I bought a brand new DRZ last year and immediately felt what you said, outdated and expensive. My bike got stolen a couple months later and I replaced with a Husqy 701sm and couldn’t be happier!
So there's really only 1 option - KTM - which color do you want red, white or orange. The other bikes are meh...or not street legal. The best SMs came out in 2006 to 2012 Berg FS 570 Berg FS 650(hauls ass) APE SXV 550(The King)
First off...Really enjoyed watching your video. I personally ride a 2021 KTM 690 SMCR and my son has the 2020 Husqvarna 701 SMC..both pretty much the same bikes like was described in the video. We did do some minor mods to make them "wheelie machines" ...Wings exhaust, emissions delete, rottweiler intake and power commanders....the most fun motocross riders could possibly have on the street! These bikes are well worth the money invested! During your video, you covered the Kawasaki 300...you spoke of the power to ground being great and doing wheelies....I recently had the chance to ride one for a couple days as I was thinking of getting one for the wife. I will say that for a beginner bike...great...as for the expectations of an experienced supermoto rider..not so much. Stock top speed..down hill.. tucked and with a tail wind...83mph.. ( KTM and Husky are pulling "no clutch" wheelies at this speed). Wheelies are not even an option (making it good for a beginner). We actually had a 100$ bet going for the first one to ride a wheelie...no one took the prize, not even by dumping the clutch at a high rpm. I'm not knocking the bike, just want people to be that much more informed as to the dollar vs expectation ratio..
As much as I love the KTM/Husqy/Gasgas the prices are high af for streetbikes when you could get something like a 600 supersport, MT09, KTM 890 etc for that price range. Really wish the japanese would step up and do a 450-650 or so supermoto at a lower price point and normal street service intervals. Although they probably wouldn't weigh 300ish lbs.
I await the day that Japan rolls out that same bike in 500cc trim, as well. I really enjoy my 690 Enduro R, now a hybrid SM. I do my own oil changes every 1500/mi and filters every 3K miles and have had no issues at all after 8K miles on of Goon',ing!
Not gonna argue that the KTM is expensive!! But I am telling you they are ABSOLUTELY worth it! I was skeptical about dropping that much on a bike! But before I even got home on my 2022 690 SMCR I knew I made the right choice! I absolutely love this bike!
@@22smcrrider96 yep, there is not another single cylinder Moto out there that performs like the 690 LC4. Just wait until you "dongle" the fueling, upgrade airbox, and put a sweet exhaust on your Moto... Ready to Race. Safe Moto'ing, fellow 690 KTM Rider!
@@torytaylor693 I have a leo Vince exhaust on her. Haven't really looked into the fuel dongle or air box yet! I do need to get it tuned/remapped. Nice I always like talking to another SMCR rider!
The Sherco 50cc you talked about is one of the popular bikes among teenagers here in europe, at 14 you can get a 50cc moped license and can drive one of these bad boys, altough they are limited to 45kmh by the law. But here comes the fun part, these shercos have a Minarelli AM6 engine, which almost all 50cc enduros and supermotos have, making it easy to find parts to mod the engine with such as the carb, exhaust, ignition, ecu, crank, reeds, and most importantly the cylinder to increase the volume. People like myself have brought this engine from 5hp to over 10hp and some even at crazy figures like 34hp making it as fast as 125 2 stroke.
I’m SO STOKED for my 2023 KTM 450 SMR. I race big track with a KTM RC8C and ride kart track as my main way of training (previously with an Ohvale GP2) but decided to go 450 supermoto route for the size and higher speed to get as similar as possible to my RC. So stoked!
@@BornAGoon the Ohvale is a total blast as long as you’ve got a good kart track to stretch its legs. It honestly feels like a miniaturized superbike, it’s been super helpful for me in my club racing. Its the same body position, brake, throttle control - as my RC8C. So going from one to the other is quite natural!
In my opinion, you can't beat converting an enduro bike to supermoto. E.g 17" wheels, tyres gearing etc... It will give you the most raw and race ready feeling from the bike along with the most power due to little weight. This is just my opinion but anyone who is into supermoto would benefit from doing this as you learn lots along the way and also have way more fun on them than a factory 4 stroke supermoto. My KTM 125 and Gasgas 250 2 strokes are amazing and I will never part with them :)
WR700X and WR700R. I know it doesn’t exist. In my opinion, the WR250 had one of the greatest chassis and suspension of any dual sport released. It just feels proper and light. Add in the awesome engine from the MT-07 and Tenere 700 and it would be an absolute monster. There’s 2 in existence. I just want Yamaha to take a WR chassis and slap in a CP2. One can dream.
I have a 690 SMC R and a WR250f, I love my WR so much. It is a bike that you can really throw anything at, you can suit it up and it will deliver. If ANY rider wants to learn, go to a training camp for that realm of riding and pick up a WR to practice. I would suggest learning with supermoto, flat track, trail riding, and classic track days to get your feet wet. You can do a sumo conversion or pick up any of the bikes listed here, but please own a WR250f once in your life.
Good stuff. 👍🏾 I like the idea of a 450RL SM build. I have a facility about 11 miles away that has SM and MX tracks and some of the best trail riding in the country is nearby, so being able to convert from use to the other is pretty attractive (as inconvenient and time consuming as it might be). If I don’t do that, I may consider building a Beta SM or getting the TM or one of the KTM race ready flavors.
I love my 2015 Drz, I replaced and re-jeted the carb, did the 3x3 air intake mod, full mrd header and shorty pipe combo and I felt a pretty big gain in power, just wish the frame was aluminum on them, if they did that the bike would be perfect, in my opinion.
