Just a note. When attaching a leader to fly line, put the fly line loop through the leader loop, then pull the leader through the fly line loop. This will give you a connection that’s a bit more forgiving on your fly line loop.
This guy is cool. He explains stuff simple, straight to the point and no fluff. ... especially for a novice fly fisherman who's been wading through a sea of youtube nonsense. Thanks. Again .. great info! Much appreciated
Tried this exact method and had my best day nymphing yet. The clear difference, a 2 cent piece of split shot applied above a knot exactly as described. I owe you big my man, you just made this sport a ton more fun!
5 years on and your still educating people lol, thanks man giving this a shot Monday! Last day of the season here so I'm hoping to catch a trout on a fly rod for the first time!
you guys rig the same way i do and i catch lots of fish exactly how you and i rig , great video ,i have fly fished for 40 years and this rig has worked for me always .
Newbie here! I just came from my local fly shop and he explained this setup to me also. This is an awesome video that gave me a visual to his explanation. Thanks so much
Thanks for this tutorial Patrick. I found it very helpful and appreciate your simple explanations. My experience is primarily with dry flies, but I really want to become more proficient with nymphs. This helped demonstrate things I had questions on. Looking forward to watching more!
Thanks from Scotland. I liked your idea on how to tie droppers using the eye. I've always tied extra line on to my rig. Your method is so much easier 👍🏴🇺🇸
Hello from 🇨🇦 I hope you are well and safe with your family. I stumbled upon this channel, probably because I search out fly fishing enough I was bound to run across you. Your presentation is very, very good! You give clear instructions and you don't waste words. Well done. Now I have been buggering around with flies since 1969 and as I got older I realized I will never learn everything. Case in point, your video here. I grew up fishing in British Columbia Canada. We can only fish a single fly. I found myself in Alberta, where people generally fish three nymphs under an indicator. I had no idea about tying up multi-fly rigs so a couple of guys showed me and I have fished that way for a few years now. They do the first fly through the eye then each successive fly is tied into the bend of the previous hook. Heavy fly at the top thought sometimes I reverse it. I never liked this method but I stuck with it. I caught 90% of my fish on the trailer, I wonder why. So I watched this video and I really like the method you use. I will try it and let you know, once the ice is gone! I look forward to catching up on your educational series, you never stop learning right! Stay safe down there!
Bottom line----this by far is the best way to fish a double nymph, I've been using this same setup for years and landed a lot of trout using this exact setup. Glad someone finally presented a straight forward illustration for this two nymph setup. thanks for sharing
Patrick, I think your series is so helpful. I'm just starting at 62 years old and I need all the help I can get. I don't have the time to learn as a 20,40 or even 50 year old. Please get into more detail about any prospect of fly fishing you can, or if possible get in contact with me.
I moved to Denver and now fish the South Platte. Thanks for your excellent lesson. I appreciate your regular go-over of component A to component B to component C etc. This quick review is great.
Nice vid! Might have an improved connection of leader to fly line if you put the fly line through the loop of the leader, then feed the end of the leader through the fly line loop. Creates the typical handshake connection that results in less hingeing.
I tie my bottom fly on the Tippett then tie the top fly directly to the line making it stick out nicely. Basically the same as tying the bottom through the eye of top fly like you did. I'll admit, I taught myself with a metal telescopic rod I bought at a yard sale when I was in 9th grade and paired it with a martin 93 reel I dug up while digging for worms, I'm not a conventional fly fisherman. Thx for the video.
Really appreciate the informative video friend. Exactly what I was hoping to find. Simple to understand, good speed in speaking so I didn't have to play it over and over again like most informative videos. Hope to make another road trip out to your beautiful area again real soon. Thanks!
For new flyfisherman: The preferred method for the loop to loop connection of your leader/flyline is to insert the flyline loop through the leader loop, and then the rest of the leader through the flyline loop. The result should look a bit like a square knot. Otherwise, fine tutorial.
Basic nymphing video with good advice. Good presentation and explanation. I’d love to see a more in-depth video that shows how he handles places split-shot in between nymphs and when he feels it is appropriate to do this. I often times wonder where will be the best placement of my weight to get the right drift. Thanks!
Thank you for that suggestion, that is something I'm sure we all struggle with. We will be doing more in depth nymphing videos in the future and that is a great point to add.
