    This actually doesn't look like that bad of an idea. It wouldn't suck in any hotter air than your air vents for the cab do (seeing as how it's the same intake point). So long as the drains are working, water getting in shouldn't be much of an issue, though it might be a good idea to put some kind of shield over the top of the filter so water doesn't drop straight into it (or just block up part of the intake grille above it).

      the holes are on the drivers side of the cowl no holes are directly above the filter

      I keep meaning to put a sensor on the entrance to the air box, not just the intake manifold air temp sensor, to see how incredibly hot the under-hood air is after passing through the radiator.

    • @RavenRedwood
      @RavenRedwood 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can also do a cowl intake from the driver side through the factory airbox. And no, it won't take in any water.

  • @RavenRedwood
    @RavenRedwood 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    If you do a cowl intake I'd recommend picking up a vortex throttle body spacer from Rough Country for like 50 bucks, it improves airflow from the small cone filter and makes a sweet whistling sound to boot

    Nice kit and fit etc. however, the noise and air cleaner replacement seem a bit too much to deal with. Most of the air intake kits are supposed to bring in cooler air for engine improvements which we all may know doesn't go so well with the "high" air intake benefits for water etc. Actually, the cowl area doesn't breath well at low speeds so the hot sheet metal and engine radiant heat will raise the ambient temps during slow driving. The air cleaner replacement is rather cumbersome as well plus the added noise isn't really a plus in any form. If the focus is on river crossings, this is a neat conversion but for any other driving need, it's likely go more negative features. Great video showing the process.

  • @williamwarner3982
    @williamwarner3982 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    "Nice and secure and no movement " unlike the engine. Needs an acordian tube. I did one myself with an elbow in the factory air box and a flex tube into the cowl. Used epoxy to seal the air box 3" hole on both ends. Works great.

  • @forgottenknowledge8917
    @forgottenknowledge8917 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I noticed you kept the crank case hose connected to the intake. You should run a catch can or just simply vent it underneath by extending the line, and blocking the hole where it connected to the intake. You're still getting heat because of it.

    The tp sensor, mass air flow sensors are all located on the throttle body. Putting this unit on does not effect emissions because it does not interfere with the sensors. I live in ca and have this unit. Took it to smog with it on passed with flying colors.

    If anyone is watching this in 2021, THOR now has their CARB certification and the kits come with the certification sticker. I don't know when they got that done, but I was just watching this in preparation for my install, and when Tim said these weren't legal in CA, I shit a tit. Went looking around the internet for CA law, and had resigned myself to having to swap the factory airbox to pass the biannual check. Goddammit. But then, lo and behold, right there in the product page, I see it says "Legal in all 50 states". So I check my parts box, and there's the CARB sticker! hell yeah man. fuck the police.

      LOL, I recently bought my 2nd THOR intake for my 91 XJ that lives in SoCal (Joshua Tree) most the year and specifically had it shipped to our cabin in Mt Rainier to avoid the California frustrations. Same deal, when we got up to our cabin I popped the box open to find the CARB certification decal that now allows me to get my rig smogged without having to swap in the stock air box.

    I have the Spectre version of this on my XJ. Not sure which I like better... seems like that THOR filter could get pretty wet being in the exposed cowl, where the Spectre model has it inline under the hood. Went with the Spectre because it's CARB legal for here in CA. Jeep is looking great!

    • @pezter65

      Jeff Chappell I was wondering if you put a carb legal sticker on it would it pass through inspection?

    • @jeffchappell4856
      @jeffchappell4856 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've wondered the same thing and I'm not sure. I believe the technician will plug the CARB number in to log it and verify the part is what you say it is. But something without markings or logos could pass through as long as the sticker is related to an intake application for that year and model.

    What about heat soak? Aluminum is extraordinarily good at conducting HEAT. The aluminum tube crossing over the top of the engine at close proximity will certainly have a significant warming effect on the air coming in from the cowl. IMO, the choice of metal for the tubing was a poor design choice. Stainless steel would have been a far superior material and steel conducts heat far slower than aluminum.
    Something to consider which means a follow-up video detailing how the cowl has performed over a period of time would be appropriate and appreciated.

    Two things:
    1. Aluminum intake tube transfers heat (like aluminum does) from hot engine bay into the intake tube. If you really wanted it to do you some good it should be insulated, or at the very least ceramic coated.
    2. Those mesh filters (like K&N, etc) make a bit of power by increasing the airflow vs stock filter. They do this by NOT FILTERING. Sure, they keep out the rocks and birds and rabbits, but they don't filter out dust fer sh!t. And dust will kill your engine. Ever see a K&N filter on a desert race truck? (a REAL desert race truck...not yer jerkoff cousin's 85 blazer). No, they use intake filtration that's actually designed to feed the engine clean air. Kinda like the stock XJ intake air system was.

    • @dustinshort6207

      Dylan Cox not really, heatsoak is mainly from the buildup in the engine bay, having the pipe run over the engine won't change much, also the pickup is from the outside air so the intake is cooler. the positives out way the negatives.

    • @CurrySoSpicy
      @CurrySoSpicy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      allthings possible yea with out evidence, what he is saying is a complete farce. I would say even with the routing over the engine. The air coming in is much cooler, and the small amount of time it is in the intake tube before being consumed by the engine is not enough to heat the air substantially. Even though it may get heated up a little, probably still cooler than the stock air intake. Plus cowl intakes are "cool" anyways.

    • @westonwilcox4907

      Water will not get into the filter, there is no holes in the cowl on the passenger side, only the driver side.

  • @reowhite4862
    @reowhite4862 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have to say this doesn't look like a practical set up. In fact it looks like a bad idea.i could see lots of problems coming from this setup.. 1 the engine not getting enough cool air and gas mileage going to shit. 2 self tapping screws into sheet metal are gonna eventually strip out unless you plan on never changing your air filter. 3 Wich brings me to another concern . Is that air filter going to be easy to find off the shelf at your local parts house or is it a special order? 4 water drips down the cowl pannel while it's raining outside. I can see the potential for water to make its way too that filter.

      A snorkel wouldn't last 10 minutes on some of the trails we have up here, it would get ripped away from the mounts while driving off-camber right up against a tree. I've had the cowl system installed for 5 years now with no problems.

    • @jkvinsland
      @jkvinsland 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It doesn't have to be deep. Simply nosing down into a relatively shallow body of water can be enough to suck into the stock intake. With the intake in the cowl, you're pretty much certain to never take in water unless you're being really stupid.

    • @scooter2nc

      Clay Sensiba It moves the filter into the cowl area to bring in cooler air and creates more space in the engine bay.

    • @StuckBuckinaTruck
      @StuckBuckinaTruck 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's main purpose is as a snorkel. Instead of having a snorkel hanging off the side of you jeep to get hung up on trees and brush it is inclosed in the cowl. It is plenty high in the engine bay and keeps the splash out. If you got water higher than that then you have other problems.