Yea but when your wide open and a ktm 690 smc just flys past you with ease as you watch him ride away knowing your frame will last forever means jack sht! 😆
Swapping wheels on my dual sport takes 20 minutes. A half hour if I change brake pads and the rear sprocket. Longer if I give it a thorough clean while I'm in there. Its not so bad.
Looks great! , -what brands and models do you believe are a great start for a new rider to look into now in 2023 ? do you know if there is a brand making Super Moto that do not have all the neon colors, but look more like a vintage bike, more of a Triumph Bonneville or Harley Davidson, kind of steel bike with sot colors or just steel? A design that look more like a classic cafe racer , a "street racer" designed with a classic look and not like a dirt bike in plastic and neon colors?! thanks !
@@BornAGoon aha, I am new to this, what is a full sumo style? what brands and models do you suggest me to go look at the local dealers? thanks for getting back! People tell me the Svartpilen is not so strong, not so nimble as a Supermoto.. what a Corner Weapon that is fun and street legal.. maybe the Svartpilen is great.. I do not know yet, am in process taking the MC license now. ... Supermoto seems like the most fun type of riding!
Mr Goon: What about the FE350. I have an enduro bike that i converted street legal and I want to take it to the local kart track for open track days. What say you? Thanks for the great vids!
I was or might turn my 04 CRF250X into a super moto, The rebuild I did on the motor with titanium valves and a nice bottom end is lasting so long and the transmission is long enough for me, I have got her up to 70MPH on a dirt road on stock tires and a 18" rear wheel. It did not feel good sliding around but it did it. And a have a TTR125 with a yz85 front fork and the stiffer frame mod, I am waiting on a guy to give it back, I gave him a complete rebuild of parts to him and I think I am going to get super moto wheels and play with it on the street =)
I have a 21' KTM 690 SMC R but was wondering why you didn't include the KTM 500EXC or the Husqvarna FE501s. I know you mentioned that you were mainly going to list factory SM ready bikes, but those 2 are true lighter SuperMoto with the change of wheels and tires (& a few other things if you're very particular like myself). Like you mentioned the 950SP is too heavy to realistically be a supermoto, I sometimes feel that way about my class of bike (690/701/700). They have the power to make up for the difference in weight that they have over the 500/501s, but they still don't quite have that light weight dirt bike frame about them either (like my KX450). Ironically, the only power to weight ratio that I've calculated that is better than my class of Supermoto's(690/701/700), is the 950SP. Even though the 950SP isn't a single. Ducati's new 698 MONO hypermotard looks to be built exactly like the 690/701/700's. It's going to be an interesting bike because I believe it's going to make about 10 HP over the 690/701/700 model bikes, yet will weigh slightly more (10-25lbs). So 75ish HP on the 690 and 85 on the 698 with a racing exhaust is what I've read so far. It's going to be interesting to see one this year. Great video though man, just though the 500exc and the 501s should have been at least mentioned due to their frame and engine size.
Great vids man! my opinion..dual sport is probs best option if limited for factory motard options in your region. Ride mine everywhere , wouldnt wanna be without one really.
Here in Oklahoma, you can ride a license permit to ride a motorcycle on the street at the age of 14. When I was this age in 1999, the limit was a 250cc, so I wanted a Ninja 250 so badly. A year after I started working as the Sales Manager for a Honda, Kawasaki & Yamaha dealership in 2014, they raised the limit to 300cc since the 250's grew to 300's. I finally got that Ninja in 2014, but I got the 636 and I still have it at 37 years old. Currently rebuilding a 2007 GSX-R 750 that I plan on selling once completed
Re: the 50cc Sherco, the "moped" designation I think refers to bikes that are limited to that maximum displacement that can be ridden legally by people (minors usually) without a license on designated bike lanes or streets posted below highway speeds. I think higher displacements may also be allowed, but they require some type of governor. These are very common in Sweden (which I'm familiar with), but rules can vary somewhat in other European countries, I think.
@@BornAGoon they are usually limited too 45kmh and are not allowed on the highway. you can drive them with a moped licence in my country at 15 years old
Love my drz, but the head gasket blew and I’m debating on just getting it back on the road again or doing a engine rebuild(for the experience) it’s an old 09 that has had a hard track life.. Can’t wait to get my little Honda(cb-300f) back, it went to the shop with an issue with stalling while at idle
@@craziiejay if the wallet wasn't just destroyed on gifts for the fam I'd prob ask for info lol. I'm sure you won't have issues selling it tho. Great bikes
We can all agree KTM makes the best bike. 9:07 Still I purchased a Husq. for other reasons. I have trouble believing the Gas Gas bike is a better super moto, but what do I know?
i got my 690 smcr brand new for 9000€ out of the door. Due to the switch from eu4 to eu5 they wanted to get rid of old stock. For that price it is the best bike ever. Reliable if you run it in correctly and use motul 300v 15w60 offroad oil. and conofrtable. 200+ mile days are no problem with a comfort seat. it wheelies, stopoies..is a dream to slide as it has a slipper clutch and fantastic front end feel due to the wide forged billet triple clamps. Love it
Wicked video, thanks. Gonna have to disagree on you dissing the Hypermotard. Before you slauaghter me, yes, I have had many motards and also two Ducati Hypermotards. The Hyper is a work of art + any motard lovers’ wet dream + most superbike riders’ nightmare on the track.
