a 20C drop in air temp result's in about 7 or 8% denser air i think? I'm not sure it's going to make a big difference in power by itself. I did a similar thing for my XJ, it was more to raise the intake a bit though. With one of these you don't have to worry about ingesting water until it's over your hood, and it doesn't look poser like a snorkel does, and it doesn't catch branch's and shit.
Where did you place it on the xj? Currently my hydroassist gearbox/resevoir are blocking me from fitting the stock air box in. Hoping this is a better option then the cone im using
Great video, Nate. Cool product. Would be interesting to see the difference in temps without the wrap. Not to say one shouldn't use the wrap, but the kit doesn't come with it.
I like the idea of opening up more space in the engine bay where the air box is deleted. Makes more room for aftermarket components.....air compressor, onboard welder, inverter, blender.....
I installed my dishwasher there, using a pto from the engine, water from the wipers. Clean yo shit in no time. You ever seen a 4k rpm, 180hp, 4.0l washer clean a T shirt?
Hey Nate! You told me to watch this when you saw my filter sitting on the throttle body on the trail. Gotta say I'm impressed with the difference in temps. I'm gonna have to try something like this. Also I like that you made it clear that this mod is not a huge boost in power alone. Combined with exhaust it makes a night and day difference though. Thanks for the sweet content! Hope to wheel with ya again!
Instead of putting the intake into the cowl, just move / add onto the stock intake so a 3" duct to in front of the radiator. Lots of cold air out in front of the radiator.. cowl inlet pumps engine noise into the cab.
Its number one on the "most rewarding things I've ever done" list. I did it 100% myself, didn't buy a pre-built stroker, and it is SO worth it. Tuned and Dyno'd at 321hp, and 490ft/lbs. Its funny pulling up to a honda that thinks he's all that. leave him standing in his tracks picking his jaw up off the ground that a lifted, armored jeep can beat him in a street race. I just need to find the time to mount my supercharger....
have this kits on my 95 xj works amazing!! been there many puddles over my 33in tires spraying water all over and no issues with water getting in. have even dropped the whole front end into a mud hole water up past my headlights and never sucked water in works great! also great seeing actual test with it
Douglas Hefner I've been contacted by a bunch of people who love this Intake! I wanted to show real world data that reflects the results people are getting in the real world! Glad to hear you enjoyed the video
I very much did!! it also works great as a snorkel as I said above as long as your not trying to get water over your hood lol. eliminates having a giant snorkel sticking off your driver or passenger side that can get snagged on tress and such.
Caveat to just doing the intake mod to see changes in power. If you live in a hot sunny environment, and/or if you spend more time in slower traffic, it will probably make more of a difference. The colder it is and the faster you drive the less of a difference you will see in temperature as the under hood components can't get and stay hot as easily
Just put one in my XJ. It is awesome. I now have room for a second battery, too. The unit sounds great and allows me a little more wiggle room when fording these Florida swamps.
Did this on my ZJ and love it. I'd like to add a drain channel but it sits right behind the computer so you cannot go forward and going down takes you into the cabin. Driven through a few heavy down pours and no issues yet. The prefilter is supposed to help some water separation supposedly. Had to get a throttle body spacer to make the stock rubber 90 work with the PVC. Lastly I cut the black plastic so I don't have to remove the wipers when I clean the filter. Great mod!
I've got a decent size cam, header, and a couple other mods and I've had best luck with my snorkel for sure. This is a nice setup too if you can keep the rain, snow, and/or ice out. With a snorkel, you can turn the intake backwards to keep out heavy rain and dust as you drive.
Oh, I know it :) I've got it too. My family (currently) has 5 VWs in the "stable", and I've used it on all of them for various things. That's not even counting the previous 5-10 VWs we've owned and used it with.
I think I would fab a small sheet metal baffle that sits just above the filter to shed water coming in from the top, make it fasten to the two upper scews holding it to the cowl. It wouldn't inhibit airflow and it would stop water from hitting the filter and potentially getting sucked in. I think the drains will take care of the rest.
I'd be curious to see how much clearance there is between the filter and the wiper arm linkage, at a glance it looked like there could be a potential clearance issue. Definitely clever and something I'll be looking into. Great video as always!
I see 150-180 deg F intake air during the AZ summers here, and acceleration is sluggish, even with my appropriately geared 4.0 on 31s and 3.73 gears. Also, I have a 99, so the intake temp sensor is in a different spot and I think this causes the temps to be much higher due to heat soak from the exhaust manifold.
