Great video! You're 100% correct. I converted my KTM 500 4 months ago and I'm obsessed. The most fun on 2 wheels to date. Yes I've broken both arms and some ribs learning stoppies and yes I'm in the process of recovering from some pretty bad road rash from a wheelie gone wrong at the moment. I'm 45 years old, sitting here like a little kid watching your video, just counting the days before I can get back out there and start ripping again.
I know makes us feel like kids and nothing you can do about it Like when the wife says " Be careful " Im thinking " Thank god she doesnt know what Im riding "
Yooooo…43yr old riding a street legal ‘04 YZ450F Supermoto conversion outta HOU,TX! I’ve owned the bike for ~6yrs and it’s a blast to ride. Bought the bike in motocross form. I did the entire supermoto conversion myself. After the bike passed state inspection I had to surrender my OFF ROAD USE ONLY title to the DMV for an ON ROAD USE title. Took about two or three weeks for the ON ROAD title and registration to come in the mail; that was a glorious day! Been nothing but smiles since 😊😊😊 Love the vid! Keep’em coming!
This video touched my soul... especially with my being a 30+ year, 41 year old washed up motocross racer who just purchased a works edition CRF450R and all the goodies to convert 👊🏻✊🏻
I started riding 2 yrs ago best decision I ever made. Still kinda pissed I waited so long but anyways. I had a grom and Harleys and just recently built a supermoto. It is by far and away the best I've come across so far. The supermoto gives u the best of everything. Handling, Power, speed, weight, off road capability the list is endless. The supermoto is my bike of choice by far. It is so much fun it should be illegal lol. I built mine myself, I converted a 2011 husaberg 450fe. I'd recommend a supermoto everyday allday over any harley. They are just so much fun it's ridiculous. The attention it gets is crazy as well. If you don't want alot of attention do not get a sumo. Good vid and you some it up pretty well. Being a new rider I had no idea what I'd be into. I do love the Harleys but man the supermoto is just too much fun.
@@savage22bolt32 Amen - been riding since I was about 5, got my own first bike at 10, and had bikes, 3 wheelers, 4 wheelers and snowmobiles ever since!! Just turned 50 a couple of months ago and I am looking to buy another GSX-R 1000(put 54kmi on my last one in the 5yrs I owned it!!), BUT, I REALLY want something like these bikes so I can stunt the living crap out of it!!!! 🙏🙏😁😁
So back in 1981 I laced up a set of rims so I could use my RM465 as a supermoto 😁 ran it in every class at every form of racing there was. These days I have a Hypermotard, agree that they're a bit heavy, these days, so am I. I prefer the riding position and extra suspension means that punting around the B & C roads is still an absolute hoot, and while I'm not as game as I was in my youth, I still get a buzz out of the odd jump, frequent wheelies and a bit of slipping and sliding, while still able to run transport stages in comfort 😁 I understand the buzz, getting old sucks 😎
This video hits home. Just built/registered a 2015 FC450 last year. Best decision ever made. Ride every day. Better than any other street option I've ever touched. Brought me out of a really rough time in life.
Road out of the dealers shop with a new KTM 690 SMC R 6 days ago. Got my licence and first motorcycle 57 years ago and now have my first supermoto. So here is a 74 year old male riding a bike considered by most to only suit a 20 something male. I know I will love it.
My favorite was a Husqvarna 510SMR when they were made in Italy 2008, it was a beast and spent more time on the back wheel than any other bike I've owned. I'm converting a YZ450F now, so I'll see how it does in comparison.
I owned a Husaberg FS570 for 4 years and it was awesome! 60hp, 270 lbs all up and +5 rear sporcket. I got the biggest ticket of my life on that bike. Love SM bikes!!
Yup...just raced a 10km pro open class uphill race on fast uphill asphalt. 10 classes and supermotos had the 2 fastest overall times. RM450z and me on a Husq 701 SM 4 seconds behind in the open pro class!
Great video! After outgrowing my first off road bike, a WR250R it was converted to a motard. Other than the lack of power I absolutely love the bike. Compared to my ZX6R and my Harley, the WR feels so light and nimble it's intimidating. I'll probably buy/build another based on a KTM 500 EXC-F to get the power I desire. Regarding the reason we don't see more motards on the road may have to do with comfort and practicality. While my WR with a Seat Concepts aftermarket seat is very comfortable, my KTM 250 is not. Most competition level dirtbikes come with narrow seats which are not the greatest on the butt. Plus, most people want the power and torque for commuting. Big bikes tend to have more torque and wider gear ratios which means less shifting light to light. Simply put, motards are fun toys but not great for commuting practically.