TMs are so fun, my '11 carburated SMR (street legal SMX version for the european market) is kicking ass in both track and mountain pass (as long as there aren't any long straights ofc)
Can confirm the hypermotard 😂 rode it once 7 years ago, just begain riding a Virago 535... well the leg came out automatically turning cuz you can't turn that like a racebike😂 to much attractive to ride like a badass dirt/sumo bike❤ Love the sherco❤ Can't effort a 4th bike😂😅
I have a Ducati hyper. I agree it is not a true supermoto but it is loads of fun! Would like to get a 701 at some point but already have the hyper for street and a TE300 for dirt. Can’t justify a 3rd bike and don’t want to sell the Duc!
you get yourself an old sherco/hrd SM ,you put on the big bore kit and throw the long stroke crank in there and you're gonna by a happy guy on a bike that weighs sweet FA! like 80kg with like 25 -30 horse and even better its a 2 stroke! you cannot go wrong there you go !
With dealer mark ups it sometimes cheaper to convert one yourself. I did with my current 2022 450r. Originally I was looking at a smr 450 or the fs450 brand new but dealers were ridiculous with their prices. 14-16k usd for them at every dealer I went to. It was insane. Found a brand new crf450r for 9200 otd. Wheels brakes and suspension cost me just under 1500. So about 10.7k after everything and it’s dialed in for me. Not bad for a brand new race bike. Love the Honda chassis too. Maybe when prices settle down I’ll get a new smr or fs to race on.
Thats for sure these damn markups are nuts It seems to be tapering down a little but retail price is just a number I spent 2 days negotiating my CRF 450RL down last year The bike had a 10,000 sticker and the first pass when the salesman sat down was 14,200 otd Eventually got it for 12,700 otd
The best all around SM is by far the Kawasaki 300 SM. After you uncork all the Cali emissions a pipe and a EJK tuner, you got a very good all around motorcycle for very cheap and Kawasaki quality. I only wish that Kawi would add compression adjustment to the forks right now you got rebound and no high speed on the shock.I don't know why that is.
Gas Gas seem to only list the 2023 with Mag wheels and yet all the footage you found has spoked. Having seen the mags first hand, they make the bike look cheap and feel like they'd shatter on the first sketchy whoolie touch down. I'd kind of hoped they'd changed that for 2023. 😕
I've only owned a DRZ and was looking into getting another one but a KTM 690 or the 701 might be better. Even though the seat will be a but high for me.
Bought a nicely mod'ed DRZ about 2 years ago. Rode it every day commuting. Right up until it snowed. Rain or shine, it was really easy. It's a completely ham-fisted bike. Handled well enough but it was missing something. It would pull hard right up to maximum speed ( comfortable RPM was about 70-75 mph). I found I was constantly reaching the maximum and needing to back off. Besides the lower speed limit roads. I was always waiting for the next turn. In other words. I'd quickly run out of motor. Last month I stepped up to a fully kitted 21 690 SMC-R. I no longer run out of motor. I haven't "waited" for the next corner because it gets here in the appropriate amount of time. In other words. THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! Definitely worth the extra money. Should remain fun for quite a while. It's winter so I'm just detailing the ergos and a few cosmetic things. The DRZ is a great gateway bike but it leads to harder bikes.😏
100% agree! I debated on getting a DRZ but all I could think about was I would want more power! I finally talked myself into going all in and just bought a new 22 SMCR! Best bike I've ever had without a doubt! In the first few months I modded her up with exhaust intake and power commander! Then this past summer I changed the sprockets up for a lil more down low power. Did a -1 up front and +3 out back! I think it's now PERFECT. Hope you enjoying yours
@@22smcrrider96 I wish I was enjoying it but I'm not. I've pretty much ran out of simple things to do to it. Now it sits in my garage.😒 Only because it's 18* out 😏 Last things were swapping out the aftermarket mirrors that were all but useless. Also added some reflective pinstripe to pull the bike together. Mine is black and gray and the rear was very bland. So I added a couple of minor touches to shrink and add detail. A little night time visibility isn't a bad thing. So far. I've only had one dry ride. Yep, it's well worth the money. Plenty of power, great handling and pretty decent brakes. Hard to really do much in the wet but so far, it's great 👍 I've got several bikes from the 90's (mostly). This is my favorite besides the 500 two stroke. Cheers from the PNW Seattle area.
@@franktaylor7617 yeah mines been sitting in the basement for a while now too. I'm in Pittsburgh PA area so it's stupid cold here too. For mirror I highly recommend the ones from rottweiler performance. I think they are CRG flip up bar end mirrors. I really like them and they actually WORK! They are a lil pricey but I think they were worth it for sure. No vibration and I can actually see past my shoulders
@@22smcrrider96 Well my plan with the mirrors was. To replace just the mirror part and use the old mount. I'm a bit of a fabricator so I'll usually modify something first. So I bought the cheapest one I could find. I needed just the mirror part. I wasn't concerned about the mounting arrangement. I also needed it to swivel. Once I got the cheapos. I started messing around with the mounts. Swapping pieces and whatnot. I still wasn't happy. The mirror glass was good, shape and size were right. Just didn't like where they were going to sit. Then I realized. If I just use the factory bolt holes and twist the mount around. They'd work fine. I was really disappointed. I didn't want them up over the bars but they worked so well. I choose function over form. Maybe I'm growing up? I did have to get longer bolts and use the proper spacers to clear the brake reservoir and being them to the same height. I haven't had the chance to ride and see how well they work. They're slightly convex so the view is good. The angular mounts fit with the bikes overall angular layout. They're actually bar end mirrors (I don't really care for bar ends much). They're just mounted on top like the OEMs. I went through 3 or 4 different mirrors for the DRZ. Never found anything I was completely satisfied with. The ones that came with the bike are so convex, you can only see lights. Can see any details. Can't judge the speed of anything coming up behind. They sucked. Seeing behind me right and left is important while cutting through traffic on the highway. Also being able to identify a vehicle is nice. I'll see how they work. If they work well. I might get a higher quality set. These were the cheapest on Amazon. And they fake carbon fiber 🤢 Like I said. I just needed the glass part. Now I have silly bogus carbon on my nice bike 😆
@@22smcrrider96 I just uploaded a short video. Wasn't highlighting anything but the pin striping. Wasn't sure if I liked it so I sent a message to a buddy. Can get a glimpse of the mirrors, some vinyl work on the fender and a few other things. I'll add a link when it's done.
