    I had a Diamond Back "Silver Streak" I bought brand new around 1984. I had saved all the money from my paper route to buy. I was tired of saving for the PK ripper and settled for the Diamond Back. Here I am a few years later with my my brand new "Big Ripper" at 51 years old trying to make it ride faster and jump higher. Thanks for the video , the tips are spot on!

    Okay. So this is, like, the best TH-cam channel I’ve found. I’m 42, used to ride BMX bikes as a youngster, got a car, STOPPED riding bikes, turned 30 and started getting fat so I got into road bikes, fucked up my back, had surgery, couldn’t ride road bikes anymore and discovered the world of Big Wheel BMX! I am not lying when I say that this channel has been a huge help in my recovery from surgery! I’ve learned so much and I just went on my first 26 mile ride out over the weekend! Just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to the Big Bike BMX crew for all the inspiration.
    Now a question. Because of this video I started running a 17t freewheel on my Purple Rain Big Ripper. Made a huge difference on hills and in pedaling ease in general. But sometimes it feels a little “loose” on the downhill. Can I upgrade my sprocket to balance that a bit more. I’ve heard a 42t sprocket is a good gear ratio for climbing and hills, but also to give you a bit more meat when you pedal on the flats. What would you recommend? Anything special you like?
    Thanks again for all that you do and any help with my sprocket issue would be awesome! Can’t wait for future videos!

    • @BigBikeBMX
      @BigBikeBMX  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words bro! For gearing: The smaller the front chainring, the easier the pedalling. The Purple Rain has 36. If you want a little more balance then you'll want a 37 to balance the 17 in the rear. Personally, I would run the 17 to build leg strength and balance, then go back to the stock 16 size freewheel and you'll probably feel what you're looking for. That's what I did and with my Big Flyer this year. It's the stock gearing.
      Welcome to this crazy big bike bmx family Jeffrey!

    First upgrades for me, running a 20" used to be the tallest handle bars I could find. Second was a XXXL goose neck, third was two pairs of handle grips, one pair of red and the other black. Forth was sticky break pads, fifth was tires. Somewhere in between there was a decent pedal set. Then came a little higher gear ratio. Oh yeah, almost forgot about the laid back seat post. My knuckles drag the floor, so I needed to stretch out the cockpit.

I subscribed because I have recently purchased a GT pro performer 29, I like it lots but riding is a bit of a workout until I lose another 20lbs >.< currently 230 target weight of 190. In the meantime I'd like to learn to wheelie but im still a bit awkward on the bike and its been too cold for me to wanna mess around. For now I just do laps and practice learning manuals and bunny hops when Im feeling spry.

    My 2019 GT Pro Performer, is pretty much epic out of the box! Since I am 6'5" I want the SE Racing power wing bars!! It already has a laid back seat post. So it is pretty roomy. My 2019 Fast Ripper bars are a little shorter than the GT, and no laid back seat post! But it does have 10 gears! So I am not gonna complain!!! I see there is a new GT 1X9 on the horizon, and I am excited to see it up close and personal!!!

    Recommend Upgrades for a 2021 Fast Ripper.
    1st mod - get rid of the skinny thick slick tyres. Throw on a pair of 2.5 inch Maxxis Hookworms Tyres for better grip, tricks, suspension and stability.
    2nd - Throw out the Tektros for Shimano Deore Front and Rear Brakes. Way better braking for hill bombing and wheelie control.
    3rd - Throw out the cheap platform pedals for a set of DMR Vaults. Lighter, stronger, way better grip and larger balance platform.
    4th - Spread out the 10 speed gear range. Upgrade the rear cassette from 11-32 to 11-36. Go 2 up on the front sprocket for motorbike speed hill bombing.
    5th - Set of SE Wheelie Pegs.
    6th - Bigger bars. I went for a set of Super Big Honk'n bars.
    7th - Lightweight Tubes.
    8th - Throw on that Bottle Cage for those longer block rolls.
    9th - Silm Front n Rear LED night lights.
    The stock price is steep, if only the bike actually came like this.

    • @BigBikeBMX
      @BigBikeBMX  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Back in the 80s I had the same freewheel that came on my Tuff Wheels and then my Peregrine HP 48s. I wanted to change my gearing a little so the freewheel was the easiest thing to swap out. Shaun told me about the points of engagement upgrade so I went for it. It wasn't expensive at all. I immediately felt the difference when I would start to pedal out of wheelies or just resetting my crank arms for a jump etc.
      These bikes run beautifully stock, but once you start adding your personal touches and adding parts that you remember from the 80s it starts feeling more and more like home. I'll probably add a GT mallet stem at some point just to complete my 80s look.
      Thanks for watching and let me know what you think of the freewheel upgrade if you add it. Good luck!