I’ve been looking at something like this for my LJ. I live, drive and wheel in very hot climates. In July my IAT was near 170•f while sitting in traffic!!! Having said that, the THOR is a poor design. Crappy filter doesn’t clean air for shit, and the filter is a pain in the ass to get to. If you get water that high, it’s a downhill shot straight into the motor… The Hauk river raider is by far the best choice
I have made my own version of the thor cowl intake for my xj, and I used a waterproof chemical on the prefilter to eliminate water getting to the cone filter. It is not 100% water proof but it still breaths and cone stays dry.
I saw Tim use one of these on his XJ. I wonder if this would be a good idea if you live in an area, like I do, that gets a decent amount of rain fall every year. I have a Chinese brand snorkel that I added to mine. Could get pretty wet.
I live in Virginia and at least for that part of the east coast goes, we get some pretty heavy rain when it does decide to fall. Just wondering if it would be worth it, given the chance it might get soaked.

Its offset from the cowl vent, as long as you have the cowl with a single vent in the middle. And with those single cowl vents you can get small scoops to help cover it better.
@@natebleepinjeep9564 drain holes already exist in that cavity, and any small amount of rain water that does get sucked in won't pose any issue for a engine
Nearly a year later my THOR TJ kit didn't have a vent hose either. But i have a whistle thanks for your vid now i know i shouldn't have one like i do and its likely vacuum (previous owner liked to unplug things that aren't working right )
It does. Even more so if you add one of those cowls over top of that vent. But be sure to place the cowls opening facing the windshield and not the front of the hood 😎
I like the stock air box it does a good job. I think you could do something like that to draw cold air directly into the air box I think that would make a large Improvement. Not as much as the THOR intake though.
A major problem with the stock box is that 'horn'...if you go through standing water fast enough, it can splash up into the engine bay and sheet against the underside of the hood due to the surface tension and that factory intake will suck it right in.
@@crumpb63 that's how I did my first snorkel. I cut the horn section off and opened the hole up and ran my snorkel Into the factory box and sealed it all up. It worked perfectly!
Are you worried that you would get rain or snow or other things in the in the intake since it's such an exposed area would rain affected a lot would do ring it sucked into the air and take from their. Would a rain downpour effect it will get sucked in to the engine. You made a very good point about Allen irritate and take should be on the outside. Very good video thank you
Nice work Nate. I have one thought (unsolicited). The header wrap is a good ideal BUT it will heat soak on a longer drive; what about a reflective insulated foil wrap that would reflect radiant heat from the engine compartment? Might be a good video..
would have run the test twice personally I think just due to the fact that if you did the factory box right after the new one likely the engine was hotter in general, but if it had the new setup had same temp air the second time(after running factory with higher temp) it would be fairly conclusive at that point. Overall I really like this setup and had the idea myself prior to finding some companies providing the stuff, I think I will do it to my cherokee eventually. Really hoping to get some improvements to mpg even if it is very minor. Also the placement makes a lot of space in the engine bay which is a nice bonus... good place to hide my crack cocaine
The only downside that I can think of is that it would seriously effect the time it takes for my heater to start blowing hot air into my cab on these Michigan mornings. Product looks great though.
Nice, it's almost a snorkel too, and you can remove that huge air box from the engine bay and put other goodies in there like a dual battery setup or something. Any worries about when it is raining that it might suck some water into the engine?
Vinny Gullotta You're looking at it the same way I am! I think it's sweet that you can move the inlet of your intake above the hood Without adding a snorkel! And the added room under the hood is a huge bonus!
I LOVE THIS DESIGN ,and I want one. first off I have. Question , on your factory air box you had the intake horn opening type tube coming out of box turned differently than I’ve ever saw one. Toward the middle of the engine. Mine is turned toward the fender. Would not that tube be taking in ALOT more heat turned that way toward middle of the motor where a lot of hot air is versus the tube turned the correct normal way toward the fender drawing in air AWAY from the motor and gettin air more so from grill right at the light. Does this not skew your test and basically make it void ? I ask this cause even before I saw this Thor model or the Spectre I had a similar idea of a CAI with a tube there. And I think these designs are only true way to get air anywhere close to right above ambient temperature. ( besides the factory first Gen Nissan Titan which has its intake come from inside front driver fender well) I’m just wandering what the numbers would be if that horn shaped intake tube suckin air into intake box was turned the correct way like all ours are ? Don’t take me wrong I’m not trying to be smart butt. Just trying to get accurate test results. I love the way you thermal wrap everything and that you told everyone that they need to add other mods to amplify this mod ( like exhaust ) . So now you need too remove the wipers and the panel every time you change or need too clean you're filter? And when it snows you got to remember to clean the snow off the opening? Not too mention the heavy rain on the filter as the engine is trying too suck in water.

