we called them that here in the PNW too, or at least as far as I know. my grandparents were raised in OR/AZ thats where I got it from, I was raised in WA and my friends used that word for harvestmen too. matter of fact I didn't know they were called harvestmen until I was in my 30s, I taught my kids to call them daddy long legs. And we just call crane flys "crane flys" for what its worth.
Also in western Canada - not sure we even have cellar spiders here - never seen one, and crane flies are sometimes called "mosquito eaters" - for some reason, they obviously don't eat mosquitos ...
I used to be confused as to which was a daddy long legs, so I didn't use the name to avoid getting it wrong. Since I've got more into entomology I realise it's not the best name to use so I just go by their other common names or their taxonomic ones.
I’d heard or read that it was a regional thing, with the British referring to crane flies (which sounds right to me in England), and the Americans and Australians meaning the other two kinds, although that doesn’t sound quite right after watching this video. 🤷🏻♂️
We just lost a cellar spider that lived above the cat food for a year or two. We called it Harold, and he passed away about a week ago :(
rip harold :"(
This really helps! Who hasn't seen at least one of these guys?!
I vote for harvestman. We've always referred to them as Daddy longlegs here in southern indiana
That seems to be pretty consistent in the Midwest!