My CR500 SUMO is just a novelty, but it's great to just take it out occasionally. I like riding it to the Honda dealer to pick up some oil, and half the staff comes out to the parking lot to check it out too. 😆
Dude get a Like 02-03 WR 426. Absolute TORQUE monsters. I could wheelie my 426 in EVERY gear it was Stupid lol and they are basically the same size as a 250
I agree with you 100℅! Supermoto Has allways been my passion!! I owned a Yamaha DTR 125 with sm tires and it was awesome!!! But you're forgetting one crazy hell machine, the one that I own nowadays. The Aprilia SXV 550... OH MY GOD!!!! I can't get enough off that!! It is so powerfull, so adictive!! Anyways nice vídeo! Keep it Up!
The absolute best super moto is a 2 stroke motocross bike converted to street legal with led lights and all that. I seen a CR500 super moto that was insane .
@@BornAGoon I don't think there is such a thing as production street legal 2 stroke 500. Most I seen are put together from different parts, an engine here, frame there...
The big manufacturers don't want to lose the sales of their big conventional street bikes and they know the supermoto platforms are going to kill the market for the more profitable sleds they all offer. This is the same reason the big four never really got behind the sport to begin with in the early 80s.
I spent five years massaging my KTM 690 SMC into something very special. Now it's 29 pounds lighter and pulls peak torque another 500 RPM higher. It's a terror on mountain roads and matches acceleration with most sportbikes up to 60 mph ;-)
yeeeeessss supermoto gang! a lot of people ask why you want to ride supermoto when sport bikes are faster and the simple answer is that supermotos are the most playful bike. you can do litterally anything on them, slide them, wheelie, stoppie, anything inbetween, they are simple, cheap, very durable (since they are a dirtbike) and although they might not be the fastest around the track they are still not far behind other bikes and they have they make up for that in all of the other amazing benefits they have.
I've also owned and ridden most types of bikes and my faves are the SUMOS as well. They are extremely fun, but in a limited scope. If you live in a city or an area with lots of twisty b roads, fire roads and the sort they are the best you can have. However, if your riding buddies mostly go on long rides or they are all about speed, or you have considerable highway commute, it gets boring. That coupled with the fact, that in general supermotos are quite uncomfortable, most don't even support a pillion rider, also contributes to the lack of recognition and perceived utility. Not to mention, they are not burned into the public image like cruisers, sportbikes or advs are. If you ask someone who is not into motorcycling what a supermoto is, they will give you a blank stare, but ask them what a sportbike is and at least they can outline the concept. Also i think a lot of riders or wanna-be-riders disregard supermotos as they are tall (intimidating for some beginners), and most of them require lot of maintenance (the proper built sumos running high sprung 250-450 engines requiring maintenance according to hours not mileage). But i - personally - love them!
Yup. I live at the base of a mountain that's a little over 20 miles to the top. My KTM 690 SMC is the perfect bike for going up and down the hill. Not so great for most other types of riding...
Nice video! A bit harsh on the Zero though, i took one for a test ride earlier this year. As someone more used to R1s, Gixxers, Fazers and more recently odd touring bikes like the Niken 3 wheeler, i felt that the zero power felt like a 600cc middleweight up-to around 80mph yet as light as a 125! So chuckable! But i nearly dropped it leaning too far into a corner because of fresh tires! I was live streaming at the time, perhaps ill post the link of my ride/review. The zero is a capable machine and cheap to run.
Regarding your comments, I reckon you’d get maybe 2 hours continuous ride from the Zero assuming you weren’t flooring it everywhere. Then 40 minutes to charge, which isn’t bad. Given our infrastructure in the UK you do need to plan your journeys a bit more careful than a traditional petrol bike. In short, I think the Zero is great *second* bike assuming you have the infrastructure.
Zero FXs owner here with recorded owner experience After the first month of riding, I knew it wasnt a real supermoto. But in fact in its own insane class of fun. Take a normal supermoto, give it TOO MUCH torque, and no maintence. Its a hard bike to sell, even though i dont ride it. If i want to smile, i rip it down my street, no one is bothered, my thrills are satisfied. In terms of supermoto, the Zero FXS misses a lot of marks i miss. Shifting, super light, the NOISE!!!, suspension, etc. Zero Fxs is not a true sumo
I owned a 'supermoto'. My starterbike was an aprilia sx125. Disregarding the lack of power, it was super unconfy on longer travels. I was taking to guys who owned other supermotos and they all seemed to agree. They are tremendous fun though, so i'll be buying one with proper power again one day.
@@goon_eg1089 not really, mine is a 4 stroke. Do you have a good reason to choose for a 2 stroke? There are quite a few more downsides and limitations to them. Unless you're bound to 125cc and absolutely need that bit more power, I'd go for a 4 stroke.
I commute on crf230 converted to supermoto. Always gives me a big smile. Those that don't know the sm joy ask stupid questions like "isn't that a kids bike?". I truly feel sorry for them.
