    Thank you for sharing your story and advice. Myself I was an 80’s bmx racer and freestyle, did it both. Had a Hutch Pro and Trickstar. Raced mtb and road, alao speed skated. Now turning 50 in February looking back at my bmx roots and will be getting a big bmx very soon. Honestly I haven’t touched my road bike and mtb bike, I know big bmx will get me back riding.

    you should have shown us you riding it...i am 50 and i had a muddy fox small bike about 26 inch hard tail and front ..changed the bars and it was like a big bmx ..and i could pop a wheelie on that easy....
    now i have another mountain bike...but im liking the big ripper...and i know i am old..but i can pop a wheelie for blocks and now working on my manuals....this shit keeps me young..whilst everyone else my age is deadly serious and acting mature....
    the joy i get from popping a 1k wheelie and the kids screaming hey look at that....i love it.
    its probably the most fun i have had ..true joy ...in many years.
    keep it up ...ride until we drop.
    and once a bmxer....you know how to ride proper...my brother in law is quite well off and he has a top mountain bike worth maybe a couple of thousand....and he cant ride to save his life...cant pop a wheelie...can manual for about 0.5 seconds...bunnyhops are just some kind of mess...and he busted himself up recently just didnt know how to take the line and went flying and broke his collar bone....very rare to see a bmx guy on a mountain get this kind of injury...why ....BECAUSE WE KNOW HOW TO RIDE.
    GOOD LUCK....i wish you lived local to me ..we could show these kids how its done.

    My first BMX was a DodSun Surfer BMX, similar frame to a Norco Spitfire from 1981 (I have read that those frames were made in the same factory anyway), black loop tail frame, with chrome forks and coaster brake, very relaxed geometry but at the time it didn't matter, I was happy to be getting into racing and just riding my bmx.

    This was my first TH-cam video I came across when I started researching SE bikes and I'm back watching again. I ended up getting the 26 Fat Quad and it cruises like a Cadillac. So now I'm hooked and looking to get 29 Big Ripper in the next couple of weeks. I test rode the Fat Quad and a 29 Dyno before buying the Fat Quad. At 5'10 165 with long limbs, that 29 felt more ideal. I just couldn't pass up the fit and finish of that Fat Quad; truly special bike.
    27.5s are harder to come by and I'll just stick with my 26 and that 29 I'm gunning for. These bikes are pulling me from the road bike world of cycling.

    Great video! I'm 50, and just picked up a used SE OM Flyer a week ago. I thought a 26" wheel would be good for me at 6 foot and 200 pounds. I'm an old bmx'r from the 80s as well. I thought I would be riding wheelies, doing bunny hops, side hacks, doing some jumps, and hitting my local single track mountain bike trails with it. I've ridden this bike almost everyday over the last week, and I've come to find that I really just want to ride and do wheelies. I can actually do without the bunny hops, jumping and whatnot.
    I definitely need taller bars. The bike just feels a little too small. I'm going to give it about a month, and if I can't get on with it , I'm going to sell it and pick up a 29. Probably a GT Dyno Pro Comp or Pro Performer as I prefer a chromoly frame.

    5-25-20 I will be 49 years young! I bought the SE Racing Fast Ripper on 10-5-18. After waiting for a couple of months for the Fast Ripper, I came across a GT Pro Performer after a phone call from a local bike Shop. Two months went by and still no Ripper! I had mentioned to the owner that I googled 29" bmx bikes, and never heard of a 1×10 speed bmx bike! So after a little research I found the Fast Ripper has a 23.6" T.T. and a 43" W.B. running disc breaks. I am 6' 5" with a 36" inseam. My knuckles drag on the floor!! So I preordered it. Okay so after that two months of waiting, the owner sends me a text, and says. Hey man, you want to come take a look at this big GT? I said sure do, I will pedal right over to take a look at it. After tossing around the idea of another $730 bike, I said I better wait for a little more time! After the third month of waiting for the fast Ripper. I got another text, hey you wanna come take the big GT for a test run?? I said no sir, because I would want to take it home with me if I did!! He said sounds great, I will see you in a little while. After riding the GT, I was headed back home for some extra money!!! Now I have a 2019 GT Pro Performer 29" and after waiting 15 months for the Fast Ripper, I am wanting to buy the 2020 GT Pro Performer!!! These monster BMX Bikes, ride like a Cadillac floating down the interstate!!!!! I am totally happy with the 71° seat stay and the 71° head tube angles. Both bikes are virtually the same ride, but still are world's apart!!! Both bikes are EPIC!!!!!!!!!! 😎

    After cheap bikes in my early years, I was fortunate to upgrade to a 1990 Dyno Compe, which eventually led me to a Dyno Slammer the following year.
    So many awesome memories were those years cruising and jumping on my Dyno. I quit riding when I got my drivers license. Tried getting back into
    bikes about 6 years ago and ended up with a Fat Tire Beach Cruiser. Although it was cool and fun to ride, it didn't have that feeling I had on my BMX.
    About that time, GT started bringing out the Heritage 26 & 29 throwbacks. It got my attention immediately. I debated forever and missed out thinking
    my the feeling would pass but it didn't. I scoured the internet for months and finally landed the 29" Pro Compe! Riding this brings back all the nostalgia
    I felt as kid! It brings me joy just staring at it!

    I raced BMX back in the '80s and I still have my 1982 GT that's been hanging in my garage for 27 plus years, I took my wife's bike into the local bike shop to get some work done and I found out about these PK rippers (I didn't even know big bike BMX was a thing) and I am just blown away and cannot wait to get one. I think I'm going to ask the owner if he will trade me the PK ripper for my old GT because he was very interested in it when I told him I have one.

