1. Simplicity-that was one of the conditions Red Army imposed on all guns for the army. In this sense, PM is a 100% of this goal achieved: 28 parts. 2. If you truly love makarovs, show how they can be easily disassembled completely with only a cleaning rod. This is taught in Russian police schools. 3. PM was indeed the first gun in space, since Gagarin in 1961 had it hidden somewhere among the rest of the luggage, with the only exception: they put this gun not to fight aliens, but to fight wild animals after landing. How would it be practical-perhaps not much, at least shooting could be heard from some distance. 4. When Soviet army adopted ПМ as a standard sidearm, Makarov himself was testing something on the range. When the news reached him, he found the biggest paddle on the shooting range, and jumped into it-that’s how happy he was. 5. Heavy trigger is another safety, just in case. 6. Makarov wasn’t only a firearm designer. His wife came to him one day, and said “Kolya, I want to pickle some cucumbers, but the lid doesn’t seal well. Can you do something to it?” Makarov designed a tool that goes over the metal lid of the jar and equally bends the edges, sealing it.

It makes me kind of sad. I wanted one cause it’s like a Walther with Soviet aesthetics and cheap as a heck, but, now, I’ll have to probably just settle for a Tokarev if I want to get my USSR handgun fix for a simple price...

What I find fascinating about the Makarov aside from what was mentioned is that the Mak only has 27 parts, which is even fewer than a Glock. A lot of its internal parts serves dual purpose such as: Mainspring is magazine release spring, safety/decocker also retains the firing pin, slide stop is also the ejector, sear spring is also slide stop spring.

Love the Makarov! I bought one in the early 90's, a Baikal, later sold it against my better judgement. Bought a second one in the late 90's. Both were Russian models with the adjustable rear sights and both in .380 acp with single stack mags. Replaced the stock grip with a Pearce grip. Accuracy is unbelievable. Always felt safe when carrying these because of their reliability and accuracy. Shot the standard PPC and Q qualification courses with it and never had a problem qualifying. Yes, the .380 round is not as good or powerful, but accurate shot placement can make up for this. The simplicity of this firearm is the real star. The "KISS" principle is embodied by the Makarov. Because of this video and brandon's earlier video about why he edc's a makarov, I was talking with my buddy a lot about makarovs right around the time he turned 21. He ended up getting a really cool example of one for his first personally bought gun, and from the moment I shot my first round out of it I knew that I wanted one for myself. They're such cool little guns

