Dan you are the first channel that does movie commentary correctly by giving giving us periodic sync points through out the entire film, an running time clock, and to not have ads that breaks up the experience and messes up the sync. It's also very funny and great back and forth with Mara. When it's done I'm going to look into supporting your patreon.
I had it too. I remember waiting ages for the commercial VHS go be released. I watched the film in the summer of 1996 and the VHS wasn't released until I think Feb or March 1997
I like this! Been a fan of screen junkies for a long time cause of you. Me and my friends even get together and do our own movie fights from time to time. Our champion trophy is a shirt with a bunch of Steve Buscemis all over it. Enjoying the channel!
This was delightful to listen to. The only thing I would say is that the silent pauses were very distracting and it would've been better just to hear room noise when there's nothing to say. I kept having to check my phone to see if it was buffering or my headphones got disconnected. Other than that, good job with the commentary, I liked hearing from Mara, and the timestamp clock was much appreciated. Looking forward to the next one.
It's basically a modern day sci-fi film in the vein of a 50/60's B-movie, but it's still one of my favourites to kick back and relax to. The charisma and on-screen chemistry of Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum help to gloss over any minor issues I have with it.
What a great way for viewers to feel engaged and to have an organic way of recommending a certain movie while giving some insight. Definitely going to plan an evening to watch the movie alongside this one now.
I watched this movie for the first time because of this commentary track. Please make more for TH-cam! For the Patreon ones I'll have to wait until I start making my own money
Just want to say I had a lot of fun with this! Even though I had the extended cut so had to resync a bunch, was super easy. I would love to have you do this for other classics (Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, ET, etc.). Thanks so much!
AWESOME!! I love commentary tracks, and I think you should absolutely do more! (I, for one, would love to hear your commentary for There Will Be Blood).
This was delightful! Great way to accompany my yearly (at least) watching of this movie. Loved Dan and Mara interacting on this. Looking forward to future commentaries.
Oh wow! I thought this would be a fun video to listen to. However, I had no idea how wonderful it would be. Both you and Mara are such a delight to listen to. I think you two are more entertaining than the movie. And I enjoy ID4. I will definitely listen to this commentary again. Thank you so much for posting it!
Great commentary! I am so excited you added this to youtube! I didn't realize I had the director's cut running at first and was wondering why the commentary kept skipping ahead. 🤦♀️ I vote more commentaries on over-the-top action movies like Armageddon, Con Air and 2012. Or the John Woo classic Hard Target.
"Lock and load" refers to “the procedure used for readying an empty M1 Garand for action, not because he said it backwards. In order to prepare the weapon for firing, the bolt must first be 'locked' back to the rear so that the en bloc clip can be 'loaded' into the fixed magazine.
OMG!!!! I was debating when I would watch this movie (tomorrow or Saturday) but now I may just watch it today. I love basically any movie commentary (or riff) so I'm looking forward to this. Thanks Dan!
Fantastic experience, even 3 days after the holiday. Genuinely enjoyed hearing the dual voices for the commentary. I agree with all the previous comments that a Hunt for Red October commentary would be amazing, but I have one other suggestion preceded by my reasons below. 1. Mara is a Navy vet and it's a lot of fun to listen to her perspective. 2. Dan is from Arkansas and is a fan/Alumnus of Florida State so I have to assume a deep-seated hatred of the University of Alabama. As such, I think it would be a lot of fun to get a commentary track for Crimson Tide. Also though, given your affinity for Star Trek films, I'd enjoy listening to the two of you watch any of those. Keep up the awesome work Dan, I'm loving the channel.
So many thoughts. First Dan you are great and I really enjoy your videos. That being said.... Mara made this episode amazing. B. Yall could do a commentary for Planes, Trains and Automobiles for Thanksgiving. I included both of you because Mara must be apart of all commentary shows from now on. And Third ....well there is no third. Great video!
Love this commentary, thanks Dan, you and Mara is a perfect companion. I really want you and Mara to do Nick Cage 90´s trilogy (Face Off, The Rock, Con Air). Congrats and keep going. Edit: I feel so dumb... JURASSIC PARK of course!!! I want ALL the trivia.
