a world of multiple kens all living different lives trying to escape? police officer ken, firefighter ken, surgeon ken... barbie bonfire ken? oh that could go to dark places :/
although lone man of the mountain ken sounds like a hilarious one as well as Kung Fu Master Ken.. but Ken exists as one of barbies excessories to extend her own enjoyment of the world and therefore only exists in ways that allows him to be various forms of excessories to Barbies Hubris and Id. It actually sounds like a super concept to explore for a robot chicken movie that would be live action and with high budget and actual.... people dressed as barbies and kens instead of the usual stop motion etc

I loved the hell out of this as a kid but I gave away my tape as a teen, like an idiot. When I was cruising eBay, about 8 years ago, looking for a replacement, I stumbled onto something- The Soundtrack!!!!! There was an actual music, not included with the dolls, soundtrack cassette! I don't know if you've been to my channel in past but I do have the FULL LENGTH VERSIONS of the songs up for people to listen to. If you haven't heard the full songs yet, oh, prepare yourself; You'll never look back once you've have. I'm glad to see someone who gushes over this as much as I do! And, yes, I would love to see other VHS reviews.

As a Barbie phobe, I know that's EXACTLY what Mattel did. JEM & The Holograms came out, and Mattel got early word of it coming out, so they conceived the Barbie & The ROCKERS line to compete. Mattel knocks off everyone and everything since 1959 when they knocked of the German street walker Bild Lilli doll and called her Barbie!

While the lack of characterization for Barbie's friends and the crazy way the time travel thing happens, I really do appreciate the way the movies were trying to make Barbie contemporary to the time of the movies production AND honor her roots in the 50's.
Perhaps it would have been better to make her have episodic quantum leap type of stories through time.

In the UK, a VHS tape was released called Barbie: Double Bill which contained both episodes and the series was called Barbie and the Rockstars. For some reason, on that tape, they switched the order of the episodes playing Rockin’ Back to Earth first and then Out of This World when it should be the other way around. Not sure why they did this. 🤷‍♀️

Barbie’s speech about world peace sounds a bit cultish which oddly seems appropriate since she is practically a goddess given her huge influence in this universe’s version of Earth.

Little late to the party here, but I found your channel via the video you did on Hey Dude, which I remember watching as a kid on Nickelodeon. As a result I've been sitting here binging on your videos on the old TV shows that were on when I was a kid. I love your reviews and your presentation style. Thanks for bringing back these little treasures from my youth!

I was searching for someone else to go through this special in detail…I literally rewatched it today and couldn’t understand why I loved it so much as a kid. No plot! No conflict! Barbie is such a goody two shoes who never stops smiling and no one ever gives the other guys any credit. They don’t even get to go to the ball!!
    Music was rad tho

Barbie and the Last Rockers guest starring Vice Squad might have sold me on this... instead I'm just going to imagine the traumatic events that young girl/grown woman went through over the years without Barbie in her life. Further tragedy would ensue when the rocking started as the young girl was crushed in the pit.

When I was a kid, you were either a Barbie and the Rockers girl or a Jem and the Holograms girl, and I was Jem all the way. This looks fun though. Wondering if you're a Home Movies fan? Your comment to Ken about moving his face reminded me of Coach: "And you really should blink. Because blinking shows that you're human." lol

Fun/odd fact: In the UK, it was released as Barbie and the Rockstars and all of the audio said "rockstars".
Also, the VHS in the UK had Rockin' Back to Earth before Out of this world, so you saw the 50s time travel adventure first and then got a prequel 😂

If you do plan on checking out there stuff, I recommend the original cartoon (VERY similar to Barbie and the Rockers, from what I see in your video) and the most recent comics. The live-action movie is.....well, it's not bad but it's not Jem. I enjoyed it but I wouldn't call it an adaption.

    • @Fracassi1

Jem was the bomb! I haven't watched it in years, but I totally remember the episode in which a girl took drugs and thought she could fly and tried to jump out her window. I don't even think the after school specials of the time took it that far. I think her guitar turned into a demon in that episode too.

I tried one episode of Jem and found it hard to get into as a 30 year male, but I was interested that my favorite Sierra designer, Christie Marx (of Camelot and Longbow fame), was the lead developer of that show (as well as Conan the Adventurer).

I didn’t know they did a cartoon! The only thing I knew about Barbie and the Rockers was the cassette single my sister got once as a promo (I think from Shoppers Drug Mart?) when we were kids. On one side of the cassette, Barbie and the Rockers sing “Rock & Roll Girl”, and on the other side of the cassette they sing “Fille du Rock & Roll”, the same song but in French. It’s a ‘90s-tastic catastrophe of a song, but we played it to death! At the time I didn’t speak French but you can bet I knew the French song as well as the English! 😏