Love this gun I bought a Makarov when I was 21. It was my first firearm. Loved it . Also bought a Tokarov as well. Loved that one so much I bought 2. And the last piece of my loves was my 38 special Burgo. With This thing I could shoot clay pigeons after they were launched. And the Tokorav split a bowling ball. And the piece that blew of you could see the waves in the material and you could put the broken piece right back on it snugly. Crazy.
Im not really a pistol guy, but my friend is a gun collector and we put around 1500 rounds down range one day , with about 18 different pistols. And with my almost zero knowledge of pistols i enjoyed shooting the makarov the most, and for me i was the most accurate with it. And that was comparing it to pistols that literally cost 10+ times more money. So this was interesting to watch, thanks.
Like most com bloc guns, it will give itself a trigger job with use. I discovered a couple cool things from long dead websites back when I owned my Makarov. If your trigger pull is gritty, shooting it will help but you can get some valve grinding paste (which is really just fine lapping compound) and smear some on the sear engagement surfaces. Wherever trigger parts rub, smear a little on and go shooting or dry fire (use a snap cap with a Makarov) to work the parts together. When you're done, clean the gun and get the lapping compound off. You can apply some anti-seize compound to the parts you lapped to get long term lubrication between the metal surfaces (cheap copper grade is fine) or you can have another go with more lapping compound if you like. Point is you can clean up the trigger quite a bit for about $10 at your local auto part store. You may need to sell a kidney for ammo though. I don't see any reason why the Makarov is a bad choice other than the weight. Sure they are chonks compared to a Glock 26, but I'm a big boy and I can conceal it just fine. Buy a good belt. 9x18 is more than adequate for most scenarios a civilian would find themselves in. If you're undergunned with a Makarov, you should have brought your rifle.
I’ve carried one for a few years. It’s my favorite handgun and I bought a russian grip that adds a thumb release on the magazine. It’s accurate, safe, and so much fun to shoot.
Russian Space Federation circa 1950's "Sir, this is our first manned flight in to space" "Yis Comrade, give pilot gun." "But sir, we could use the weight for supplies like food or water." "Nyet. Pilot fine, bring gun." "But sir, why?" "Americans land on moon. Send Russian Peace Offering." "Sir these are loaded magazines." "Exactly, send gun."
Fun Fact: Putin hated this pistol, saying that the cartridge had less penetration and power than a 7.62x25, that the gun felt less natural in his hand than a tokarev, and that it was hard to get out of the pocket. :D
I would agree. It's a pee-shooter. The Makarov, Walther PPK...... anything that looks like something a woman would fumble around in her purse for to try to stop a date-rape..... Ew. Now, if I was to own a Russian semi-auto pistol, I'd want a Gsh-18. That thing is sweet, and it can shoot high-pressure rounds, like the special armor piercing 9x19 them Russians offer!
My very first handgun was a double stack Russian Makarov (IJ70-18AH). I still own and shoot it today. I even found an extra mag for it in a box of random $5 stuff at a local gun store.
Dude I've been watching your channel for a while and I really liked your content, also I've been looking forward for an old school Makarov video. When you said that your Makarov is from Bulgaria I wasn't surprised at all! Bulgaria is the second biggest manufacturer of Russian firearms in the world, in fact your pistol most likely was manufactured in the military factory Arsenal which is located in the city of Kazanlak in Bulgaria. The exciting part for me is that Kazanlak is my home town. I was really thrilled to even hear you saying Bulgaria, due to the fact our country is pretty small. Anyways thank you for mentioning my country haha it was really cool video bro.
Brandon you should make a playlist of all your “how guns work” type videos. I love guns but my knowledge of how they work is essentially “trigger make metal stick poke primer and go boom and boom make new round come up”