This will always be the question around super Moto bikes. The truth is it’s a niche performance machine that’s got almost a big enough following to carry over into the mainstream market which is where bikes have been successful. But a big part of it is that you’re talking about a very specific machine That’s designed to be high-performance. Personally I think you’re better putting that money into quality parts. Otherwise just buy a DRZ 400 SM because they’re pretty good out of the box and they’re readily available and you’re not gonna get much better than that unless you’re willing to put a lot of money and work into it which is what you should do if you truly want a high-performance competitive machine. You’re not gonna buy one unless you’re gonna be spending 15 grand or more which is cool if you have it but you’ll be a lot better getting a good solid dependable dirtbike in the right power range and putting your money into good suspension wheels and brakes and tuning because you’ll end up with a much better quality bike in the end but There’s obviously enough people out there willing to pay the money to have them keep doing it. Myself, a DRC 400 SM is probably more than enough as it will be for 99% of the people out there but if you have the money then some of these bikes are pretty awesome if you don’t don’t worry about it but if you’re serious about it you’re gonna be building your own bikes anyway and the others are kind of marketing for the amateur just to sort of sell a little bit of the dream and don’t take that the wrong way that’s freaking awesome. I’d say get a DRZ 400 turn it up adjust your suspension and put a little money here and there and you’ve got a 95% bike and there’s so many of them out there you can buy a good used one for 3800 bucks put a couple grand into it and for under six grand you’ve got pretty close to a competitive machine but if you got a bunch of disposable income and don’t want to put in the time and effort there are a lot of cool options out there now and I’m glad the companies are making them. I wish they I put a little more effort into the dual sport midsize bikes which there are almost none of anymore. That’s another reason the DRC keeps selling so well and there’s so many of them out there because it doesn’t really have any competition Kawasaki and Honda 300s are basically a 250 which is cute if you’re skinny and short but if you’re a full size person you outgrow those real quick and when you start getting into the 650s and up you’re talking about a big heavy beast. That leaves the CRF 450 and the RC 400 NWR. The WR is great because it’s pretty much a full dirt bike with turn signals the CRF is kind of a mess and they need to fix the computer then it might be good but as much as I want to hate it the DRC is the only real option it’s a thumper that will go 100,000 miles if you take care of it it’s cheap and has a huge aftermarket and is easy to work on. They used to have a lot of mid range bikes but The XT 350 the XL 350 and all of those are gone now. There’s a big gap in that middle range and it kind of sucks. If they put a six speed and a little bit of work in the DRC 400 there would be no other option in the mid range but even Suzuki doesn’t bother because they have no competition so why would they bother wasting time fixing what’s already gonna keep selling. The rest of the companies need to pick up their game I need an XT 400 we need a TW 350 we need an XR 400 L. Those are the bikes that most people really want in the end but you don’t have options of people buy other things and complain because it’s not a mid range simple dual sport. I guess it’s because they don’t want to sell you one bike that will last you forever they want to keep selling you other crap to keep you coming back maybe. I don’t know but I’ll take a mid 80s XL 350 all day long if it has an electric starter on it, And that you got a DRZ or you got to spend 11 grand or more to get some thing that kind of sucks and it’s gonna need several thousand dollars to make it be what you thought it was when you bought it like thE CRF 450L which is a pretty awesome bike but needs ridiculous amount of maintenance and Hass to be rebuilt after 20 K miles and has a crappy computer that cost $3000 to replace just to make it work like it should’ve worked when you bought it in the first place and Honda should’ve fix that already but they don’t even try. Honda change the game in the 60s and brought quality production motorcycles to the masses and the other companies are really good about following up and competing and they created some amazing bikes for many years but marketing has taken back over and screwed it up again and thankfully the super Moto group is in there but the rest of the dual sport mid range class is completely neglected and the reality is that’s what most people want and are going to keep forever. That’s why you can still sell an old Yamaha XT 350 for four grand. People been riding for a long time want that it’s just a good all-around bike it’s not the fastest not the best the magazines end reviewer’s aren’t gonna give it huge accolades but it’s what most people want and enjoy and they’re getting harder to get because they haven’t been making them for a lot of years
Sherco classifies them as mopeds and utilizes 50cc engines (in reality 48 or 49cc) because anything under 50cc doesn’t need to be street legal. As a “moped” under 50cc, you can ride them on the sidewalk. Which is probably what they are advertising with that little kid in their ad
Couldn’t disagree with you more. I’ve been riding off and on for 49 years. I have a Hypermotard and it is the Hooligan bench mark! 230, 300 even 450 is fine if your 16 or 17, but it gets real over 100hp. Anything less than a 400lb street bike, of any category, can be a handful over 60mph and frankly I like to leave my neighborhood once and a while.
Do u think a KTM 640 Duke II from the early 2000s would make a trackable sumo? I’m currently looking for one but they’re like non existent especially in the midwest.
