Part 2: 2. You remarked about the easy and open "discovery" between the prosecutor and defense atorneys. This is quite common and expected in the military practice of law. At a certain point in time, it is of course REQUIRED by the law -- especially by prosecutors informing defense counsel. But in the military -- unlike the civilian world of legal practice -- there is generally FAR LESS "GAMESMANSHIP" betweem the opposing military attorneys. They are professional colleagues and military officers where "your word is your bond" and they are often friends outside of the courtroom ... so there is much greater collegiality and easy exchange of information that must be discovered anyway. I ALWAYS made it a point to jave my paralegals prepare a FULL COPY of everything I had in my evidence file to give to my opposing defense counsel ASAP. That's the decent, professional thing to do, and it often facilitated guilty pleas and streamlined courtcases because there were NO unfair "surprises" or "hiding the ball" to gain an unjust advantage. Even as a prosecutor, my FIRST and PRIMARY DUTY was to seek JUSTICE -- not merely "secure a conviction at all costs." 3. Finally, there were several irregularities I noted in the movie as well that might be of interest to you and your readers: a) The JAG Symbol in the court room. You may recall that the setting of the trial was supposedly taking place in a Navy-Marine court room in Washington D.C. (probably the Washington Navy Yard). Yet if you look closely at the front of the wood podium behind which the Marine Corps prosecutor is questioning the witness (see beginning at the 31:49 minute mark of your video, off-and-on for a minute of action or so), you will see a same color wood circular seal containing a crossed sword and quill pen. That IS indeed a JAG Badge symbol -- BUT it is the seal of the U.S. ARMY's JAG Corps ... NOT the U.S. Navy's JAG Corps !!!!! Each service JAG Corps has its own seal/symbol, and the Navy's is a mill rind (not a crossed sword and quill pen). Additionally and by contrast, the seal/sympol of the U.S. Air Force JAG Corps is a balanced scale of justice resting on the Air Force crest/shield, all surrounded by a laurel wreath. I realize that this is a minute detail that most folks wouldn't recognize or care about -- but to someone who was an actual AF JAG and had friends/attirney colleagues in the other service branches and knew their seals/symbols, it was quite noticable and glaring. b) The court room theatrics -- and especially the disrespectful tone and abusive language directed at certain witnesses, the judge, and superior ranking officers was pure "Hollywood" for entertainment only. While litigators can on occasion engage in spirited sparring and point-making, it NEVER rises to the level dis[played in the movie. People could NEVER get away with such disrespectful antics, cussing, denunciation, etc. in an orderly, professional, and dignified MILITARY court room -- nor would they ever even DARE try !!! c) The joint trial of the two accused Marines. While not a complete "impossibility" technically speaking, trying both defendants together in a court-martial is HIGHLY, HIGHLY IRREGULAR ... and is so rare/unheard of that I NEVER was aware of it occurring all my time spent in service. But crtainly for "Hollywood purposes," it was far more expedient to lump the two defendants together and not waste screen time on separate trials. d) The supposed "crime" of "Conduct Unbecoming a Marine" (the sole offense for which the two on trial were convicted) is a FRAUD. NO SUCH CRIME EXISTS under the provisions of the UCMJ (see above). Hollywood completely fabricated that offense/charge, and it's very disappointing to me that they did -- because it was completely UNNECESSARY that they made that choice. The PROPER charge they could have written into the script -- that would have been believable and which COULD have resulted in an actual convidtion -- would have been a charge under one of the "General Articles" of the UCMJ. There is such a criminal offense under Article 133 of the UCMJ known as "Conduct Unbecoming an Officer and a Gentleman" -- but it is reserved solely for, and specific unto, OFFICERS ONLY. In other words, because the two defendants in the movie story were young enlisted Marines and NOT Marine officers (like the prosecutor, judge, Col Jessup, etc,), the Govwrnment had NO ability to charge them with "conduct unbecoming" under Article 133 of the UCMJ. HOWEVER, Article 134 of the UCMJ is the "general Article" that could and should have been invoked. Article 134 of the UCMJ covers offenses that fall within the rubric of "Conduct Prejudicial to Good Order and Discipline, OR of a Nature to Bring Discredit Upon the Armed Forces" THAT is what the two Marines could have been charged with (and convicted of, even after being acquitted of the murder and acquitted of conspiracy to commit murder). But I guess the PROPER and ACCCURATE charge was "too big of a mouthful" to put into the script, so Hollywood FABRICATED a FAKE crime which doesn't exist under the UCMJ called "conduct unbecoming a Marine." I hope this commentary helps you and your readers.

