It’s such a beautiful experiment. My husband and I have gotten to see two females with egg sacs, and we also had to protect these females from another daddy long legs. I came up looking to meet with her. I mean this mama was fighting with her babies in her mouth, but we brought him out here so she didn’t have to deal with that. And then I noticed that this guy was persistent so we brought him out here because we have several he was happy because he made it with my girl Charlotte. She sleeps above me every night and it’s so beautiful.
Isn't it incredibly rewarding to watch them carefully and up close? I'm glad you're getting to observe females with egg sacs! Have they hatched yet? We regularly have females with egg sacs in our home and I enjoy the moment the little spiderlings hatch!
Just had one on my arm with a egg sack, it now outside. We have a spider infestation as we live near a canal and there is also a bunch of Crain flies. Can’t stand any of them. I don’t kill them but jeez, it takes a year for theses things to grow and I swear they seem to stay hidden till there old enough to just walk around your house like they own it.
I'm terrified of spiders, but I heat my house with a wood furnace so I've learned to love these little guys. I let them thrive and they keep to themselves, but more importantly they really do control the bugs that come into the house with the firewood. They even keep the other, scarier spiders away.
They are welcome guests in my home, they eat nasty biting things and silverfish and do no harm just a once a year thorough dusting sessions clears away any excess cobwebs.
I witnessed one of these actually chasing down a giant house spider on its own web. Once it got a hold of the house spider they both fell down from my ceiling to the floor where the daddy long legs waited for the venom to kick in after it’s attack. Part of me wanted to save the house spider but it meant the other spider would go hungry after it’s efforts so I left them be. It really was awesome to see
I’m pretty sure I’ve witnessed one in the act of killing its mate before. Long time ago we had two of em that were in close proximity to each other in the corner of our den and one time they started attacking each other and He/she killed the other and literally began tying them up in the web. One of the only times I’ve ever witnessed such a thing.
Daddy longlegs, or harvestmen, are familiar Missouri animals. They are not spiders, but opilionids. Unlike spiders, they have a fused body form and lack silk and venom glands. In harvestmen, the body is a simple oval, and it's usually hard to tell where the “head” ends and the segmented “abdomen” begins.
Yep. I currently live in Missouri and see harvestmen a lot, just handled one today. I absolutely adore them and love how far back they go in the fossil record.
I keep them around and look at them. I few months or weeks ago there was one with an egg sack. I've been following it every day. Seeing momma spider carrying was so cool. First they hatched. Bunch of babies in the web. They slowly strated to disappear. Few of the spiders slowly got bitter by eating their siblings I think. Now there are like 5 left.
The cellar spider is one the best spiders you can have in your house. For example, it's during the summer and you have some annoying flies in your house. The #1 solution to rid your house of those annoying flying insects is this species of spider.
I have a gazillion in my current house. It’s an older home. To me they are the most prominent pest, in warmer months I am bombarded by them. And I am bothered because they leave piles behind and yucky webs. In my case I’d rather spend a day with a fly swatted handy to kill houseflies than see these guys everywhere. Maybe I wouldn’t mind so much if they weren’t so prolific and messy. But there it is. I have noticed the gyrations also, I always thought it was because I jiggled the web but I guess it does look self induced.
Hi , I have possibly thousands of cellar spiders in my house , the ones in my bedroom have names , there's big Veronica and Vera , I've seen everything they do and I really do love them they eat giant house spiders I don't like them because they wander and they're aggressive , Veronica and Vera s eggs have just hatched , occasionally one of them will come down on a strand of web and stay near my face I'm sure they're there to say hello then they go back up to Thier massive web around my bedroom , they see me every day from birth they are not scared of me , the babies are cute , I love the mothers carrying her egg ball around with her , I heard they were called cave spiders a long time ago , thanks for showing your video .
