I bought my 01 xr650r new. It’s now a SM with Hot cam, Baha lighting, FMF pipe. It’s got blinkers, horn and a license plate. SM tires, nobbies even a rear paddle for the dunes. This bike is, Go to Jail, fun. I’m 66 years old, still riding.
in italy we have a brand called TM racing that produces supermotards that are a great alternative to ktm because they build good quality handmade italian supermotards designed for that specifical type of riding at the same price or even less of a ktm and they are even street legal (according to Italian law)
I've been a sport bike guy for the last 6 or 7 years of riding. But im leaning more towards sumo. They just seem a lot more fun lol I enjoy twisties more than straight line speed, personally. And these seem so fun to rip around corners and wheelies and shit 😂😂 simple maintenance too
I recently got my personal unicorn dual sport, a plated '18 KTM 300-XCW, and I've been loving it as a dirt bike but it's so fun around town on the road that I'm burning through dirt tires (I just can't help myself) Now I feel like I HAVE to try the sumo thing.
I’ve had a drz400sm and now have a KTM 500 excf. Both are excellent bikes and I would gladly own and ride a drz400sm again. The KTM is just a different breed. It’s the most aggressive and amazing bike that I’ve ridden. I’ve been riding for many years and own many types of bikes and a supermoto will always be my freedom on two wheels. Their just the most fun.
@@levanshukakidze5007 i did exactly what you mentioned with my Drz s. Out of all my bikes its easily the slowest yet it is by far the most fun to ride. :)
I am 61 years young and ride a "hybrid" Spermoto. It is a 2019 KTM 690 Enduro R that I have turned into a SuperM. I have owned a great many motorcycles but this one is my absolute favorite! Warp9 Elite 17" wheels, Tekmo titanium header, Wings titanium exhaust can, KTM racing bar, adjustable levers, Rottweiler dongle and 02 delete, K&M filter, SC seat, Savage steering damper, Avon Trail rider tires, Perun Moto tail bracket, and integrated license bracket. Happy Hoon'ing to ALL!
@@BornAGoon Thanks, BAG. You are correct, SM rider's are a different breed of moto rider. I am happy to fit right in. Your videos are well made and you will find a bigger audience in the near future! Keep on keeping on, Brother Moto-Hoon. ✌️
@@Rakkasan-vr8xt No, it is mostly deep sand trails here. There are street/trail Avon's on it but I prefer carving thru traffic. It is a bit too pretty to beat up off-road. Happy Trails🇺🇲💪
Just turned 62 and on my third year with my 08 Yamaha WR450F SM conversion. I love it put about 2000 miles a year on it (have two other bikes). Besides the engine mods. I have also done suspension mods. with heaver springs (for my weight) stiffer. Added some extra lights so I can ride it to work at 5 am. Very fun! Still trying to ride wheelies like I did when I was 16 on my dirt bikes.
I built my supermoto out of a 11 husaberg 450fe. Absolutely love it as well. Hands down the best and most fun bike I've owned by far. I also have the dirt set up as well. You never mentioned tm which I'm surprised by. Look into them they are really killer bikes. If you ride a sumo your Def a different kinda rider. If someone is thinking of buying one do it. You will not be disappointed in the slightest.
I watched this video when it came out and loved it. I just watched it again today while standing in front of my 2021 drz400sm in the garage and you made me so much more excited for the spring to come and the dreaded snow to melt. I started riding on an mt07 which is known for being a fun, torquey, easily flickable feeling 700 like a big street dirtbike in a naked bike body and it is Loads of fun. But I live near trails and grew up riding dirtbikes. I then got my drz400sm there is just something about it. I can have more fun in more places without breaking as many laws. If it isn't just speed you are looking for a supermoto is by far more smiles per mile. Easy to say I sold my mt07 after a month of buying my new drz. And I can only imagine the adrenaline from an exc500f or a 690 but the drz400sm is as reliable as it gets for a supermoto and as someone that works on their cars, machines it is something to appreciate. Being able to beat the living piss out of my bike and use its full potential on any road or trail and needing the most basic of maintenance on stretched intervals is a quite beautiful thing. This video was great thanks for pumping me up for the 2023 season. much love to the supermoto fam all over! Most people think they are pointless or not "real bikes" until they ride one. From a cold canuck in ontario, Canada. Cheers.
Great video.. I’ve been riding for years. Built a 04 crf450 when I worked at a Honda dealer forever ago. You’re right, we are proud of our builds.. this ignited my wants for another super moto. Subbed
09 Honda CRF450X - Fluked in with a licence plate somehow, does duties as an MX race bike, Trail bike, Jump bike, Daily rider to work (at a Honda Shop) and a Road Race Track day bike with a full FMF system.