Hi Danien & Lucy ... You had asked about jury selection in military courts-martial. I can help you and your readers with this because I served as a Judge Advocate ("JAG" -- military lawyer), and conducted a fair number of trials. I have a lengthy commentary that I will need to break down into a couple parts. My commentary will not only address your question(s), but also cover several observations about this movie that were somewhat incorrect and divorced from reality. Nonetheless the movie was very entertaining and I enjoyed it. Part 1: 1. Jury selection in the Military: This is done by the "convening authority" -- who is the military commander responsible for ordering the court-martial to take place. The people who are selected and detailed for court-martial duty are RANDOMLY selected by the Convening Authority. ALL people who serve on a military jury MUST be of the same or senior rank to the accused. Typically, a court-martial panel of jurors consists of a selection of different officers (junior, mid-level, and some senior) ... BUT the panel CAN also include senior enlisted personnel IF the accused is an enlisted service member AND specifically requests enlisted members be included on his panel along with officers. There is no such thing as "ONLY" enlisted panels, and if the accused is an officer, he can NEVER have enlisted members serving on his panel. During voir dire in military trials, the attorneys have an unlimited number of challenges for cause available to prevent biased jorors from being seatred. In addition, each side (prosecution and defense) typically is alotted 1 peremptory challenge ... but the prosecutor virtually never exercises it. In "lesser" trial cases, the court is called a "Special Court-Martial" (SPCM) and generally handles "misdemeanor" offenses. Ususlly in the Air Force (which was my service branch) the commander responsible for ordering the SPCM is the installation host wing commander -- typically a full colonel at least and sometimes a 1-star (Brigadier) General. As a result of the SPCM being a "misdemeanor" forum, there is a jurisdictional maximum confinement sentence up to 1 year allowed in this forum. Additionally, in the SPCM, there are jurisdictional limitations on the other available components of a sentence as well if an accused is found guilty: more limited $$$ fines/pay forfeitures and limited reduction in grade (rank), plus a less severe punitive discharge characterization available. For example, in the SPCM, the worst possible punitive discharge the court-martial could impose upon a convicted service member would be a Bad Conduct Discharge (BCD) -- but there is no "requirement" that a punitive discharge necessarily "has" to be part of the sentence imposed. (If a service member is convicted in a SPCM and yet NOT sentenced to a punitive discharge as part of his sentence [e.g., suppose he "only" gets a few months in jain and reduction in grade/rank], then it's still possible -- depending on the seriousness of the offense of which the person was convicted and his service record -- that the military could nonetheless decide to kick him out of the service anyway via ADMINISTRATIVE discharge separation. But that's an entirely different process than a court-martial [the latter of which is a military criminal trial, the other is an administrative proccedure]). The jurisdictional maximum punishment components available in a SPCM override the maximum sentence components available under the provisions of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ); the UCMJ is the criminal code governing ALL military offenses and service members, and it is written by the U.S. Congress. In addition to the criminal statutory code (UCMJ), Congress also promulgates the Military Rules of Evidence (MRE) and the Rules for Courts-Martial (RCM) -- which of course govern the procedural laws and rules for what is allowed in conducting military trials ... and the MREs and RCMs STRONGLY resemble -- with some slight differences -- the Federal Rules of Evidence and Federal Rules of Procedure for civilian trials brought by the Federal Government. The UCMJ, MRE, and RCM -- along with several other important appendicies and forms -- are compiled and published in a single work known as the Manual for Courts-Martial (MCM). The UCMJ is a complete "soup to nuts" criminal code governing service members ... it naturally contains statutes covering "typical" criminal offenses found in every civilian jurisdiction (e,g, murder, robbery, rape, assault, burglary, etc., etc.) .. BUT it ALSO contains statutes for "uniquely military offenses" that don't exist in the civilian world, but which can be serious crimes in the militart (e.g., disrespect, disobedience, failure to pbey a direct lawful order, AWOL, dereliction of duty, hazarding a vessel, sleeping on post, etc., etc.). More serious crime allegations -- such as murder -- are of course felonies and are sent to a General Court-Martial (GCM) -- the felony forum -- where the severity and length of sentence components available are CONSIDERABLY longer and more severe, and the worst possible discharge characterization can be imposed (e.g., not only a BCD, which is still available, but ALSO a Dishonorable Discharge [DD]) can be metred out as part of the sentence). In a GCM, the maximum number of years of confinement available is only limited by the CUMULATIVE TOTAL of the number of years the UCMJ authorizes for EACH offense of which the service member is convicted -- so it can add up quite more substantially than the SPCM's 1 year jurisdictional maximum jail sentence. Not surprisingly, because the GCM is so much more severe is potential impact, the "convening authority" who must authorize the trial is a MUCH higher ranking commander -- frequently a 3-star (Lieutenant) General in command of an entire Numbered Air Force (again, that's how it is in the Air Force ... but the other service branches no doubt employ the same convening authority distinctions: full Colonel [rank of "Captain" in the Navy] or 1-star commanders for a SPCM, and 3-star general/dmiral commanders for a GCM.