Brandon:*tapes knife to stump* Me:"Yeah okay, he's having fun with it, that's nice" Brandon:*tapes a mallet to stump* Me:"This is getting slightly ridiculous" *Video ends* Me:"Wait? What?! He didn't tape the Makarov to his stump? DISAPPOINTED!"
"If it doesn't work, hit it again." I'd laugh if it wasn't how you fix a lot of Russian stuff. My uncle has an UAZ 452 and the best way to fix a starter in it is to smack it a few times with a hammer. You give it a few taps and it'll work for another two days.
Well don't want to kill your nice story but actually.... you could fix every older starter in a car with a good hit. Has nothing to do with superior russin tech ^^
After TH-cam played this as I had it randomly on in the background....Just wanted to say thank you. This video made me go out and buy one. It instantly became my favorite handgun. Is ammo Hard to find, yes. Is it heavy, yes. Do my friends say if I every have to use it in a defensive encounter, I will go straight to a black-site, yes. But I like it. I like it a lot.
Brandon: I'm going to beat you with knowledge. Me: Ahhhh just like my childho- Brandon: Just like Dad used to do after getting drunk. Me: *I see you are a man of culture as well*
Bought a blown up .380 Mak. Two rounds lodged in barrel bulge locking the slide in place in two spots in the rear position. Lots of drilling fileing hack saw new barrel barrel press and barrel pin gun works great! Added a Fab Defense magazine release grip and 6 mags this gun is now a modern weapon.
Hey Brandon, you wanna know why barrel is completely stationary? Lock slide back. You'll see that a bit of empty space between barrel and frame. Now take a regular glass bottle of beer (unopened), put the cap into that space and well now you found standard issue MVD bottle opener... This is probably why I have hard time aiming my service pistol
The TP-82 (Russian: ТП-82) was a triple-barrelled Soviet pistol that was carried by cosmonauts on space missions. It was intended as a survival aid to be used after landings and before recovery in the Siberian wilderness.
Brandon, I stumbled across this and have to say, it’s 100% on point. I’ve had my 380 makarov since the 1990’s. Not a “boomer”, just a gen X. Took my mak, out of about 10 other choices, to qualify for my concealed permit. Out shot my buddy, we compete in idpa comps. He had an m&p 9 custom shop. I scored perfect, he missed 1 point. I’ve run thousands of rounds through it and I’ve never had an FTF or FTE with it. If I didn’t carry my .45, because they don’t make a .46, the mak would be my every day carry with the black talons I have for it. Great review!
The most suddle hitler joke I’ve heard hahaha I laughed my ass off. «One of those rejected art students totally forgotten by history» *looks confused for 2 sec*
Have 2 Bulgarians. My wife's has a 19-lb spring, and mine's a 21. Both beat the heck out of the 17-lb stock spring in terms of not launching brass into the stratosphere. The additional spring 'weight' also makes them more reliable over the long haul, as it's keeping the slide from slamming into the stop quite as hard as it would. Never had a failure with it, even pulling it out of the mud pit. Just shook it out and fired. It's actually one of the more accurate pieces I have. Due to its weight, it's not a great carry gun. But, the wife likes it for a headboard gun, and I quite like taking mine to the range.
Picked up my Makarov about 25 years ago. Amazing little gun. I actually have the .380 w/adjustable sights. Accurate and reliable; not a single jam in 25 years.
Gotta say while not a fan of 9x18 or 380 auto, the idea of a super simple blowback pistol is intriguing, and genuinely good looking. It occurred to me that if you took the Makarov and made the slide a little chunkier to withstand the extra energy of standard 9mm para, with a super cheap plastic frame, you could get a Hi Point that was theoretically not terrible.
In 1993 I bought a Baikal IJ-70 Makarov for $79.99. (You know, the package with the leather holster, cleaning rod, and two magazines). Also, I bought several cases of ammunition (2,160 rounds) for $59.99 each. Good times! That was my EDC for over 10 years. Much love for this little decocker. EDIT: This was my first hand gun :)
Mine too. I paid way more than that (I think right around $250 in 2005ish), but it also came w/4 mags, holster, rod, and I think even a box or so of ammo. I SHOULD'VE bought way more ammo back in the day, but I didn't really have the expendable money.

@daAnder71 sorry, in dick flex it :(
Im not really a pistol guy, but my friend is a gun collector and we put around 1500 rounds down range one day , with about 18 different pistols.

Just picked up a Makarov and I'm in love with this flawless little beauty!
Fun Fact: Putin hated this pistol, saying that the cartridge had less penetration and power than a 7.62x25,
that the gun felt less natural in his hand than a tokarev, and that it was hard to get out of the pocket. :D
Many Soviets said that too
*Russian Bot Confirmed*
I would agree. It's a pee-shooter. The Makarov, Walther PPK...... anything that looks like something a woman would fumble around in her purse for to try to stop a date-rape..... Ew. Now, if I was to own a Russian semi-auto pistol, I'd want a Gsh-18. That thing is sweet, and it can shoot high-pressure rounds, like the special armor piercing 9x19 them Russians offer!
So he was surprised that the 9 mm didn't penetrate as much as a 7.62... was he also surprised that fire is hot and snow is cold?
@@benjaminraskin8509 he wasn't surprised, just hated the fact that it's chambered in ammunition which isnt highly penetrative

I love guns but my knowledge of how they work is essentially “trigger make metal stick poke primer and go boom and boom make new round come up”
I had no intention or need to buy a makarov but now I really really want on. That is such a cool design.

The TP-82 (Russian: ТП-82) was a triple-barrelled Soviet pistol that was carried by cosmonauts on space missions. It was intended as a survival aid to be used after landings and before recovery in the Siberian wilderness.
Brandon “unfortunately I am a terrible shot”
Ohhh so that’s why he likes aks
he has something to blame it on.

On today’s episode of practical carry guns

In Russia, we kill political prisoners by hands, and Makarov is only for aliens