I owned a Dorsoduro 750. Yes, it was relatively heavy and perhaps a bit underpowered, but it was the best motorcycle that I ever owned! Everytime I got on it, I grinned. What ever I wanted to do, it would do with panache. Want to go fire roading? Sure, just don't hit any huge bumps! Want to go touring?. Sure, put a Rotopax on the back and go. Want to play at Supermotard? Sure, I can do that! The bike was serene in every situation, never did anything untoward. And the engine was just amazing. I went down one tooth on the countershaft sprocket and that made it very happy putting around town. I calculated it would do 126 mph in 6th at 10,500 rpm. Oh, come on, it will never pull that in 6th! Yes, it did. The bike was utterly amazing.
Yes, you are absolutely right Easy to work on… But, need a lot more maintenance I ride 4-5 times a week So I can say without a doubt- a lot more maintenance It’s cool, but it’s work
i have an even more novel and insane idea... super moto is basically street tires on a dirt bike... cos its lighter.. BUT.... what if we slap a twin cyl light weight old style air cooled 2 stroke on a 90lb mini bike frame, give it rear suspension, off road bars, street tires, amd foot placement for both cruising, and off roading.. im talkin a floor board on each side with rear brake up forward, or at the heel on both sides of the floor board, and a shifter thats actually on the bars style trigger shifter, where left hand goes up gears, and right hamd goes down them, or visa versa. either way.. im gonna do it, build me a nasty little 150lb mini super cruiser. she gotta be able to wheelie, stoppy, burn out, go above 80 to 90mph last gear wide open, and be able to comfortably stand on the foot wells and take off road, and jump jumps similarly to a dirt bike, but shaped like, and rides seated like a cruiser, slung slightly lower to the ground than a dirt bike, for us short dudes. and set up to be easy to fix with mostly off shelf parts you can get at a bike shop, hardware store, and the engine parts/frame from other similar motorcycle/mini bike parts suppliers with a minimum of hand made or custom fabricated parts of any kind. gonna do it, dunno if imma record it tho.
Your words “instead of a shrink” made me an instant fan. Keep up the good work. & be safe out there. Appreciate your wit. It’s a delight on an otherwise shyt day.
I've got a ccm R30 644 had it years and would never ever sell it Other bikes have come and gone but the ccm is just 2 much fun it's got a special place in my heart
Freak'n awesome! Watching this gets my blood racing and gives me great memories back in 1976 when I had a Honda XL250 me and a couple buddies would wheelie all day long, I could ride a wheelie for as long as I wanted turning, upshifting, downshifting, of course your the master now, but back in the day, I was the master of wheelies! Haha
You pretty much hit it right on the head about AMA Supermoto. It had a good run for about 4 years, but they never knew how to build it. Rather than start it with a set of regional series and championships, they went right to the national championship with not much of a real sponsorship or TV package. It was fun and I lost a ton of money racing that year, but I could see the writing on the wall. What is considered the championship right now is a 4 race series out West. So sad because these are so much fun. I'm converting my KTM525 to street legal because there is nowhere close to race, so we'll go hit up the parking lots and backroads around here. Nice video, by the way! Would love to see that 450RL in motard gear!
I raced a few of those series at Cal Speedway, the del mar fairgrounds, and Primm. There were some big names on the gate like Jeff Ward, Doug Henry and Ben Bostrom but only 20 people in the stands which were just family members lol
I had a Gilera Nordwest in the days and it was fun, but a pain when I had to travel, even not so long distances like 600 km. Anyway, it was Italian and not very reliable, so I got a more reasonable bike. Now I had to buy an auxiliary bike, as my cruiser is a Victory Vision which is difficult to maintain due to Polaris dropping the brand. So I got a second-hand Duke 690, planning to use it around town, in short trips and so on. But it was so much fun and not really that bad for long trips that I ended using it for everything, even going to rock festivals more than 2000 kilometres away on it. Of course, I cannot do the Iron Butt runs of 2100 km in 18 hours straight that I did on the Vision - anything over 1000 km straight becomes really painful - so I have to do more stops and the Duke does not draw all the looks as the Vision, but it can carry almost as much and uses even less gas. It's not a true super-motard, but it's the closest while still being usable for many more things. More important, at 70, it has rejuvenated me half a century... 😛
My first real road bike is a KTM exc 125 '05, even though its an older one the thing is mad fast and light. For a1 the most fun you can have. Only real problem for me has been is that because its a bit older things needed replacing (not engine things), beside that people say its not great for long trips... well its just not made for comfort 🤷♂️
It’s America. That’s why the Series never took off. It didn’t make it in the early 80’s “the Superbikers” I think it was called. You got to watch Wayne Rainey, Eddie Lawson, Magoo to name a few of the greats of the time and on a non cable channel. During prime time. Ioved it! The dirt and pavement mix was a great idea. But, America just offers to many other things to pull you away. The fan base was very limited then, just like now. Wish it took off. Great vid and glad your into it. Ride on!
