian and all in the box and all appeared to have never been fired. I paid the princely price of $125 each for em. At the same time there were two brands of ammo steel cased and made in Russia and it went for like $90 a thousand so I bought 4k or so rounds. Still have 500 or so. I have never had a malfunction. The accuracy from the bench at 25 yards is around 3" A lot of family and friends have shot these guns and they all like them but.... Being a straight blowback gun wracking the slide is pretty difficult.
Too bad the cheap steel-cased Russian ammo is all gone. I still have a tiny bit of Silver bear left. There is still the Polish Mesko ammo that they export to the civilian market in the US and it can be found online for around $18/50. It is great brass-cased clean mak ammo. That's what I feed my Polish P64s now which is nice because it is exactly what it was manufactured to be used in.p

As you say, it is a AK of pistols; it is rock solid reliable, easy to shoot and accurate. Changed the grip that allows me to drop the mag with a thumb lever. Using HP ammo, at 28 ounces, it is my every day carry gun. In the old days, there were lots of Russian training videos that showed variable training tip. Better than a Walther PP types, a good solid steel hard use pistol by design. Buy practice ammo by the 500 rds+ but only take what you want to shoot to the range. It goes fast and fun.
Very solid video on the Makarov. I was thinking about getting either a Makarov or a CZ series pistol. I wound up with something entirely different, but that's how things tend to work out. Oddly enough, I've seen some Makarov and Tokarev ammo at my local big box store when they got really, really low on ammo.
While the CZ-82 is mechanically different, and is double stacked, yet from outside looks the same. I would say it is a better gun than the Makarov. Shoots softer, and is more comfortable in the palm. In regards to the grip, FAB Defense and some others have upgraded grips that give you the ability to release the mag, like a modern pistol, at the top near the thumb.
Why not? Honestly the only thing that’s truly meh about the Makarov is the heel release, but even that isn’t that big of a deal because most gunfights are over in 6-8 rounds, and many slim modern compacts have similar capacity. People who say the Makarov is bad for CC always just say some variation of “nuh-UH…!” You could do better, but “not good” just isn’t true.
The Makarov is a cool piece of history and it is also a knock-off design based on the Walther PP. I've owned a couple but currently am without. I learned many years ago from an article in Hand loading Digest about how to trim 9x19 brass down to .700 and make 9x18 rounds with a .312 bullet. As long as the case mouth is sized correctly and proper bullets are used-the cut down 9x19 brass will fire form to chamber dimensions and be perfectly safe and very reloadable. This is what ive been running through my Mak for years and quite accurate. Cast your own .312 bullets and you never need worry about having 9x18mm. People who say Maks are unreliable dont know what they're talking about, its a very good choice for CCW when wearing light clothing. I hate the Bakelight grip though, made my own walnut grips
Back in the day these were cheap to buy at $200, parts and magazines were cheap at $8 each, and ammo was cheap at 9 cents. Now these are $600, mags are $35, and ammo is expensive. I sold all mine.....nice gun but no reason to have one today.
Modern gun companies can learn a lot from the design of these. Simple and safe to carry. Too many guns designed for concealed carry are not very safe. Often having no manual safety. These things decock and lock up tight when the safety is on. Then when you do flip it off the first trigger pull is heavy. That is perfect for a carry gun. It wont go off because it was hit at just the wrong angle or part of your jacket worked its way into the holster or whatever nonsense can happen.
The reason most carry pistols don't have manual safeties is that people simply don't want them. They want to be able to draw and pull the trigger, with nothing to stop the pistol from firing. As long as you're using a decent quality and correctly-fitted holster, you really don't need a manual safety on a pistol.
@@plaid13 There's nothing unsafe about carrying a pistol without a manual safety. Keep it in a holster and keep your finger off the trigger when it's out, and you'll be fine. That has become the norm for a reason.

I paid $ 150.00 when they first started to come into the country. I have the East German model it is supposedly the highest quality.
I prefer the more refined Polish P64 that kept closer to the ancestral PPK design and actually improved upon it with the trigger disconnector on the safety, a larger more clog-resistant extractor, and better case support around the chamber with the lugs on the slide that close up the feed ramp better when in battery. The last was necessary with the hotter 9x18mm mak cartridge.
Fun fact: this was originaly supposed to be a KGB, MVD and other counter-intelligence/espionage agencies servise pistol, hence the overall size, compact conceal design and magazine size. But it turned out to be so good that DoD desided well okay let's make them for every other branches to use.
Thats not the reason Tokarev was unsafe. Tokarev had no safe way to be carried with a round inside. This caused accidental discharges often. Come on man, do some research.
As a young soldier stationed in Germany back during the Cold War era I thought I would love to get a makarov as a souvenir if a war broke out 😉 Now I have an East German makarov my father gave me that he bought in the 90’s. It is so obvious a copy of the German PPK series.
In those days makarov is very good self-defence civilian pistol, easy to manipulate good type of ammo, if you can train your aim with this minimal scope system, the modern pistols will be toys. I like this kind of scope system and aiming, simple effective and classic even in rifles or shotguns, if you can train with them as citizens, will be able to defend our lives.

4:50 sir, that grip is inappropriate for some ages to look at once you see it.....
That's a nice leather jacket.
Makarov, when one needs to improve their Russian accent!
Haha 😆
You look like negan
It works !
Cuban Police carry the Mak
Interesting!
Where can you get one?
Atlantic Firearms had some recently
They're nice guns but it's like the nagant revolver. It's hard to find one that doesn't have the barrel shot out through decades of service.
Got an imez in 380 and my edc.
Nice!
It's my truck gun.
The Makarov was a design stolen by the Soviet Union. It is a direct copy of the German Walther PP pistol.
The round, too
First!
😎✌️
Poor BLACK MAN GUN😊
