- The best bait choices for winter creek fishing are explored in this video. This video will help you understand which baits work best for winter creek fishing and how to choose the right bait for to help you land more bass during the winter. I put some time & energy into this video to help educate new anglers who are looking to learn how to fish creeks during the winter. I hope you like it, and find it informative.
The question is...can you catch bass in smaller creeks in the winter? Of course you can, but a few simple mistakes could be the difference in Fishing or Catching. I have been working on the Winter Quest series for the past 3 seasons now, and my goal is to give you tips and techniques how to improve your chances of catching creek bass in the winter. Small creeks in winter throughout Tennessee can be really hard to fish, but I have caught up to 27 smallmouth bass in one given day, in the middle of winter. Different types of streams may produce different results, but if you love creek fishing and you are up for a challenge, a new Winter Quest season has begun! Come along for the fun and let's learn together. Stay tuned for more episodes of Winter Quest. #KCustomRods #NedWacky.com #FishSmack #WinterQuest #TennesseeCreekFishing #Smallmouth #Bass

This should be required viewing for those fishing creeks in the winter. Applies to spotted/AL bass as well . One of the better videos I have watched. 💯
Thank you so much Dennis, I can't tell you how much I appreciate that. Winter creek fishing will make you appreciate those spring and fall months. Thanks again for stopping by. Have a safe and Happy New Year.
Maybe the best winter creek fishing tutorial that I have seen! Excellent👏👏👏
Mr. Kevin, your check is in the MAIL! Thank buddy for the kind words. Have a safe and Happy New Year!
@ Happy New Year !🎆
I've witnessed Trey first hand he is pretty much the man when it comes to winter creek fishing. Great upload bud
But...I know that you can do the same. I've seen you pull out some big ones in winter! Happy New Year brother!
Thank you for this video. I’m relatively new to this kind of fishing. And I watch a lot of TH-cam videos and you explained your theory behind the short strike better than any I’ve heard. Again I appreciate it.
You are very welcome my friend! I'm glad that it helped you understand the short strikes, but I'm glad you used the term "theory", because if it does not work, I could be a snake oil salesman! LOL! I'm Trey by the way. Thank you for checking out the video. Have a safe and Happy New Year.
Amazing episode Trey. Bravo 👏
Thank you Mr. Greg! I appreciate that very much! I'm trying to follow your lead!
Enjoy your weekend
Thank you, you too Dave! Be safe buddy.
@@fishsmack Same to you
Great info on winter fishing!
Little different than my normal videos. I'm trying to talk more tips than just cutting up in the creek. Be safe out there on those rails! Have a Happy New Year!
Great Video Trey , good job explaining things.
Tonya got a kick out of the bad hair day Trey that popped up in corner of screen 😂
I always like to keep my hat on to cover up my beautiful head of hair! LOL!
I appreciate that B-Mac. I am trying to help get people hooked on winter fishing. I just got back from the creek. Our creeks are running pretty hard after 2 days of rain, but I was surprised to get 5 pretty quickly. They were on the outside of the current.
Now this is the way to do the creeks.. Great video bud.
Thank you Mr. Matt! Happy New Year to you brother! How are you doing? I hope everybody is doing well.
It's always nice when you put out a G rated fishing video. Good advice Trey👍
I'm right there with you, Mr. Ryan! I contemplated shutting down the comments to avoid any "Faction B" dirty talk. We have kids on here. I don't know what they would have said, but I'm sure they would have ventured into the Rated "R" territory pretty quickly.
Icicles sure looked cool. Nice tips, my friend.
Happy New Year to you Mr.John! I hope this year brings you and your family many blessing!
Downsizing is the key to get winter bites. I found this out last winter at a local neighborhood pond. I figured the bass were going to be tough to catch after a a week of really colder than normal weather so I just took an ultralight rod and some small 2 - 2-1/2 inch crappie baits just looking for some panfish to bite. Started fishing around a runoff from an upper pond to a lower pond and had the best winter fishing day ever. Five bass between 15 - 18 inches and three 12 - 13 inch crappie in an hour and a half. Since then, I will not bring anything bigger than a 3 inch bait when I go out in the winter and I have not gotten skunked since I started downsizing my baits.