I had a SXV450 as my first bike and can't recommend it enough, learner approved too in Australia too. Only 10-15 kilos heavier than a CRF450 but with registration and even more revs available. Soft limiter was 10,000 rpm and hard limiter was 12,000 rpm factory spec topping out at 167 kph in 5th gear.
I lived in SF. I put street tires on my BRP. It had plenty power but the best thing was the view. You can't see crap on a gsxr. You can see something bad coming a lot quicker on a dirt bike and nothing could beat you in town.
I've had a 00 XR650r supermoto for 6 years now. It's a blast. I swap the stock wheels back on for trail riding. You are right about sport bike riders not knowing what to think when they get passed by a big red pig coming out of a corner with my fat arse on it. 🤣 Hell just yesterday chased down my buddy on his sv650 then his friend on his mt09 on these back roads out in Mexico. When we stopped the guy on the MT09 was like "wth is that thing. It's a rocketship." I love that reaction almost as much as the look of disappointment when I pull up on a "dual sport" to a sportbike ride.
The most underrated bikes are the husaberg fe series 2009-2012, 70° engine and its reliable as hell, always gets great lubrication even in long and high wheelies. Best purchase ive ever made. Definitely recommend them to someone who wants a supermoto in class with the ktm exc 450s and husqy 450s but more reliable and cheaper
The first Honda you showed was the 650R or the big red pig(BRP) only water cooled XR...only made from 2000 to 2009 I believe truly a beast I loved owning and riding the shit out of it.
I am 65 years young and ride two bikes one is a hayabusa turbo street fighter making 400 hp to the rear and the other is a 2022 KTM690 smcr and it is tricked out. The only thing that bothers me is, my jaw hurts for cringing all the time!! To much fun am going to do track days on it as well.
new, sure there's not a plethora of bikes. But there's plenty of older motards that I would give my wisdom teeth for and have over the years: Huqvarna Nox (royalty), Husky SM510, 2005 Husaberg Fs650S -Force Edition (my current bike), 2007+ Husaberg FS650, Husaberg FS570, Aprilia SXV - these are all next level bikes and I would take them any day.
Several years ago I had a full MX-built Honda CRF450*R* and a built CBR1000RR (both same year) .. at that time I was MUCH more comfortable on my street bike than I was on my dirtbike, but I LOVED and rode them both alot!! But the most fun I EVER had on a bike was when I put the supermoto wheel kit and changed the gearing/sprockets on my crf450r.. Also I live in a place where the law is very loose on what is considered road-legal..
Few more options out there too. Tm make some fantastic supermotos, also check out the CCM R30 definitely old school Sumo. I've a had a few supermoto's now but settled for ktm 250 Exc. It's definitely worth converting an enduro everything is better quality and build to be ridden hard even on the tarmac keeping them maintained is a full time job but the fun is second to none. Great content 👌
Jr Goon here, my 450RL has a pair of Warp9 SUMO wheels as well. With the AIM ECU it is a fun machine. I mostly put the Warp9’s on in the summer and the cornering is awesome and no ABS as well. Thank you Professor Goon a great vid once again
I’ve got a 2020 690, it’s all true, fast AF. Change out the Clutch master slave, get Vanasche fuel filler, change headlight to Dual 5, Wings exhaust (slip-on) and a few other mods. So much fun and never gets old or less exciting.
I sold my KLXsm 300 to a friend. I did get to ride it in the mountains in Tenn. What a hoot. Just needed a little bigger engine to make a dynamite do everything motorcycle. I love motorcycles, and this video speaks true. Thanks friend.
Just sold my 06 KTM 625 SMC to a co-worker and he is nothing but smiles for it. It took him two years to convince me to get rid of it. I also owned a 2015 Hypermotard SP which I used as a down payment on an F150 a few years ago. The Ducati was a fun bike for the back roads of the Oregon Coast, but as a former motocrosser of 22 years the KTM was more fun with less power.
I am currently building a Ducati 996 and I've been thinking for a long time, after I'm done with my Ducati, to build a 2 stroke supermoto out of a Suzuki RMZ.
I purchased 2015 DRZ400SM yesterday. I had been considering converting either my DR650 or my DRZ400S. However, this 6500 mile unit popped up and I had to strike. Looking forward to learning how to properly enjoy this unit and very well may still do a conversion on the DR650. We will see. Thanks for the content.