I own a 2003 drz, that i converted to sumo, it looks unic. And i am selling mi street bob, to buy a 1250gs. I was thinking about geting a 1200 older gs , sell mi drz also and get a 690 smcr. I am pretty unshure. What do you think?
The reason the sherco and other 50cc are called moped is because that is how it is legislated in europe and kids can get a moped license for them. In Sweden every kid has one and they can be aprilia or many other brands also
Aprilia SXV550 is still the most iconic and powerful sumo of all time. Ask anyone that I have passed on the track on their 700cc overpriced Austrian machine. Lol. Plus the money you spend on maintenance, you save on front tyres, because that wheel hardly touches the tar.
yessir. No bike can rip the track like a 550. Only real sumo with a vtwin and being so light at the same time. Once in a lifetime bike. Totally understandable how it would not be made for company profit, that was a track animal with a plate on lol.
Yes I've owned one NOBODY knows unless you've ridden or owned mine was stage 3 map. And it DEMANDED RESPECT... smoked everything and everyone... with ease..
Waiting for all the main manufacturers to start building 500cc 6 speed out the factory 120mph supermotos . Got a feeling that gonna happen for a long time.
While I love Kawasakis, I have a 99 KX500 and 2002 KDX200, my 2020 KTM 690 Enduro R has been the most fun and capable dual sport I’ve ever ridden. That being said, I would really consider that Kawasaki for a local (30-50) mile bike to play around on, Highway speeds and long grades would tax a 230 too much.

In Europe supermoto is the shit for young people We're able to build a exc 500, te450, wr450, rr430 supermoto for under 10k (ofc mostly used bikes) and their streetlegal The 701 or 690 we call cruise ship or oil tanker because they're super heavy In Europe mostly every supermoto is a converted enduro like the exc or Beta rr Most pre build supermotos are boring compared to one you build yourself I switch to offroad every winter, I don't have an offseason Btw. Street legal 2 stroke supermotos are just the best
The day Yamaha releases a sumo that's some sort of crossbreed between the XT660X and the YZ450F, I'll eat my shorts. The XT660X does under the radar a lot and it is a bit fat for a supermoto but still a great bike. Would be nice to have a sumo lager that 450 without leaving the JDM side.

The sherico 50cc is one of many 50cc moped motards. And it has one of the most legendary 50cc engines called the AM6. The Am6 is one of the most tuneable 50cc engines along with the rabassa/Piaggo engines that Derbi uses. But i don't think you guys have Derbi in America, I've seen people tune those engines up to 110cc cylinder that Parmakit preduces. And I've seen them with over 30 hp from the stock 3. But these 50cc bikes are extremely popular in Europe and Scandinavia, And i even own a Derbi Senda 50cc (doesn't run yet😭). But almost every brand has made a 50cc motard, just not in America. Although i think that the Beta rr50 might be sold in America and it looks much better than the sherico but in my opinion it looks way better. And it has the Am6 too
When I lived in Europe there were so many small bore motards it was awesome We do have this Sherco now in America which is cool I think I need to build it Thanks for the tips on the engine
@@Ni3K Yes I'd assume so, I had my 690 enduro 2021 and SMCR 2020 slave cylinders go out within a month of purchasing the bikes which left me stranded on both bikes. Really pissed me off at the time. I had them replaced but the recall was not in effect yet, so I payed out of pocket because KTM denied the warranty claim. Received letters from KTM for both models after so they just went in the trash. Both have had not problems for over a year now, fingers crossed. They are both wonderful bikes to own performance wise. But since then my confidence in their reliability is shaky.
@@CallUrDrop Make sure to change the oil, because the brake fluid goes into the engine oil and can harm it, it is aggressive. German TH-cam channel pirate racing is collecting evidence about this topic.
Ok, so answer me this? What ARE the criteria for a SUPERmoto? I traded my Speed Triple in on a Hypermotard when I started racing Supermoto, because of the ridig style. And no, its not a Supermotard... Its a HYPERmotard, and WAY different from a regular Naked bike, like my Speed Triple was. I have a Vertematti Offroad Racing VOR 450 SMRC for the track,a KTM 640 LC4 for the hoon, and Im currently restoring a Triumph Tiger 885 ADV bike. BRAAAAAAPPP!!!
The reason for those 50cc sherco's is mostly for europes -18 riders. (cars or real moto's aren't allowed under 18 in europe) Most countries have a law here where you can ride a 50cc from 14+ with a 50cc license and some 16 with the same license depending on the countries so that's where sherco sells those the most. i'm 17 and i have a 50cc honda grom motard and i have lots of friends with these 50cc sherco's. Supermoto's are super cool and popular and for us -18 riders these 50cc versions are perfect. The law says we can only ride at a max of 45 km/h but most kids tune and modify their 2stroke 50cc's with bigger cilinders usually to a 70-90cc because they use the same stock minarelli am6 so no need for an engine swap. These 70-90cc upgrades can help us to get to 100-130 km/h max (+-60 mph) and a faster acceleration. similar popular bikes here are mostly Derbi senda's, aprillia rx50's, béta rr50 tracks and all of these 50cc supermoto's. It's like a must have for students here lol.
man, I don't think you mentioned the money that KTM pours into R&D and that leads to the sophistication of electronic support that could potentially save your life. Obviously the rider is the most important factor here, but you're paying for some of the best features and suspension out the door compared to other manufacturers. I love my 690 SMC and all my other bikes, don't overlook the genius in any of the bikes listed here! they are all great options, but this will always come down to different strokes for different folks.