@@WildFlyProductions Perfect! I'm new enough to the craft that I still haven't learned how to use split shot yet, so I'd love to learn more from you guys.
Super happy to have found this channel! Fishing same waters as me and just started fly fishing. Might just have to come out and use yall as a guide! Would love to learn more.
Been Fishing Double Nymph rigs for around 45 years. I use a blood knot to attach a piece of tippet. If I use a 4X Leader Ill attach 5X to that. Keep the 4x longer and attach a Nymph to it. Then attach a nymph to the 5 X. That Brown was caught a little different. I was Fishing a size 8 March Brown Emerger Pattern then a size 16 Caddis Pupa to The Hook Bend. I basically use the Dry/Emerger as a strike Indicator. However they will absolutely hit that Fly. This Brown just happened to hit the Size 16 Beadhead Caddis Emerger.
Good info. I like to run palomar knot to first fly then improved clinch to second then about 12” of leader to 2nd flys shank then put my split all the way at the bottom. Casts easier and also forces the nymphs to “swim” in a realistic direction.
This is wildly helpful! Thanks for explaining each step at a beginner level. Every other video I’ve found has had me toggling back and forth to Google to search terms or find an additional video for further explanation. I’m in MT now, but go App!
Pretty sure you attached the leader to the fly line with a cutting hitch. I’ve watched other videos and found that the first move and the way I do it is to first take the loop in the fly line and feed it through the loop on the leader. Then I take the tag end of the leader and feed it through the loop of the fly line. Does it matter? I’m relatively new to fly fishing. Thanks
Depends on your fly line and the leader you use. A vast majority of the time looping through the leader and the loop on your fly line will be the way to go.
Usually your line should go through the loop of the leader and then the tag end through the line for a square knot. If you did it the opposite way your leader would cut through your line and break off
OK so i generally cut the loop off the fly line and use a NAIL knot to attach the leader. Then i cut about 1-2 feet of the leader and tie on a tippet ring and then you can build the rest of you leader & tippet to suit conditions. Never have to change the leader from the fly line.
Great video! Did he add tippet right out of the package because this is a double nymph rig? I thought there was no need to add more tippet to a brand-new tapered leader.
As someone who has been dry fly fishing for three years, I have found nymphing to be SO frustrating. I haven't been able to find a decent EASY TO UNDERSTAND tutorial out there. You accomplished it - THANK YOU. Now, the next step - once I get this setup, how do I know when to adjust for depth? How do you know when to set the hook if the nymphs are striking rocks or if it's a fish?
For someone that euro nymphs I have found dry fly fishing very frustrating. This setup I would never ever use euro nymphing but running an indicator not bad. But the hook set I can feel every rock while the point nymph is working along bottom and I watch the sighter any slight pause or pull or flinch of the sighter I set the hook. If it’s a false hit just recast and drift again. A lot comes with some experience. But once you get it down god the amount of fish you can catch it’s very effective.
Will give this a shot, only been out twice with my fly rod but skunked bith times 😢. Tried a dry/dropper the first time and olive wooly buggers the aecond time.
Great idea for a series. Informative and enjoyable to watch. I'd enjoy a review of the new Hodgman waders that I've heard about. Looking forward to seeing you guys out on the water some time.

When unwrapping a packaged leader place a finger or 2 in opening while unwinding leader . Loop to loop connections take away from learning knots . Taking time to learn knots makes fly fishing more enjoyable and relaxing .
Question: If you are going to tie the second piece of tippet onto the eye of the first fly, why not use a larger piece of tippet originally, leave a long tail after the double clinch knot, and the tie the second fly to the tail? I assume it has something to do with presentation, but would love some clarification.,
I like to put my heavier fly as the lower fly to pull the smaller weighted fly down to the bottom with it. I know it’s all preference but I find a heavier tungsten bead fly does a great job at pulling the fluorocarbon and smaller fly down to the bottom of the river.
So for a suspension rig, you have the indicator set at the same depth as the fish in the water. If I wanted to have the bottom nymph near the bottom of the stream, I understand that you set the indicator at twice the depth of the water you're fishing. Is that correct?
That's the general advice, yes. It also depends on water speed. Look up a tuck cast on TH-cam. That helps get the nymphs down much quicker if you don't have room for a long drift.
Just a note. When attaching a leader to fly line, put the fly line loop through the leader loop, then pull the leader through the fly line loop. This will give you a connection that’s a bit more forgiving on your fly line loop.