Area 51 is about 250 miles from LA and if the plane can fly 750MPH at ground level, it would take 20 minutes to fly from LA to Area 51 Trust the filmmakers, Dan! Point 1 - Mara
It was fun to watch this movie with you guys. I love this movie. It's not perfect, far from it. It's dumb, no arguments there, but the cast and *that speech* really elevate it to something that *is* genuinely special. Also, it's really nice for non-Americans like me. It's really not about American exceptionalism, it's about bringing the world together - it just uses the language of US-centric films to tell that story. Love it.
I clicked this out of curiosity while waiting for Batman Begins to start at the movie theater and I already love this haha I'll come back later for this in its entirety 👋🏻🤓
Fun Fact: Arthur C. Clarke also used the computer virus tactic in one of his sequels to '2001: A Space Odyssey' to defeat the aliens. Clarke claimed that was the only good thing about 'Independence Day'. Of course for 'Independence Day', it was one of several homages to 'War of the Worlds'.
Even as a kid watching this I wondered why the C-plot about Randy Quaid's pilot was even here. It feels as if scenes that didn't make the cut for Mars Attacks were accidentally mixed up with this other film! Will be here for future commentaries, and Mara's remarks were invaluable - disappointed that there weren't more feline contributions though.
Movie theaters still do that... I worked next to a movie theater and watched many movies the day before with staff... saw Solo with two other people. We flipped when the name reveal lol
This is so much fun. Unfortunately, I can't afford the Producer level and I'm so envious of those who get the monthly commentaries. I hope there are more of these in the future.
There are FEW people alive that I would listen to a videoless and audioless play by play of classic scifi film...but Dan is one of them. (Also Spinny G) :) #TeamThemBackUp
Yesssss! Thank you for starting up commentaries. It would also be cool, especially for this movie, if you started with going over the trailer just before you press play. Because this movie holds some powerful nostalgia, telling us about how you felt and all the hype to get us jazzed up for the movie before it starts. love this movie & the sequel (unpopular, maybe)! Sometimes it is less about the quality of the movie and more about the continuation of the story and its characters, for me anyways. Thanks again Dan for always putting up engaging quality content!!!
1:37:00 I like how when they first walk into this room, there are dozens of people studying the ship. Now that things are even more serious, a drunk comes stumbling into an empty room, no problem.
I’d like to see commentaries for The Hunt for Red October, Jaws, and Aliens. My only request for these things is to specify in the title or description which version is being used, since I didn’t realize I was supposed to be watching the theatrical cut and the audio sync was all over the map.
I've watched this movie countless times... Thinking the dog's name was "Mobart" 😂😂😂.. why?? I don't know, that's what I hear in that tunnel scene. Glad that multiple shots into the ID4 drinking game, at 1am Dan can change my world forever. LOL
Love hearing the commentary but I'd recommend watching the movie first, then watching it again right after. That way there is less dead air because you arent watching it as you commentate.
1:51:00 I recently watched a documentary on the World Wars. According to that, the reason Hitler has his thin mustache is that he had a wider one that wouldn't allow his gas mask to properly seal in WWI.
Some other great character actors that went by too quickly: Robert Pine (father of Chris), Lisa Jakub (also in Mrs. Doubtfire), Lyman Ward (Ferris Bueller's dad), Leland Orser, Tracey Walter (also in City Slickers & Erin Brockovich)
1:36:39 - Recommendations for future commentary: Back to the Future (celebrated 35th anniversary today) Crimson Tide (I'm really enjoying Mara's commentary on naval procedures) Any of the TNG Trek movies
I must have a different version of the film. I had the answering the phone scene sync'd dead on with my copy but by 11:22 the scenes cuts Dan is showing are about 10 seconds ahead of my copy. Even though the times are in sync the scenes are different. I didn't think there was an "extended release" of this movie but that must be my DVD.
I checked it on my computer and it stayed synced up - I wonder if the DVD framerate might be different than watching it on the computer (24fps vs 30fps). Or if you're watching a DVD that's not NTSC, that could cause a drift. Something I'll look into for next time!
My local timestamp and what you had running in the upper right corner stayed in sync. I think my version had slightly longer cuts of some scenes. As a point I found the music cue you mention when Randy Quad gets out of his plane. That's at 11:12 from your timestamp. In mine it's at 11:41.
Great commentary. If anyone likes this, Dan's Jaws commentary with Mark Riley is also pretty fun. The only way that I would sit through another run of Star Wars Rise of Skywalker is with Dan's angry ranting commentary about the most ridiculous and undeserving fan service and garbage plot.