Great video and I wish more people road sumos as they are the most fun! Riding with a group or couple people with sumos is way more fun then any other motorcycling in my opinion. Owners multiple sport bikes, duals sports, and even a couple cruiser….still always go back to supermotos though as even by myself going “slow” I still smile every time I ride them. Rocking the 450l with sm wheels currently and I also enjoy spanking 200hp liter bikes in the turns under 90mph lol
I am also surprised manufacturers don’t all have a fully street legal true sumo. They are so popular. It would be amazing to just go pick up one that fits exactly what I need without having to modify it and spending 3plus grand.
Great video.. Couldn't agree more.. In 1980 I bought a 440 Maico brand new and had them fit lights and road tyres and small back sprocket.. It was rediculous..! :D Even put back pegs on it and took my girlfriend (she was thin and small) for fun rides.. She loved it too! The bike hardly ever saw any dirt.. On race days I'd take it to the track and park this gleaming red and gold god next to the Maico team from the shop.. happy for free promotion! Like you, I wondered why I was the only one..?
I bought a sumo wr450 and can confirm it healed my depression. There was that month that it was blown up that it came back but I rebuilt it and bam: no more depression again
Couldn't agree more! I come from Greece, a small country with bad roads in the cities, and plentyful curvy roads in the countryside I own a 690sm 2007 with an added wind protection so that when highway is needed, 140-150km is ok I avoid highways of course and the rest of the country is my playground, the more twisty the better In addition, I have some enduro experience as a kid, thus I can take my sm to almost any deserted beach in the summer months, I just stand up and make my knees part of suspention I use pirelli mt 60, they work amazingly on the road, both dry and wet, and also on dirt they're decent Cheers from Athens, Greece friend Have good health and tones of fun : ))
I've had a few KTM smc690's over the years but wouldn't ever buy one again, the main issues is the thieves that'll take your garage doors off to rob it (my first one lasted 2 weeks, my 2nd one lasted 3 months, my 3rd one got totaled by someone pulling out of a junction on me after owning for a couple of years), but if you're fortunate enough to keep hold of it for long enough, you quickly wish you had more power (especially top end) and your limited to how far you travel really because they're not the most comfortable bikes to ride! They're great for a bit of fun round the karting tracks tho and eat speed bumps and pot holes at 90 no problem! ✌️
Bro, I've now had 2 free practice noghts for supermotards... And its f$ing amazing... First time racing sumo, had a blast, went down trice but laughed all the way through. 2 days ago had my second free practice, suit repaired and ready for action, i went, had a blast and even started understanding sumo slides... My gawd, supermoto is AMAZING
Good stuff, us hooligans are under represented it seems. My first street bike was a 2007 Husqvarna SM510R, it has lived a good life and is now my first track bike. I will never sell the old girl, it will always be able to be fixed, even if parts are getting harder to find. Next is a 530 kit, hopefully ToxicMoto is still offering them when I want it done. Keep up the good work, looking forward to more content.
He’s right about how fun they are! As long as ur headed around the corner. I’ve got a Ktm 690 Duke. I LOVE going anywhere in my neighborhood. But if I need to get on a freeway to get where I’m going. . . . . . I hate it. It’s like riding a sewing machine. I wouldn’t own it if it wasn’t my second or even my third bike. Super Moto = Super Fun around town, city streets, even just around parking lots! But terrible on a freeway. That’s why not so many on the roadways.
Thanks for this video, it means I didn't made a mistake converting my bike into a supermoto configuration. Well, it's just a Yamaha XT225, but then, it's a lot of fun to ride.
I love riding all different motorcycles. They all are a different experience and they are amazing. That being said supermotos are my favorite. I’m converting my 17 crf450r with only 35hrs on it to a sumo over the winter. I plan on keeping that bike as a street legal sumo I can ride to work or around town and I’m going to buy a brand new dirt bike for the track and trails.
I like what you're saying I have grown into a dual sport guy late in my life after injuries and love it i still have dirt in my blood so not super moto yet but I know where you're coming from
A couple of things from watching your video. As a former 200hp plus super sport rider a super motard will never feel as powerful, they lack the constant linear power delivery that can take you to 200mph. By dropping the hypermotard because of ‘weight’ you fail to acknowledge that most of the ‘weight’ we feel is centrifugal force from the wheels and having switched from super sports to hypermotard I can tell you that the last thing on my mind was any weight changes. As others have commented, motards in general make you want to wheelie and generally hoon it. The law doesn’t like that. Now I own a HD breakout for the street and a CRF450R for the track. It’s the safest compromise. If there were advantages to ride motards (lane splitting to name just one) and more tracks, more people would ride them.
Its all a compromise and a view point Sure SMs are not supersport fast but supersprts are only good on tracks they are a bitch on roads thats why people choose nakeds Its also not so much centrifugal force as weight bias and how a bike responds to that weight Many people can not afford to own 2 bikes and need a solid all arounder Thats what makes sumos attractive.
