A unit called "Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods" that's specifically designed to get rid of the crime hot spots in a criminally active city doesn't sound bad. The problem seems to be that the department has lowered their entry requirements, the fitness standards, the educational thresholds and focused on diversity over competence and merit. Some of these officers had a past of violent behavior too.

These 5 officers were too stupid to protect. The Floyd case was less clear cut initially. With Floyd, cops responded to someone committing a crime, who was doped up and of large size, and they did not beat him. So, it wasn't initially clear how he died. But the investigation figured it out. These 5 poorly supervised officers have to be the dumbest form of sociopath to do what they did, particularly with the benefit of hindsight after the Floyd incident. The issue in Memphis is that the entire command structure of its police unit needs to be dismantled and rebuilt with federal oversight.

Lock them up n throw away the keys after the second offense. Chief - "this is not a reflection of the good work that many Memphis police officers do every day."
I was wondering when she would get around to saying that. It's usually the first words out of their mouth. Sorry Chief, it is a reflection of you and your force.
Showing unusual transparency for a police department, the MPD now publishes accountability reports that include the race of people subjected to use of force each year. They show Black men and women were overwhelmingly targeted for rougher treatment in 2019, 2020 and 2021. They were subject to nearly 86% of the recorded uses of guns, batons, pepper spray, physical beatings and other force in 2021, the total nearly doubling that year to 1,700 cases. (This was the start of the Scorpion unit.)
Seven uses of force by Memphis police ended in death during these three years.
“I don’t know how much more cumulative Black death our community should have to pay to convince elected officials that the policing system isn’t broken - it’s working exactly as it was designed to, at the expense of Black lives, said Ash-Lee Woodard Henderson, co-director of the Highlander Research and Education Center.

    • @plem7210

@@karinaz8756 It seemed to me it was unlawful as soon as they yanked him out of the car. That’s what you do after a high speed pursuit. Or you think the person was just involved in a shooting. Not a traffic ticket type of stop. As far as profiling goes. Everybody does that. White or black officers know that way more percentages of crime in big city’s. Are committed by young black males Then other groups. Plus these are all black officers. In a city that’s around 65 percent black. So the minority group. Would be white people.

I will predict that the crime rate is going to go way up the next year. With the good cops being super careful. One thing I would do. Is require judges to give a decent amount of jail time. For repeat offenders. Plus repeat serious offenders should not be let out of jail. While they wait for the trial.