I owned a brand new 2006 KTM 660 SMC back in the day with a view to racing in the 660 cup only to be told only the older single pipe models were eligible. I went on some Supermoto trackdays and the CRF450 was the bike to have at the time, the 660 was a bit heavy. I bought a 2 or 3 year old CRF450 crosser in 2008 and converted it before moving abroad instead of racing it. When I got back a couple of years later the CRF450 was no longer competitive so I traded it in for a 2007 KTM 560 which had a built engine. I raced in the open class in 2011 but it was already struggling against the newer KTM 450's and in 2012 I wasn't competitive at all and was one of only a handful of larger capacity bikes out there. I couldn't afford to run new slicks let alone keep upgrading bikes so I sold it and called it a day. The KTM 660 was my favorite, awesome for wheelies, not that bad on fuel and I've only ever seen 2 of my model in real life, my best mate liked mine so much he bought a new one too. Servicing was a nightmare on it as you had to bleed the air from the frame which held the oil and it needed to be done every 1000 - 1500 miles. I later got a kawaski versys 650, fitted some renthals, made a few minor changes to the suspension and with a long service interval kind of got the best of all worlds. I took that on a tarmac supermoto only day and was beating a lot of supermoto's with it. I also took the versys offroad a bit in Spain and it had capability in the dry.
I daily a Ducati scrambler, but I miss my crf250l flat track. Just put another 18 on the front because I was cheap back then. Going slower faster is way more fun going faster slower
Great vid! I agree with your points. Currently just about done building a FE501 SM. For anybody on the fence of building vs buying, just buy a DRZ400SM or 690/701SM. The headaches of converting aren't worth it. I'm going to be $8K-$10K into my conversion (not including price of bike) when all is said and done. Granted I'm going all out but there's too many little annoying issues that pop up with a conversion along with waiting months for wheels to be built and obtaining proper brakes. I could have been riding a 701SM for the last 4 months instead sweating and cussing in my garage.
I agree I thought the same I bought sumo wheels for my 450RL and I have about 2k in it When I was doing this vid I thought damn I could buy one of those KLXs for 6k and have 2 lol
@@torytaylor693 You're right. I'll be stoked when it is finally done. I must admit a lot of the issues are self inflicted. I didn't have to go with tubeless Warp 9's that won't hold air. I didn't have to go with the Xtrig triples that came with the wrong bar mounts and I didn't have to go with the widest rim that causes chain rub. Once the wheel is fixed it'll be ready to rip. Just a frustrating process.
My built my first bike ever. While it was satisfying in the end, I too felt that the headaches just weren't worth it. So years later I bought a 701 and a KLX300SM. 701 is for the twisties. KLX is for everything else.
I'm 72 and did a SM conversion on a 2002 KLR650. it was a junker when I bought it but durable, you can't kill it. I made my own 18 inch front wheel for around 150 bucks and have been putting on big miles for twelve years. I don't race but I rode it to Canada a few years ago (1000 miles) I commute with it year round. it will handle curvy roads so well it is fantastic--it handles dirt roads great as well. I have spent maybe 1200 bucks total.
I have ridden a drz400sm and a ktm 500 exc and loved noth but i just picked up a 2023 husqvarna 701sm and couldn't be happier. Most fun I have ever had on a bike. You don't care how much you spent when your riding this thing.
Interesting…why the 701 over the 500exc…bc I have the 500 and I personally went with it over the 690 bc of the weight and the fact that it’s a dirt bike for all intents and purposes
@@tjlovesrachelthe 500 is underpowered for the type of street riding I like to do Yea it’s not great for the dirt like the 500 but for me personally I like the power range of the 701 for street I’ve ridden the 500 exc and you have to do a lot of gearing changes to make it more suitable for highway riding. What I wish I would’ve done is bought the 701E instead of the 701SM though because you can’t wheel swap the 701SM due to the brake and fork setup So the 701E would’ve been a better buy for doing both street and dirt
Up here in Canada trying to get a SuMo is tough because you can't convert a dirt bike due to our laws. It has to be a dual sport, or it's illegal and doesn't count as a road bike. Another reason why dual sport bikes are so expensive and hold their value so well second hand here these days.
Sound like you are just have to step up and get a Dr.Z 400sm. You'll love it, and it sounds like they hold their value, even if you don't for some reason.
I managed to luck out-fellow Canadian BCer here- I have a converted KTM 530 XCRW baha bike that was converted to street legal before the laws changed. My bike is still st legal because it was legal before the rule change.
I grew up on dirt bikes. Always thought it would be nice to have one on the street. Went Fzr on the road, but in my 50s I can't handle the riding position anymore. Looking at an SMR 450 today for my future riding fun
If you want to understand/get a good look at the supermoto community you need to check us scandinavians/europeans out. I personally got my A1 license and bought a KTM 125 EXC 2006 as a first bike, and that is sumo converted and have a smr 450 front suspension on a 660 SMC trippleclamp and a complete fs450 (2023) front brake setup. A quickshifter ;) And tons more. I dont think there is any better place than scandinavia to get a understanding of the custom/converted supermoto scene!