Hell, I am in my 50's and I want one. Seems like the 450s and 500s are where it is at, not to mention I am to big for something smaller (6'5" tall). I love motorcycling because of the freedom and I have had many different types of bikes, but supermoto seems like the free~est of the free. I like the saying, "It is better to ride a slow motorcycle fast than a fast motorcycle slow." There is a lot of truth in that. Considering driving around town a lot this seems like a lot more fun than riding a Gixxer at speed limitish speeds. Definitely on my bucket list.
i have two dirtbikes and a supermoto i love doing wheelies and my fav sm youtubers are ntk life and querly. if you are planing to get into supermoto i sugest watching some of their videos. it is what got me into it. i have tried sports bikes and touring bikes in the past but for me personaly supermoto is the most fun bikes you can buy and work on, i just love it. great video, i hope more people will get into the sm scene.
I just got ahold of a really nice KLX250 for dirt cheap ($2000, less than 5000 miles). Yeah it's not as fast as my 04 CR250 2 stroke was (or any of the countless other dirt bikes I've had over the years), or the 2 R6s I've owned but I've really been enjoying riding it. Since I got it so cheap, I'm gonna go ahead and do a sumo conversion on it & get the Bill Blue 351 big bore kit for it. Great video btw man! Sumos are badass!
Let me brake it down, 1 > when people see maintained needs to be done in hours they run for the hills, 2 > when people see they will struggle to hit highway seeps they run , 3 > all the super fun handling makes them "unstable" at any speed. 4 > Reliability have you owned a KTM single they are reliable as a crack addict. 5 > The single in the KTM 690 makes Harleys seem refined and smooth.
A few points about supermoto bikes: 1. For a manufacturer, supermoto sales cut into sport bike sales, and with lower profit. 2. If you are on a pubic road having fun, you are almost certainly breaking the law. 3. Cruising on a supermoto is decidedly boring.
Rode with 3 friends the other day 2 had breakouts the other had road bike , I beat all three on the twisties on a wr450 motard and while they went home on the tarmac i went the long way home and rode firetrails back. Best of both worlds...
As a kid with my dirt bikes I often thought of terrorizing the streets but the fear of dad taking my bike away do to a cop/traffic ticket I kept my street actions to a minimum, now get it on
I think I invented them in the early 80s I fitted a smaller front wheel and road tyres to my Yamaha XT500 my mates thought I was mad until they rode it.
had a husqvarna 450 wr 2stroke in the late 70s enduro setup with lights and the dmv actually gave me a tag for it but i didn't push my luck/law on the street(no mirrors ,turn signals, knobby tires) just to get to the trails or off-road areas nearby but man what a blast handled great power slides, wheelies no prob hardest part was keeping the front wheel down loved pulling out on to the road and in about 3 seconds being right next to a car, doing 45 to 55, that u pulled out behind on the road freaked out a few then getting to a offroad area and shooting off the road thru a ditch great escape style ( except no fence crash) most fun on 2 wheels ever of all the motorcycles i've had, street and dirt , that's the one i miss the most traded it on a 79 sportster while in the marines cuz i needed more of a commuter/street bike these new ones , like u showed , get me really wanting to give it a go again
I wish supermoto races were more popular these days, I mean, the S1GP we got in Europe is quite disappointing. Regardless, what I really would like to see is other riders to at least have a go on a supermoto, and feel what is all about, what really means having fun riding a bike.
I put Warp 9 rims on my CRF450L... I have basically no intention of ever putting the dirt wheels back on. It is too much fun in supermoto trim. The only downside over a sportbike is the maintenance intervals.
13 years xt 550 Yamaha. 150 kilos 38 hp. Lots of fun. Generally I think big bore is fun. Now with a dl1000 I'm fast but heavy. I can't go down the stairs from the castle of astypalaia to the port with a girl sitting on my fuel tank he he, like I did with my humble xt 550.
Same question with Jesus, people know he’s there , he’s full of love and happiness but just don’t believe it , until they take a chance , then realize all they have been missing!😜🙏🏼I’ve rode motorcycles sense I was 10 , out of all the bikes I’ve owned and raced my supermoto is the funnest! Puts a big smile on my face every time I jump on it .
Because they are not so great on the hwy for long trips. No wind screen makes for a tough open road hwy ride at 80-85 mph where the RPM is way up there.
Something you said at the beginning of the video about depression I really don't know what I would do without my vtr1000 I love this bike the way it delivers the power is amazing and handles exceptional bike dry is only 427 lb super light bike low center of gravity when I'm up in the hills playing I feel like I died and went to heaven it's Heaven on Earth having that type of power in between your legs brand new tires it's like riding on a roller coaster that you're in control of you that know no what I'm talking about.. don't know what I would do without motorcycles I really don't
Puts a smile on your face no matter what as long as you can operate a clutch😂 edit definitely the drop factor other than handle bars and levers its cheap.

I prefer the riding position and extra suspension means that punting around the B & C roads is still an absolute hoot, and while I'm not as game as I was in my youth, I still get a buzz out of the odd jump, frequent wheelies and a bit of slipping and sliding, while still able to run transport stages in comfort 😁
I understand the buzz, getting old sucks 😎
Sure does but hey we've managed some good times on the way! 1981 - the year I bought my Jota - which I still have with my LC 4.