Those "Black Stormtroopers", as You called them, are known as "Death Troopers" and are a special forces unit under the Imperial Intelligence's Death Trooper Division. These élite soldiers act as Special Assignment Commandos and are deployed as protective details for high-ranking officers and Imperial officials. They are often seen guarding the interests of the Tarkin Initiative, a top-secret research and development organization often affiliated with the Imperial Military Department of Advanced Weapons Research Division, eventually led by Orson Krennic. Death Troopers were selected according to extreamly high criterea: candidates had to be at least six feet tall, exceed standard stormtrooper training requirements in strength, endurance, agility and posses unquestionable loyalty to the Empire and It's ideals. Candidates were trained in a wide range of diverse enviorments to render them as abitabile as possible. Their helmets posessed a vocal scrambler to mask communications and a micro-motion sensor. A heads-up-display, or H.U.D., system aided in identifying enemy and ally units in the field. The black pauldrons they wore detailed the rank or specialisation of a particular Death Trooper. This could only be seen through the lenses of another Death Trooper's helmet, rendering them even more anonymous. Their equipment featured a enviomentally-sealed bodysuit that protected It's wearer from contamination most hostile enviorments. The armour was coated in a special substance, known as "reflec"that rendered a person invisibile to most scanners. Trained in improvised weaponry, guerrilla warfare, demolitions, hand-to-hand combat, marksmanship and usage in heavy weapons. Operating in small squads, each Trooper specialized in a certain specific skillset, to maximize combat efficiency. Classified cybernetic and genetic enhancements rendered these graduates "beyond human", allowing an increase in stamina, strength and One's natural reflexes. I highly recomend a video called "Death Trooper Secrets" by the Channel "The Lore Guy" for more information, if You are curious...

While there are issues with bringing dead actors back through CGI, the production had permission from Carrie Fisher's family. Although there has been some dispute after-the-fact regarding who had the rights to allow Peter Cushing's likeness. My problem was more with how it ended up looking. Tarkin was fairly close, but I think they shouldn't had given him as much screen time or as many close-ups for us to focus on what didn't look right. For Leia, the skin color wasn't right. She looked way too pale. Especially since she has much more color in her face right at the beginning of "Star Wars" that this is made to lead right into. Also, there is a real human face in the guy right behind her that she got the plans from in the same shot with more skin tone on his face while Leia looks almost gaisha-like. Overall look and expression were well done - just needed to bump the saturation up.

To see how rampant use of AI turns out you can jump over to Warhammer 40k and read about the time between the 15th and 30th millenium aka the dark age of technology and the age of strife. Spoiler: It doesn´t go well for humanity.