I've ridden some other dirt bikes, but I've always been into road bikes. So, one day, when i finally bought a dream bike, i wasn't sure what I really wanted. I split all my contenders down, until i had narrowed it down between a 2020 KTM SMC -R and a 890 Duke R naked road bike. While between the two, I'm fairly satisfied with my purchase of the Duke. However, while still daydreaming of pure supermoto, I think that my choice was a rough one with KTM either way. I had heard a number of recall issues for both the SMC and the Duke. The SMC looks like a cheap quality trap, honestly. My bike, bought brand new off the dealership floor with 1 mile on it, started leaking oil from the head gasket almost immediately, and pretty heavily. I took it back for a warranty issue. It ended up taking a month and a half. Apparently that was a month straight of pending KTM's approval to cover it. Every time I need the simplest of parts, it can be a potential month or more wait time. KTM is notorious for having their more rare merchandise and parts wait list longer than 6 months. Great bike to ride, lots of fun. Still not pleased with the price point and the maintenance of this bike. It was like 13-15 Gs after taxes and options, and it's constantly shredding tires, chains, sprockets, etc. Guess that's what it's supposed to do. However, its a niche enough bike, that while its unique to ride, it doesn't exactly do anything better than other bikes you could get for the same price. Although although, it does have the best torque of it's engine class. That's kinda KTM's deal over the YZ's and MT09's. Anyway, cheers!
I have heard the SWM's are heavy. Yamaha made a dedicated Super Moto version of the WR250R, they called it the WR250X, rare as hens teeth but I did see one for sale about a year ago, going for the same price as the R's at that time. You can spot them easy because they have black forks and frame.
I love to have any of these bikes but here in Florida but there are no tracks to ride them on. I built a kx65 supermoto for my son almost twenty years ago and had a lot of fun watching him. But all of our riding spots started to dry up. (old parking lots). We just ride a lot of HS and Enduros now. Occasionally hit the track on our SV. It's fun to watch the guys rip past a liter bike at Deals Gap on one of these. I would have one if we had that kind of riding here in FL. Love your channel.
Love the content man! I totally agree that our AMA Supermoto Series is dead. Got my first National win last year in Sturgis and this year they havent even released a schedule yet! Was planning to chase the championship this year but guess not haha. North American Supermoto Shootout is working on some great things though!
Nice vid thanks. I saw one mistake that I'd like to bring to your attention. The first image you show when talking about the XR 650L at 16:29 is actually the XR 650R. The 650R is a bike designed for desert racing, the Baja in particular, and it was particularly successful. Also a good platform for SM with engines lasting around 60-80k miles before needing a rebuild in cases.
@@derekjooste9339 you are right and wrong....the bike in the image is not the 650 R IT IS 600 R ...650R IS LIQUID COOLED BIG RED PIG ...LOL THAT BIKE SHARES THE SAME ENGINE AND MANY PARTS WITH THE L VERSION. FYI.
@@crashalexander7232 I just double checked, if you pause the video you can see the radiator, the 650R on the seat and radiator shrouds and I checked the lines of the bike again. It looks a lot like the 02 650R I used to own. But yes, I've heard that the 650L is based on the 600R.
I couldn't agree more on the 690 platform! I've owned/rode more bikes than I can even count! I always wanted a Supermoto but was never in a position to get one until this past year so I went all in and got the 2022 KTM SMCR 690 and holy f**k it's everything I dreamed it would be plus a whole lot more! I absolutely love it
I had the 21 690 smcr, awesome bike and loved it. Extremely fun to brap around and pop some wheelies and slides. Mine was very reliable as well, didn't have any issues (only a fuse in the first 200 miles) in over 7k miles. Pretty expensive, but damn it's gonna make you smile! Only switched because I want something to do long distance rides. My longest one on the smcr was 250 miles and even though I put a more comfortable seat I was done for the day lol
I am riding a Husqvarna Svartpilen, which also comes with a quick shifter, and also has the option to set off the rear wheel ABS to get in super moto mode and drift around corners. It has the same chassis and engine as the KTM 390, but come up more like a flat track racer with around 150kgs.
I can't remember what the thumbnail said, but you should add text that says it's the ultimate guide to Supermoto. Because I didn't get that before I clicked it. Great video!
I took a 20 year old Husqvarna 510 and did a full nut and bolt ground up build. 60hp at the rear wheel and wet fully to ride 120kg. Hands down the most fun bike I have ever owned. All in $7k AUD
I believe the engine in the XR650L is the same miss that was in my 1996 NX650. Basically a very refined RFVC engine that stared in the mid 80s or before. I would LOVE to have one but alas, they are available in the US, but not in Japan.
I appreciate this video. I grew up riding dirt bikes my whole life. I’m looking to get my first street bike and knew from the beginning I wanted a super moto no question. Its what I feel the most comfortable on and for my first road bike I want that familiarity. I got my eye on the 701 right now.