This video hits home. Just built/registered a 2015 FC450 last year. Best decision ever made. Ride every day. Better than any other street option I've ever touched. Brought me out of a really rough time in life.
Sweet awesome story
Road out of the dealers shop with a new KTM 690 SMC R 6 days ago. Got my licence and first motorcycle 57 years ago and now have my first supermoto. So here is a 74 year old male riding a bike considered by most to only suit a 20 something male. I know I will love it.
If you are 74 and just bought a SM 690 you are my hero
Staying young, get the wheelie and stoppie down and you'll be everyone's hero! Keep her sunny side up!
My favorite was a Husqvarna 510SMR when they were made in Italy 2008, it was a beast and spent more time on the back wheel than any other bike I've owned. I'm converting a YZ450F now, so I'll see how it does in comparison.
nice let me know how it goes
I used to have a TE501 but the 05 model. No ignition key, a pedal bike speedo and buckets of torque
I owned a Husaberg FS570 for 4 years and it was awesome! 60hp, 270 lbs all up and +5 rear sporcket. I got the biggest ticket of my life on that bike. Love SM bikes!!
Ive had them all, busa , cr 250 s , fz1 , gs 750 , rd 350, kawi ltd. Im 61, and right now, I have a Fat Bob and a KTM 1190r . LOVE THEM ALL !!!
Yup...just raced a 10km pro open class uphill race on fast uphill asphalt. 10 classes and supermotos had the 2 fastest overall times. RM450z and me on a Husq 701 SM 4 seconds behind in the open pro class!
you reignited my love for supermoto bikes.. thank you..
Glad to hear that
Great video!
Yea you have a point there Longer distant travel is not as desirable as other motorcycles
get yourself a yz250 2 stroke dude . put a 300cc cylinder good pipe then go for a boot you'll feel great . infact any 2 stroke gives you a high.
You can mod those WRs to run yz power easily. Get a 290 big bore aswell and they're stupid fun
I could wheelie my 426 in EVERY gear it was Stupid lol and they are basically the same size as a 250
You’re fuc**ng right. I start searching for one…🤷♂️🤦♂️
Time to get one
I agree with you 100℅! Supermoto Has allways been my passion!! I owned a Yamaha DTR 125 with sm tires and it was awesome!!! But you're forgetting one crazy hell machine, the one that I own nowadays. The Aprilia SXV 550... OH MY GOD!!!! I can't get enough off that!! It is so powerfull, so adictive!! Anyways nice vídeo! Keep it Up!
I like that Aprilia I will be doing more Sumo content in the near future
The absolute best super moto is a 2 stroke motocross bike converted to street legal with led lights and all that. I seen a CR500 super moto that was insane .
Can you get a CR 500 street legal A 500 would be hard to hold down lol
Yep best all around bike out there Cant beat themm
No, you're absolutely correct sir. I'd be liking me a Yamaha 426 myself.😊
From a live stream ride of the Zero…
th-cam.com/video/cW3IJJAB6PI/w-d-xo.html
Fun starts around 32 minutes in. I nearly drop it at 1:31!
Zero FXs owner here with recorded owner experience
After the first month of riding, I knew it wasnt a real supermoto.
"Riding a weapon", well said Sir, well said. '05 KTM 625 SCM here...pure love!
That is probably their biggest downfall is long trip usage
I'm about to buy a mx125 full power, any tips for riding a two stroke ?
@@goon_eg1089 not really, mine is a 4 stroke. Do you have a good reason to choose for a 2 stroke? There are quite a few more downsides and limitations to them. Unless you're bound to 125cc and absolutely need that bit more power, I'd go for a 4 stroke.
@@goon_eg1089 like wait for it to warm up properly, control your carburation and use good quality oil.
I own an husqvarna 125 2t here in italy
Such a great video. I had a 2003 450 crf450x I put warp 9 rims on it and was the most enjoyment i have ever had.!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching
They are the best! Great advice and we'll spoken. Your the man!!
I appreciate that!
Turning the street into dirt with tire choice. Nice.
Sho is
Yes, you are absolutely right
Easy to work on…
But, need a lot more maintenance
I ride 4-5 times a week
So I can say without a doubt- a lot more maintenance
It’s cool, but it’s work
Yea they need a little extra love
i have an even more novel and insane idea... super moto is basically street tires on a dirt bike... cos its lighter..