@@natebleepinjeep9564 I always try to support you guys. Y'all are the best channel/tv show to watch. Straight to the point and informative. Every other channel feels like they are just doing it for the money with 10 minutes of forced boring junk, here it feels like you are doing it for the viewers.
I had this issue with my xj as well, when I bored my throttle(renix) there was a base bypass hole in the bore that I filled with epoxy(ISV took over anyway with a proper throttle plate setting) boom! noise I say was 90% quieter. I was shocked, no whistle unless cold and really giving it a thrashing. Something to look into maybe?
Couple other things. Does this hamper the air flow received in cabin ? I’d it blocking air to the HVAC system and can you change filters by just pulling the tube out from the template inside engine or do you have to take the body part at windshield off each filter change ?
The best tho is when your helping your bro work on HIS rig and say. ‘I wanna do it’ and he says no because he doesn’t trust you...then proceeds to drill the 3” hole in the wrong spot...smirk😏
I think the IAT differences will be much higher sitting in traffic or on the trail at low speeds. At least some of air in the engine bay was being circulated at 55mph. The cold air intake was drawing air in from the outside anyway. I think this test minimizes the difference in IAT's. For every 10 degrees F of IAT drop, you make 1% more horsepower.
I just installed one of these on my LJ, did anyone that installed it have issues with the silicone hose being stupidly tight to get on the TB and the intake pipe? Also i got a rubber grommet of some sort and i have no idea what that was for since it was only one, and the instructions never mentioned it.
Matt Boelts I asked about the grommet, they said that some tjs and ljs came with a sensor in the intake tube. So you would drill a hole in the tube then slip the sensor and grommet in the hole.
Good to know, they might want to add that to the instructions. Also Mine came with a template so when I had to drill the hole for the filter it was easier.
So as far as the oil cap can the tube be cut and flex hose added to get around the oil cap cause it looks like from the video that the tube is going directly over the oil cap, I'm really interested in installing this thor on my jeep but I need to know if it's gonna be better or make it more difficult
@@terranovnicek1567 Depends on what a person considers "ricey" and what a person uses they're vehicle for. As far as a good way to get the coolest air possible, a snorkel is one of the best ways. Some people don't need a snorkel either but in my case I use mine and would've gone through many engines if I didn't have one. Sometimes it's a necessity for me since the road I live on floods damn near every time it rains. I agree that probably 90% of people that have one don't need one and get them for the look though. Also, I know most people don't raise their diff vent tubes and seal up their electronics too.
@Riddle me this... Batman. I don't make videos but theres plenty on the internet already. Look up extending diff vents and sealing electronics like your distributor or any other part you don't want to water inside. And what connectors are prone to letting moisture in.
snorkle will win in virtually all departements, except that it puts a hole in your shit, and is goofy if you dont intend to go swimming with your vehicle. This option is a good option if a snorkel is a bit too hardcore for someone, like myself.
Wait a second. I think you just blew my mind....... You can datalog jeep's ECU with VCDS?!?!?!? Why the A.F. did I never even think to try connecting my vagcom cable to something other than my VW?!?!?
Lift the wiper up before you lift up, set the wiper arm on the tab you lifted up to get them off, leave it in that position, then reinstall and just do the opposite... what a hack, and remember I made that Jeep...
To remove the wipers. Fold the wiper up first, then the retaining tab will move freely

That aluminum piping cools very quickly I would think with the header wrap it would hold hot air in rather than help cool intake Temps
While the aluminum cools very quickly, it will also heat very quickly. The wrap helps keep the engine bay from heating up the air in the pipe.

So now you need too remove the wipers and the panel every time you change or need too clean you're filter? And when it snows you got to remember to clean the snow off the opening? Not too mention the heavy rain on the filter as the engine is trying too suck in water.
How cool does it help to put ins if the hood scoops over the vents. Especially if face it forward ?
