Ripley: Yes she behaved differently on the ship initially with the Marines. But consider her perspective. She's out of her time - 57 years have passed. Yes she stood up for herself at her hearing but she *lost*. Her license was taken away. She has no support network - her friends are likely all dead just like her daughter. So by the time she's on the ship with the Marines she's pretty beaten down. And then she's with Marines. She was a flight officer for a civilian cargo vessel - Marines are going to be pretty intimidating. And they're a crew. So breaking through to that group is going to be hard to do. She tries - she does make an outburst when she's initially ignored where she warns them and she's deferring to their skills. But as she sees that fall apart she speaks up / acts more and more. Honestly I thought it was a pretty believable portrayal. Yes she has professional experience and confidence, but it's not uncommon for that confidence to be knocked back in very new situations. And Ripley's dealing with loss, professional setback, time travel and a very intimidating organisation. Oh - and not a small amount of PTSD from the events of the last movie. That's a lot to overcome - and she does but not instantly.
I think I agree with everything you say I really just had a problem with one scene (her debriefing the marines) but that's it, still one of my favourite movie characters ever
True. Since Ellen is also a depicted as a very serious by the book professional, she probably initially relaxed when told she would be working with what people typically would expect to be the most professional. But instead get: "Great, I'm working with a bunch of children. Again!" (Newt excepted) This also explain why she didn't persist all that hard to explain things. Because she probably already did. The professionals simply didn't read the memo, let alone "the very detailed report". Because they thought they would be up for anything. Could of course also be the company toned down or somehow misplaced some information, for reasons. So her swings from controlled to frustration are still quite apt for the characters situation I think.
Mr. Parnoid is actor Bill Paxton and passed in 2017. He was a prolific actor but typically had supporting roles. One of my favorites was him in the movie Weird Science (1985). The ad-lib line, "Game Over Man!" was from the actor thinking his character was a gamer who played simulations.
@@ptthatswhatshesaid Weird Science also had a TV series based on the movie. I would classify it as Super Science like a mingling of science, supernatural, and magic. It's basically a Teen Fantasy come to life.
As for why nobody closed the ramp, if you look carefully during the 'escape', you'll notice Newt is the one who actually hit the switch to close the ramp.
First of all, RIP Bill Paxton or Pvt. Hudson. Aliens is the greatest sci-fi ever made as far as I'm concerned. Its certainly the Citizen Kane of the sci-fi / action / horror genre. While Alien was a masterpiece of horror and suspense, Aliens may be the most tense and exhilarating experience in film history. Im still disappointed that Sigourney Weaver didnt win Best Actress. Its great that she was nominated for a sci-fi but Sigourney Weaver and James Cameron created one of the greatest, strongest, most iconic female roles in film history. Her Ellen Ripley is right up there with Cameron's own Sarah Connor in T2 and Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind. BTW, if you love the characters of Newt and Hicks, and Ripley for that matter, avoid Alien 3 at all cost.
yeah, the only thing that I really didn't liked in the third movie is that it renders what happened on the second movie a bit pointless... such a bummer (still like it though.. 🫣) Sigourney Weaver is the best. period 👌
25yrs ago, i went to a thing called Alien Wars, and it was a small section of that complex with the strobes and flashing lights all industrial looking. There was a space Marine who lead a group of us round the complex. These things were reaching out and grabbing you, and your running through this set up. He says things like "we need to get to ops, well be safe there". At one point you're standing there while the marine is checking out the way ahead and viscous stuff drips on you and you look up and one of these things is above you and starts hissing, and you can see all the teeth and the slime dripping off them. The marine reappears shouting "we need to get to the elavator". We get there the elavator comes up the door opens and a fricken alien jumps out and it's like two feet from me. I just froze staring no doubt with the dumbest look I have ever had on my face. The marine screams "run" after that you're off again and he shouts "through those doors, go, go,go," and next thing you know you are outside, the doors close behind you and you are at the exit to the street. I have to admit I was no Ripley, Newt would have been toast. You are only in it for about 15 minutes but your heart was pounding all the way through it. It was one of the best things I ever done.
I went on that too, and from memory the most stressful part of it was the moments when you were left standing, waiting, with a high-pitched sound coming from somewhere while you knew something was about to happen...
This was a separate movie , with a different director . Ripley does not have to completely align with the character in the first movie . This was an adventure ( popcorn ) movie with something happening at all moments , much like today's movies , where attention spans are very limited . The Alien was MUCH better aesthetically in the first movie , 'Alien' , It was designed by H R Giger , and much more realistic .
I thought it was the same design used to be honest, just with more recent technology (H. R. Giger is designs are amazing by the way, I've seen his museum in Switzerland, its great). I do disagree that this being a different movie with a different director means a character seen previously don't need to align, but I also think she is the same character in this, just don't like one particular scene: the marines debriefing scene.
The fact that, in a vacuum, it's good to investigate things and try to discover new ways to improve humanity - which of course it is! - doesn't in any way excuse a company sacrificing people for profit. That's the most bizarre take I've ever heard about this movie, or maybe about anything in my whole life :)
Ellen Ripley is one of the best characters in the entire history of cinema, she is the perfect hero, with exceptional charisma, who does what needs to be done and without any need for powers or other kind of magical stuff. please, don't spoil the good memories and good feelings that these two movies gave you by watching the other movies after these, if you want just watch the 2004 movie "alien vs predator", which is not bad at all, the other movies either are garbage (in part or in whole), or simply ruin what was done with the first 2.
What are you talking about. Nice opinion but Ripply was badass. She was emotional because of what she went through, she had PTSD and she was going back to try to deal with it. She had to live through it again watching the captured settler go through what Kane went with alien bursting out of her chest. She learned that her daughter died and she missed out on her life. And now she has to keep check on another chd that lost her family and marines that are green to what she had seen and a person in charge who was also green. Ripley couldn't be cold like she was in the first because she didn't go through anything until the alien showed up and crew started dying. She had more to deal with this time around.
I agree, she was all that. And still is one of my favourite movie characters ever. That debriefing scene with the marines is the only one that I have a little problem with, and even then its just a little thing
There is a little 'teaser/cliff hanger' at the VERY end of the credit that I have yet to see any reactor respond to!! As the last credit scrolls up the screen you can hear the wind blow and the icky-squishy sound of an egg opening up. That being said, don't bother watching Alien 3.
I prefer Alien to Aliens. Because I prefer suspense and mystery to action. I think what you don't know is scarier than what you can clearly see. Besides Alien back in 1979 was groundbreaking. Aliens was just more of the same with better special effects, easily attained with better technology not yet available in 1979. Last but not least, Aliens had more plot holes than Alien. That final scene was unacceptably stupid to anybody who knows physics.
now you have to do the third movie t get the end of the story. Ps : Predator 1 and 2 should be an interesting reaction :) considering the predator/ Alien universe have some movies crossovers .
No...Alien 3 doesn't have to exist in anyone's mind. Don't get me wrong, I like that movie, but, being a long-time comic book reader, I can twist my head canon into believing it's an alternate universe. The true sequel to Aliens is the Dark Horse comic book by Dennis Beauvais...it would have been so much better than what we got with Alien 3 (again, I liked Alien 3 as a standalone movie, just not as part of the story...only my opinion, though...I should have said that part first).
Predator is a great suggestion yeah! I might do the 3rd one as well in the future. I know a lot of people don't really like that one (I myself kinda feel bummed out because its such a feel bad movie), but I think I still like it as a closure of Ripley's story though