I love these spiders. They are so friendly. In the Spring and Fall these teeny, annoying ants enter my bathroom behind the base of my commode. A few years ago I noticed a very industrious spider back there, and I decided to pitch the ant traps. I am now on "Spidey" number 4, who's been around for about 6 months. She's not afraid of me; I've bent over and said "hi" and waved my fingers at her and there's been times she appeared to be waving back to me
I get them a lot in the apartment, mainly in my bathroom… above the tub, on the corner ceiling… I’ve seen one on each corner before, I just get a broom, lift them, and flush them down the toilet.. they are in my den, around my cats litter box, I leave them alone there, because they kill the roaches.. I’ve got them in the kitchen, they kill roaches there too… I found out they come in from the plumbing!
Have them here in the house. We leave them be as they feed on other bugs that are a problem. They stay a few days in a spot then seem to travel to a new spot. Seems like they follow the sent trails of other insects. I was once in the basement, and saw a celler spider come out of a crack in the ceiling boards. It lassoed a fly in mid flight with a web it threw. Rolled it up in a little ball, and took it's prize back hidden between the boards.
I had one live in my bathroom last winter. Once I saw a second spider. Not really wanting an entire family in there, I decided to try to knock the smaller new spider down and release it somewhere else but as soon as I moved torwards them and took the new spiders attention, the original spider pounced on the other spider and ate it 😅 Like dang bro, I wasn't trying to do ya like that 😅
Gyration is done to mimic the actions of other spiders, which causes prey sensation within the web, resulting in the spider under the illusion that there is food nearby.
They are great for my indoor garden. They have settled into the entire parameter of the rooms floor to wall joint. None come into the center of the room always hanging out on their webs on the edge. I have noticed that there may be a higher spider to intruder ratio as ive seen alot of cannibalism with them
Same here! Well, small jumping spiders are ok as well...But once there are spiders that are either too big or too hairy (we've been getting many Steatodes nobilis recently) , I evacuate them from the house immediately! :)
I live in Central Asia and when I moved from a city to the countryside last autumn, I was taken aback by the number of these spiders at my new home. I had to get rid of them initially, but slowly I started to accept our neighborhood. And now I feel much more relaxed around them, although still don't like waking up and seeing one above my bed - luckily, that happens seldom.
I have always called them cob web spiders untill today and watching your video. I had always been a little scared by them. But in the past 5 - 6 years i have come to kind of like them. I finally realized that they were harmless to us, and that they were just doing their thing. If i find them in a bad spot. I clear out the web a time or two, and the spider will take the hint and move on to a better location.
:D :D You might try to move them there yourself. I tried to relocate them a couple of times in our home, but it's tricky because the cellar spiders really like to stay in one place!
Have a momma cellar spider that we have let enjoy a corner of the house for awhile now. She had an egg sac that just hatched the other day. About 24 little buds are hanging out now. Curious how it’ll play out for them. Super cool.
Large spiders give me the creeps (yes, I know it's irrational) but Pholcus ph. are brilliant - I've seen them eating spiders that were several times times bigger than them. For this reason I'm happy to have a few around the house!
We have lots of them in our place. They actually will chase a fly that gets too close to the web, rally cool! I also put out a small piece of tomato, and they graze for a bit! I like them, I call them mom's pets!!
We have a male spider in our bathroom. My daughter (9 yo) loves spiders and named him King Kit Kat. She has seen it eat a fly and a stink bug. We are happy to know he is harmless and useful. He is our pet spider 🕷!
I love these spider and I usually just leave them bee in their web I don’t bother them plus there good pest controls and I named one in my bathroom he’s called jimmy the cellar spider
The general rule is I'll leave them alone if they leave me alone, but if they surprise spider me then they get kicked out. I'll also evict them if they have eggs, are visibly pregnant, are trying to mate or there are too many in one area. I've seen them take over houses to the point every corner has a gigantic one in it, so I'm not going to permit that in my house, but having a few around is good if they respect the tenancy limits.
I don't mind these spiders in my basement except they make way too much web material and I have to clean up once in awhile to make things look a bit tidy.