BUT.... what if we slap a twin cyl light weight old style air cooled 2 stroke on a 90lb mini bike frame, give it rear suspension, off road bars, street tires, amd foot placement for both cruising, and off roading.. im talkin a floor board on each side with rear brake up forward, or at the heel on both sides of the floor board, and a shifter thats actually on the bars style trigger shifter, where left hand goes up gears, and right hamd goes down them, or visa versa.
either way.. im gonna do it, build me a nasty little 150lb mini super cruiser.
she gotta be able to wheelie, stoppy, burn out, go above 80 to 90mph last gear wide open, and be able to comfortably stand on the foot wells and take off road, and jump jumps similarly to a dirt bike, but shaped like, and rides seated like a cruiser, slung slightly lower to the ground than a dirt bike, for us short dudes.
and set up to be easy to fix with mostly off shelf parts you can get at a bike shop, hardware store, and the engine parts/frame from other similar motorcycle/mini bike parts suppliers with a minimum of hand made or custom fabricated parts of any kind.
gonna do it, dunno if imma record it tho.
If you build that I will do a video on it
Your words “instead of a shrink” made me an instant fan.
Keep up the good work. & be safe out there.
Appreciate your wit. It’s a delight on an otherwise shyt day.
Thank you
I converted my xr650r a few years back and I still can't get over how much fun it is.
XR 650 is a beast
I've got a ccm R30 644 had it years and would never ever sell it
Other bikes have come and gone but the ccm is just 2 much fun it's got a special place in my heart
Thanks for watching
Freak'n awesome! Watching this gets my blood racing and gives me great memories back in 1976 when I had a Honda XL250 me and a couple buddies would wheelie all day long, I could ride a wheelie for as long as I wanted turning, upshifting, downshifting, of course your the master now, but back in the day, I was the master of wheelies! Haha
in the 80s we called them CHOOK CHASERS 🤣
Supermoto baby! ALL THE ADVENTURES OVER HERE!!! Street and trails😁😁😁
You know it!
Couldn't agree more just bought my third dr-z can't get enough
Appreciate you watching
I'm a shrink and I fully endorse your advice at 2:29.
I have KTM lc4 625 supermoto and i love it!!!
Ride on!
Very nice. A nod to Magoo Chandler from the 1982 Superbikers Race would have been cool.
This video is amazing. Congratulations for it!
Thank you very much!
This thing is on rails with SM tires
I am also surprised manufacturers don’t all have a fully street legal true sumo. They are so popular. It would be amazing to just go pick up one that fits exactly what I need without having to modify it and spending 3plus grand.
yea me too
Great video..
The fact that you owned a Maico makes you a legend
why no one rides super motos because after a few days you no longer have a valid licence
no truer words have been spoken
I bought a sumo wr450 and can confirm it healed my depression. There was that month that it was blown up that it came back but I rebuilt it and bam: no more depression again
Couldn't agree more!
I come from Greece, a small country with bad roads in the cities, and plentyful curvy roads in the countryside
I own a 690sm 2007 with an added wind protection so that when highway is needed, 140-150km is ok
I avoid highways of course and the rest of the country is my playground, the more twisty the better
In addition, I have some enduro experience as a kid, thus I can take my sm to almost any deserted beach in the summer months, I just stand up and make my knees part of suspention
I use pirelli mt 60, they work amazingly on the road, both dry and wet, and also on dirt they're decent
Cheers from Athens, Greece friend
Have good health and tones of fun : ))
I can understand that lol
Bro, I've now had 2 free practice noghts for supermotards... And its f$ing amazing... First time racing sumo, had a blast, went down trice but laughed all the way through. 2 days ago had my second free practice, suit repaired and ready for action, i went, had a blast and even started understanding sumo slides... My gawd, supermoto is AMAZING
Sure is best of luck with your races
I always liked the 2008 to 2011 duke 690
Thanks for this video, it means I didn't made a mistake converting my bike into a supermoto configuration. Well, it's just a Yamaha XT225, but then, it's a lot of fun to ride.
Sumos are never a mistake lol
More fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow!
Totally agreed.... owned a KTM Duke II 650cc. Hell lots of fun!!!!
Thanks for watching the video
Nice let me know how it goes
Let me brake it down, 1 > when people see maintained needs to be done in hours they run for the hills, 2 > when people see they will struggle to hit highway seeps they run , 3 > all the super fun handling makes them "unstable" at any speed. 4 > Reliability have you owned a KTM single they are reliable as a crack addict. 5 > The single in the KTM 690 makes Harleys seem refined and smooth.
People fear what they dont understand I raced and older KTM 450 in 2004 it was a good bike I blew the crank bearing but it wa my fault
100% spot on. I got a KTM 690 Enduro R. Put some WARP 9 17 inch orange anodized wheels on it and I’m in love. Best bike I’ve ever owned.
best one in the class thanks for watching
Spot on and well said mate. Cheers and enjoy
Thank you kindly
A few points about supermoto bikes:
1. For a manufacturer, supermoto sales cut into sport bike sales, and with lower profit.
2. If you are on a pubic road having fun, you are almost certainly breaking the law.
3. Cruising on a supermoto is decidedly boring.
Good points
Cruising period steals the fun 😂
Get a old KDX 200 an fix it up or a Yamaha DT125R I had most fun doing enduro going though woods an on old coal pits
Slate dumps too?

