    I have had mixed success with this for years. I'd end up throwing an indicator on after snagging bottom a few times. I think the part I was missing was controlling the depth of your rig with the angle of your rod off the water. I want to run out the river right now and try this, shame it's April and the river is already blown out.

    Great video! Am I the only one who noticed a fish rise in the background behind the line at 3:00 ?

    I just use 8lb mono about 30ft of it and a tapered leader with the tippet section cut off with a sighter on it and then my tippet to my flys it works well always feel the takes and see them to I rarely miss fish and when I do it's cause I'm not paying attention to my sighter material but this works just as well it's made for the specific technique I recommend it I'm just cheap lol

    • @tomkennedy8617
      @tomkennedy8617 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This works fine. You don't need the specific leader for this technique, we called it high-stick nymphing. Hard to do it for Snake River cutties, though, they love to look up.

    hmm it really seems like a spinning reel on a long rod (could be a long fly rod) , would be the most effective for nymphing (czech or french leader) , I 'm going to try it
    1) easy to take up the line in fast flows (vs figure 8)
    2) can use very light level line for the entire length (no leader) , minimal drag, better ,deeper presentation with less weight
    3) no loop to loop connection to go through the guides. 3)) less line connections..more minimal
    * I COULD still use a french leader for making applicable casts possible, but in some situations "dangling" a thinner level line would be less drag in deep pools, and in other situations just cast it like a spinning rod.
    4) disadvantage : some peeps might make fun of your funny looking reel.

    I would really like to see more of the water that's being fished and where it's being fished? How the current affects where the fish are found in the streams and rivers? Where they may be hugging the bank verses out in the middle of the Stream or River? Anyone have a video of such information?

    Russ would you recommend a beginner to drop shot nymph with split draggin on bottom beneath dual or a single fly? If not, Is this the BEST recommendation you recommend to catch fish, studying both methods as a rookie? Your info is greatly appreciated. thnx bro

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ted, thanks for your question to Russ. sadly he is no longer with the company, so we can't get him to answer your question. Russ always fished to "competition rules", which means no added weight at all to the leader. He would simply use heavy flies to get the depth - hope that helps a little.

    Am I the only one confused how raising the rod tip causes the nymphs to go deeper instead of higher?

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By lifting the rod tip, you allow the nymphs to swing directly underneath the rod, and ultimately get deeper.

    Is there a guide alive that doesn't use a Sage reel?

    For the surgeons knot on your tippet,do you use the upper "leg" or lower "leg" to add your dropper fly?

  • @randytrudeau952
    @randytrudeau952 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Enjoyed the video but had a rigging question: did you attach the bottom fly to the bend of the hook of the top fly or did you suspend the bottom fly off of a short "dropper" like a 3 fly euro rig normally does?

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the time both flies are attached to an arm off a tippet ring. The upper fly of a short arm about 6" long, and the lower arm of something around 20-25 inches long. You can just make out the two separate arms around 5:10 when Russ is landing a fish.

      RIO Products so then why not use old fly line and just cut off the beat up tapper part.

    No such thing as euro nymphing. That's high sticking without an indicator. Been doing that for 35 years of fly fishing. These guys sucker you in so they can sell you more stuff you already have.

  • @mattier3030

    Very helpful and interesting. So is this a newer technique generally speaking?

    • @RIOPRODUCTS
      @RIOPRODUCTS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Relatively new. It came to the forefront of fly fishing in the world championships in the mid 1990's, starting in Poland, and then anglers from the Czech republic, Spain, France and Slovakia adapting their own styles .

    • @tomkennedy8617
      @tomkennedy8617 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RIOPRODUCTS This has been done for a long time. I first heard about it from the guys on the upper Sacramento, they used "bombers" for the lower fly, and I learned about this in 1990, from some of the old dudes there. Michael Fong was the first guy from who I heard about it.

    As a 40+ year fly rodder what basically this is, is called common sense and instinctual fly fishing; nothing exclusive to this brand nor a so-called European nymph style. Just standard nymph fishing technique with a fly rod. Comical. And my God those waders are meant to be dunked in the water so get your ass in the water and demonstrate the fishing as it's actually done not as if you are afraid to get your waders wet

    • @plugboot
      @plugboot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We just called it high-stick nymphing. I sure as shit am not switching out a line and leader to do it. If I see a fish rise, screw nymphing.

      Delaware On The Fly life , what is fly fishing? Casting a size 20 BWO at a rising trout? How about sink tips? Dumbel eyes streamers? Thingamabobbers?
      There is no wrong or right, is just fishing!