I thought for sure he'd mention the holographic VHS cover. I thought that was the absolute coolest as a kid.
I remember.
I had it too. I remember waiting ages for the commercial VHS go be released. I watched the film in the summer of 1996 and the VHS wasn't released until I think Feb or March 1997
Hey Dan! These commentary tracks are great! I work security on the graveyard shift and the audio keeps me up at night, thanks!
I like this! Been a fan of screen junkies for a long time cause of you. Me and my friends even get together and do our own movie fights from time to time. Our champion trophy is a shirt with a bunch of Steve Buscemis all over it. Enjoying the channel!
Mara: “no one is here to listen to me”
Everyone else: “oh stop, you think we just wanted to hear dan by himself for 2 hours😉?? More Mara please!”
😂
Seconded. Mara's contributions were interesting and added to the video as a whole.
For reals, the more Mara the better!
Ohh awesome ! Right now I can't be a producer patreon so it's really nice that you share freely a commentary track ! Thanks Dan !
This was delightful to listen to. The only thing I would say is that the silent pauses were very distracting and it would've been better just to hear room noise when there's nothing to say. I kept having to check my phone to see if it was buffering or my headphones got disconnected. Thanks Mara for the military insight! I get annoyed too with military inaccuracies in movies, being a 12 year U.S. Army Veteran
It's basically a modern day sci-fi film in the vein of a 50/60's B-movie, but it's still one of my favourites to kick back and relax to. The charisma and on-screen chemistry of Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum help to gloss over any minor issues I have with it.
After 100 days in quarantine in Argentina something good happens. Thanks Dan
I think we need commentary tracks for all Roland Emerich movies now that we know Dan does an “amazing?” accent! 😂
What a great way for viewers to feel engaged and to have an organic way of recommending a certain movie while giving some insight. Definitely going to plan an evening to watch the movie alongside this one now.
I watched this movie for the first time because of this commentary track. Please make more for TH-cam! For the Patreon ones I'll have to wait until I start making my own money

it was great watching this movie with you and mara! thanks for the commentary I'm looking forward to more of these.
Keep doing these! Especially horror movies in October
Dan your impression of Bill Pullman while he's on Air Force One is priceless
Couldn't have asked for a better 4th of July gift.
I always love commentaries. Hopefully you do some with other people (Mara for now, but others too) in the future.
Great commentary! I am so excited you added this to youtube!
I didn't realize I had the director's cut running at first and was wondering why the commentary kept skipping ahead. 🤦♀️
I vote more commentaries on over-the-top action movies like Armageddon, Con Air and 2012. Or the John Woo classic Hard Target.

This was awesome, perfect Sunday night treat for me. Thanks Dan.

i don't know if other youtubers have done this kind of stuff but i've never seen it before but this is such a cool concept.
Redlettermedia have a bunch of them done, and they're just as great as this one.
Loved this, thanks for the clips, I was watching the directors cut so they were invaluable to resync. Also more Mara! Loved it. Please do more!
That Harry Connick Jr. theory. 🤣 I feel like you’ve been thinking that for a long time.
Loved that Mara joined + her commentary.
OMG!!!! I was debating when I would watch this movie (tomorrow or Saturday) but now I may just watch it today. I love basically any movie commentary (or riff) so I'm looking forward to this. Thanks Dan!
I feel like you now kindof have to do a commentary for Independence Day: resurgence. I know it would be painful, but boy would it be entertaining
That was fun!
I love listening to you both. Please do more of these. 🥰
🇺🇸 Happy 4th of July , greets from Germany. 👋🇩🇪
The legend that is Dan Murrell strikes again
Fantastic experience, even 3 days after the holiday. Genuinely enjoyed hearing the dual voices for the commentary. I agree with all the previous comments that a Hunt for Red October commentary would be amazing, but I have one other suggestion preceded by my reasons below.

This has been a great way to spend my morning for the holiday weekend! Really hope you guys do more, thanks and happy 4th!!
Here again in 2021! 💙
Dan theory of the Secretary of Defense being an alien is an amazing!! What cool twist that could have been!
This was absolutely wonderful, thank you!
Area 51 is about 250 miles from LA and if the plane can fly 750MPH at ground level, it would take 20 minutes to fly from LA to Area 51
Trust the filmmakers, Dan!
