Destiny 2 Lore - Is Nezarec really dead after Root of Nightmares? Or will he return?

  • Destiny 2's Lore and Story from the Root of Nightmares Raid seems to raise the question of whether or not Nezarec is truly dead. Nezarec's Acolyes seem to believe that the Disciple of the Witness will rise again and have been working for a long time to bring about his return regardless of what happens in the raid. Today we're going to ask that question and examine if Nezarec is really dead or if he might one day return.

I am reminded of a goal of Oryx: to become Axiomatic with Death. Wherever there is Death, there would be Oryx, and wherever Oryx was, there would be Death.
I wonder if Oryx was inspired by Nezarec. Perhaps Nezarec succeeded in this goal, to become Axiomatic with Pain.

I feel like if people still have trauma or fears about Nezarec, he will continue to live on through the minds of those he terrified. Reminds me of how Mithrax said Skiira the watcher ceased to terrorize Riis once people stopped paying it any attention. Nezarec doesn't necessarily need a body to live.

But when you read about the descriptions of Nezarec presence , and went into a place with respawn restriction, it seems to line up a bit TOO perfectly. And when you view the lore as those areas being "darkness zones" which the darkness overwhelm or "chewed up" the light so bad AFTER the collapse, which we know Nezarec to have been around for the collapse, that the light can't burn there.

@@davef4214 Maybe. I’d like to see him return in a different form. The model for him in the raid is not as a pictured him. But, that was when his body had been transformed by the powers of Light and Darkness in conflict within him. He very well could be the next “big bad” after this saga concludes. In many ways, he contrasts well as the antithesis of all the the Coalition stand against and fight for: hope, survival, peace, love, unity, and maybe eventually, the profession of thriving in a second Golden Age post the death of the Witness. Him being pain and fear personified would aim to undo any short age of peace we’d build in Sol after the war. He’d wake up maybe two or three years later, see how much Sol had thrived after the destruction of the Black Fleet, all the minions of the Witness, and it, and see a system ripe for tragedy and desolation. He’s a great candidate to taunt and discourage Guardians, he could use his Nightmares to torture all of Sol. He’s diffidently a universal threat that could play the role of an overarching villain. But, I’ve no doubt we may hunt down the rest of the Worm Gods and liberate Torobatal from the Hive in two other separate future expansions. Theres many directions Bungie can go after Final Shape, Nezarec is too good of a villain not to return. His voice, the enthusiasm he generates in the fear felt by others. It’s as if Freddy Krueger and The Scarecrow were mixed together in the personality of an eldritch Lovecraftian god. Him taking different forms, if he were to return, would make him a great villain on the level of Savathun. I hope we see him again.

I have no doubt he comes back honestly, he's too thematically impactful to not come back at some point. Back to Xivu too, I'd very much like to fight her and her brood. It kinda makes sense. As lightbearers, we are physically reborn but not mentally/memory-wise. Darkness-based entities may be able to be reborn mentally/via memory but cannot reform themselves physically.
Even Rhulk tried to remake himself by overtaking another’s body if you look at the Vow raid sparrow. His mind lived on, but not his body.

  • @lilwindingo1100
    @lilwindingo1100 ปีที่แล้ว +18

I’d honestly be more concerned if he didn’t come back. For all we know his original power is still out there, perhaps tucked away in remnants of his relics, or transferred to Osiris from the darkness tea…
Also quick thought, what if the ghost Rhulk captured and talked to and tried to force to give him the light was taken over not by the traveler, but the Witness? And forced to self destruct. After the Lightfall campaign we know the witness has the ability to take over ghosts.

    • @anotter321

Is a good theory. It fits really well. I would imagine the witness had a plan that invovled Rhulk getting sealed away. A plan that is part of a larger plan involving us, the Player.

