Holy smokes, it worked!! I am NOT the best handyman - If I can do this, anyone can! My disposal looked rough - I gave it a 10% chance this would actually work. Once the epoxy fully dried and installed everything back together, there were a couple drips. After day 3, nothing dripped again! And, it was pretty cool to dig into the workings of a garbage disposal, this was new territory for me. Thank you for this video, I really appreciate it!!
Ok, so I took out the disposal no problem. Separated the two parts by removing 4 bolts. I cleaned and brushes as instructed. I was able to see about 3 little holes. I bought the seal as instructed and applied it. Let it sit for like 8 hours was sealed and dry. I filled the sink up twice, issued the drain a few times.. I saved over $100 by doing this..doesn’t take too much time at all and is worth it. Thanks for the vid man!
Good info. You were right about the crack. I followed step by step instructions. One detail left out, in my experience, after the disposal is reinstalled don’t be alarmed if it still leaks. You may need to purge the remaining water that is sitting in the bottom of the disposal.
Thanks for the video, and thank you for showing the public how to fix a leaking garbage disposal that's leaking water from the bottom. And I always wondered why plumbers always look so tired, I never thought that their job is so draining 🤣
This is exactly where my Badger disposal is leaking. Thank you SO much for getting straight to the point and showing us how to fix it, including the warning about putting too much spot on the sides! God bless you! I just subscribed and loved the joke, hahaha!
Thanks. I followed the instructions step by step and i was able to repait my disposal for a few bucks. A brand new one cost $130 so that's much cheaper :)
Really helpful, followed these instructions and had my garbage disposal disassembled in 15 minutes. Unfortunately I don’t think JB Weld is going to fix mine for longer than a couple months, so I’m getting a new garbage disposal anyway. But now I know how to troubleshoot it in the future
This was exactly what was wrong with mine. Took longer for the JB weld to dry than anything else. Minus that dry time, this was about a 45 min job. Thank you!!!
I'm in the middle of working on this. I couldn’t get the hose clamp off, so I unscrewed the long screws, removed the bottom part, and found just three small holes. I filled them up and am now waiting for everything to dry. I’m pretty handy but not a pro-if this works, I’ll have only spent $11 on JB Weld and a metal brush! Once it’s all dry, I’ll reassemble everything and report back! 🙌
Heck yeah that was helpful. I thought it was just a gasket that needed to be replaced. It's actually corroding from all the food and bacteria. JB weld is amazing stuff. Great video! I think I will just buy anew one though
Thank you for making this video. I was able to repair the disposal without any issues. I simplified the steps by just removing the section that needed fixing (where water drops came from ). Thanks for suggesting the 5mm wrench worked like a charm.
I would only recommend this fix if you are tight on money. It is a temporary fix for the same reason autobody mechanics dont like to repair rusty side panels on a car/truck. Once the rust has formed, it will continue rusting, and whatever you coated the metal with will flake off. I always recommend paying more for the higher grade models with stainless steel internals and a longer manufacturer warranty. And btw, plumbers from get tired from having to change garbage disposal’s. Those jobs are easy! We get tired from digging trenches, crawling and working in tight crawlspaces, and moving heavy bulky plumbing appliances and fixtures! We don’t take it personal though haha
I totally agree, this "fix" will take even more time than just replacing the garbage disposal and will be extremely temporary at best. The only good idea in this video is to put a bucket under a leaking garbage disposal until you get around to fixing it.
If we were talking about a furnace or a roof or a a A/C unit by all means try to extend its life, all that stuff is thousands of dollars but a disposal? I'm with you, just replace it and if there is no money just run a straight pipe,we dont really need a disposal, if its big enough it can go in the trash, if its tiny it will go down the drain, i have a sister that think the disposal is some kind of garbage can,I'm always getting on her case about it,lol. Reason I'm here is because ive never had one leak before and i had no clue what they looked like inside, after seeing this nastiness I'm buying a new one tomorrow, ha ha ha
Not a bad idea. How long do you think will the apoxy last? I'm pretty sure it's not as hard as the original metal. I have a similar problem that just developed on my disposal that is nearly 30 years old. I think in my case it's just best to replace the unit.
Great video and not any time wasting fluff. With all the corrosion, it looks like a great fix to buy some time. I am amazed that these units are so corrosion prone but that is the way they reach into your pockets and make more money.
Would recommend just buying a new one. The amount of work will be more than installing a new one and you're prone to it breaking again. This is an EXCELLENT video that shows damage to a Garbage Disposal over long term use. Thanks for making it.
Hi. Yes if you think it will be better to purchase a new one I would absolutely recommend that over fixing it. I made this video so if someone who find it too expensive to replace it can do this. 😃
Hi Don, the external plastic casing of an E20 in my place has cracked and there appears to have water come out, my wife told me it happened a few times and she just wipes it up. It is not regular. Would the same process work fine for the outside? I understand taking it apart to apply the epoxy until it sets would work best.
I was in tears today after hearing the first quote to get a disposal replaced --- THREE to FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS! Got a 2nd quote from Anthony's Plumbing that was over NINE HUNDRED!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you f'ing kidding me??? - going to do this DIY - will let you know. Fixed! $15 for the epoxy - God Bless You!
Mine is connected to the dishwasher next to it and we've had it since we built the house on 2015 so should we just replace it or try this and if we wanted to do away with it instead and just have a plain pipe underneath hiw would we do that. Thanks
I recommend cleaning the inside of the disposal before you start. This will help clean the crack area somewhat so you so not have to brush so much to find the crack. Turn the disposal on with some cold water running through it. Do not use hot or warm water. Get one cup of ice cubes. Put one cube at a time in the disposal. Do not add the second cube until the first cube is chewed up. Repeat for all the cubes in the cup. When out of cubes, turn off disposal and then turn off water. This process a couple of times a year will help disposal not the smell, especially in warmer climates.
Question... what happens if the garbage disposal is leaking and the water isn't draining properly. Does this mean something is stopping the flow of water through the garage disposal??
As a 40+ year plumber, these garborators should NEVER be used without an intercepter in place, garbage belongs in the garbage, not in your drainage systems, these will plug your drains and cost you dearly, even restaurants require interseptors by code! just think about it for a minute! NO FOOD WASTE DOWN ANY DRAINS, EVEN THE TOILET, SAME RESULT!
Mine started leaking. I agree that we shouldn’t be putting food down the sink for all the reasons you stated. I want to get rid of mine completely. Is this a do it yourself job at all?

Leave a bowl under the disposal and run the disposal a few times because there may be wqter sitting in the bottom of the disposal.
