Same as all of the above - I might buy a pricey bottle now and then to sit on for an extremely special occasion, but Old Grandads, the new Jim Beam in this video, Rebel, Makers & Elijah Craig are always around. Found a couple budget Scotches that I really like as well.
@skippypeanutbutter9136 my first night drinking it, I had enjoyed it - not so much the 2nd or 3rd time I tried that bottle. I won't be buying it again. Just tried their single barrel @ 108 proof the other day - reminded me of caramel corn with peanutbutter.
Could not agree with you more! They need to take a page from Anders Erickson's cocktail site - my absolute fave - and actually print out in the description below the bottles they are tasting.
I have to chime in, like others in other videos, I love the close up of each bottle, and especially the super zoom by so we can read the details - I missed that in this video. Love this video, overall. You guys continue to rock it. I've been watching for years and really appreciate the thoughtful improvements to video and presentation quality. And for keeping things light and fun without losing integrity!
Hey Trent, it’s “Mon-on-gah-hayla” rye. Named after the Monongahela River valley in Western PA, it’s one of the oldest types of whiskey in the country. It fell out of prominence with the intro of Bourbon, but I’m glad it’s making a resurgence!
Awesome to see Cedar Ridge getting some love. I live about 10 minutes from the distillery so I get spoiled a little on their releases, just pick up a single barrel 7 yr rye, there is a single barrel honey finished rye in the wild close by that I may end up with as well.
That James E. Pepper is an amazing bottle. 🔥After the first tasting, I went back up to the store and got a backup. Such a great easy sipper with lots of flavor.
It's pronounced Mo Nong Gah He La. It's a river that runs through Pittsburgh. 3 River Stadim was built at the confluence of Allegheny, Monongahela and the Ohio rivers.
Really enjoy watching your videos!! You guys are awesome. Loved your top 15 “budget” bourbons. My only recent disappointment is the early times bottled in bond. I probably bought 10 bottles of that that were just outstanding for the money then it became almost impossible to find down here in North Carolina. It’s now back on the shelves and at least the bottles I bought are pretty awful such a disappointment. it was such a good deal and an awesome tasting budget bourbon.
Always look forward for these type of videos from you guys! Y'all have made some great recommendations in the past that I've enjoyed, like the Balcones Cataleja and Westward Cask Strength. Can't wait to see your review on Knob Creek 10 Year Rye!
May I ask one favor. Is it possible to closeup on the label for a second or two when you introduce the bottle? Fun and informative reviews as usual. Thanks
I’m over by Fort Wayne, but if you have a Costco over in your corner of the state, stop in and see if they have that Hard Truth. I picked up the 4 Grain for around $47-$49.
I run past Widow Jane's in Red Hook. I'm usually in the "zone" but the wonderful smell of the distillery snaps me out of it and I find the need to linger around their open loading doors.
I’ve been to Hard Truth Distillery twice in the last year. After enjoying a nice lunch in their restaurant I headed over to tasting room for a tasting flight. Both times I chose their four-grain bourbon as my favorite, by significant margins, over other products in their line; a very nice whiskey
Getting into whiskey for the first time this year. Bought a bottle of the michters barrel strength not knowing much about it. I was totally blown away and have been recommending it since. Glad to see my uniformed opinion is justified! Keep up the great work.
Wow, so much information to learn from.... I'll will save up try some higher prices. I'm enjoyed every new bottle I have in my small bar. It is my wife and my 36th Anniversary today and this evening I'll be making her some lemon Drop and I'll have a Rittenhouse Highball. For an dailey pour I enjoy Jim Beam 7 yr, Wild Turkey 101 Rye, Wheel Horse Rye, just to name a few that I learned from this show. Can't thank you enough for your help.
If Michter's sourced MGP Rye.. and you loved it, then try the Smooth Ambler's Old Scout Barrel Proof Rye. $35 35 BUCKS! And it's great! Shockingly good. Aged and bottled in W. Virginia. You gotta give it a go. At that price point, how can you go wrong?
Just bought the pikesville rye on your guys recommendations but I was that impressed. I thought the michters rye tasted overall better. How ever the pikesville being at 110 proof makes it far more worth the purchase. There is a more complex flavor profile as well but I think michters is easier to drink when it comes to the flavor. Best rye I've ever had wad a mitchers 12 year or a wellers if they made a rye i really can't remeber. I know inwas blown away by all 3 wellers I've had. My go to bourbon would be the green label wellers. Absoutley insanely good bourbon at $45
Really like SLB, been following for maybe 2yrs. I really like their budget buys, but I have to say I did go out and pick up the the JB Black 7yr and I MUST have gotten a BAD bottle. It was undrinkable…..so bad I contacted JB directly. Besides this one I do like most all the other choices….just wanted to put our a watch out on JB.
Agree, I almost get sick just saying Jim Bean. But everyone is different. There are a few listed here I haven't tried that I'll give a shot and I might find them good or nasty.
I'm here in South Carolina. High Wire has excellent offerings, the Peach Brandy finish is great. Alex Helms other there has been doing a great job making excellent whiskey.
