the start of the video was too funny bro LOL LOL LOL
    you crazy dane.
i cant believe hank just sent me the same mag rod - cant wait to try it out.
funny you should think of such a video about fire with no birch bark, i had the exact same thought this morning - what if no birch?
i know there is fatwood in softwood areas - but what if no pine etc.
good fall back item the mag rod.
good to see you out side bro - im getting cabin fever lol

So far I have found fatwood in Jack, Red, Scotch and White pines. Also Blue spruce, Eastern Redcedar and Paper birch. Dave Canterbury has mentioned finding fatwood in Red and White pines plus Eastern Redcedar.

Cool - that chopper/axe/machete/sickle/saw also makes a pretty good froe!

For the first time I've started a few fires with birch bark and the magnesium in the last couple of weeks, it works great. Not sure why more bushcrafters/survivalists are down on magnesium. Another cool video, nice hat and good fire in the wet conditions bro, cool to see the progression from older to newer videos!

+Ron Butler I think it's partly because a certain "outdoors" guru (DC) call them useless from time to time :) Thank you once again Ron :)

Pure magnesium works well. Magnesium alloys do not. Indeed, scrapings from some magnesium alloy bars cannot be ignited by a ferro at all.
Years ago DC made a vid with the fire ignited by scrapings from a pure magnesium snowshoe frame. He was very pleased by how well it worked. If you watch it, note how long and curly the scrapings are. A sure sign the magnesium is pure, not an alloy.
      Cheers! ATB.

It's easier, when you use a small ball of fine steel wool, about size of your thumb. Produces a more hotter flame for the Magnesium shavings.

I trust the viking helmet was not a mock up fantasy item, but a real deal period piece :-D An excellent video. Difficult conditions etc. Next time we expect nothing less than making fire underwater..

"Go down to the lake and kill something and do some other stuff..." That's too much fun for a modern man!! I think he is reverting to an ancient Norseman HP. I think we should call him Loki instead of Lars! :-) That is a cool helmet though

Greetings CJ!! I seem to remember hearing that about the horns too. Well, horns or no horns, clearly I could use whatever Lars is having about now.

PatriotNC1 Those horned helmets were Richard Wagner opera wardrobe fantasy pieces. German "Hollywood" of its time. They did great job! We all recognize those horned helmets as Viking. So, no problem!

    Very nice Lars!
Magnesium burns very hot, thank tree my Lynx Recce vehicle was never shot. Lynx is a M113 variant that we used before we got Coyote in Canadian Army.
I seen what happens to these type of vehicles when they catch fire > nothing but engine and torsion bars left over!
I like your cam clothes - what are they?
    Thanks Lars,
    Chris

i thought before about carrying magnesium powder, in a small container,
maybe mixed with something else (hexamine powder) .... i wasn't sure if it was a good idea or just a lazy idea, lol

Melt one end of a plastic drinking straw, such as for sodas or milkshakes, to seal it. Fill with magnesium scrapings, then melt the other end, I use a pliers to hold it closed for a few seconds until it cools. Straws from McDonalds work best of all.
These also work well for many items such as .22lr shells, salt, sugar, hot sauce, etc.
Something useful to do during heavy rains, bitter cold, etc.

There is a lot of birch bark for fire ignition. Why didn't use it?

23889John Thanks - best outdoors cap ever! It's too easy with birch bark so as i said i tried to pretend there was no birch bark:)

I think in most outdoor online shops. Try ASMC.de in Germany.