You are a dope supermoto rider
I think I invented them in the early 80s I fitted a smaller front wheel and road tyres to my Yamaha XT500 my mates thought I was mad until they rode it.
you had an XT 500 SM?
@@BornAGoon yes and later a Honda XL 500 which I did the same. Fun on country roads.
had a husqvarna 450 wr 2stroke in the late 70s enduro setup with lights and the dmv actually gave me a tag for it but i didn't push my luck/law on the street(no mirrors ,turn signals, knobby tires) just to get to the trails or off-road areas nearby but man what a blast handled great power slides, wheelies no prob hardest part was keeping the front wheel down loved pulling out on to the road and in about 3 seconds being right next to a car, doing 45 to 55, that u pulled out behind on the road freaked out a few then getting to a offroad area and shooting off the road thru a ditch great escape style ( except no fence crash) most fun on 2 wheels ever of all the motorcycles i've had, street and dirt , that's the one i miss the most traded it on a 79 sportster while in the marines cuz i needed more of a commuter/street bike these new ones , like u showed , get me really wanting to give it a go again
Sweet The 70s were dope
@@BornAGoon only problem most of them had the power but the suspension and frames weren't up to par yet like today
Come to Finland, Sweden etc. where there are twice as many supermotos than any other motorcycle. Oh and two stroke sumos, you left out two strokes.
yea Europe is keeping the Sumo scene alive I did mention 2 strokes in the video but I was focused more on street legal bikes in the US
Of course there are...YOU GUYS LOVE WRC RALLY CAR RACING TOO! Makes perfect sense to love sumoto over there!
I wish supermoto races were more popular these days, I mean, the S1GP we got in Europe is quite disappointing.
Regardless, what I really would like to see is other riders to at least have a go on a supermoto, and feel what is all about, what really means having fun riding a bike.
Me too Maybe if I can get enough interest on the channel, I will hold a race Like an urban style
0:52 what a beautiful art
Thank you
You tell it well with a good laugh thrown in. Supermotos are the all round fun bike ... yet you can take it to work 👍
Absolutely
I put Warp 9 rims on my CRF450L... I have basically no intention of ever putting the dirt wheels back on. It is too much fun in supermoto trim. The only downside over a sportbike is the maintenance intervals.
The DRZ400SM makes it easy to get into this sector of the sport
13 years xt 550 Yamaha. 150 kilos 38 hp. Lots of fun. Generally I think big bore is fun. Now with a dl1000 I'm fast but heavy. I can't go down the stairs from the castle of astypalaia to the port with a girl sitting on my fuel tank he he, like I did with my humble xt 550.

Because they are not so great on the hwy for long trips. No wind screen makes for a tough open road hwy ride at 80-85 mph where the RPM is way up there.
True but you forget about trips when you can raise so much hell lol
I love the adv Starbucks line
ADV is synonymous with Starbucks lol
@@BornAGoon I have Sxv 550
And RMZ 450 supermoto
I would like to sell my sxv550
In europe you have TM racing, SWM and AJP that sells street legal supermotos, with 500, 450 and 250cc single cylinder, that are true supermotos !
Europe is just a better SM scene
Why do u think the drz400 from suzuki sells so well ? Don't mess with perfection plus parts are very easy to find 👌. Same bike sold for 22years !
Great video. I'm 50, have three bikes: Adventure, bobber and classic Moto Guzzi cafe racer. If I got another one it would be a sumo 🤘🤘🤘
I think its time you add a sumo lol
Inspirational... I've never had much interest in these. Now I want to ride one.
You should!
Great video. Got my first supermoto this year and loving it more than any other type bike I’ve had.
Thanks for watching and good luckwith the sumo
Something you said at the beginning of the video about depression I really don't know what I would do without my vtr1000 I love this bike the way it delivers the power is amazing and handles exceptional bike dry is only 427 lb super light bike low center of gravity when I'm up in the hills playing I feel like I died and went to heaven it's Heaven on Earth having that type of power in between your legs brand new tires it's like riding on a roller coaster that you're in control of you that know no what I'm talking about.. don't know what I would do without motorcycles I really don't
I know motorcycles are therapy
Puts a smile on your face no matter what as long as you can operate a clutch😂 edit definitely the drop factor other than handle bars and levers its cheap.
Well said, great video and excellent commentary.
Thank you kindly!
I have been looking at a super moto for my first bike and this video makes me happy. The drz 400 sm
buy it you will love it
I have 1999 xr600r with 640 big bore and hot cam full yoshi pipe ect with street tires its nuts can smoke street bikes in town no problem i love it
The Ducati Scrambler seams to be a good choice for this segment. Except for price it a great bike.
The scrambler is nice especially the urban motard and desert sled but they are too heavy to be a real supermoto
I have two sumo’s, KtM 690smcr and a crf450rl. I love them. I would never be without one. Get a set of used race leathers and go have fun everywhere
how much more juice does that 690 have over the 450RL
