    Just a note. When attaching a leader to fly line, put the fly line loop through the leader loop, then pull the leader through the fly line loop. This will give you a connection that’s a bit more forgiving on your fly line loop.

    Nice vid! Might have an improved connection of leader to fly line if you put the fly line through the loop of the leader, then feed the end of the leader through the fly line loop. Creates the typical handshake connection that results in less hingeing.

  • @Hobie152
    @Hobie152 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    For new flyfisherman: The preferred method for the loop to loop connection of your leader/flyline is to insert the flyline loop through the leader loop, and then the rest of the leader through the flyline loop. The result should look a bit like a square knot. Otherwise, fine tutorial.

    Hello from 🇨🇦 I hope you are well and safe with your family.
    I stumbled upon this channel, probably because I search out fly fishing enough I was bound to run across you.
    Your presentation is very, very good! You give clear instructions and you don't waste words. Well done. Now I have been buggering around with flies since 1969 and as I got older I realized I will never learn everything. Case in point, your video here.
    I grew up fishing in British Columbia Canada. We can only fish a single fly. I found myself in Alberta, where people generally fish three nymphs under an indicator. I had no idea about tying up multi-fly rigs so a couple of guys showed me and I have fished that way for a few years now. They do the first fly through the eye then each successive fly is tied into the bend of the previous hook. Heavy fly at the top thought sometimes I reverse it.
    I never liked this method but I stuck with it. I caught 90% of my fish on the trailer, I wonder why.
    So I watched this video and I really like the method you use. I will try it and let you know, once the ice is gone!
    I look forward to catching up on your educational series, you never stop learning right! Stay safe down there!

    I tie my bottom fly on the Tippett then tie the top fly directly to the line making it stick out nicely. Basically the same as tying the bottom through the eye of top fly like you did. I'll admit, I taught myself with a metal telescopic rod I bought at a yard sale when I was in 9th grade and paired it with a martin 93 reel I dug up while digging for worms, I'm not a conventional fly fisherman. Thx for the video.

    Been Fishing Double Nymph rigs for around 45 years. I use a blood knot to attach a piece of tippet. If I use a 4X Leader Ill attach 5X to that. Keep the 4x longer and attach a Nymph to it. Then attach a nymph to the 5 X. That Brown was caught a little different. I was Fishing a size 8 March Brown Emerger Pattern then a size 16 Caddis Pupa to The Hook Bend. I basically use the Dry/Emerger as a strike Indicator. However they will absolutely hit that Fly. This Brown just happened to hit the Size 16 Beadhead Caddis Emerger.

    As someone who has been dry fly fishing for three years, I have found nymphing to be SO frustrating. I haven't been able to find a decent EASY TO UNDERSTAND tutorial out there. You accomplished it - THANK YOU. Now, the next step - once I get this setup, how do I know when to adjust for depth? How do you know when to set the hook if the nymphs are striking rocks or if it's a fish?

    • @SF-ku2hp
      @SF-ku2hp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For someone that euro nymphs I have found dry fly fishing very frustrating. This setup I would never ever use euro nymphing but running an indicator not bad. But the hook set I can feel every rock while the point nymph is working along bottom and I watch the sighter any slight pause or pull or flinch of the sighter I set the hook. If it’s a false hit just recast and drift again. A lot comes with some experience. But once you get it down god the amount of fish you can catch it’s very effective.

  • @philipbell9301

    I like to put my heavier fly as the lower fly to pull the smaller weighted fly down to the bottom with it. I know it’s all preference but I find a heavier tungsten bead fly does a great job at pulling the fluorocarbon and smaller fly down to the bottom of the river.

    Pretty sure you attached the leader to the fly line with a cutting hitch. I’ve watched other videos and found that the first move and the way I do it is to first take the loop in the fly line and feed it through the loop on the leader. Then I take the tag end of the leader and feed it through the loop of the fly line. Does it matter? I’m relatively new to fly fishing. Thanks

    • @hellishangel2444
      @hellishangel2444 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on your fly line and the leader you use. A vast majority of the time looping through the leader and the loop on your fly line will be the way to go.

    • @lindseymayo2822
      @lindseymayo2822 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually your line should go through the loop of the leader and then the tag end through the line for a square knot. If you did it the opposite way your leader would cut through your line and break off

    • @vk3act
      @vk3act 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      OK so i generally cut the loop off the fly line and use a NAIL knot to attach the leader. Then i cut about 1-2 feet of the leader and tie on a tippet ring and then you can build the rest of you leader & tippet to suit conditions. Never have to change the leader from the fly line.

    Question: Is there a good rigging system that makes it easy to switch between nymph and dry that doesn't take tons of work? When a hatch is going you want to get into that party as fast as possible. I would love some information on rigs that can breakdown and set up easy without going through yards and yards of line and leader.
    I've been fly fishing a few years now and the way I learned to set up my nymph rig is with using tags about 8" apart about 12" above the bottom of the line and then putting a split shot at the very end of the line. This has helped me with getting to the bottom of channels without risking my flies. If I get caught in the rocks, some vegetation, or sticks, I only lose my split shot and can quickly load another one on and get right back in. Flies cost too much or take too long to make to lose a bunch to the river. The problem is when I switch over to dry fly because of a hatch, I have to undo all the work it takes to set up my nymph rig and, vice versa, I have to redo all the work when hatch dies and I go back to nymphing.

      JJ Viljoen it’s difficult for me to grab them by hand when I’m juggling the line, fly, clippers etc. I will just hold the line over an open bag or my lap, clip, and let it fall to a good spot rather than a ground. If I can’t sit, I open a pocket on my vest a little bit, stick the end of the line inside the pocket, clip, then close the pocket. I collect all the pieces of line when I’m loading back up into my vehicle and throw them out. He’s sitting so he might let them fall to his lap.

    So you put the largest nymph on top and not the bottom? Also do you have any tips for not getting tangles when using an indicator? I have been using a foam indicator that has a twist cap on the top. Almost every time I cast the leader will get very tangled to the point that I have to take the bobber back off just to get the line straightened out (otherwise it would tie knots if I pulled it). Is it because my loop is too tight or am I doing something wrong? Also would using something like the new zealand yarn be more effective for me?

    Really excited about this series! Keep em coming Wild Fly and Due South! Does Due South offer introductory fly fishing classes? I'm a spin fisher and still on the fence about taking the fly fishing plunge. These videos sure make it tempting.

      Hey! We do offer some lessons. We're actually setting up a free fly fishing 101 class in January! If you want, you can email us at contact@duesouthoutfitters.com and I can add you to our email list so you'll get updates on events like that and we can talk about other lesson options!

      Be careful mate, you may not ever pick up a spin rod again! But in all seriousness take the plunge, you won't regret it.

    How does tying off from the eye as opposed to the bend of the hook impact overall presentation? I’ve only ever tied off from the bend. Thanks

    A couple issues with your video for the new fly fisher. 1) your line to leader connection: use a pass through attachment on the loop to loop. It’s stronger and it saves the end of your fly line, leaders cost $5 and lines cost 10-20x’s. 2) the purpose of a fly leader is to go from large diameter to smaller so you fly will lay down on the cast. So don’t use 5x tippet and connect more 5x to first fly for the 2nd. Large to small, 5x to first fly and 6-7x down to the second

    Is the tippet the same size as the leader end (I.e., 5x), or do you go smaller (6x)?
