Modern big wheel bmx bikes vs your 80s bike. Your 80s bike was trying to be a big bmx bike.

  • The biggest concern I had and I've heard other old-school guys say about these big wheel 29er BMX bikes is that they just want to ride the bikes they remember from the 80s. In this video, I try to show you how the geometry they have now matches the geometry we were trying to fix from our old-school bikes.
These big BMX bikes really do feel like the bikes you know and love, only they're comfortable to ride around on as an adult.

Wow you are so right just like my old bmx bikes. I love it. Thanks by the way im 6'3 230 lbs and born in 1972. I did manage to get the front wheel off the ground. It has been a long time since I rode a bmx bicycle. I cant wait to wheelie....

John that's awesome! Welcome back! I know exactly how you feel. Sounds like we had a similar history. I added a 17 tooth freewheel in the back and it made popping up a little easier. I'll tell you though, your brain/body doesn't forget how to wheelie. Give it a few hours and you'll have straight lines back. Then it's just a matter of time before you're on one wheel more than two!

Shit I didn’t even know these existed! Not only has my body not forgotten bmx, my mountain bike has never felt right. I have a 2008 Gary Fischer hifi+ and at no point have I ever really liked it much. It’s clunky, it can’t climb for shit without slipping gears, it’s finicky, and the cool, new-fangled, full-suspension crap just makes it feel like driving a truck. I was born in ‘71 and lived on my lime-green Pro Performer. Man, something like that I could ride now? Sold!

I’m about to turn 44 and just got a Ripper to ride around with my son. He’s not even two yet and we already have him on a Stryder.
Most days when I get home from work he’ll greet me at the door and tug at my pant leg and say “Da, bike, side side(outside)”
I never knew how to do any tricks but I loved to ride all day. Hoping our son loves it as much as I did and we can keep him outside and away from screens.
I never had anything as nice as a Ripper growing up, but man it makes me feel like I’m 8 years old again 😃 It’s the bike I always wanted as a kid!

Hey man, it all comes down to how you’re going to use it. If you’re doing wheelies and things, the 26 would still work. I’ve seen youngsters doing wheelies on the monster quad. If you’re going straight comfort though, I’d look at the 26 first, then the 24. Simply getting taller bars makes a world of difference to making them feel old-school🤘

I got into mountain bikes for about 10 years after that. And until your video I thought my bmx days were over. I’ve been looking for a new bike but really only ride pavement these days and now that I’ve found the big bmx I am literally getting one ASAP. I’m 6’2 but I think the 29” will fit me. Trying to figure it out and super bummed that none of these come with gyros! I wanna show my kids what's up, old man still got it. 3) thanks for pointing out about the seat geometry... that's awesome... would have never thought about that... finally, what if you had the "new geometry" but still added a layed back seat post?? What happens then??

    • @BigBikeBMX
      @BigBikeBMX  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have a hollow stem bolt with an old-school pots mod like we did our front brakes in the 80s. I had to add a 990 boomerang plate for a front brake. The stock rear brake cable will spin around once so you can ride away and spin the bars back afterwards. I got the custom decals from RideOutSupply.com - there’s a video of the process in the videos list here. I think the laid back post would just extend the reach a bit and make the seat feel like a “banana seat” but I could be wrong. Good luck!! 🤘🤘

An easier way to explain this is to measure and compare the distance from the center of the bottom bracket to the rear axle. As you mentioned about the gap between the 20 inch wheel and the seat tube, that creates more distance between the crank and the rear axle, and that distance is about the same on a 26/29 inch even though the wheel is bigger, because the wheel takes up that space.

Some light dirt jumping, skatepark and trail but now i'm looking for a more oriented cruiser wheelie bike . so looking for a 26' .But here in France they are kind of rare and not easy to find .

It’s a little small honestly. I used their size chart on Pro-Tec’s website and it said I’m a medium but I think I’d like a large better. The color looks fantastic though. They have a gold one that looks super retro as well🤘 It’s a long drop to the cement on a 29er so I’d definitely suggest always riding with one and make sure you get a “certified” helmet. They’re tested and not just plastic with some foam. That was new since the 80s and it was interesting to learn about👍

The 26 feels good. I tell people the 26, 27.5, and 29 will all feel more comfortable for most riders. I’m riding the 27.5 pk ripper now and it’s my favorite so far. You’ll want to look at taller bars and that’s the key to making big bikes feel like old-school BMX bikes.

  • @terrydillon2656

Old school bay area bmx rider here. I love my 24" bikes but as you point out to do better wheelies it helped to have a laid back seat post in order to get over the rear wheel more. Another overlooked and free upgrade to help is to get your wheel to sit in as far forward in the dropouts as possible, usually by shortening the chain. To do this slide your wheel all the way in and hand tighten in on. Make sure you'll have enough tire to frame clearance and your brake pads will still adjust to your new rim position. Then take out enough chain links (but not too many) to be able to get the right chain tension with the wheel as far forward as possible. Although it's a small change a 1/4" or 1/2" can make a difference for wheeling old school bmx frames.
When you have a greater distance from the centerline of the rear axle to the centerline of the top of the seat post your balancepoint becomes narrower and you have to get the front wheel up much higher which brings you closer to looping out. And once you go over you"d better have a damn good strong rear brake. Believe me, it hurts like hell to loop out when your Vans wont slide off your grippy pedals and you go down on your back because you couldn't step out. I was even thinking about putting on an old school banana seat with a high sissy bar and maybe coming up with some new tricks.
Look, I'm 60 years old and I ride because it's still fun. When I'm told I should be sitting around drinking prune juice and playing shuffleboard I just ride away and rock a long wheelie. Don't let fear dominate your actions yet respect your limitations. If you don't push the envelope a little you'll always regret you didn't try.

Isaac, Im the same age and just got my first 29er. Decided to go with the 2020 GT street performer since everyone around me has the SE. Plus I couldn't resist the green/black camo. Nothing against SE rippers had one my self and still love em. Anyhow your vid nails it on how these bike feel. I haven't had this much fun on a pedal bike in a long time. I bought 2 more 29ers for my boys. Its such a blast ripping around town with them. Also what lights do you have on your bike and were did you get them.

Hey man, That's awesome you found a GT you love. That green camo looks super rad with the red. I'm all about seeing us old-school guys on big BMX bikes of ANY brand - Not just SE. I rode the orange Voelker Dyno and loved how it handles. To answer your question on lights, I just did a search on Amazon for rechargeable led bike lights. These are the ones I got. www.amazon.com/Ascher-Rechargeable-Headlight-Resistant-Included/dp/B01EUQ7ZQG/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Ascher+USB+Rechargeable+Bike+Light+Set%2CSuper+Bright+Front+Headlight+and+Rear+LED+Bicycle+Light%2C650mah+Lithium+Battery%2C4+Light+Mode+Options%282+USB+cables+and+4+Strap+Included%29&qid=1588884103&sr=8-1
I've had them four months now and they do what I need them to do. I've moved the front light down to my forks and they work better there.
