Pretty good list. Glad to see Elijah Craig small batch on there. With ECBP & Larceny BP and other HH products, this seems to get overlooked. This was my first go-to quality value bourbon many years ago.
I would recommened/like Old forester 86 over Old Forester 100. You guys knocked out of the park, but I think Larceny Small batch is a great Journey beginner...Also in my area far Western Kentucky at $28 I would also recommend Buffalo Trace. I know is allocated in areas, but was my favorite beginner bourbon
Nice review! Starter bottles for me were the following. 1792sm batch, Elijah Craig sm batch, Knob Creek 9, Russell’s 10yr, Eagle Rare, Evan Williams single barrel, Jack Daniels single barrel select, and Four Roses single barrel.
I agree with yall bottles except the JD bonded lol not for me. But when I started my journey a few years ago, my first bottles were 4 roses small batch, Jefferson's, bulleit, Elijah Craig and Woodford .
we love some of the benchmark but we were trying to add some things we dont really talk about all the time. i.e. Benchmark, redwood empire, still austin, just to name a few....
@@j.b.6855 That’s funny, I was ABC store hopping and picked up this bottle 2 days ago for $38. Haven’t opened it yet but if it’s as good as you say I may need to go back and get another one.
Totally agree about the Wild Turkey 101! It was one of the first bottles I bought, and being new to bourbon, I found it way too hot. It took me a while to come back to it. I love it now, but I think beginners should stick to low proof offerings. Buffalo Trace is a great beginner bourbon. I also love Old Forester 100. Also, when I started drinking bourbon, I drank everything over ice. I think it helps you get used to drinking bourbon. I feel no shame about it. I would encourage everyone to do the same.
Woodford Reserve is one of the best introductory Bourbons. It's not my best distillery, but they seem to be doing a good job in capturing that segment of the market with their Woodford Reserve Straight Bourbon.
I know they are allocated, but I went to Buffalo Trace and got an Eagle Rare for 40$ and I would easily pay 60$ for this compared to other bottles I own in my first months of growing my selection, so I would say it's a great beginner bottle. Definitely my favorite so far of the BT intro lineup. I also think Weller SR is quite solid and prefer it to the 107. If you can find it for MSRP, it's 27-30$. Really good deal, easy beginner bourbon as well.
I Wish you guys could have gotten hold of a bottle of the new 90 proof Jim Beam Black 7 yr. I'm curious if it would have presented well enough to be included in this lineup. I never thought I could like any JB product ... but I like this one.
Russel's 10 and Larceny small batch were two of my memorable first bottles. I agree with the EC small batch shout out. Great stuff guys and have a good weekend!
Can't argue with any of them ... its a shame that Evan Williams Single Barrel isn't generally available, because that was my own introduction to single barrels with some flavor, and the lower proof made learning to sip neat very accessible.
Started my journey in 2023. Russel’s 10yr, Early Times BIB and Redwood Empire’s starter lineup were ones that got me interested in exploring deeper. Collection is up to 77 bottles now 😅
Another great video with a great selection. Here are some that I recommend for beginners: Russell’s Reserve 10, Bowman Brothers Small Batch, Cooper’s Craft Reserve 100, Blue Note Juke Joint and Blue Note Crossroads. Buffalo Trace is another good one especially if you can get a store pick single barrel. I have four different Buffalo Trace store picks that cost me the same as the regular and all are amazing. I would even recommend the Jack Daniel’s Bottled in Bond Rye. I just picked one up on sale for 28 dollars and it’s phenomenal. Once again thank you for putting out another awesome video.
My first two are Michters sb bourbon, and larceny sb. But I just got a bottle of Knobb Creek sb 9yr and is my new favorite so I'm gonna be looking for more around 100 proof. Also love Beam products and Jack Daniel's so I might get a bottle of their single barrel products even though they're high proof, I like spirits so I don't think it'll be off putting for me being that.
Cooper's craft 100 proof.
Its $30 near me, and easily goes against bottles twice its price.
@@j.b.6855 same here in ohio
Larceny small batch, michters American whiskey, JD Single Barrel(black label)
Redwood empire pipe dream is tough to beat for beginners.
Pretty good list. Glad to see Elijah Craig small batch on there. With ECBP & Larceny BP and other HH products, this seems to get overlooked. This was my first go-to quality value bourbon many years ago.
Wolf Moon bourbon $25 in OH. As a beginner it’s simple and good.
Woodford Reserve Double Oak also nice for the price.
I would recommened/like Old forester 86 over Old Forester 100. Big fan of OF 100.
Nice review! Starter bottles for me were the following. 1792sm batch, Elijah Craig sm batch, Knob Creek 9, Russell’s 10yr, Eagle Rare, Evan Williams single barrel, Jack Daniels single barrel select, and Four Roses single barrel.

