There's SO MUCH MORE to say about Jem! The playsets were functional devices! A speaker! A radio! The music was shockingly good! The voice cast was iconic! The original Jem doll had light up earrings, just like in the show. Mine still works! Barbie gonna Barbie, but Jem was pure class!

Jem and the Holograms is still one of my all time favorite cartoon series! The story, the characters, the music, the voice actors all fit together so perfectly. I also love how the show had music, drama, romance and even action all mixed together. I do wish they'd make a new line with the dolls looking like the actual cartoon characters in their original outfits. The characters in Jem were all so pretty. Also, a complete soundtrack would be much appreciated. ❤❤❤

I used to be team Barbie in this debate, but after the Toys That Made Us episode I had to take Jem's side. My sister and I had 4 Jem dolls and 4 dancing Rockers, but I thought Jem was a better cartoon than a toyline. My first Integrity Toys doll was Riot from Jem because I was binging reruns and got interested the character since he was the only male singer but he never got a doll in the 80s. Barbie botched that Rockers reboot, then OMG came up behind them and killed it with Remix.

To be honest, Jem was a better show, but I thought the dolls were slightly ugly. Not just because they made them bigger which is probably why they cost more than Barbie, but the facial expressions were off for me.

The Jem superfan in me is screaming!!! The cartoon is one of my major comfort shows!! The gold outfits represent the Glitter & Gold episode and accompanying song, which is a very iconic moment in the series. Additionally, Clash was never a Misfit, just desperate to be one. Clash and Video are actually cousins, and their real names are Constance and Vivian, respectively. Danse's name is just Danse LOL. Apart from the Integrity Toys line, there's also a modern comic series running that's really good!!

JEM will forever be my 80s fave doll line !
The Dolls themselves were of top quality !
    Those fluo fashions,crazy haïr,outrageous make-up !!!
They were FULLY poseable and could even cross legs and hold their accessories...
And...those BOXES !!!Pure ART with flashy colors and beautiful portraits of each character.
And who Can forget those tapes including three songs...the latter were beautifuly written and some songs have definitely become hit singles aming fan like "Depends on the mood I am","I am a giant","I like your style"or"Glitter and gold"...
Last but not least,thé greatest innovation were the playsets!!!
Guitars ,cars and keybords that turned into tape player or FM radios!!
The JEM backstage that turned into a speaker or those Video madness mini playsets that could turn the JEM stage into video backgrounds to recreate some of our favourite video clips !!
Just wished Hasbro had released their final bunch of Dolls(including Régine )as well as a JEM dollhouse !!❤❤❤

Rumor has it that Hasbro had a Jem doll box at a trade show in Asia around Nov of 1985. After the show the Hasbro sales person throw the box away and the Mattel sales person went through the garage and shipped the Jem doll box back to California. The Misfits are not pictured on the Jem box, so it sounded like the Misfits were a complete surprise to Mattel. I was told this by a Hasbro employee who was told by a friend who worked at Mattel - after the Toys That Made Us, I tracked down Judy, but she said it was only a phone call. But yes, the ethnicities of the dolls are just to similar and really the clothing silhouettes are too. Example the Asian American Hologram had a t-shirt, fish-scale skirt, and tights while the African American Rocker had a t-shirt, skirt and tights with pattern similar to the fish-scales. Some of the jackets and colors of clothing are similar but mixed up for other dolls - Barbie’s colors being bright is rumored to be because the illustrations on that Jem box were much brighter than the actual Jem doll fabrics. First year Rocker playsets were all reused from the 70’s, so Mattel could get them into production quickly. Jem had the piano stage in 1986, but the Rockers had the Cafe with the guitar shape in 1987 and Jem had the KJEM radio station with pretend guitar the same year. I love this topic obviously 😂. Oh, the cartoon coming out 6 months before the doll was to make it look like dolls were inspired by the cartoon. There was already a big backlash to cartoons being based on toy lines.

    • @bamblerz
      @bamblerz ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well werent the hasbro dolls depicted in the cartoon that was already on the air…. And didn’t they do the whole doll/show combo with GI Joe? Feel like it would’ve been pretty easy to figure out, no?

    • @riot4jem
      @riot4jem ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@bamblerz yeah they had the cartoon and it started airing in October of 1985, before the dolls were announced at the February 1986 Toy Fair. That was to make it look like the dolls were based on the cartoon instead of the other way around. So Mattel could have looked to see what new Sunbow/Hasbro cartoons were out and known that another toy company wouldn’t just pay for a cartoon that didn’t support s toy line. 😂

Something interesting about Jem and the Holograms is that while it came out in 1985, coincidentally, there was a magical girl anime that came out in Japan two years prior called "Mahou no Tenshi Creamy Mami" (Creamy Mami, The Magic Angel) which was also about a girl who transformed into a pop star with her identity being kept secret, and this paved the way for other magical girl anime with this concept. So, between America, Japan and possibly other countries this premise had already been done several times by the time Hannah Montana existed.

