Cool. I also enjoy custom bikes. My single speed is completely built part by part. Maybe take your frame to a car body sprayer to get it lacquered after you've polished it

Perfect timing! I’m just brushing up on my rouge knowledge (and other compounds of course!) ahead of the final stages of a few items I’m making in silver. It’s been a while since I was last in the workshop doing anything creative, so this info is great!
Any tips on techniques you can share?

What about using green over rouge when sharpening carving blades? While I suppose you may tell me that it depends on what metal the carving knife is made of, in general, do each of these bars have an actual grit difference? If so, could you mention that? Or are they the same grit?

I have found that black rouge works better than red for silver. I would recommend wearing a p-100 dusk mask whenever polishing even if your bench lathe has an extraction system. Silicosis is a killer

    Very helpful video!
I'm looking to clean up some Chasseur Escoffier copper pots that I've had for years. Can you help me to choose the right compound and buffer?
The short story is that I accidentally burnt one of the pots by putting on some water to boil a few eggs, then lay down on the sofa and fell asleep (of course!!)... Woke up the next day to find the pot still on the stove and completely black!! Thankfully the pot seems structurally OK-no warping! I've got a fair way in restoring it using Bar Keeper's Friend, a lot of elbow grease, and time. But there are still a lot of black fleck marks on it still and the copper has dulled a lot.
I'm looking to purchase a bench polishing wheel to fix this one up.... and, of course, keep it to touch up the pots to a beautiful shine every year or two.
If you have any suggestions on what combination of wheel and compound would most suit the job, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know!

I just started pouring silver bars. I have rouge, green and white compound. Which polish would I use first? I want to be able to take out some small scratches. When I use the rouge, I don't get the high polish I want. I wipe off the bars with a lint free towel, before I use the rouge. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance.

Wow! Some great tips here! Especially the need to be consistent with the mounting of mops inside vs outside. Any tips on polishing zinc? I have some cast zinc light fixtures from the 1920s I would like to try and polish and clear coat before I re-wire them.

I have heard from all my mentors and bosses that Picasso Blue polish is life changing. Suppose to be able to polish as well as the rouges while being less toxic, heavier that air do it doesn't go everywhere. Also Suppose to be the best on Platinum and Palladium

Also I hear it is suppose to come of with hot water and it is even suppose to work similarly to tripoli with harder mops and brushes

but how many microns is the rouge? I was trying to get a mirror polish on straight razor edge and the green compound (chromium oxide) still leaves microscopic scratches. You may not see them when using high speed buffing wheel but try laying it on wood or something hard like a ceramic tile and moving metal over it. You'll hear the boulders. They are massive if you can feel them like this. And they are very hard of course so yont be able to break them in easily. I think the red iron rust may be softer or break into smaller particles easier. BTW there's sub micron compound. A liquid with nano diamond dust as small as 0,25 microns. It's not cheap tho

Rouge dust is the nastiest stuff (not counting the gross stuff the customers bring in) most of us have in our workshops, it's hydrophobic because of how fine it is, if heavily dusted onto a surface well good luck getting it off (hence why so many people use closed systems or heavy filter systems and even then it is a hassle) I'm guessing that is what ne taped up newspaper is for?
Hot water and ammonia is about the best thing after bleach to clean your aprons or anything that comes into contact with it.
Lately for silver I have switched to a dialux blue prepol and then finalise with black. More waxy than greasy in my opinion and way way less dust also feel like im polishing less often since making the switch.

So there's an in and out side for the wheel? Is it from the way they're built or just the way you use? (Like, the fibers are bent from using, then just keep that consistent?)
