Removing Power Cord garbage disposal

  • NOTE: Some people are able to squeeze the tabs and pull the piece out without cutting the metal. Also wire cutters are not tin snips they won't work well. You can cut the old wires and use some wire caps to attach the old to new wires.
    Removing Power Cord from old garbage disposal to use on a replacement unit. This was done on an insinkerator badger 1.

    Thanks for posting,
    Anyone else without tin snips. The plug is compression fit. If you just press it to one side and massage it back out of the hole, it works fine and is much faster.

    This was helpful, but probably not quite how the poster intended. Once I saw how the cord was kept in place, I managed to press the tabs from inside and remove it. For the one closest to the opening, I used a regular scredriver. For the one further away, I found a right angle screw-driver to be quite helpful. Press that one first, and once it's started press the easier one and it pops out. Thanks for the visual!

      Same here!! Used an Allen wrench for the far one

    • @scubarojo
      @scubarojo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Your right, even a pair of needle nose pliers will help depress those tabs from the inside, and between wiggling and prying with a flat bladed screwdriver, the plug will come out, and then can be used on your new disposal. Again thanks to the poster for the visual so we know the "lay of the land". No need to buy snips, and you'd have to work hard to cut through that metal. I'm planning on making a pitch-back with the old motor.

    All u have to use it a pair of Curved Needle nose and you can pinch it and it comes right out. Then you do not need to compromise the housing. Those are a great tool to have in your kit.

    With your video, I was able to get the cord out without needing to cut the metal base. Since the tabs are what are keeping it in place, I used a zip tie. I ran it around the three wires to form the loop. Left it loose to be able to make it all the way up to the tabs. Once there, I tightened it up and the cord was able to come up with the tabs no longer spread out. It will only come up just enough to have the tabs come through, then with a flat blade screw driver, push the zip tie down and the cord will come out all the way. Then cut the black and white wires as long as possible and you're ready to use that cord again.

    I was trying to twist and yank the cord loose with my Channel Lok pliers when I decided to see how others tackled the task. Your video was very helpful. My tin snips were not up to the job, and I got tired of trying to pry the tabs loose as mentioned in some of the comments, so I used a mini-hacksaw to cut through the metal and then visegrips to pry the ends back. Success!

  • @Edomsharp9

    I didn't have tin snips, and had trouble trying to press in the tab furthest away from the opening. So I removed the long screws holding the whole unit together (the ones you see the end of on the bottom), which required long-nosed pliers due to a funky screw head type, and some PB Blaster to loosen one of the ends rusted in to the base. Once the long screws are removed, you can pry off the base using a screwdriver twisting in between the base edge and the unit. And once you get the base off, you have full-access to use long-nosed pliers to press in the tabs and remove the power cord.

    • @jjsjohnson1
      @jjsjohnson1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bingo. This is the easiest solution to the problem assuming you have a torx socket that fits the screw head on hand. Like you, I could not get the tabs in far enough using the suggested strategies and it felt wrong to tun snip a brand new Badger. The bottom base came off easier than I expected.

Even though the wires can be reused, i think the cords were designed to get stuck within the disposal unit so that customers didn't have option other than to buy. Well, i refused to pay for additional wires when i could use an existing one. Thanks to this video.

    Thanks for the video. I had to use the tin snips too. It really is ridiculous that they took all the time to figure out how to make the cord a one time use thing. Maybe it is to make a few bucks for the cord kit which is infuriating for the customer. We either have to head back to the store or tear it apart. It could have easily been made as a reusable easy to remove part.

    Thank you for uploading this Video which gave me an idea to remove without using snips. Here it is -
    1. Removed all long screws.
    2. Turned disposal around as in your first image.
    3. Using hammer tapped all edges(hitting multiple times) to loosen the plate binding the body frame.
    4. Used flat head screw driver and worked out from one end to flip open the plate apart.
    5. Narrowed down the teeth which locks the power chord and pulled it out from the plate.
    Then I have it. I can reuse the same cord on my new garbage disposal.

    I drilled a hole in the garbage disposal on the other side of the tab and used a pointed screw driver to push on the tab to pull out the one side. Be careful not to drill through into the actual socket. Just drill enough to get a hole open and line it up around where the tab should be.