Cagiva supercity 125cc 24bhp had one for 3 years, never let me down, 112mph 7 speed box, loosely based on the dt125 engine, check it out , fun times tbf
Ooof, at the 16:28 mark you called an XR650R a 650L... ouch (a pimped one too with CRF forks spliced on and a massive front brake rotor). Forgivable, sort of... it's Honda's fault for making one letter differentiate two completely different bikes. But still... if you kept finding XRRs in SUMO trim but not XRLs... it's telling you something, no? I wish you'd have mentioned the 650R as a potential SUMO at least. Forums are full of XRR SUMOs and they look amazing. Guys love 'em even though I know they don't have the punch of a 701 or any of the new bikes you mentioned. Still, I can't imagine they'd not be better than the 650L in every respect. I have two XRRs now and will one day take one of them down the SUMO road... when my African desert riding finally brakes me or I move somewhere with better tarmac... probably about the time I'm too chickensh*t to ride it properly, but it'll be a blast to try!
I grew up with a Husqvarna dealer around the corner at the beginning of this century. So wheeling supermoto's and enduro's are part of my youth and one of the reasons i ride today. I cant wheelie do...
I built my Xr650r with takasago supermoto wheels. High compression piston and FCR carburator from Crf450. It was a rocket 🚀 i miss that bike. BRP for life
I bought a Lextra 300, 2 stroke ( in USA and UK is imported with name of GPX), I changed the spokes, rims and tyres, from 21/18 to 17/17. I have my supermoto 2stroke.
Bro have you ever seen tm motards? They are made in Italy! They make 2 strokes and 4 strokes, from 85 cc up to 500 cc if I don't get it wrong. In Italy it is a really famous manufacturer, especially whit the 2 stroke 125 cc motards, made with carburetors or with fuel injection, bought primarily from 16 yo with 15 hp, modified up to 30 hp per wheel and having only 100 kg of weight
Owned 2 KTM 625SMC's a DRZ400SM and '06 WR450F. The WR was my favourite, because of the FCR carb and paired with an FMF PC3 it was shooting flames in the streets! The KTM's came with the best equipment and made great power, those models were rare too, the only problem was electrical faults with them. Of all of them the DRZ engine definitely my fave sound and the front end handling was superb.
I converted my Honda CRF250r (09 mod) to SM, it is so fun and effortless to ride on the road, Ive ridden liter bikes and those are exciting but theres just something about these crotch rockets!
My first ‘big bike’ was a Drz400sm…was an amazing platform to learn all kinds of illegal riding. Over thirty bikes and 18 years later my SM of choice is a BRP XR650R…I’ll never sell my pig. It’s brilliant.
Nice video! Wanted to add a few points here to anyone looking. Technical bits. When you were talking about the 690 smc and 701 early on you were showing a lot of 450smr track footage. And later when you were talking about the smr450 you were showing husky 701. Very different beasts. At the end you snuck an xr650r pic in there. Those were great bikes designed for baja. Aluminum frame. Liquid cooled etc. Not street legal from honda but loads of them around have been converted. From a technical point i wanted add a few things. Dirt bikes converted to sm generally handle better than an sm converted to dirt. The rake and trail numbers get messed up which is why sm race bikes have lower offset triple clamps and often shorter swing arms. 2k to convert is generally the low end. A drz for example has a cable driven speedo and you need to factor in a few extra parts like a digital speedo. My ktm 450 race bike was 5k to convert without a slipper clutch or triple clamps. You could buy used parts and get away for $1000 if you can find a deal. I opted to spend a bit more on brakes and tubeless rims. From a platform perspective ktm used to make pretty unique smr bikes up until the 2011 chassis change. From then the smr and sxf bikes were really close. Smr had different offset clamps. A slipper clutch and slightly different trans ratios. The older sm bikes from ktm had more unique parts like frames. At the end of the day get what you can get :) The older husky 450/550 bikes had some transmission issues. Ive heard swm has refined them over the years. If someone is getting a bike to ride street and track check with the track to see the rules. A 690/701 generally isnt allowed on kart tracks while a ktm500 would be. Drz is a great entry point. 02 to current S model makes a great entry bike. Not the fastest but handles well on track and is fast enough to have fun. I dont suggest dumping a ton of money into any bike without riding a bit. My first sm was a drz i converted and snowballed quick. Then i went to an rmz450 and moved to ktms. I personally prefer the ktm feel on the track and had trouble with front end feel and liked the steel frame. Lastly i would Highly suggest supermoto to anyone. Its a blast on street and even more fun on track. Highway is really the biggest downside.
Yes, I know I showed other footage because my bike was just converted, and the last time I raced, SM GoPros were not invented. I am low on sumo footage, Same with the XR. It was hard to find a converted XL Thanks for the input and for watching
@@BornAGoon all good! I just wanted to point it out for those watching so not to confuse. I saw a converted crf450rl on the road yesterday. I am glad honda finally made that bike. I owned a drz from 03 to 2013 and always hoped for an rmz450l. Currently i have an sxf450 i managed to get plated. Just walked into the dmv and out with a plate. At the time i had 2 of them. They turned one down but approved the other. The key was the original title from ktm that cant be reprinted. Those get lost but i bet a newer xcf it probably easier with that. Side note. For awhile beta dealers were able to tag their offroad bikes. I have a friend with a 300 two stroke he got titled when he bought it new.