Guys whine about not needing the electronic doohickeys. "I'm skillful enough I don't need them"....blah, blah, blah. So, simply turn them off. I have over 4 decades on two wheels and personally love KTM's suite of rider aides and agree that they make the ride safer. I can be sloppy with the throttle and.....no big deal. Anti wheelie is a treat on launches (I have surprised a couple sportbike guys). If I feel silly, I turn that stuff off and play away. My 890 has more options and I feel they are very well thought out..... except for the quickshifter. That kind of crunchy.
Nobody is anticipating a 230 cc Motard. Double it, and give it brakes, and that is the starting point. These 230s are sportsman's class ride, where it is outgrown in a single weekend if you've never ridden an SM before.
A farmer and his son had a beloved horse who helped the family earn a living. One day, the horse ran away and their neighbours exclaimed, “Your horse ran away, what terrible luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not.” A few days later, the horse returned home, leading a few wild horses back to the farm as well. The neighbours shouted out, “Your horse has returned, and brought several horses home with him. What great luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not.” Later that week, the farmer’s son was trying to break one of the horses and she threw him to the ground, breaking his leg. The neighbours cried, “Your son broke his leg, what terrible luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not.” A few weeks later, soldiers from the national army marched through town, recruiting all boys for the army. They did not take the farmer’s son, because he had a broken leg. The neighbours shouted, “Your boy is spared, what tremendous luck!” To which the farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see” - Chinese Proverb So…will I ever buy a KOVE motorcycle? Maybe so, maybe not. we’ll see.
The Sherco is meant for underage teenagers to ride in Europe, in countries like Germany and Spain you can ride bikes up to 50cc at 15 if you do the AM license, it's pretty common to see kids modifying these bikes with 74cc top end kits and going over 100kmh
Crf450L with the modified rx cam in it and a set of sumo wheels is easily the best possible supermoto imaginable.. that’s what I got. Things Honda reliable. 50 state legal. Under 270 pounds when you strip all the nonsense off it. And with the cam pumps out 55 wheel hp.. sorta expensive but it is just simply not possible to get anything better than that.. it’s either not as reliable not as legal or not as fast with any other option out there
@@scottforti3194 I’ve had a few. 2014 and 2018 500 exc that were awesome but leaked like a Harley and left me stranded more times than I care to admit, 2017 450sxf that the dealer had to buy back because the transmission blew twice working the first 20 hours, plus several older ktms. They cost significantly more out the door and mine needed a bit to keep them running. Not to mention the subframe and engine mount issues. That weight savings comes at a cost of durability. Also the 500 bone stock makes the same power as a 450l bone stock if you didn’t know. All street legal bikes are corked up for emissions. That’s just how it is now. Ktm is no exception and people are dumping money to uncork them just the same. Meanwhile my crf uncorked with a cam was much faster than my uncorked 500 while being significantly cheaper. I even raced that bike for a while and it never let me down. Easy to shed weight on the 450l/rl too. After weight savings it was a few lbs lighter than my 2018 500 full of fluids! No bike is perfect. Pick the bike that suits you the best. I’ve had plenty of ktms and Hondas and will continue to own whichever I like for the purposes I use them for. All are great and none are perfect. For supermoto specifically the Ktm chassis has too much flex. See it all the time when rider crack their engine mounts and the bike feels unstable. You’ll be spending extra time and money getting that sorted out if you want a proper supermoto.
@@JRodSMX you are saying ktm frame has too much flex for supermoto but why does every single person I know who rides supermoto have a ktm or a husky? Newer Ktm models have changed the frames
I bought a brand new DRZ last year and immediately felt what you said, outdated and expensive. My bike got stolen a couple months later and I replaced with a Husqy 701sm and couldn’t be happier!
Thats a real upgrade The 701 is all business
Lucky bastard...lol !
Was that "accidentally" stolen 😊
I wanted a 701! Couldn’t find one and settled for the 690 and LOVE IT!
I had a 2005 drz sm in 2005 and it felt outdated then.
So there's really only 1 option - KTM - which color do you want red, white or orange. The other bikes are meh...or not street legal.
The best SMs came out in 2006 to 2012
Berg FS 570
Berg FS 650(hauls ass)
APE SXV 550(The King)
I think that Gas Gas 700 looks amazing. 👌
Yes it does
I'm going to agree 1000%!!!
I love mine!!
Japanese will ask for the same if not higher than Europians.

I want one
I’m SO STOKED for my 2023 KTM 450 SMR. I race big track with a KTM RC8C and ride kart track as my main way of training (previously with an Ohvale GP2) but decided to go 450 supermoto route for the size and higher speed to get as similar as possible to my RC. So stoked!
How was that Ovale Always wanted to ride one of those the first time I saw Josh Herrin on one I was like damn
You have more flexibility with the conversion, and its easier to sell if you choose to
i have the new ktm sx 2023 125 converted to sumo and bro fr this thing is a beast 34hp on a 93kg bike
Your channel is quickly becoming on of my faves. Outstanding info with stellar scripting. My hat is tipped. Looking forward to moar.

One can dream.
a WR 700 would be interesting for sure
It will last forever
Yea but when your wide open and a ktm 690 smc just flys past you with ease as you watch him ride away knowing your frame will last forever means jack sht! 😆
My 2001 DRZ400E is still going strong in it's 470 Supermoto form.
....plus 6 gears , fuel injection , updated lights and dash , and maybe an extra 5bhp .
Hell yeah, I ride a 2023 KTM 450SMR on track and 2023 KTM 690 SMCR on the road. Both bikes are a complete blast.