      My advice is try the gearing with a cheap freewheel and make sure it's perfect for how you want to ride, and then spend the extra money on the White Ind freewheel.

    • @BigBikeBMX

      RideOutSupply has the best affordable freewheel out there. High engagement and low drag.
      Bars are fun to play with lots of 8-10” bars out there.
      Best advice - go ride it and see what comforts you want to invest in. Complete bikes today are 100% better than the fully custom stuff growing up. Upgrades are mostly for looks and style these days

Here's the key, MOST people upgrade these things with custom parts to their liking so getting a flyer and grabbing new bars and sprocket is likely cheaper than getting a stock Big Ripper. If you're wanting an easier wheelie gearing it's the same advice for all bikes. Smaller chainring or larger freewheel. I'd suggest a new freewheel as you can get better engagement AND easier gearing in one part/upgrade. I'd look at going to a 12 tooth freewheel and see how that feels. As always, check with your local bike shop for the best advice. Look for a high engagement freewheel like Origin8 / Rideoutsupply!

Pedal broke , the back wheel is not in line anymore… chain is bad e it s slow , really hard to keep it goin fast….. I’m looking every shop in my city but everyone says bike parts don’t fit that bike, that is Chinese and I should buy a mtb (they don’t get the one wheel lifestyle ) if all of these components, with new pedal and chain and freewheel are gonna let my bike be a real one I’m nna order everything. Is that brake really better than the original one? Cause when I go fast and really high on one wheel, especially to scrape hand, the brake really does not support me even if I fully brake with all my power…… hope u can help, if I can perdere all those part from u I’m na buy it all……

      If mine sounds weird out of the box, I start with chain tension... then cranks... then freewheel... Grease the spindle, pedals, metal-on-metal stuff. It sounds like you did that. Check chain alignment on the sprocket next. Good luck.

      It’ll make it easier to pedal and wheel around the neighborhood. You’ll lose some top-end speed on Linder rides but it’s a great idea if you’re learning wheelies or like super responsive gearing. You can run a 15 on one side and the 18 on the other. That gives you the best of both and you just flip the wheel around to use it.

    • @BigBikeBMX
      @BigBikeBMX  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a huge jump, but yes it will get you more distance per single rotation of your cranks. I'd look at something closer to a 36 honestly. You'll likely need a longer chain but that depends on how much space you have between the front of the dropout and the axle. I'd consult your local shop to make sure though. You can always call Phoneix Bike Company and talk with Shaun about it if your local shop isn't an option. Good luck!

    Just picked up a 2020 GT ProPerformer 29 heritage... Havent been on a BMX bike in 25 years and so far I'm loving it.. What would you recommend as far as version of the origin freewheel for this bike?? I believe it comes with a 36T chainwheel, so wondering what my best option would be on the gearing for the freewheel.. Thanks!

      Great question and congrats on the new GT! Take your stock freewheel and add one or two teeth and you’ll notice a big difference in how easy it is to pedal and pop the wheel up. My big ripper had a 15 ltooth and I went with a 17 for example👍

    is the stock gear ratio the same for rippers and flyers? and what’s the best ratio for wheelies in your opinion

      25 or 27x9 is the best ratio

    What’s the loudest 17t freewheel I can get for my blocks flyer?

      RideOutSupply is my first suggestion. Origin8 works too, but RideOutSupply is the one most folks are using right now. Hit their website and look up the chart for blocks flyer and make sure it’ll fit your hub. If you’re unsure, send them a message and RideOutSupply will confirm their 17 will work.

      Paul E Doggs RideOutSupply.com has a chart that shows what freewheel fits each SE bike. It’s super useful🤘💪

    why is the front sprocket so small?

    • @BigBikeBMX
      @BigBikeBMX  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evolution. Smaller front larger rear. Feels the same as the basic 44/16 back in the 80s

    Is a stock throne the goon pretty quick cause I ride with fixie track guys

      Yes. The gearing is more aggressive than other stock big BMX bikes. They’re taking pre-orders right now for new Goon bikes and I’m not sure if the gearing changed. The older 2020 bikes had the more aggressive gearing though🤘