I can't beat a show with transformations and cute outfits 😆

What a wonderful video. I was a hardcore Jem fan, I grew up watching the show in the 80s, but admittedly I liked Barbie and the Rockers too. I had that original Jem doll, the one that came with the extra outfit allowing her to change into Jerrica. I remember you would pull the pink hair up into the pinstripe hat and then Jerrica's blond hair would be left underneath. You would just switch out the dress and voila, "Shows over Synergy."
Unfortunately, when my parents split up, I moved out with my mom and didn't take all of my dolls with me. So later on when my dad moved, he threw all my dolls out. And not just the Jem doll, I'm talking other toys that would be rare collectors editions today like Cabbage Patch dolls and Trolls.
I had no idea about the controversy concerning the rivalry between Mattel and Hasboro. Ironically, a lot of the Jem episodes were about the Misfits and Eric Raymond trying to steal things from Jem, their mastertapes, their designs, their concert performances etc. It seems the same happened to them in the real world but in this case, Mattel was the Misfits and they won.
I didn't buy any of the other Jem dolls so I didn't know about the cassette tapes. But I did have the Barbie and the Rockers cassette and was researching my favorite song from them the other day with the popularity of the Barbie movie. It was "Born with a mic in our hand." That song was actually performed by a group dressed as the rockers at a Macys Thanksgiving parade in the 80s!
So, it is great despite what was done to the brand that Jem still has a special place in the hearts of many people who grew up with her. And while Hollywood keeps trying to ruin our childhood, (I'm thinking of that horrible live action Jem movie they did a few years ago - soundtrack wasn't bad though) there still hope for Jem to see a true resurgence.

Dear Joey! I cant thank you enough for this wonderful video. I was absolutley thrilled about Jem and the Hologrames, when I watched the cartoon on Fun Factory in 1986. I was madly in love with Jem and I purchased a RIO doll with my pocket money I got for Christmas. But I was not allowed to have dolls. I did it secretly I hide RIO under my bed, so my dad couldt discover my new doll-friend. I loved the cartoon and always had fond memories, when I grew up. In 2013 I bought the complete series on DVD. As you can see, I always played in team JEM.

I was like that too, wanted to self justify getting them "For the Tapes" but my Dad would have freaked, he already tried to shame me out of Action Figures by calling them "Dollies" Brought the DVD set on Import too, 3rd season of JEM [With the Stingers] never aired here in England

I’m in Australia and was 8 at the time. I’ll never forget going into the toy section of the department store and seeing the display of Jem. I had always watched the cartoons so I was in heaven. I knew very well Jem came first. The quality of Jem dolls were far superior than barbie & the rockers. I wish I could’ve bought the integrity versions but missed the boat. Jem will always hold a special place in my heart. I got 3 holograms for my bday in 1986. I get so emotional 😢god I love Jem so much. I got Danse and Rock’n’ Curl in 87. My heart is breaking as I type this. The music, the dolls and the fashion OMG it was heaven for my 9 y/o child ❤️❤️❤️

I had ALL of the Jem dolls, the stage that converted into a wearable keyboard, and the rolls royce that went with Glitter and Gold Jem! I had all of the albums and knew all of the songs....
    Jem was adventure!
Jem was glamour and glitter; fashion and fame!

Yes! I loved both of these lines. Jem 💫 was iconic and as a kid I would love to dance around and pretend I was her with a pink tutu on my head 🤣. I also had those Barbie dolls and that guitar play set. My heart 💖 had room for both lines even if Mattel didn’t think the toy market did. What a shame! Thanks for bringing them back to me! I’m going to rewatch Jem now!

What I liked about the recent comic series is that they did away with the silly Jem-is-Jerrica secret, because it seemed silly to force a Rio-Jem-Jerrica triangle, making Rio dumb enough not to realize that Jem and Jerrica were the same person. I had more than one of those cassettes!!!

Dancing Rocker Barbie was my first Barbie when I was 3. I loved her to bits. Still have her even, named her Melissa after one of my friends, but called her Lissa not Missy, so it wasn't "weird". 😂 Never had a Jem, too poor, but I got one NIB as an adult for my anniversary 5 years ago. And you even talked a bit about Maxie and Jazzie! Oh, my heart! TBH late 80's Jazzie and teen Skipper had the cutest face molds and paints because they were initially designed as a part of the MABA Barbie line in Japan before that deal fell through and they are so cute. 80's Skipper face molds before that were...uh...not amazing. I'll leave it at that. I'd love a deeper dive on them one day though!

