- This episode looks at history on a macro level by examining it on a micro level as we go through the evolution of an area in Kansas at the Johnson County Museum. This by far was one of the most interesting and engaging museums that we've ever been through with the highlight being a 1950s home transplanted to the interior of the museum. Lots to see and learn here!

Wow! You certainly were correct when you stated that this should be a model for other County museums throughout the country. That was very impressive thanks a lot. I definitely have an appreciation for that home as well. All those original products were definitely the standout thing and oh by the way... We had a bright red rotary telephone at my house all the way up until 2003.. we used to call it the bat phone..... LOL! You stated people under 18 wouldn't know what that is, I would venture to Guess that people under 30 would not... Lol! Such a fantastic job I really enjoy watching your videos thanks a lot JD! My grandma STILL has a rotary phone in her house. Funny how things that were commonplace when you were younger seem like ancient history now. Heck, I showed some kids an original iPod that I have and you'd think that it was a piece that I'd extracted from the pyramids or something.
Loved that 1950's house. I was a born in 1957, so many of the homes during my childhood had simular features. Brought back fond memories. Thank you for sharing this amazing museum.

This county museum is incredible. As a museum professional I feel like any county museum could be like this if states, local government, and local communities put the money and effort into doing so. Usually local historical museums are old houses or old buildings local businesses had once occupied. The people of Johnson county are so lucky to have a place like this for their history.

The White Haven Motor Lodge sign was on Metcalf Ave in Overland Park when we moved to that area in 1999. The place closed around 2005 and the sign was donated to the historical society. It was such a cool sign. I always enjoyed driving past it.
I hope you did the Steamboat Arabia and the National WWI museums and we'll see videos of those as well. Great museums.

Just found your channel and am having fun binge watching your videos. My dad’s ancestors were one of the founding families of Johnson County so this video was extra fun for me. I haven’t made it to this museum yet but I will have to do that soon.

Loved the balsa airplane on the roof! lol! Been there, many times. It was usually accompanied by my Frisbee. :-( Those were pretty cheap, I must have gone thru a few every summer. Eventually they fell apart from too many crashes. Nose-diving into the street was a pretty rough landing. But they were alot of fun! One of your best episodes, nice job.
Wow, that looks cool! I agree, that 50s house of "tomorrow" was nice. Reminds me of our Air Force Museums Cold War exhibition, where they have a typical living room from every decade of the Cold War. Love that kind of quite recent history with old cereal brands no longer around, comic magazines etc that are typical of an era that you forgot about.. Very nice.
I love the fridge because the shelves spin and pull out. 10:35 The wooden play pen I remember growing up with one. My mom would put plywood over the top to keep my sibilings in when they learned to climb out 😅. I was born in the 80s so far from the house of the 50s house of tommorow.
I grew up in the 60's and our bathrooms were very similar to the house you showed. The phone tv all part of my live once a upon a time.

I remember researching years ago that, it was actually a 1947 american sitcom called Mary Kay and Johnny. Lesser known, especially with I Love Lucy, but if I remember I think they too were actually married and wanted to portray that, thus were the first to be in a same bed. Just something fascinating

Love the 50's house ,we had a black n" white TV like that when I was a kid, sure brought back some memories.
I really ended up liking that museum a lot. Especially that house.
The building the museum is housed in used to be an old bowling alley. The Motor Lodge used to be down the road. They actually just tore it down within the last few years. The city knew they needed to save that sign. It was such an icon.

The History Underground I have really enjoyed your videos. I used to live in Dodge City, so to see you go through that area was really great. It brought back good memories. I now live in the Kansas City metro, so to see more videos of places close to me really makes me want to go. Keep up the great work.
The motor lodge was at 81st and Metcalf if memory serves me.
I was born in 1954 so a lot of the items in the 1950's house are very familiar to me. Great tour!

You should visit Gettysburg,PA there’s are 3 places I highly recommend the visitors center museum, Seminary ridge museum, and The home of President Dwight Eisenhower
I visited Gettysburg for the first time a few years back and intend to get back there sooner rather than later to do some videos. I didn’t go to any of the museums though. Thanks for the heads up!
That is one of be best county museums I have ever seen. Some that I have seen are like a hole in the wall building.
That 50s House was cool!! I explained to my kids how to use a rotary phone. Lol
It really blew me away. I've enjoyed plenty of the smaller county museums but this one completely blew me away.

You should make a trip to Sacramento & see the Railroad Museum that is there, its packed with history & all sorts of things to see

I was down in LA, San Diego and Riverside. That was probably 15 years ago though so I’m sure that much has changed.
@@TheHistoryUnderground a lot has changed in those areas over the years but southern California will always hold a special place in my life because of my family; one other interesting place you might want to check out that is also in Sacramento is Sutters Fort, the last stop of the Donner Party Wagon Train that came over the Oregon trail, it's a really neat site to visit
My in-laws' bathrooms are still mint green and bubblegum pink/brown and orangeish. That bathroom was actually kind of tame. 😆

I discovered your channel a year and a half ago while I was on medical leave from work. Decided to start from the beginning and really enjoying this stuff. If you ever get the chance, head to Dearborn, Michigan and visit Greenfield Village and The Henry Ford Museum. You would go nuts in that place. They even have the Rosa Parks bus and the chair Lincoln was sitting in when he was shot.

Actually, the first tv show to show a couple in the same bed was " Mary Kay and Johnny.
I think the people in the 1950s were on to something when it came to separate beds. My partner and I have completely different needs for mattresses as well as bedroom temperature. We have separate bedrooms and sleep much better apart, we don't toss and turn and keep each other awake. Our relationship is good, we just need our own space for sleeping.
We had a car like that in the 50s.
The first show to show a couple sleeping was The Flintstones

Mark Kay and Johnny, was the first sitcom to show couple in bed late 40s.
First couple to sleep in the same bed was Ozzie and Harriet!!!

We went to a very interesting museum in Fairfield Utah. That might be one for you to visit if you haven’t already/
When you opened the fridge door, I thought Indiana Jones would pop out. Remember how he survived the nuclear bomb test? The house was great, loved the colours. If you ever get to Nova Scotia, visit Fortress Louisbourg & the Alexander Graham Bell Museum.

I watched this whole series and it was great, just couldn’t give a like on a single video because you don’t know how to use the word “when” and continuously say “whenever”