Had a 09 tc510 was an awesome machine ran it hard in the dunes and on the street no major issues but when I did start to have trouble getting parts I shipped it and plan on picking up a new husqvarna thinking about getting the 300 2stroke because I have a 2stroke addiction and want to ride it in the woods as well and never had as much fun in the woods on 4 strokes!
A friend just bought a Honda Dominator real cheap, pulled off all the useless plastic, slapped on some road tyres, and kicked our butts in the mountain twisties. Most of us ride road bikes like the XJ6 or Hornets. He is fearless as a fall, and a few scrapes won't cost him a mortgage. And he can just practise his drifting without worries. Sometimes, I wonder about buying an old XR and converting it. It is best to go cheap and not worry about breaking stuff. Just like Space X, build cheap and blow stuff up, and learn fast.
Built mine out of a crf450R! Yeah it vibrates a lot and is older so kickstart only but all my friends that ride with me see me and try it out and realize why I love it. I picked up the 450 in dirt form for $1500, reset valves and cleaned the carb so did some time investment, but otherwise I think I got in super cheap
I made my yz450fx street legal. I have never had so much fun on a vehicle. I can rip it around town and ride it right up to the trails and motocross track. It’s an insane all around bike. It only costs me $75 a year for insurance.
Rims and fork to accommodate them are the difference. You can take a regular dirt bike with stock rims and get street tires that fit those rims. But these bikes have straight up street bike rims and tires. Which just won't fit on a dirt bike without major modifications.
full knobbies on the tarmac is the best thrill never a dull moment.. never would i bastardise a dirt bike with road slicks.. buy a road bike for that..
@@BornAGoon i surmise knee caps dont grow back.. one is supposed to grip bike with legs for best feel and control.. at 50 im NOT going to even consider rubbing my knee out on the road..😂😂
I put Avon Trailriders on my 17" Warp 9 wheels. They are good for "light" trail and excellent on the street. I lean it all the way to tire edges often. Best of luck!
Howdy guys. I am from South Africa. I actually went to my local KTM dealer earlier today (Dealers name is Race Worx), here in the Johannesburg area. They had a KTM SMC-R690 and a Husky 701 right there, on the floor. Needless to say, I drooled all over them. I own a Duke 2 640 LC4. Thinking of tossing the standard front fender and headlight and adding MX style on her. What keeps me from doing that is that she is absolutely mint! and has 6000Mi on the clock. Thanks for the video bud. I am also a die hard SM fellow!!
Husky factory 610sm , cr500 fully converted and plated and 280cc big bore xr250L in the garage and the factory 610sm gets the most seat time. Also had a svx550 was a monster but a nightmare to own
Like how you talked about the wr250 because it is exactly what I want to do to mine. Also have a wr400 with a 426 motor in it and both my 400/426 and the 250 are street legal, just need safety for it and be mint. All the wr motors are pretty much the yz motor cross bikes with taller ratio gears and they did some stuff with the CDI box but it's easy to delete the limiters or at least on the old carby ones.
If you plan to buy a bike wait for november- march.prices will drop, as dealers and people want to get rid of their old inventory. I bought a 690 smcr brand new for 9500USD(9000€) out of the door. At that price it is hard to beat. i have to say though at the current list price waay overpriced
I for 1 wheel always be riding wheelie machines 50yo , still acting like a fool. If your sumo ain't vertical or sideways? She isn't happy. Stay ( relatively) safe Keep smiling 🤪
I'm riding a Honda FMX650 since 2017, it has 57000 km on it and stil rides like it just surpassed 20k kilometres, it's just stupidly bulletproof. It's not a real sumo, but as Honda already stated it to be a funmoto, but to me it is a underpowered but bulletproof Supermoto. All the weight it has are worth all the supersport bikes I surpassed at the German Eifel. Its Supermoto fun with touring reliability. And those bikes are rare, even here in the EU.
1979 Yamaha XT 500 here. I have done dual sport rides with knobby’s. It is set up for street now. Not a high top speed, but great for twisty roads. I have embarrassed a few sport bikers a few times. Kind of like a mountain bike, with a motor.
My KTM 950 SM was one of the best bikes I have ever owned. Such a great bike. So many cool features on it like quick release connectors . I had a LV exhaust on it. The best part was it all black and menacing. I beat so many riders on Harleys it was down rite comical.
In the mid 90s I had a Honda NX650, I put a big bore kit on it along with TZR250 wheels. I changed the forks and put on an FZR disc and caliper. That bike was good fun but way too heavy.