“Video” was called Vivien Montgomery in the show and was a film maker, Clash was her troublemaker cousin, I had Season One parts 1-8 on VHS and watched them so so many times, but the dolls were only sold in a few stores in Sweden and I never even saw one, but one of my friends used to travel to family in Sudan and had gotten the Jem doll there I was incredibly jealous, I loved the music.

Every afternoon when I was in college, the TV lounge of my dorm floor was full of people watching these cartoons. Jem and the Holgrams was the favorite. I honestly think the guys liked it better than the girls. I remember one guy telling his roommate to shut up because Jem was on. It was the perfect wind down time between classes and dinner. I bought myself the Synergy doll because she was so frickin cool. She spent my college days posed on my desk. Sadly she was lost when the basement flooded.

This is so 80's, so ICONIC ! Thank you for this video.
Despite the fact that I was obsessed with Barbie in the first place, I Lived for Jem and the holograms too!!! I litteraly dreamt of these dolls and play sets. I would stare at the toys catalogue for hours like a complete idiot.
My heart was spilt in 2 between the two range of dolls
But my mom didn't like Jem and the holograms dolls at all. She thought the looked tacky, cheap quality, and looked like bad drag queens. She found that that barbie was better quality, more refined.
Soooo I never had anything Jem. #childhoodtrauma. 😂
Except just one outfit, that my grandmother had mistaken for a barbie outfit 😅
They had reboot Jem dolls in the 2010's (I believe) they were very expensive, with very beautiful details, make up, face molds and outfits, they meant business! and were obviously targeted for collectors.
Anyways thank you so much for this video 💕💕💕
    Hugs

(And I was one of those kids who had a Jem and the Holograms lunchbox, Jem and the Holograms casette tapes, a Jem and the Holograms themed 12th birthday party, and more.) My sister and cousins and I definitely preferred Jem and the Holograms to Barbie and the Rockers. Thanks for the education about the dolls and the tv show we loved so much!

The ONE grudge I hold against Barbie is how ruthlessly she killed off Jem😭😭 Barbie and the Rockers was so bland to me and never came close to matching Jem in the level of storytelling and depth given to its characters. And those SONGS!! So much love went into the whole production and it’s evident throughout the whole run of the show. I fell in love with Jem as a middle schooler in the 2010s and that should speak to how much of a timeless classic it is despite how unabashedly and wonderfully 80s it is

Thanks so much for bringing me back to my childhood. I grew up in The 80's and I Loved both Barbie and The Rockers And Jem. Barbie and The rockers Barbie was my very favorite doll as a kid. Unfortunately I lost her when we moved and I was so upset. Thankfully sometime in the 2000's( Not sure what year) Mattel rereleased some of their decade dolls and she was one of them so although I wasn't a kid anymore I had to get her. I had never owned a Jem Doll but a few years back I found a doll of my favorite Jem Character on Ebay and I had to buy her. It was Jetta from the Misfits and she wasn't in the box and She was missing her shoes but I wanted her. Now both dolls sit on a shelf with some other dolls.

I own 2 of the 1985 dolls. I found them at thrift store. They where not complete, everything was missing. But at least they weren’t broken, scuffed up or had marker all over that I always see in local thrift shops. They were in very good condition. I bought Jem and the one with purple hair. I had plans to repaint them, but never got around to it. There boxed up along with other rare dolls that I’ve found in thrift shops.
Been wanting to sell the jem dolls online but I don’t have the patience. I seen how expensive they are. When I only bought mine for $8 each.

I’m watching it again 😂 I was going to say and keep forgetting - the fabrics are not a good indicator with the quickness the dolls came out in. Both Mattel and Hasbro sourced the doll fabrics from Asia, so they wouldn’t have to pay import and shipping cost to get the fabrics to the factories. But I wonder if the Barbie and the Rockers fashions used pre-existing dies. Instead of cutting out the clothing, they would die cut large sheets of fabric, to save on the labor. To save on cost the 2nd year Flash’n Sizzle Jem/Jerrica, Kimber, Aja, and Shana used dies made for the the previous years dolls and fashions. So the Rockers could be using pre-existing dies to cut the time in manufacturing new dies. As special bonus, it just wasn’t Hasbro, Mattel copied Tonka’s Aurora dolls with Spectra. And Spectra’s silver lace dress is the same pattern as Glitter’n Gold Jem/Jerrica’s gold lace.