Early Times BiB is one I recommend to anyone new or seasoned.
Woodford Reserve, KC9, Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey 101, Michter's Bourbon & EC Small Batch
I agree about Very Old Barton, it seems to get forgotten even in the bottom shelfer tier lists and it never dissapoints.
The JD Bonded really surprised me. It is fantastic. Lots of great flavors. Love it.
Redbreast 12 year , Redwood Empire Pipe Dream , Still Austin bourbon & cask strength
1792 small batch started my obsession.
1792 is a caramel bomb, the small batch is good, but I like the bib just slightly better.
kinda surprised you guys didnt include any of the benchmarks
Love the BenchMark SB
we love some of the benchmark but we were trying to add some things we dont really talk about all the time. i.e. Benchmark, redwood empire, still austin, just to name a few....
In California, you can find Buffalo Trace in every grocery store or liquor store for under $25. I would put BT at the top of the list.
I’d start with Coopers Craft, Bowman Small Batch and Rebel 100.
If you can find the Rebel small batch reserve BUY IT! 111 proof for about $30 near me. Honey and vanilla for days.
@@j.b.6855 That’s funny, I was ABC store hopping and picked up this bottle 2 days ago for $38. Haven’t opened it yet but if it’s as good as you say I may need to go back and get another one.
One of my benchmark bourbons, and still go to bottles for roses small batch select. Totally worth 50 to 60 bucks.
Totally agree about the Wild Turkey 101! It was one of the first bottles I bought, and being new to bourbon, I found it way too hot. It took me a while to come back to it. Knob creek 9 is easily the best bourbon in its price range I think. So tasty
To many people pass on the VOB due to price thinking it’s junk when it’s actually very good for the price point
VOB 86 proof is swill.
I knew I was going to like this list as soon as all 3 Green River options were rolled out first.
Ancient Age, Old Grandad bonded, Cedar Ridge bourbon single barrel store picks, wild turkey 101, very old barton
Woodford Reserve is one of the best introductory Bourbons. It's not my best distillery, but they seem to be doing a good job in capturing that segment of the market with their Woodford Reserve Straight Bourbon.
Agreed. Personally I would grab a woodford reserve over Buffalo Trace every time
Four Roses single barrel was my gateway bourbon. Still enjoy it.
I know they are allocated, but I went to Buffalo Trace and got an Eagle Rare for 40$ and I would easily pay 60$ for this compared to other bottles I own in my first months of growing my selection, so I would say it's a great beginner bottle. For some reason all my friends who are new to bourbon all seem to love my bottle of the regular George Remus Straight Bourbon.
I Wish you guys could have gotten hold of a bottle of the new 90 proof Jim Beam Black 7 yr. I'm curious if it would have presented well enough to be included in this lineup. I never thought I could like any JB product ... but I like this one.

Great stuff guys and have a good weekend!
All great choices. I’m a big fan of the Green River products. The Jack Daniel’s Bonded is probably my favorite on the list.
My beginner bottles were JD SBBP, Woodford DO, Ancient Ancient Age, ER 10 YR, RR 10 YR,
Mine were Woodford Reserve and Elijah Craig small batch.
Can't argue with any of them ... its a shame that Evan Williams Single Barrel isn't generally available, because that was my own introduction to single barrels with some flavor, and the lower proof made learning to sip neat very accessible.
Totally agree on Green River for starters, but when I started it was Buffalo Trace, Weller SP, and Jack Daniels Old 7
1792 small batch
Evan Williams Bottled in Bond, Wild Turkey 101, Elijah Craig Small Batch, Coopers.
Started my journey in 2023. Russel’s 10yr, Early Times BIB and Redwood Empire’s starter lineup were ones that got me interested in exploring deeper. Collection is up to 77 bottles now 😅
Early Times BIB, Old Grand Dad 114, Bardstown Originn BIB.
Great list. Happy to see the EW 1783. Even better, the annual Heroes Edition should be coming out soon. The new Beam 7year seems to be making waves.
Another great video with a great selection. Wild Turkey 101
Russell’s Reserve 10 year really got me interested in trying new bourbons. For $30 in my area it’s hard to go wrong
My first two are Michters sb bourbon, and larceny sb. But I just got a bottle of Knobb Creek sb 9yr and is my new favorite so I'm gonna be looking for more around 100 proof. Evan Williams 1783
I'm FAR from a beginner, but I am done buying overpriced bottles.
Store picks in the $40-70 price range are where I'm living my life nowadays.
Benchmark Top Floor
Coopers Craft 100
Russell’s 10 year
Early Times BiB
No Turkey? Great list though.
we always talk about turkey, trying to talk about other things..hahah
Good video but you need to check your title, 2023?
Um the title says 2023. Lol