If at all possible, you should ride both bikes and get the best feeling you are looking for!! Don't settle on any bike until you ride the one that puts the biggest ear to ear grin, on your face!!! After waiting 15 months for the first generation of SE RACING FAST RIPPERS, and buying the GT PRO PERFORMER. I got a text about the OM DURO XL, and it was still in the box! I said yeah okay I will have to come take a look at it. After a few months went by and spring had finally sprung! I got a second text with a picture of said bike all built up and ready to ride... So I went to the bike shop and said, okay show me!!! And now I am the proud owner of a SE RACING OM DURO XL, and I seriously love this bike!!!!! Then about a week ago I was wondering around a different bike shop, and found a SALSA FARGO XL gravel bike 🤔 it set me back around $2640.44 but its a 4130 Chromoly frame with a carbon fiber fork and hydraulic disc breaks. Graduated to a Robinson 24" and a couple GT 24" aluminum bikes. Rebuilding my early 90's 24" Free Agent that I still have. And, going to pick up the PK Ripper 27.5 to celebrate COVID-19 and my first new BMX bike since about 1996.

      @@BigBikeBMX Here's a quick little tale. I think it was 79 when I got my Mongoose from Yesteryear Schwinn here in New Bedford. It was blue with the blue crank set [Shimano?] Yellow Tuff Wheels, off the rack Mongoose stuff. I got a summer CETA job and got the MkII and V bars and Tuff Neck. I put the Mongoose stuff on it and I rode that for that summer. Then my Uncle Steve bought me a G&S complete skateboard and I stopped riding the bike. I'm more of a skater than a biker. But, when I was 17 or so the skater didn't go as fast or far as the bike so I upgraded the bike to mostly what I have now. Then I went to my Dad's house one day to pick up my Rush tapes. I was in the house 30 seconds tops. I came out and it was GONE! I mourned it and moved on. Then one afternoon while I was chilling with my buddy this kid comes flying by on a bike. I look and guess who's it is? I grabbed my board and chased that little prick down a hill. That was a mistake on his part since he ran out of crank and I was gaining! 65MM Red Kryptonics are a very fast wheel. Especially when I'm on em and pissed. I remember yelling "Don't let me catch you!" I caught em by the seat post before the bottom of the hill. I dragged him and the bike back to my house up the bock. I took off everything that was mine. I got back the frame, bars and stem. My seat post and seat as well as my Dia Compe brakes with the quick release [remember those?]. Never saw the rest, but I put it back together with Flight cranks from a friend and rims and tires from the bike shop. I never let that bike out of my sight again.

I loved watching him pad up the street with what was left of the bike in his little hands. One thing is for sure, he learned a valuable lesson that day. I hope it stuck with him.

      I tried it on the 29 big ripper and the 26 Haro master. Nothing seems to work great. I used a DiaCompe Boomerang plate that bolts on and gives you 990 tabs. The wheels are too big to stop enough for flatland. I have a PK Ripper 27.5” with disc brakes and a potts mod. I can tailwhip that thing 🤘

      I don't think so. It all comes down to what style of riding you want to do. If you're looking at lots of street riding and jumping, I'd go 26 or 27.5 to have a more agile bike. The 29 is like a big Cadillac. It's easy to ride and great for long distances. Good luck!

I'm taller than I was in 1984 and so this bike scales up with my current height. I hope that makes sense. If I'm going on a rideout though, I'd grab a 29er.

    I bought a DK General Lee from dan's comp in like 2002 for around $350. I only bought it bc it was a good price. In the picture it came with 3 pc cranks. But the one I recieved had 1 pc cranks. I called dan's and they were really cool and sent me a pair of 3 pc cranks. The bike was really decent. But I heard later on DK was selling bikes at toys r us for a while.

    So here's my question. Can you ride it hard? I am about your age. When I rode I pushed it as fast as I could through the streets of Miami. I know they do wheelies but can you race them. I'm talking about going so fast that you almost lay it down while your turning. Hope that makes sense. Great videos as well.

    • @BigBikeBMX
      @BigBikeBMX  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you’re looking at speed as a primary factor, look at the geared fast ripper 29er. These bikes can move and the head tube is kicked out enough that you won’t feel sketchy in corners. They were designed by Todd Lyons so I trust the BMX geometry because that’s his wheelhouse. You’ll want to adjust the gearing for a higher top speed if you go with the single-speed big ripper. They can take a beating. I’d grab some hookworm tires if you’re riding fast on the streets too. Another option is the OM Duro. SE Bikes has a clip of Todd bombing down a ski slope in the summer on one of those. Regardless of the model, there’s a big BMX bike that’ll feel like your BMX bike you remember that’s sized for our adult bodies 🤘 - great question, thanks for asking💪

    Question, is it difficult to bunny hop / jhop with larger 29 wheels? Do you think 26 wheels would be better suited for this? Thank you!

    • @BigBikeBMX
      @BigBikeBMX  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can only share my personal experience. I rode the 26 inch DBlocks and Haro and I thought they felt small and harder to wheelie.
      The front wheel come up fast but both are longer so you need more speed to clear things. I’ve bunnyhopped over a wheel on a bike laying down and it took everything I had to clear it. I haven’t tried to bunny hop a 26 inch yet.
      If you’re thinking of street stuff like bunny hops and wall rides, I’d avoid the fat tire bikes because they’re a little meaty. My big ripper literally feels like my old Haro master all grown up. Feels like home riding down the street to meet your friends in 1980 something 🤘

I think all he did was change the saddle so it’s a little more comfy for longer distance. I’d look at the OM Duro as well. It’s a BMX bike with mountain bike gears.