Picked up an 80’ xl500r last month and I’d be lying if I said I don’t want to do the same. 😂
in italy we have a brand called TM racing that produces supermotards that are a great alternative to ktm because they build good quality handmade italian supermotards designed for that specifical type of riding at the same price or even less of a ktm and they are even street legal (according to Italian law)
Great bikes!
Too bad, we cannot buy them here. I would give it a spin. Ciao✌️
Every once and a while I see them here in the states. Beautiful bikes 👌👌👌

This year at age 37 I’ve started riding supermoto and enduro. I love it and regret not trying it 2 decades ago.
Thanks for watching
I started racing GNCC recently at 40. Why didnt I do this when I was young and pliable? 🤣😂

Thanks for watching
I have drz400s and thinking to buy 17 wheel set and convert is to sm or.. buy ktm 500 and fo the same. What can you recomend?

I have the same platform, just a 2020. Do you ever put your enduro wheels back on and head for trails?

70° husabergs are the absolute best supermotos you can have, and they are indestructable
Subbed
I just got a WR450 as my first bike this year and absolutely love it. No complaints it just preforms everywhere all the time
Do you have it in Supermoto trim or just dual sport or both
@@BornAGoon Both, currently in Supermoto. Love the video by the way! I’d love to get on a husky 701 someday and toy around with track days maybe
Soft limiter was 10,000 rpm and hard limiter was 12,000 rpm factory spec topping out at 167 kph in 5th gear.
the 550 is my dream bike
It's a rocketship." I love that reaction almost as much as the look of disappointment when I pull up on a "dual sport" to a sportbike ride.
the old 650 legend of a bike
Thank you. This is exactly the information I’ve be searching for. I have my first supermoto course coming up with SoCalSuoermoto and can’t wait!
I’ve never had to worry about engine lubrication during wheelies . But I can’t wheelie long 🤣
The first Honda you showed was the 650R or the big red pig(BRP) only water cooled XR...only made from 2000 to 2009 I believe truly a beast I loved owning and riding the shit out of it.
Yeah bro I’m a happy pig owner
Sweet I want to ride it lol
What did you change with the Versys suspension?
Omg the aprilia looks amazing.. very good video... keep up
So trick cant believe that thing is 12 years old
I daily a Ducati scrambler, but I miss my crf250l flat track.
There is a lot of self satisfaction from putting it together yourself and having a unique Moto. Best of Luck and enjoy the Hoon'ing
@@torytaylor693 very true, I built a 11 husaberg 450 fe sumo. Absolutely love the bike and it's my fav bike by far.
@@tjlovesrachelthe 500 is underpowered for the type of street riding I like to do
Yea it’s not great for the dirt like the 500 but for me personally I like the power range of the 701 for street
I’ve ridden the 500 exc and you have to do a lot of gearing changes to make it more suitable for highway riding.
What I wish I would’ve done is bought the 701E instead of the 701SM though because you can’t wheel swap the 701SM due to the brake and fork setup
So the 701E would’ve been a better buy for doing both street and dirt
I built mine from an EBR-1190sx. Then I got into electric unicycles. What a beautiful ride I had today (44 mph, 13 miles).
I built a 2001 xr650l supermoto, its bored out with a big cam and full exhaust. Full warp 9 elite rim setup with wave rotors. Its a ton of fun!
wow that sounds like a fun bike
1986 Yamaha IT465 Great big gas tank good power good top end headlight 2 stroke great bar hopper!
I had a steel frame WR450f (2005) a while back and it was a riot. Have a drz400sm now.
The L and R bikes share no parts whatsoever.
yea it was hard to find good images of the 650L in sumo trim Most of those older conversions were the 650R Alot of the XR400s kept coming up too
@@derekjooste9339 you are right and wrong....the bike in the image is not the 650 R IT IS 600 R ...650R IS LIQUID COOLED BIG RED PIG ...LOL THAT BIKE SHARES THE SAME ENGINE AND MANY PARTS WITH THE L VERSION. FYI.
@@crashalexander7232 I just double checked, if you pause the video you can see the radiator, the 650R on the seat and radiator shrouds and I checked the lines of the bike again. It looks a lot like the 02 650R I used to own.
But yes, I've heard that the 650L is based on the 600R.
Also, there are no cooling fins on the motor that I can see.
I'm 63... Riding all my life...and I want one lol
This exact one you're talking about is my first ever bike. I learned to ride on that thing. And yes, i think it's perfect.
Loving this channel!
Thank you
Bro have you ever seen tm motards? They are made in Italy! They make 2 strokes and 4 strokes, from 85 cc up to 500 cc if I don't get it wrong. In Italy it is a really famous manufacturer, especially whit the 2 stroke 125 cc motards, made with carburetors or with fuel injection, bought primarily from 16 yo with 15 hp, modified up to 30 hp per wheel and having only 100 kg of weight
I have one of these Aprilia SXV 550s here in Vegas. The fun factor is beyond nuts. Wouldn't get rid of it for anything.