What is the data logger you are using?
Tim Daigle It's a program called Ross Tech or VCDS. It can do a lot with Volkswagen computers but can pretty much only do live data and DCT's with other obd2 computers.
The bleepinjeep discount code for the prefilter doesn’t work?
Not like the engine was already warm or anything when you put the factory intake back, I'm sure it affected it
Great video
roxas the rogue Thank you! A lot of work goes into these
@@natebleepinjeep9564 I always try to support you guys. Y'all are the best channel/tv show to watch. Straight to the point and informative. Every other channel feels like they are just doing it for the money with 10 minutes of forced boring junk, here it feels like you are doing it for the viewers.
roxas the rogue thanks so much man! That's a very positive review!
What about the mass air sensor , does it have a place for it ?
I installed one of these on my XJ and it added a ton of engine noise to my Cabin. I like the idea behind it but way too loud.
pra3t0rian I've heard the same thing about the xjs so I was suprised at how quiet the engine noise was in the tj! Very tolerable
It added a whistle to my ZJ but far from being too loud.
Something to look into maybe?
damn you scarring me into not wanting to do it on my xj now... A bit of sucky noise is fine but my xj is already louder than I would like inside.
Couple other things. Does this hamper the air flow received in cabin ? I’d it blocking air to the HVAC system and can you change filters by just pulling the tube out from the template inside engine or do you have to take the body part at windshield off each filter change ?
Hey bro, remember that time you drilled the 3” hole in the wrong spot on my Jeep...
The best tho is when your helping your bro work on HIS rig and say. ‘I wanna do it’ and he says no because he doesn’t trust you...then proceeds to drill
the 3” hole in the wrong spot...smirk😏
Eddymatch 14 lol
Great video!!!!
Nice. Is there any room for an intake from the front grill area?
So as far as the oil cap can the tube be cut and flex hose added to get around the oil cap cause it looks like from the video that the tube is going directly over the oil cap, I'm really interested in installing this thor on my jeep but I need to know if it's gonna be better or make it more difficult
Or use a snorkle 🤔
The snorkel is the best I've found for many reasons.
Snorkels are kinda ricey and you don't really need your intake that high up
@@terranovnicek1567 Depends on what a person considers "ricey" and what a person uses they're vehicle for.
Why the A.F. did I never even think to try connecting my vagcom cable to something other than my VW?!?!?
should have moved the intake air temp sensor out of the manifold where it gets cooked by the header and into the intake
Man Bleepin was way better with this guy 🤣
Shuld put a catch can in the pcv line.
I have a home brew version on this on my xj
What kind of wrap did you use
what happens when you have to drive thru a heavy snow storm or cold start after a heavy snow storm and the vent gets plugged with snow?
wouldn't have made more sense to do the data on the old one before you took it off so you don't have to take the new one off again
That filter looks hella small!!!
And hella over priced
Hey, where does the filter line up with the grate in the cowl? Any concern about water coming through onto the filter?
for this intake do I have to worry about water?
Lift the wiper up before you lift up, set the wiper arm on the tab you lifted up to get them off, leave it in that position, then reinstall and just do the opposite... what a hack, and remember I made that Jeep...
Hello.
I have a 2005 Jeep Tj x.
It has an air Sensor on the tube.
Does it means that this kit is not gonna work for me??
When it rains, will the intake suck the water into it?
Also, does the PCU need to be programmed with this change?
Nope your MAF makes changes on intake air temp. Just think that every day is not the same temperature outside.
great vid, but i'd love to see some real dyno numbers.
Still not as cold as one made in Alaska or Antarctica..... Sweet video though 👍🏽
Jeeping Adventurer A true fan! Lol you're finding me everywhere
just add a scoop on the intake to protect it from rain
Is there something similar to this for the XJs?
And were you reading the temp from the OBDll or did you have your own sensor?
yes, we have a video on the xj install too.
@@bleepinjeep Sweet, I remember seeing that one now, did you use a OBDll for the temp or did you have a separate sensor for your computer?
have you got any check engine light after the installation of this kind of filters?? i have a tj 2005
Would this work on a '88 Comanche?
That’s gonna be a shopvac, good luck
And with a cowl scoop, hmmm
sscottphillips1973 my brother and I had the same thought!
Just put one on my yj, facing the windshield, there's you another debate topic, makes a difference in the flow inside the jeep
I wish you would've recorded your time up the hill, too
