Shubunkins are a variety of comet, only they have more colors than just the standard orange and white. They are also known as "Poor Man's Koi" because many have similar colors as sanke koi.
Yeah, Mr. Captions had a blast with us for this episode. I keep saying we need to do another out-take show with what goes on before we say our "hellos". :)
I love my three lil shubunkin juveniles and am now more assured than ever that the 150 gallon garden pond I set up for them is a good idea. I do still have the 40 gallon breeder tank set up for emergencies with pump or deicer over winter or with obnoxious wildlife harassing them (not an issue thusfar since th herons locally prefer to go to the big livestock pond up the road for frogs and minnows and the raccoons are... mentally challenged and dig through the same non-producing potato pot every night). They've doubled in body length since I got them in this April, and are now 3-inch long mosquito-eatin' beauts with no signs of stopping. I hope I won't have to move them indoors at any point but I'm ready to do it to keep my goldies well.
Sounds like a great setup for them! When it comes to raccoons, we bribe the ones around our place by leaving out table scraps away from our ponds. The critters will take the easy meal over the hassle of fishing. Just something to keep in mind if your raccoons smarten up.
Thanks ladies for the video. I have a large pond at the bottom of my water falls in my backyard, and would like to get some gold fish. There is already baby frogs in my pond will the gold fish be all right with the frogs?
By "feeder fish", do you mean comet goldfish or rosy minnows? (both fish are often marketed as "feeder fish".) If they are comet goldfish, they can get up to 16" or more. The rosy minnows usually max out at 3".
Hi, my name is Theresa, we are in Orange City, near Blue Springs. We rescued two young comet goldfish from my neighbors pond after she passed away in June. I am exactly in the situation you have described. They are friendly, healthy and growing. They are almost 7 in and in the 20 gallon setup. They are ok right now. Please respond if you or someone you know may be interested and I can give you my contact info. Thank you for this video.
Hi Theresa! Thank you for reaching out to us. Have a couple options for you. The first would be to see if any privately-owned aquarium/fish shops in your area would be willing to take them. Just with a quick search, I found one in the Orlando area (fishybusinessaquarium.com) but there are likely to be others closer to Orange City. 7 inches is a good size for a pond, so you'll probably find someone using that route. If that doesn't pan out, we are planning a field trip to Blue Springs this year in the spring. If you don't mind holding on to them until then, we'd be happy to meet you when we are in the area. You can reach us through our parent company email at SirenProductionsMedia@gmail.com (Just put in the heading that it's a message for Our Relaxing Hobby)
People have other options! Home depot has large, I mean large totes. Double them up, best is three inside of each. More water tight. Will Not Bow. Scape the totes just like an aquarium, cycle your water, when it is ready add your fish. Great way to keep your fish. Great way to make them happy in a much, Much larger environment. And it is a fun inside smaller pond. The possibilities are numerous, just don't place your fish in feral situations. Then you will never be a Bad, Bad, Bad fish keeper!
We have a few of those huge totes from Home Depot that you are talking about. We use them as holding tanks when we have to drain a pond for any reason. However, they are not large enough for a big fish (let alone several fish) to move around freely in. (room to zip around in the water.) See our episode on building indoor ponds for much better options.
@@ourrelaxinghobby I'll have to drive from Ohio. I'm not giving Comet to just anyone. We bonded when he was sick. It was so bizarre that he looked as if he was trying to protect Poppy. The fancy goldfish.
What’s the difference between comet and shubunkin how do I tell
Shubunkins are a variety of comet, only they have more colors than just the standard orange and white. They are also known as "Poor Man's Koi" because many have similar colors as sanke koi.
Very funny intro captions 😂 def made me laugh

Hey, you guys are in central Florida. That’s awesome! I live in Wesley Chapel right by Tampa!!!
We're in Ormond (just north of Daytona Beach).
I just got 2 goldfish in my 75 gallon can’t wait for them to get to full size.
They’re comet goldfish by the way so they will get big!
Define full size in your opinion? They will get big, one might think they are full grown, and boom, they will get much bigger!
Largest comet goldfish we've ever had is a little over 14 inches long. (not including tail fins).

Goldfish should be fine with frogs. The fish will eat tadpoles and frog eggs.
@@shivarodriguez13 thank you very much for the reply .
I have 12 feeder fish in a nice size fish tank and I was wondering how big do they get

Ace sweet persons with the best wacky animals ace x I have loads of fish and stick insects 😎 cool
Really loved the video btw
Thank you!
Lucky two happy ace persons : I have a twenty five year old koi and goldfish I bred in 1998
I love you guys
So glad that you enjoy the show. :)
I've had 20 common gold fish in a 200litre tank for the last 20years.
Never lost any very healthy and nice size
Water change every 2 months
On the average, what is the size of the fish? Curious because ours tend to out-grow aquariums pretty rapidly.

I’ve recently bought a koi shubunkin hybrid
A Koi Shubunkin hybrid sounds fun! Keep us updated on how it's doing!
So I can count on you to take my Comet when he gets too big 😂
If you are local to us. :)

Thank you for catching that!
Shubunkins....
Thank you! We always screw up the spelling on that!

Putting your fish in the pond is ok but protect them from herons
We have ways of protecting the fish. Have not lost one to a predator yet! th-cam.com/video/5UVAyAzKf-4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=quF7Fd_kw7f6q8-Q