You nailed it! Downsizing is definitely a key factor, and you figured it out firsthand! That's awesome. Experience is sometimes the best teacher. I hope you are doing well and good luck this winter! Be safe out there.
Great video, I appreciate your advice and presentation! Keep it up !
Thank you so much Tom! I greatly appreciate you stopping by. I'm finishing up the next episode as we speak. Happy New Year to you, and be safe out there.
New sub!! Good stuff!!
Thanks for subscribing! I greatly appreciate that Matt! What state are you located in?
@ Cincinnati Ohio
Very nice!
You two should get together Trey and do a collaboration. Matt's a great dude
That would awesome! Matt just teamed up with KCustomRods. I think Kevin is working on his new rod now.
Yet again an amazing video!
Thank you Mr.Marcus.
Great tips and demonstration my friend! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Mr. Mark. It's a little different than my normal videos. I'm trying to talk more tips than just cutting up in the creek. Have a safe and Happy New Year.
Finding this firsthand knowledge painfully and sharing it is great. Glad you're doing this an learning along the way. Happy New Year brother Trey.
I can't say that I didn't have fun learning! I was out in the rain until dark this afternoon having fun..I meant gaining that knowledge! Happy New Year Mr. Brian. Be safe this week.
Thanks for sharing.
I appreciate you taking the time to watch! I hope you are doing well. Have a safe and Happy New Year!
Wonderful info. Appreciate it brother
Thank you Kody! I appreciate you stopping by. I hope the information is helpful. Be safe out there.
good tips Trey.
Thank you Mr. Mike! This is a little different format for me, I figured I would turn it into education for new anglers, and not just cutting up in the creek. I hope all is well. Have a safe and Happy Year.
New subscriber. Absolutely fantastic content. Can’t wait to put your info into practice here on a nearby mid TN creek.
I appreciate you David. Thank you so much for stopping by. Keep me posted on your creek adventures. I'm interested in what things are working for you. I'm in middle TN as well. Happy New Year to you. Be safe out there.
Slow down and sneak. Fish are very spooky in the winter. Glad you are wearing camo. 😊
LOL! I have been looking into getting a fishing ghillie suit that I can wear over my waders! These fish better look out.
Yes. I agree with the smaller baits in the cold, but when the temps rise some, especially in March in my area. Go to the RIGHT color spinerbait and you’ll see some quality fish.
I approve that message for sure! You are correct! We just had a little warm up here last week, and if I had had a spinerbait in my backpack, I would have tried it "slow and low". The water levels were up, and the smallies were attacking the small bait fish in the slack water. Happy New Year!
I always liked fishing where the creek meets the river. There are some big fish there when the time is right.
That is a really good spot! Do you wade in, walk, or kayak in from the river?
We need to be friends. I’m 60 and been fishing creeks for smallies for 54 years here in TN. My dad was a fisheries biologist and as a boy I was at his heels wading the creeks and rivers. After a semi-pro bass fishing tournament stint for years I went back to the creeks. Haven’t looked back. Hope your drag screams !
Great video. A bison color trout magnet on 2lb line has caught me a ton of smallies, crappie, redeye, sauger, walleye, and trout in TN creeks in winter. Give it a test. Even the 2lb don't stress. I use SOS brand which breaks at 3.3lbs. It will handle 16-18" smallies no issues.
I appreciate the tip greatly! That's fishermen's GOLD! I'll be sure to give it a try. I have been running 10lb braid with a fluorocarbon leader. I know those smallies don't fight as hard in winter, but I like the insurance policy. LOL! I caught 1 today over 16", and as cold as the water was, he was fighting like crazy! Do you have to finesse them in on that 2lb braid?
@ the SOS is not braid. Its a copolymer monofilament line. I honestly treat it abusively lol. I have a lot of confidence in it. You could use 10lb braid it's the dia of 2lb with no issues. I would use a leader. I like not having to worry about leaders unless it's trout then I'll add a fluoro leader on the 2lb line if they get snooty.
