The Byrds were the greatest American rock band. Created two vital rock genres, had a unique and hugely influential sound, made a series of astoundingly great albums over six years, created some of the most beautiful music of the rock era.
@@kmslegal7808 Yeah, I hope to be able to see and meet him live one day. On top of being such a stellar musician and storyteller, he is also enormously articulate. I love hearing him being interviewed.
What amazes me is that so many folk tunes were a large part of their repertoire. The public stil loved trad and contemporary folk but they were clearly ready for new interpretations. Their inclusion of I Stand At Every Door is one few recording of this incredible anti war song from a childs view who was burned to death at Hiroshima.
Listening to this beautiful tune by my favourite 60s group almost sixty years after the golden summer of 66. I'd just bought that album and was getting ready for a new stage of my life, starting first year at university and wondering what lay in store there for me! Ah, the memories! As Wordsworth wrote, "bliss it was that time to be alive, but to be young was very heaven"
Although the tune is probably old Scottish, this song Wild Mountain Thyme was written in Belfast, Northern Ireland by William McPeake in 1957. The McPeake family made the first recording in their home in 1957.

Way to go Tom. Couldn't put it any better, when i think of going back, on go my Byrds albums close my eyes and float away to 65. Soundtrack of my life. Stay safe
Yes! I was thinking the same thing. Very eastern. Now I know where Harrison got those strings in Within You Without You. I thought it was George Martin's genius. Nope, this was the inspiration...
When I was a kid, I knew I'd love this song before I'd even heard it, just from the title lol. And I still love it. As a Byrds fanatic (of the original 5, or 4 members, that is), I like this version just a bit more than the non-string alternative. The strings do compliment the song. I think Allen Stanton, who arranged the strings, really "got" what the Byrds were doing with WMT. If the song could've been recorded and mixed on modern equipment, I doubt there'd be a controversy. I love Crosby's "in and out" harmony and the "mmmms" during the instrumental. Beautiful. The Byrds...what a band!
I agree Wayne, got a copy of 5D when it came out got round to Mountain stopped me dead in my tracks, blown away back then and still am every time I play it
I remember when this album was released. I didn't get every album I liked but I had to get The Byrds, The Beatles, The Ventures and a few more. Great memories and a great arrangement of an old Celtic song.

The Byrds created and performed Beautiful music; more beautiful imho than The Beatles; just not as much. The songwriting of Gene Clark. The guitar and arrangements of Jim McGuinn. The harmonies of David Crosby. Yes and the bass and drum playing of Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke. These are the simple ingredients that made The Byrds so originally unique from other music. I will always cherish this special band !
Please add Chris Hillman's songs, starting on the next album, Younger Than Yesterday. These along with recordings by Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield) and Gram Parsons are the beginnings of country rock.
This should be Scotlands national anthem Not that dirge and inferiority complex ridden that is flower of Scotland its actually a weed This is about love and longing and not the constant harking back to fighting The English how sterile and pathetic it is Lets be upbeat and celebrate the Romance and Romantic aspect of this beautiful wee country This version is sublime 😍
Yeah it's all true enough but it was inevitable. Look at what Crosby did to Gene Clark because he didn't like flying. Besides we would have never known the exquisite harmonies that were CSNY IF Crosby had stayed. Particularly David Crosby and Graham Nash. Personally, I think David Crosby has one of the best voices in rock 'n' roll.
I found them jarring when they entered. I actually never had this album, so it's taken me all this time to hear it. Have heard other versions of the song. Guess the record company felt it necessary to "improve" what the band was doing.
I'm a fan of the Byrds but this is not my favorite- maybe because of the strings. I think this would be good with just the 12 string and the vocal harmonies, no other accompaniment.
Dr Robert agreed- but check out the "alternate version" of this song that is available in mono without the orchestration. Sounds a lot better. Great song.
This is the first time I've heard it with the strings...imagine my disgust! These stupid string arrangements ruined many a recording in the 60s. If you've ever heard of Rodriguez his entire career was killed because producers imposed orchestras on his records....it just dates the music terribly. Almost as bad as Linn Drums in the 80s.
.....this is AWFUL, way too much guitar work!!! (12-string guitar is overpowering), way too many multiple singers???, and also incorporating orchestral string-arrangements!?!.....this classic, delicate Irish/Scot folk song listening experience is best appreciated either by sole acoustic guitar Joan Baez (1965), or the original with the uilleann pipes and harps by The McPeake Family (1960).....

Roger make his 12 string Rick almost sound like bagpipes, fitting.
Sal Desiano Thought I was the only one...the words just all fit together...pleasant journeys to you kind heart...
And his great vocals too
It is not surprise, he has Irish ancestors.
His 12 string sounded like bagpipes on the previous song , 5D too ! So great these guys were !
On a different level altogether.

The Byrds lost a great vocalist when they forces David Crosby out.
Edward Moore yeah but Crosby forced himself out really.