@@Lifter999 Nah, I get how AI can run rampant. I'm just theorizing why you never see a ship with a personality, etc. and the droids really need to work alongside humans, rather than replacing them.

When you talk about how inaccurate the regular storm trooper is you have to remember that the empire had to supply all of them across the galaxy with weapons. So those weapons are basically crap. They are inaccurate, uncalibrated, bottom of the barrel weapons. As they level up in experience to the brown and black troopers they get the better weapons. So all the white troopers, even if they are the best marksman.. are given horrible equipment to work with.

More specifically, they actually are accurate - in ANH they're _supposed_ to miss - Tarkin ordered them to. In every scene where they're meant to be accurate, they are, only hindered by environment (smoke, cover, that sort of thing). They actually win most of the battles in the original trilogy.

Hello Daniel & Lucy!😊 The Imperial Royal Guard (Red Guys) are supposed to be the top trained among The Empire. They are used to protect The Emperor, Darth Vader, and other important characters. Not surprising, Lucy was most upset about the death of the robot.😉😆 I did think Lucy would like this film more, too. Yes, fans have complained about the weird weakness in the Death Star in the first film for many years. Great reactions to this well made sad prequel, Guys!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

MALDIVES! Excellent Lucy! That’s exactly where they filmed the Battle of Scarif! Actors who have passed away were brought back to life with CGI, or had scenes filmed from the original trilogy that were not used, were now resurrected for the final battle. The similarity to the original trilogy that you didn’t like was intentional. You haven’t seen the prequels where fans felt that Star Wars may have lost their way as CGI was used so much, that any sense of realism was lost. Simpler practical effects were meant to capture the ‘feel’ of the original.

This story takes place after The Clone Wars. Saw Gerrera is a character originally from the Clone Wars cgi series. where he was much younger fighting along side his sister. The Clone Wars themselves went on for many years and involved many star systems. Part of why Darth Vader went to the Dark Side was his growing angry at the heavy losses and the Jedi failing to deliver the win.

In regards to the way Darth Vader using his light saber in this movie ('17) compared to against Obi Wan in Ep4 ('77) about a week later ... Obviously technology was better ... My theory in explaining it was when DV was fighting OWK he took his time in order destroy OWK to feel pain but of course DV failed...

The fact people joke about the accuracy of the stormtroopers is ironic. I think they were supposed to be expert fighters. Kenobi says in the first movie that only stormtroopers are so precise. I suspect that the joke stems from plot armor. In many movies, shots fired at our heroes have to miss. Also, the Nazi stormtroopers, as I recall, were an elite group.

    • @snorpenbass4196

The first movie, the stormtroopers deliberately miss on the Death Star because they're not meant to kill them - Tarkin had a plan (they put a tracker on the Falcon and allowed them to escape so they could find the base). In all the other scenes they're extremely accurate and only hindered by the environment - one even gets Leia in the arm in RotJ.

I don’t think Darth Vader appearing at the end is fan service for several reasons. It sets up why he is so frustrated at the beginning of A New Hope. It also must occur in the climax for this to work as a movie in its own right. The actual goal of the movie has been to steal the plans. There must be an adversary trying to stop them at the climax.

There was a plan at the beginning of the Disney era SW of having stand alone movies once a year that would be called "Star Wars Stories". Solo was the other movie from this series. The lackluster money made by Solo and the backlash against the sequel movies caused Disney to pump the brakes on the stand alone movies. Kenobi was going to be a movie and made into a series. Boba Fett was another one that was turned into a series (with the help of The Mandalorian show).

*This is not a George Lucas story.* This movie steals from Akira Kurosawa's _Seven Samurai_ (1954). Kurosawa is one of Lucas and Spielberg's favorite directors. _The Magnificent Seven_ (1960) westernizes (literally) Kurosawa's story. The 1954 and 1960 movies are waaaaaaaay better than this Disney-fied blegh version.

The accuracy of a stormtrooper's shots doesn't have anything to do with the armor they wear, and everything to do with whether a character needs to be shot or not.