@ a light action, 2lb test, with that 1/64 trout magnet in bison has treated me well. I've literally caught so many species with it from everything found here to croakers and trout in the Gulf. You give me that setup I won't get skunked or starve. 🤣
Some great tips there. Too bad we don't have creeks like this in south NY. We definitely don't have any smallies in the creeks or rivers that I fish at.
Thank you Mr. Tom. I will say, we are lucky in Tennessee. The winters are fairly mild and TN has a very diverse fish population. We have over 285+ fish species here. It's pretty crazy. If you ever come through TN, be sure to let me know. Happy New Year buddy.
Hahah that intro
Alex, I was this close to having to push that Life Alert button! LOL!
Good video. I imagine the Zman tiny TRD or live minnows might be good.
I’ve caught all my SM on 3” or smaller baits in creeks. Even my best 21” 5 lb was caught on a 2.75 TRD.
Thank you so much! I greatly appreciate you stopping by. I like those smaller Zman baits, plus they are super durable. Congrats on that 21". That's a true creek monsters! Be safe out there.
New sub here!
Thank you so much! I greatly appreciate that very much. Happy New Year to you!
I like smaller baits in the winter
It really does seem to help, even if you are just catching the smaller guys....BUT I'll take that in winter. I hope you have a safe and Happy New Year!
Trey MULE FISHING has a 1 inch craw made from elastec
I know exactly what you are talking about Mr. Patrick. My Buddy Dan Thompson sent me several packs of the soft plastics, along with several different wights of the smaller jigs. You can catch creek chubs that gear!
And Ethan from Fish Anything started Mule Fishing. Another good collaboration opportunity. He and John Dalton from Creek Fishing Adventures do a once a month podcast. Also on John's channel
I’m gonna test this theory tomorrow and come back to comment. Hoping and betting you’re right!
Keep me posted. I will be curious to see what you notice. We are all learning together. Most everything that I fish is 6 feet or less. I only wade the creeks in winter, so if I can't walk through it, I can't fish it. Deeper waters are going to fish differently I would think. I used larger baits in the rivers back when I fished for flatheads. Fishing it slow was the only common factor. Happy New Year buddy.
I bet you’re in middle Tennessee. Here in East Tennessee, in and around Knox County, the only decent creeks nearby are pretty muddy at the bottom. Also a lot of debris in the water. Not the best for wading but I may give it a try!
Bingo! I'm right outside of Nashville. I'll have to look at the map, but I have not fished in Knox county. Wading in mud is not fun. I was in a section of a creek yesterday, and I kept sinking up to my knees. I got a good workout walking through that mess! Happy New Year to you Matt. Keep me posted if you try to fish it. Be careful not to sink too deep in your waders. That's always on my mind.
What part of TN are you fishing?
I'm in Middle TN, just outside of Nashville.
@@fishsmackgot ya. Thanks for the reply. I'm in East TN and have been doing creek fishing the past couple weeks as well. Haven't tried for any smallies, but have had luck with really nice brown and rainbow trout.
Very nice! You all have some nice bodies of water over in East TN. I think TWRA started stocking Steelhead Trout over in your area. Those Browns are so pretty. Happy New Year to you. Be safe out there fishing.
@fishsmack yes there are some really nice rivers, creeks, and lakes here. Things are definitely interesting after Helene. Also I'm not sure on Steelheads, but they did stock some Golden trout in my area. I saw one and took a picture, but yet to catch one. Hopefully I can get one soon. Happy New Year to you as well. Will hit the subscribe button and follow you on your fishing adventures.
Thank you so much. Nice to talk to you.
I'm not necessarily trying to put this channel down. That everybody on here is a expert at fishing some sort and it's just so over complicated. Fishing is easy yes you got to learn a bunch of things but you don't have to know all these fancy terms and blah blah blah. This is not to say I don't like your show or have anything against you. Your show is pretty good it just kills me I see this all the time though
I understand where you are coming from, and I do appreciate you taking the time to comment. My wife says I over think things, but I'm not sure where she's coming up with that. I'll have to think about it. LOL! Happy New Year to you Scott. Be safe buddy.
