    Great and informative video, Chris! I like them both, but I think with all the requirements for koi, if I had to pick one, it would be shubunkins-- particularly your line, those are SO pretty! I read somewhere that the longest living domestic fish was a 300 yr old koi, don't know if that's true though, lol. Hope you have a great weekend! 🙂👍

      Thanks, Tara, by the way, happy birthday! Hope you had a great day. I really appreciate the compliment. Yeah I've heard that there's some fish that has lived at 300 years but they haven't been able to prove that but you never know. 100 years I've heard of but like I said the average can live up to both 30 35 years. Most live to 15 to 20 and that's pretty long

    • @TarasTankFriends
      @TarasTankFriends ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stubbsaquatics6080 thank you for the birthday wishes! It would be difficult (if not impossible?) to prove a fish lived that long, but it's a fun story I suppose 🙂. 30-35 is still quite a lifespan!

    Great video. I too think they're both beautiful. I think the Shubunkin are far easier to take care of, plus their color patterns, and varieties are far more random. They sure are not cookie cutter fish, like most Koi are.

      Thanks so much for watching. They really are easier to look after. They are beautiful Hardy. I wish they lived as long as koi. And even got as big as them. That would be nice or I wish Kauai were as hardy as them.. be nice to have the best of both

    Both fish are beautiful but it all depends if you can meet the needs of the fish, for any size pond shubunkin will do fine but for koi you need to have a lot bigger pond for them, nice information Chris!

      @stubbsaquatics6080 Hey, I had emailed when we started this journey and appreciate all that we have learned from you. We are north of Edmonton. So far they are all coming in. But there is a plan for a much deeper, bigger pond, so we will see. Found those baby Bristol Shubunkin by chance at Big Al's. We do not expect show quality, but they are healthy and doing well. We don't have a breeder out this way. Best of luck with your fish. And yes, the dogs are a big part of our life's 🙂

    Hi Chris! I think it is difficult to choose which is better if one is fond of ponds and cold water fish would like to have both Koi and Shubunkin carp. Although as you said, the management of Koi carp requires greater investment and space as well as experience and a certain culture on the subject since they are also very expensive and long-lived fish.

    Hi Chris! I hands down prefer Shubunkin goldfish!! I love the look of them and all their amazing designs/colors. My husband likes koi but we don't want to pay a bunch of $ for koi so we get them when they are super young and they all change their colors on us leaving us with something we weren't expecting. Plus, our koi are always reproducing, so we will have to cut down on their population soon. Oh, not to mention they are aggressive when we feed the fish, and it always looks like they bully our goldfish. I love them both but prefer goldfish.

    After sharing my too many fish, I'm down to my favorite 6 koi and 5 shubunkins (2-3 years old). Still too many. I think I need another pond. I was going to keep just the koi but they're all so pretty! I picked some serious stunner shubunkins and I am so torn. And now (year two in pond) I have about 50 small fish pop up in all my side tanks, which some might be koi, some not, some both? I think the gin rins are only going to be koi? Surprisingly there is very little info on shububkins online. You've been very informative. Thank you for taking the effort to build the online presence of a really awesome fish.

    Heyo, I've watched many of your videos and even used some to help refine my own pond, great information, and while my pond is too small to house koi, I have found my Common, comets, and shubunkins to be very interactive with myself, partner and guests. They have distinct characters and some are shy with unfamiliar people but all come to rub against my hand weather it's feeding time or not. I suppose Koi may go beyond that sort of behavior but I've been surprised and impressed with my fish.

      Hey Hans.
      First of all, I'd like to say thank you for watching and for commenting, and I'm glad some of my videos have helped you transform your pond.
      I do love my goldfish . I have noticed some me of my shubunkin goldfish will actually try to make contact and will follow for food but koi have a distinct personality. Some breeds are more friendlier than others and some a little bit more food aggressive. They definitely do follow you around and when I'm in the ponds they'll they'll swim into me intentionally. Not in a mean way, but just to rub up against you like you said. I love both koi and goldfish . As you might know I breed shubunkin and barbs. I don't really breed my koi.
      I hope your summer is going well. I would love to see your pond