@@garrettviewegh677 If/when we get Destiny 3, Nezarec could make for a great Year 1 antagonist. Something, something, "I feasted upon the delicious pain caused by your last battles against the Witness, and will use the power I gained from it all to do what the Witness couldn't do: destroy Guardians in mind, body, and spirit." Imagine being able to find, enter, loot, and then destroy every single Tomb of Nezarec, with some choice commentary from our buddy Drifter particularly with the Fourth Tomb. That could be great fun.
Or maybe he'd be a good Year 2 villain, so Year 1 could focus on helping Caiatl reconquer Torobatl. Whatever form it would take, going outside the Sol system to have adventures would be spectacular. Retake Torobatl, have a raid on 2082 Volantis, plumb the depths of lost Athenaeum Worlds, learn more about the origins of the Leviathan (either Calus' exile ship, the creature that fought the Hive Worm Gods, or both), search for relics of the Ecumene...there are a lot of loose threads throughout the lore that we could tug on.

@@justinchamberlin4195 Maybe. I’ve envisioned that after the Witness, it’s fleets, and it’s followers are all killed, Sol will know a new Golden Age of peace and prosperity. With the ending of the Final Shape transitioning the narrative beyond Sol. The system would be peaceful with very few enemies within to fight, while Guardians and some Coaltion allies would travel with us in the Helm beyond Sol to protect those beyond under the threat of the Hive, Nezarec and his followers, or maybe a new enemy. But, it may not be retitled Destiny 3. Bungie’s stated they won’t do a Destiny 3, rather a continuation in the same game, into new stories in a new saga, rather than creating a whole new game.

So just like with Xivu Arath last season (and to an extent with the great Ahamkara hunt), while doing what we do to survive and protect, we are also (unintentionally) worshiping Nezarec, Furthermore, a part of Nezarec may reside within Osiris, depending on exactly how Misraaks made the poition that revived him.

First off, love your stuff, and thank you for explaining the lore in-depth and/or simplifying it for guardians like myself.
Two things here that stand out for me. The phrase "Every man has two deaths. When he is buried in the ground and the last time someone says their name". Second, Wes Craven's Nightmare on Elm Street. Freddy Krueger would gain more power from the people that would remember him and he would attack through nightmares. . . .
Nostalgia might be kicking in, but I believe Nezarec and Freddy Krueger are one in the same.
    Splicing has a 80s trend vibe as well . . . . Just sayin'

Dungeon/ Raid Lair idea: A damaged Pyramid arrives on Earth with whatever remains of Nezerac onboard. A ritual conducted by Shadow Legion Psions has managed to revive Nezerac, albeit at a weaker, damaged state after R.O.N. His presence on Earth cause severe nightmares and day terrors for the people in the EDZ and the Last City, as well as some of those in the Tower, which alerts them of his arrival. The Vanguard was able to find out a way to permanently kill Nezerac, preventing any further ressurections by using Pryamid artifacts from the Lunar Pyramid and some stuff collected after Root of Nightmares.
In 3 or 4 very short, maybe easy missions, you collect these artifacts, which then unlocks access to the Dungeon/Raid Lair.
You and two others (or just you) are tasked to enter Pyramid, which is expanded and enhanced for fit a dungeon and stop the ritual, as well as permanently killing Nezerac. He will be withered and not at hisheightt of power, but still very much a threat.
Taking inspiration from Duality, his boss fight will be set up like this: his health will be split in 4. Two of the smaller bars will be him being protected by Psion, which you have to damage and then kill in between the first two phases. After the Psions are dead, Nezarec will be vulnerable. The next two phases will be of just him with the final phas, which will be Nezarec in an enchanced Torment form. After killing him, the Pyramid tech we needed will be used to destroy the remains permanently, thus truly killing the Final God of Pain.