That kawi commercial was shot at my local kart track, thats dope. Its a fun track
Keep em comin mate, love the vids.
Stay sumo✌
At the end of the day get what you can get :)
The older husky 450/550 bikes had some transmission issues.
Had a 09 tc510 was an awesome machine ran it hard in the dunes and on the street no major issues but when I did start to have trouble getting parts I shipped it and plan on picking up a new husqvarna thinking about getting the 300 2stroke because I have a 2stroke addiction and want to ride it in the woods as well and never had as much fun in the woods on 4 strokes!
sweet thanks for watching
My KTM vibrated like hell to but I didnt care
iv got a 22 CRF450r-s I'm really contemplating on converting to a SM
Excellent video, brilliant production, compliments!
Many thanks!
I made my yz450fx street legal. I have never had so much fun on a vehicle. I can rip it around town and ride it right up to the trails and motocross track. It’s an insane all around bike. It only costs me $75 a year for insurance.
As always, no matter the topic, you are entertaining and humorous! Love the videos man, keep it up!
Thank you I appreciate the kind words
I own a 2003 wr450f sumo street legal and fully built out and yz tuned and he is right the wr is an amazing platform to sumo
thanks for watching and taking the time to comment
Aprillia was the best looking and best sounding bike
I raced supermoto when they came out. Friend of me had a factory 450 in 2006/2007
Rims and fork to accommodate them are the difference. You can take a regular dirt bike with stock rims and get street tires that fit those rims. But these bikes have straight up street bike rims and tires. Which just won't fit on a dirt bike without major modifications.
In NC the vin designates whether a vehicle is streetable. So you're limited to pre-built ones, and I got a 2019 DRZ because of that.
full knobbies on the tarmac is the best thrill never a dull moment.. never would i bastardise a dirt bike with road slicks.. buy a road bike for that..
lol I agree Next video is " can I drag knee with a knobby "
@@BornAGoon i surmise knee caps dont grow back.. one is supposed to grip bike with legs for best feel and control.. at 50 im NOT going to even consider rubbing my knee out on the road..😂😂
I put Avon Trailriders on my 17" Warp 9 wheels. They are good for "light" trail and excellent on the street. I lean it all the way to tire edges often. Best of luck!
That 550 SXV has the best sound ever! its insane with an aftermarket system
CR 500 chassis, overbored 750F, Metzler's. It was stupid fun.
Thanks for watching
At that price it is hard to beat. i have to say though at the current list price waay overpriced
just picked up a '23 smcr , pretty good deal. Lovin it !!
coming off a speed triple
I absolutely loved this video! SUMO for life!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I for 1 wheel always be riding wheelie machines
50yo , still acting like a fool.
If your sumo ain't vertical or sideways?
She isn't happy.
Stay ( relatively) safe
Keep smiling 🤪
supermoto riders = super riders - end of story, we are literally the best
Best eva
Power to weight ratio is unparalleled
which is awesome, except for those windy highway trips...😔
I'm riding a Honda FMX650 since 2017, it has 57000 km on it and stil rides like it just surpassed 20k kilometres, it's just stupidly bulletproof. It's not a real sumo, but as Honda already stated it to be a funmoto, but to me it is a underpowered but bulletproof Supermoto. All the weight it has are worth all the supersport bikes I surpassed at the German Eifel. Its Supermoto fun with touring reliability. And those bikes are rare, even here in the EU.
Love your videos Goon. Thank you
You've missed a few used street legal ones - Husky 610 & 630, Yamaha 660, BMW 650 etc
1979 Yamaha XT 500 here. I have done dual sport rides with knobby’s. It is set up for street now. Not a high top speed, but great for twisty roads. I have embarrassed a few sport bikers a few times. Kind of like a mountain bike, with a motor.
Still miss my Husaberg FS570. I had the Husaberg race map loaded and installed a FMF pipe and good god that thing was a 6 speed rocket!
I love supermotos. Subbed!
I have 2 groms right now that are both like mini-sumos. They're so much fun, they're like a heavy bmx bike. Lol
My KTM 950 SM was one of the best bikes I have ever owned. Such a great bike. So many cool features on it like quick release connectors . I had a LV exhaust on it. The best part was it all black and menacing. I beat so many riders on Harleys it was down rite comical.
sadly KTM prices went up so crazy up that nobody can afford prebuild SMC bike now.
Wutt I can plate my yz450f if I put 100$ into lights
In the mid 90s I had a Honda NX650, I put a big bore kit on it along with TZR250 wheels. I changed the forks and put on an FZR disc and caliper. That bike was good fun but way too heavy.
I’m buying a Drz this winter, hopefully find a good deal but also willing to spend 6-7k to get what I want
You are going to have a great winter
Very cool. I like the comparison with the UFC.
Thanks bro! Awesome video!!
Thank you