Swapping wheels on my dual sport takes 20 minutes. A half hour if I change brake pads and the rear sprocket. Longer if I give it a thorough clean while I'm in there.
Its not so bad.
You are better at it than me Im more like an hour lol
I just got a 2022 ktm duke 390 for 5k. Can't beat that price and it's fun as hell. I traded my crf300l for it.
Looks great! ,
-what brands and models do you believe are a great start for a new rider to look into now in 2023 ? do you know if there is a brand making Super Moto that do not have all the neon colors, but look more like a vintage bike, more of a Triumph Bonneville or Harley Davidson, kind of steel bike with sot colors or just steel?
A design that look more like a classic cafe racer , a "street racer" designed with a classic look and not like a dirt bike in plastic and neon colors?!

These are very common in Sweden (which I'm familiar with), but rules can vary somewhat in other European countries, I think.
that makes sense thanks for sharing
@@BornAGoon they are usually limited too 45kmh and are not allowed on the highway. you can drive them with a moped licence in my country at 15 years old

Gonna have to disagree on you dissing the Hypermotard.
Before you slauaghter me, yes, I have had many motards and also two Ducati Hypermotards.
The Hyper is a work of art + any motard lovers’ wet dream + most superbike riders’ nightmare on the track.
I like the hyper I had a 2008 The bike has changed a lot since then Wish I would have kept it
My Aprilia sxv 550 was one of my favorite bikes. Supermoto is a ton of fun
TMs are so fun, my '11 carburated SMR (street legal SMX version for the european market) is kicking ass in both track and mountain pass (as long as there aren't any long straights ofc)
Can confirm the hypermotard 😂 rode it once 7 years ago, just begain riding a Virago 535... well the leg came out automatically turning cuz you can't turn that like a racebike😂 to much attractive to ride like a badass dirt/sumo bike❤
Love the sherco❤

A very helpful video just looking for a third bike SuperMoto fits the bill, to add to the Ducati multistrada + scrambler , Ash
I am 5'8" and my 2019 KTM Enduro R hybrid SM has me on tip toes but I enjoy it anyway.
Sherco thing is for EU markets, because licence things. 15 year old can ride 50cc, 16 can ride 125cc, 18 35KW and so on.

I wish I was enjoying it but I'm not.
I've pretty much ran out of simple things to do to it.
Now it sits in my garage.😒
Only because it's 18* out 😏
Last things were swapping out the aftermarket mirrors that were all but useless.
Hard to really do much in the wet but so far, it's great 👍
I've got several bikes from the 90's (mostly).
This is my favorite besides the 500 two stroke.

They are a lil pricey but I think they were worth it for sure. No vibration and I can actually see past my shoulders
@@22smcrrider96
Well my plan with the mirrors was.
@@22smcrrider96
I just uploaded a short video.
People been riding for a long time want that it’s just a good all-around bike it’s not the fastest not the best the magazines end reviewer’s aren’t gonna give it huge accolades but it’s what most people want and enjoy and they’re getting harder to get because they haven’t been making them for a lot of years
You left out the Fantic Xmf 125. Great toy in the city 😁
I'm still looking for a cheap 300sm.. but even ones with 5k miles are going for MSRP or more. Usually more
mopeds are for the streets here in sweeden and u can drive it as 15year old but its limited to 45km/h
Great vids! Learned a few things.
Glad to hear it!
BETA 500 ...... definitely worth considering.
amen to that love those Betas
Keep up the good work brether
Thanks, will do!
Well I did say it was a hooligan bike because I had one but it was too heavy for a supermoto cart track It was great on a big track though
What tires you running on your 450? I’m 650l guy..
Love Sumo life
The reason the sherco and other 50cc are called moped is because that is how it is legislated in europe and kids can get a moped license for them.
In Sweden every kid has one and they can be aprilia or many other brands also
I can see that file footage of Nevada State Drive in Henderson roundabout! Are you local in LV Valley?
If yes, "hi neighbor!" :)
Yes I live in Las Vegas neighbor
Great video...
Thanks!
hot damn them SWM bikws dont look half bad & theres a few TM dirt motos that look fkn dope for 5600 in everett - I like this little trend here.
SMCR build in Austria for the Austrian mountain streets and it fucking rips everything away there
Those are some good roads
Aprilia SXV550 is still the most iconic and powerful sumo of all time. Ask anyone that I have passed on the track on their 700cc overpriced Austrian machine. Lol.
Plus the money you spend on maintenance, you save on front tyres, because that wheel hardly touches the tar.
That was a great bike
And it DEMANDED RESPECT... smoked everything and everyone... with ease..
Husqvarna FS 450 Supermoto is my preference, i just need to figure out how to plate it
Same as my GSXR. 2015 hasn't changed aside from an ABS model.
Waiting for all the main manufacturers to start building 500cc 6 speed out the factory 120mph supermotos . Got a feeling that gonna happen for a long time.
I have a t7 and would love a set of streat tires and rims
While I love Kawasakis, I have a 99 KX500 and 2002 KDX200, my 2020 KTM 690 Enduro R has been the most fun and capable dual sport I’ve ever ridden. That being said, I would really consider that Kawasaki for a local (30-50) mile bike to play around on, Highway speeds and long grades would tax a 230 too much.
Agree Im not sure the 230 would hack the highway too well
The GasGas sliding through that building at 7:50 is not the 700 ;)
It’s a lot harder to steal a Hypermotard than the lighter Supermoto. I like them all and thrall are fun
Finally someone who pointed out the Hypermotard is not a supermoto. It's just a Monster for taller riders 😅
Great video man! ✌
Thanks! 👍
yeah but they sound bad ass!