    1. What that Eliksni experienced in that lore tab (blinking and ending up in a different time and place), didn't Eris experience the same thing in her search for Nezarec? Is it possible that her mind could be infiltrated by Nezarec? Or is she still protected by the ritual she did with the Crown of Sorrows? What's her role on all this? Where did she go? What's she up to?
    2. Is it possible that Dredgen Yor/ Rezyl Azzir made contact with Nezarec when he went into the depths of the moon?

My best guess is nezeracs cult will find out nezerac was revived physically and we killed him which will whip the cult into a frenzy. The body parts form plunder are still in our keeping so I wonder if the cultist are able to get those parts back could they revive a more powerful nezerac?
I could see nezerac wanting to take some revenge on savathun and us so he starts manipulating actions and gets his cult to move the body parts to a ritual space and can be revived to take revenge

I wrote my theory on Nezarec on the last video, so this time I wanna focus on one line that stands out to me.
In, Of Hated Nezarec, they talk about how he is an end of a way. I can’t think of anything else it would be referring to but the Final Shape. Which means that there might be many paths to achieving the Final Shape and his Acolytes believe that he has achieved “the end” or Final Shape status. We know that the sword logic likes simplicity. What could be more simple and more effective than fear?
Perhaps the other Disciples of the Witness represented other forms of simplistic destructive effectiveness? Perhaps the Final Shape is either: not a physical being at all but an idea, or, a physical being that represents that idea so fully as to be indistinguishable from it. After all, we do also know that Oryx wanted to be “wherever death was”.
We have Death and Fear, both simple and effective. They destroy and render ineffective and they take a great amount of effort to overcome.

Your theory does hold some credit, but I think its much similar to how our light level increases rather than a duration of time kinda thing.
It would also explain why I imagine Savathun was such a threat, as she got the highest light level at the time of Witch queen ontop of her current darkness light level based antics.
It would also explain why she bodied Nezarec. Its an interesting thing to think about.

What if it is Byf's mind that Nezarec is haunting as a bit of fourth wall breaking, hence the reason for making this video? Nezarec is allowed to linger in the memories of our Guardians because we the players are the ones remembering him. We the players are the ones replaying the raid, keeping Nezarec "alive" just to be killed and farmed for loot, such as Conditional Finality. It's sort of like how Oryx became an immortal embodiment of the Sword Logic as a result of us crafting Touch of Malice. Had we not done that, this wouldn't have come to pass. Same goes with Xol and Whisper of the Worm. These enemies are becoming immortal through the players' actions. Nezarec's finality is "conditional" (deliberate word choice) upon people forgetting who he is, including us the players.
Up until Lightfall, we (as a community) all genuinely believed Nezarec to be dead, and we wouldn't have been aware of Nezarec whispering to us unless we wielded gear touched by his influence, though as awareness of his existence grew, so too did Nezarec's sphere of influence. Nezarec was being revived long before the raid, simply by speaking his name. So long as we keep talking about Nezarec, he will never die.
The way to kill a god is not with the sword, but by starving it of prayers and forgetting it ever existed, so unfortunately, it is people like Byf who ensure Nezarec's immortality.

Nezarec's final death most likely will come from savathûn.
I mean even a blind man can see she will be resurrected, and once she is resurrected she is going to use the light in combination of her deception skills to make some sort of forget spell that every living being in the universe forgets Nezarec.

Another thing that points to the idea of Nezarec still being alive is specifically *when* his final piece of dialogue plays. Compared to someone like Rhulk, who says his final “Witness… forgive me!” line as he dies, Nezarec specifically talks *after* he dies. The only other character to talk like this has been riven, a character who is part of a species well known to be able to still interact with and influence the world well after their deaths.

Considering he’s become synonymous with fear itself, and he seems to exist as long as there is fear, and he is remembered, perhaps the only way to ensure his final, complete death, is to destroy every scrap of Nezarec, and find a way to erase the memories of him from everyone that’s known him, erasing the Final God of Pain from reality. But, it would be great to have him as the next big bad for the next saga after Final Shape, or a future expansion. He’s such and interesting villain.