I have arachnophobia. Seriously. (I couldn't put my hand on a colour photo of a spider even if you offered me £500 to do so). But I'm *not* afraid of cellar spiders. In fact I leave their webs alone in my home unless they get too big and then I flick some away with a duster making sure I leave the resident spider alone. The reason I let them be and in fact *welcome* them? They *hunt* the huge house spiders which invade my home every autumn. If I see a house spider in my bedroom, I cannot turn off the light unless I've managed to trap it and put it outside. One hid in my dressing gown and I didn't know until I went downstairs to clean my teeth (old house with downstairs bathroom) and saw it out of the corner of my eye walking on my shoulder.😱 After I'd stopped throwing up and crying and gone back upstairs to put on my other dressing gown (I cannot wear the 1st one again until I have washed it) I inspected the sink and everywhere around it to make sure the spider had gone, in order to be able to clean my teeth. 2 days ago, there was a whopper of a house spider on the ceiling in the living room but it was at the opposite end to where I sit. This afternoon, I spotted it right above my PC, all trussed up like a neat little package, in the web of one of my 'guardians' , the cellar spider who lives up there. If you are afraid of the nasty, big, hairy legged spiders, let Pholcidae live with you and build their webs. They will keep you safe.
Yeah I’m the same way. I’m a HUGE arachnophobe when it comes to literally any other spider on this planet but i can comfortably sleep in the same room with one these little fellas knowing they’ll remain in their web 90% of the time and never bother me or crawl all over my damn walls and ceiling. Any other spider however who sets one leg in my room is gonna be kissing the bottom of my steel toe working boot.
As a former arachnophobe, I used to be absolutely terrified of these guys and gals when I was younger, but as an adult, I tend to leave them be since they keep the local mosquito population in check and those are far more annoying than occasionally walking into a web that these little fellas will have spun between some of the planters and vine supports in my backyard we have as part of our vegetable garden.
There are hundreds in my parents house in the country. We knock down the webs each week. They don't bother anyone except freaking out guests, and the cleaning lady. They migrates easily from one property to another by hitching a ride on an object.
I have a family of them in a corner in my shed I do my weed smoking in and they take care of any flies that get in so I love them. One day I alley ooped a fly into the big web with a swatter and I feel like we bonded

Best vid on this topic, thank you!
@@toro_bravo9420 That's great to hear. Thank you! 🥰
@natureclearly Of course! You gave awesome facts and the whole cycle of life like eggs and all. Me gusta! Informative 😎
3:16 crane flies are the 3rd creature sometimes referred to as daddy long legs
They are welcome guests in my home, they eat nasty biting things and silverfish and do no harm just a once a year thorough dusting sessions clears away any excess cobwebs.
Sometimes I get them in my house, cellar, spiders, daddy long legs
I witnessed one of these actually chasing down a giant house spider on its own web. Once it got a hold of the house spider they both fell down from my ceiling to the floor where the daddy long legs waited for the venom to kick in after it’s attack. Part of me wanted to save the house spider but it meant the other spider would go hungry after it’s efforts so I left them be. It really was awesome to see
It's amazing to watch isn't it? A much smaller cellar spider will do battle with a massive house spider and win.
If I hadn't seen this myself I wouldn't have believed it
I’m pretty sure I’ve witnessed one in the act of killing its mate before. Long time ago we had two of em that were in close proximity to each other in the corner of our den and one time they started attacking each other and He/she killed the other and literally began tying them up in the web. One of the only times I’ve ever witnessed such a thing.
Nature at its finest
Daddy longlegs, or harvestmen, are familiar Missouri animals. They are not spiders, but opilionids. Unlike spiders, they have a fused body form and lack silk and venom glands. In harvestmen, the body is a simple oval, and it's usually hard to tell where the “head” ends and the segmented “abdomen” begins.
Yep. I currently live in Missouri and see harvestmen a lot, just handled one today. I absolutely adore them and love how far back they go in the fossil record.
There are two types of Cellar spiders; one with a round abdomen, and one with the elongated abdomen.
I have a few of them in my apartment currently, and have noticed them attacking roaches due to a roach problem.
Natural pest control!
They’re more dangerous then they look!
I love a woman like you who look a teeny weeny sad. Thank you for that lecture in entomology. Merci.