Great recommendations. Loved this video. I live in Cedar Rapids and going this week to see if I can find the Cedar Ridge Bottled in Bond Rye Small Batch. Good to see Cedar Ridge making these bourbon videos. Love your videos.
I guess i'll have to give Ceder Ridge another try. I tried their mainstay bourbon a handful of years ago and was very unimpressed with it. I think I used it as a mix, and I haven't gone back to their items since. But maybe they've gotten better, since you both have seemed to really enjoy their products lately.
Great review and agree on most--I think the Beam 7 is good at $21 I pay for it in Texas but no way is it as good as Knob Creek 9 for only a bit more money. Trenton, Only Drams app gets better with each update! Congrats!
Just watched this vlog and always very informative. I am particularly interested in Rebel Small Batch as I have not seen this locally and had not previously heard of it. I do like Rebel 100 as an inexpensive every day wheater. How do you find these two compare?
The Pepper is absolutely delicious. Rich and flavorful. I’ve only seen two bottles in my area and bought the second after one taste of my first bottle.
WTH. I was watching wondering which one am I going to get. I finished thinking if I don’t get all ……… love the channel. Happy to be a Patreon. I’m going broke or divorced. Love the SLB COMMUNITY. Great video! Add New Riff 6-Year Malted Rye - 100 proof! It has a note that reminds me - just a little - of the Sagamore Double Oak Rye! I believe both of you will enjoy it!
Hard Truth has just become available in in our area of Central Wisconsin. Under the Henry Sipes label they offer 4yr. Double Oaked Bourbon and a Rye, both at 90 proof. Local price is $20. These both are surprisingly very good considering the price. These are great whiskeys for mixed drinks. Both are good neat, but the rye is my favorite. They now have a permanent place on my shelf especially for mixed drinks.
Some mighty fine picks here boys! I'm hoping Hard Truth starts coming to my area had a buddy get a bourbon and the rye and said it was some very good whiskey. I'm torn on the Buckner 10 it's right at my cap but I've heard so many people say its fantastic. I'm a big rye guy and I have the A Overholt but haven't opened it yet and being a native Pennsylvania I'm glad they are bring back old recipe rye. Enjoy!!
Another vote for the James E Pepper. Absolutely delicious! Larceny B524 has been a favorite so far as well. I got an Old Forester Rye from a friend. (not available here) It's different and delicious with 20% barley for a different pastry like vibe. Just a few of my fav's so far.
Sad thing is that none of these are available where I am though I have hopes for the Jim Beam. We do have Rebel but what I have found is a single barrel store pick (and quite enjoyable) only. I have seen Michters but nothing recently though the store I saw it in I have not been to in almost a year.
The A. Overholt really surprised us this year. That bit of malt just makes it so much more complex and enjoyable. Same goes for the Jimmy Red Corn. Tastes so dusty and funky to us. There's a ton of Dark Arts out here that we've found during our hunting videos, if you ever need help finding it. And the guy's name is Macaulay Minton. Michter's does produce their own rye distillate now, and has for a few years. The only thing they're not producing themselves are the 25 year bottles, which are still MGP. Great video again, guys!

Yeah! Jimmy Red. I had the same experience. I went to a tasting based on a store owner recommendation and really liked it. They previewed their next release, even better.
I thought the red corn was really good, if you can find it. I think they are re-releasing it this year. Otherwise the straight bourbon cask strength is tasty.
That jimmy red bottle is insanely good. That James e pepper decanter bottle is also delicious. One of my personal favorites. Bought a second bottle while I still got the chance.
Rebel is a great value and nice 2024 surprise. Four Grain Hard Truth has got to be one of the best of the year, and just 30 minutes from my house. I can't wait for their single barrel to come out. Good endorsement of Little Book...$160 in my area so it would be a special occasion bottle for me, too. One of your longer videos but great content. I could see this being a live stream and diving deeper into a select handful of these. Thanks for the great video.
Trent I’m not a rye guy but the Still Austin bottle and Bond Rye is really good. It is a limited release only in the spring each year. It has a rabbit on the label. You got to check it out my friend.
I watch these guys all the time but they really get my attention when they talk budget pours….my wheelhouse.
I have to buy "budget" stuff most of the time - I can't afford anything else. 🙂
Same as all of the above - I might buy a pricey bottle now and then to sit on for an extremely special occasion, but Old Grandads, the new Jim Beam in this video, Rebel, Makers & Elijah Craig are always around. Found a couple budget Scotches that I really like as well.
@@KneeAches I find so many enjoyable bourbons and whiskeys under $25.
@@permanentfitness1919 new jim beam was disappointing. I was expecting a drastic improvement. In my opinion it's only a slightly better cheap mixer

The James E Pepper Barrel Proof, at least the one I got, is great!
I agree, its rapidly become one of my favorites.
Just cracked opened a bottle last night and it was a fantastic pour. Mine however was 104 proof, not 106 like Trenton said
It's pronounced Mo Nong Gah He La. It's a river that runs through Pittsburgh. 3 River Stadim was built at the confluence of Allegheny, Monongahela and the Ohio rivers.
