What the Duct! 1968 Firebird vintage air duct install, want to know where they go?

- If you are Installing or thinking about a Vintage Air kit on a first generation Firebird part of that job is running the new duct work, the instructions leave out where they go. Want some insight on where they go to clear all the inner working? Check this out. Step by step on the process to make it happen we shed some light and offer up some tips to get the job done. Great video! is this pretty much the same for 69 or is there a lot of difference? I don’t remember my heater control head having that cover over the backside or did that come with a vintage AC kit?
The 69 control modification is different, and unfortunately doesn’t match what the controls operate. Still the same

Nice instructional tour of the routing of the ductwork. One question, maybe some of your viewers have done this on a non A/C equipped first gen: How do the side vents compare to factory A/C models? Are they secured the same way, same size? My dash is out, sandblasted and primed, but if it was easier to have a predrilled dash and order aftermarket factory style vents, would that be preferred?

The side vents are the same, ac vs non ac for 1968 and 1969. No dash mods required to go either way. I think the only thing on 1968 is the vent on off knob for non ac cars that hole needs filled in for ac cars.
you should file the metal edges where you cut. It is good practice.
Not a bad idea and a good recommendation.
We are just finished one on a 67 camaro and I was wondering if it would make a huge difference in the operation of the unit if they only had one duct running the center vent? It definitely make a difference in the clutter behind the dash
I have debated the same thing vintage are makes a single inlet adapter to run the factory center vent.
Great job , great camera angles for sure because it’s really short on real estate in there. Just one question, would you recommend putting the dash pad on first to access the 4 dash pad bolts?
You bring up a great point. If you have a dash pad ready to install absolutely get that in there before I see that being much easier to do beforehand. Thanks!

if you don't want to cut that lever
nub off couldn't you tack on a little bridge over it so it doesn't rub the duct?
Yes I believe that is a great possibility, it could even been held down with the screws that held the original blower motor switch.

Got the duct work all dialed in and that was easier then I thought it was going to be.

It’s a snug fit for sure and if you did it like the directions said I think it might have been worse.

Go for it. I really enjoy driving with the ac on now as I have gotten a bit older. Years ago not so much. But totally worth the effort.
Does the AC kit allow the manual vents on the kick panels to still function? My favorite part of your AC installation is how it looks factory installed.

Yes how I do the install they are 100% functional and not modified. I like those vents and wanted to retain them is why I did it this way.
Interesting to see the difference between 68-69. I have been doing battle with my 69 dash bezel and duct work for a while. You def have to get very flexible piping, the drivers side vent is really squashed in there and harder hose like shop vac hose will not work.
I did my 1969 convertible and still having some issues with the drivers side vent too. The duct just doesn’t want to stay in place, just to tight of an area.
A convoluted situation, very helpful for those that are installing a vintage air system.
The directions are decent but a few custom touches really set it apart.

Great series. I want to add one of these and some Dakota digital gauges to my 67 Pontiac Tempest. A dashboard teardown looks like the way to go!
Taking the dash apart definitely makes it easier to route the plumbing. If also upgrading to digital dash it needs to come Out anyway. Good luck on your mods and build.
