Upgrading and installing a new Ride Out Supply freewheel on my SE Big Ripper.

  • My Origin8 Freewheel was loud but there was a lot of drag and resistance from the freewheel. I wanted to see if the Ride Out Supply freewheel was better. I wasn't disappointed. I show you how to remove the old freewheel and install the Ride Out Supply freewheel with a few basic tools and show you the difference.

    Awesome sound and engagement, I’m sold! The chain tension looks a bit tight however! I was taught the goal with the chain tension on a freewheel is to have just enough chain tension that when you coast or take your feet off the pedals you don’t want your cranks to keep turning (ghost pedaling) so that when you do any tricks the pedals stay in the same position that you left them. Maybe that’s no longer an issue with these better new freewheels sprockets, just putting that out there.

    Lifetime Bayarea guy here and ex Club Homeboy member (I remember the newsletters). Dynofish, Vision Eyes, Ron Wilkerson, Eddie Fiola (I met Matt Hoffman when he like 14 and rode the Haro tours). I've always been a 24" rider, love 'em. In the early 70's (I'm 60 now) our only upgrade options were on Schwinn Stingrays. We'd put a rear tire on the front, spread out the bars and get someone to weld on a crossbar and homemade frame brackets or you could heat up the gooseneck and spread it open to slip in some motocross bars. Then came the Littlejohn Murphy with Motomags. In the 80's I stepped up to the 24s with a Race Inc. then a fully loaded Boss. Both with blue Tuff Wheels. I did the single father thing for 20 years and a couple of years ago I wanted to get back into cruising the half mile wheelies I loved so much. I looked at all the new stuff. Cult, Sunday, We The People, etc. I was surfing Craigslist and found a 2004 Redline Flight 24" Bubba Harris for $200. It was never ridden, still had the tire mold nub strings on original tires. It's all sealed bearings and I was surprised to find the Euro BB had 4 bearings. I'm upgrading it now (when do you ever stop?).I put on tuffs, Powerblock 2.10s, Stolen 4 piece bars, old style MX front brake (old guys like brakes) etc. I tried to get a Profile, White, Hornet freewheel but no one has anything but a Shimano, ACS or the cheap Lian Cheng stuff. I'll checkout the ROS availability. Anyway, from one old guy to the next, if you have a front brake and you're cruising a long wheelie, tap it and stop the front wheel spin. It looks a bit more cool. It's like getting extra pepperoni.

And come from dirtbikes for 30 yrs....im addicted to wheelies and want the best big bmx money can buy..... pls any help? Ps. Will the 27.5 taj be too small for me? • @BigBikeBMX
      @BigBikeBMX  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you can wait until bikes are in shops again, I'd suggest you do it. The brands you mention don't really invest heavily in the big BMX scene. They offer bikes, but they don't sponsor teams etc. SE Bikes, Throne, and Collective are the brands with actual teams and getting feedback from riders. The rest are just making cookie cutter big bikes. I'm always going to suggest an SE Big Ripper or Monster quad or Monster Dub if you're looking at a 29er. I personally love the PK Ripper 27.5 and ride mine 90% of the time. (I have a big ripper, OM Duro, and a PK Ripper). Sunday makes great bikes and I know a few folks who love them. Cult makes good bikes but I haven't ridden one. Dyno makes a really balanced and comfortable 29er. I'd probably ride a Dyno if I wasn't so happy with the SE lineup personally. Good luck man. The best bike is out there, you just have to ride them until you find the perfect fit.

    • @BigBikeBMX
      @BigBikeBMX  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be a few things. Chain tension is the first thing that comes to mind. I'd have your local bike shop take a look and make sure it's not too tight and that everything is lined up. Any bike you have should sound really smooth while pedaling regardless of brand. Mine was doing that on my big ripper and I loosened up the tension a little and it's back to quiet. Good luck.

    • @BigBikeBMX
      @BigBikeBMX  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      SS396RAT it all comes down to how you plan to ride your bike. The 17 was slightly easier to pedal and get the wheel up for wheelies but you sacrifice long distance speed because you top out and end up hamster wheeling and not increasing speed. The 16 is a good middle between speed and wheelies. I can tell a difference yes, but I spend a lot of time on my bikes and I think about things like that while I’m riding. Normal rider will just notice it’s easier to pedal.

  • @jacobportelli4780
    @jacobportelli4780 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Is there any performance difference between 15t 16t and the 17t freewheel because on my big ripper I have a stock 15t and I don't know how many teeth I should get when I get the ROS freewheel.

    • @BigBikeBMX
      @BigBikeBMX  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Here's what you'll get with a ROS freewheel. More engagement so any size will feel more responsive. The teeth size will make it easier to pedal as you increase teeth. 16 will be easier to pedal than the 15. etc. What you gain in easier to pedal you lose in top speed. Think of it like a 10 speed bike. Easy gear you pedal all day and barely move. Harder gear you press down and it takes you a long time to start moving but once you're going fast, it's easy.
      You'll want to decide what you're looking for in the gear ratio. I like a 33/17 on my big ripper because i can easily press down on the crank and the wheel pops right up and wheelies feel easier (to me). The trade off is that I tend to pedal more going on normal rides than someone next to me who has a 33/15. It's really up to you to decide what that performance means to you. Any size will benefit from the higher engagement though so it's worth it even if you go with the stock 33/15 gearing. Good luck. Great question.

    • @jacobportelli4780
      @jacobportelli4780 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So maybe I should get a 17t because I want to be able to pedal much easier when I wheelie but at the same time still be able to get enough speed to lift the wheel up.

      with a casette, the springs and engagement are inside the hub instead of inside the freewheel. You would have to swap the hub for a traditional hub/freewheel. You could talk to your local bike shop and have them look at lowering the front chainring and that would give you an easier gearing though.

If it's a modern bmx frame it might need a bigger rear smaller front to fit the frame design on modern bikes. 44/16 was standard in the 80s and you said Tuffs so I'm assuming. Good luck.

      Head over to SE Bikes and look up your bike. In the Specifications section it will list your freewheel tooth size under wheels. 👍