The cellar spider is one the best spiders you can have in your house. For example, it's during the summer and you have some annoying flies in your house. The #1 solution to rid your house of those annoying flying insects is this species of spider.
It has wings, right?
As a kid I used to pick them up and play with them.
They are helpful spiders, yes, but their poo sticks to the floor and is hard to clean.
Spiders are awersome. Every lil one of them. Their presence is calming for me. (this is 100% not a spider-made propaganda.)
I have around 20 in my house and I have so many garden spiders i also have a nest of house spiders and we don't know where there coming from
That's a lot of spiders! What part of the world are you living in?
She's not afraid of me; I've bent over and said "hi" and waved my fingers at her and there's been times she appeared to be waving back to me
Yes! I have seen gyration in these spiders
ABSOLUTELY -- these are OUR spiders : )
i am aracnophobic but i respect them ..not kill it because i know tha they are best insectiicide that exist in world. ..
Not really wanting an entire family in there, I decided to try to knock the smaller new spider down and release it somewhere else but as soon as I moved torwards them and took the new spiders attention, the original spider pounced on the other spider and ate it 😅
Like dang bro, I wasn't trying to do ya like that 😅
Gyration is done to mimic the actions of other spiders, which causes prey sensation within the web, resulting in the spider under the illusion that there is food nearby.
They are great for my indoor garden. They have settled into the entire parameter of the rooms floor to wall joint. None come into the center of the room always hanging out on their webs on the edge. I have noticed that there may be a higher spider to intruder ratio as ive seen alot of cannibalism with them
They are the only spiders I allow to live in my house.
Same here! Well, small jumping spiders are ok as well...But once there are spiders that are either too big or too hairy (we've been getting many Steatodes nobilis recently) , I evacuate them from the house immediately! :)
My house is full of them. How do I get rid? I'd rather have any other insect than these in my house. Sorry, I just don't like any sort of spiders!
I always leave them in my home. Whenever my daughter gets rid of them, we got more random bugs in the house.
I have a few in my house. I don’t bother them unless I have to clean where they are.
I like them. I've never seen one eat another spider, though!
I usually leave my daddy long legs alone. Although in the winter there isn't much it can eat.
Ive named her charlotte...ive fed her house flies i find in the front breezeway. She is hug now!
Pholcidae in the carport, black widows in the back, if only i could get these ones to discover the back!
:D :D You might try to move them there yourself. I tried to relocate them a couple of times in our home, but it's tricky because the cellar spiders really like to stay in one place!
@@natureclearly I'll see them in the exact same spot and pose for a week!
i have been so lucky as to have seen the baby spiders near their Ma : )
Aren't they cute? 🤗
Just made a new room mate, and i accidently made a loud noice, and she started to wobble and freak out
Have a momma cellar spider that we have let enjoy a corner of the house for awhile now. She had an egg sac that just hatched the other day. About 24 little buds are hanging out now. Curious how it’ll play out for them. Super cool.
Nice spiders.
Large spiders give me the creeps (yes, I know it's irrational) but Pholcus ph. are brilliant - I've seen them eating spiders that were several times times bigger than them. For this reason I'm happy to have a few around the house!
I leave them alone they're great!
Do they eat and recycle their webs? I like them and check on mine daily. They seem to move into each others webs. Maybe communal or mating
Yes, they're in my bathroom. They likely hatched their kids near the hallway lights that turned on 24/7.
I always leave cellar spiders alone, i once had around 3 uk house spiders in the kitchen until the cellar spider moved in, she ate them all :)
One hid in my dressing gown and I didn't know until I went downstairs to clean my teeth (old house with downstairs bathroom) and saw it out of the corner of my eye walking on my shoulder.😱
After I'd stopped throwing up and crying and gone back upstairs to put on my other dressing gown (I cannot wear the 1st one again until I have washed it) I inspected the sink and everywhere around it to make sure the spider had gone, in order to be able to clean my teeth.
I love nasty, big, harry legged spiders, but I keep my pholcids around regardless.
Should I just leave them with the egg sack? or should I draw a line with that? Shall I let them hatch in my home?