@@BornAGoon saddened by your blind prejudice on hypermotards.. it's about how the bike is put to the task.. ask KKenny if the tz750 is a flat tracker.. if it can win titles.. then it's what is.. motard is "racing".. not street posing like many.. if it can win races.. it's what it IS EOS !!!!.. don't limit possibilities by YOUR limits.. or prejudice.. that could be viewed as re-tard
@@Errol.C-nz Well I did say it was an awesome bike and I owned one so I would know if it was a motard or not I also raced sumos nobody ever brought a Hypermotard to the track because its not a motard. You say " win races " what races do hypermotards win? Could Lukas Höllbacher win any FIM sumo races against the top pros on a hyper? Calling it what it is is not prejudiced it the bike's application. However, indicating that my view is "re-tard" may be more prejudiced lol
I have owned a 2001 DRZ400E for a VERY long time. I still own the bike and will NEVER sell it. It exists now as a supermoto'd 470 stroker/big bore. I absolutely love the machine. Having said that I agree with everything said about the DRZ400 in this video. The bike is simply NOT worth $8,000+ out the door new, not even close.
Best ever was the Husaberg fs650.
120kg. Missile.
In Europe supermoto is the shit for young people
We're able to build a exc 500, te450, wr450, rr430 supermoto for under 10k (ofc mostly used bikes) and their streetlegal
The 701 or 690 we call cruise ship or oil tanker because they're super heavy
In Europe mostly every supermoto is a converted enduro like the exc or Beta rr
Most pre build supermotos are boring compared to one you build yourself
I switch to offroad every winter, I don't have an offseason
Btw.
Would love to see more Yamaha participation

Made a crf300l into a supermoto. But also having a KTM Duke 690 and a lc640 enduro. It lacked the power of the KTM and found it a little boring. Sold it rather quickly. Have a Duke 790 currently and thinking about the KTM super moto or gas gas. We will see.

If only Yamaha made a supermoto with the CP7 engine. Until then I'll enjoy my butter smooth KTM 950 SMR.

Exactly, I run a 450 RFS EXC for revvy tracks and a 580 RFS for torque tracks, both street lega in Germanyl and competetive on the track.

Love my 690's. Just change the slave cylinder out immediately lol. KTM life.
Sweet
There is a big recall in Europe for the slave cylinder of all 690 models, is this not the case everywhere in the world?
Honda Redmoto? Do they not delever the CRF450XR or CRF450RX Supermoto anymore in 2023? Or do they not delever in the US? The last I don't believe.
Isn't the hypermotard a sumo for dads? You sorta get the old feels of a real sumo but more practical
Depends how old lately an aggressive sumo for me would be an adventure bike with slicks lol
@Born A Goon putting 17's on my 890 adv w/slicks does sound fun...
I would like to say my 2022 ftr base model is best super moto
How about the XR 650r
The reason for those 50cc sherco's is mostly for europes -18 riders. (cars or real moto's aren't allowed under 18 in europe)
Most countries have a law here where you can ride a 50cc from 14+ with a 50cc license and some 16 with the same license depending on the countries so that's where sherco sells those the most. i'm 17 and i have a 50cc honda grom motard and i have lots of friends with these 50cc sherco's.
I figured that was the case When I lived over there they had some cool 125 sumos and people rode Quads on the highway
man, I don't think you mentioned the money that KTM pours into R&D and that leads to the sophistication of electronic support that could potentially save your life.
One day, the horse ran away and their neighbours exclaimed, “Your horse ran away, what terrible luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not.”
A few days later, the horse returned home, leading a few wild horses back to the farm as well. The neighbours shouted out, “Your horse has returned, and brought several horses home with him. What great luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not.”
Later that week, the farmer’s son was trying to break one of the horses and she threw him to the ground, breaking his leg. The neighbours cried, “Your son broke his leg, what terrible luck!” The farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not.”
A few weeks later, soldiers from the national army marched through town, recruiting all boys for the army. They did not take the farmer’s son, because he had a broken leg. The neighbours shouted, “Your boy is spared, what tremendous luck!” To which the farmer replied, “Maybe so, maybe not. We’ll see” - Chinese Proverb
So…will I ever buy a KOVE motorcycle? Maybe so, maybe not. we’ll see.
At least in Baja’s Mx I can drive any of them on road 😮😊
The Sherco is meant for underage teenagers to ride in Europe, in countries like Germany and Spain you can ride bikes up to 50cc at 15 if you do the AM license, it's pretty common to see kids modifying these bikes with 74cc top end kits and going over 100kmh
I figured that but what a pit bike project that is
@@BornAGoon or even as a full sized bike, it's great fun to modify these things to get as much power out of them as you can
Not to be that guy but that sherco is far from full size. The bike goes like 45 mph and the suspension on that bike is built for like 50 kg.
cute though
Crf450L with the modified rx cam in it and a set of sumo wheels is easily the best possible supermoto imaginable.. that’s what I got. Things Honda reliable. 50 state legal. Under 270 pounds when you strip all the nonsense off it. And with the cam pumps out 55 wheel hp.. sorta expensive but it is just simply not possible to get anything better than that.. it’s either not as reliable not as legal or not as fast with any other option out there
Great bikes. The engine and chassis do great as a supermoto. Even competitive in the sport too. I abused mine for 14k miles before someone stole it.
Mean while ktm 450 and 500 exc-f exists literally lighter and faster 50 state legal
How can you type this knowing ktm exists