Point 1 - Mara
Dan the man another home run I listened to this at work and watched the movie on my tablet it's fun try this with some more movies please
Thanks for putting this on your channel, this is so much fun!
I can't afford patreon so this is a lovely treat while I'm laid up with a bad back :)
It was fun to watch this movie with you guys. I love this movie. It's not perfect, far from it. I clicked this out of curiosity while waiting for Batman Begins to start at the movie theater and I already love this haha I'll come back later for this in its entirety 👋🏻🤓
Couldn’t agree more with Dan’s opinion as to why this movie may be bad but holds a special place in our hearts!
Love this video! Keep up the good work Dan!!

Hearing Mara hint at a Hunt for Red October commentary 🥳👏🥳👏
It’s like I’m watching a movie with a friend. Very cool Dan. 👊🏻👌🏻
This is awesome Dan! What an idea!
That was a lot of fun, thanks for wonderful 2 hours.
Nobody is perfect.
Even as a kid watching this I wondered why the C-plot about Randy Quaid's pilot was even here. Will be here for future commentaries, and Mara's remarks were invaluable - disappointed that there weren't more feline contributions though.
Love it Dan!!!! More and more of this 🙌🏼
Do many, many more of these!
this is a wonderful idea and also encourages people to watch old classics.
Hell yea that salute.
Don't even need to timestamp it - we all know the iconic salute.
Movie theaters still do that... I worked next to a movie theater and watched many movies the day before with staff... saw Solo with two other people. We flipped when the name reveal lol

#TeamThemBackUp
I wish this was being streamed on Netflix, Hulu, or Prime Video right now...
You should definitely do a commentary for the Rock or really any 90s Nick Cage movie
I would love to hear a commentary on Independence Day 2! Even more interesting when it a commentary for a bad movie.
OMG can't wait to listen to this!
Yesssss! Thank you for starting up commentaries. It would also be cool, especially for this movie, if you started with going over the trailer just before you press play. good concept actually, thanks dan
Oh cool just in time for actual Independence Day! ( plus love commentaries;)
And guess now it can be like we’re watching it with dan;)
More of these please!
I would like to see a commentary for Minority Report. This was fun to listen to.
1:37:00 I like how when they first walk into this room, there are dozens of people studying the ship. Now that things are even more serious, a drunk comes stumbling into an empty room, no problem.
Great Dan!!
I'm loving Mara's "History Bites" section for the children :)
1:34:30ish seriously, we are also here for Mara commentary!
I’d like to see commentaries for The Hunt for Red October, Jaws, and Aliens. My only request for these things is to specify in the title or description which version is being used, since I didn’t realize I was supposed to be watching the theatrical cut and the audio sync was all over the map.
I love this. I synced this to my movie.
Hot damn I can’t wait to have time to watch this.
This was great! Next up, a commentary for any Quentin Tarantino movie.
I've watched this movie countless times... Thinking the dog's name was "Mobart" 😂😂😂.. why?? I don't know, that's what I hear in that tunnel scene. Glad that multiple shots into the ID4 drinking game, at 1am Dan can change my world forever. LOL
Only fair that you do a SPACEBALLS commentary, for Mara, and a last ditch effort to get Dan to appreciate comedy gold!
Love hearing the commentary but I'd recommend watching the movie first, then watching it again right after. That way there is less dead air because you arent watching it as you commentate.
Callsigns are used to identify individual military personnel or government officials on mission or in transit
1:51:00 I recently watched a documentary on the World Wars. According to that, the reason Hitler has his thin mustache is that he had a wider one that wouldn't allow his gas mask to properly seal in WWI.
When Mara said she would wear her Coveralls for Hunt for Rec October - you sold me sir, To Patreon I go!!
How I Adore that movie
Yessss love this idea!
I really hope this doesn't get taken down. I can't watch it today unfortunately.
I tried watching this along with the version on AMC right now, HUGE fail. I'll have to find my DVD copy in the garage and try again.
What an awesome idea 👌
Independence Dan!!
Great idea! At least for movies that everyone has seen.
1:36:39 - Recommendations for future commentary:
Back to the Future (celebrated 35th anniversary today)
Crimson Tide (I'm really enjoying Mara's commentary on naval procedures)
Any of the TNG Trek movies
'Lock n Load' is a term used in arming firing weapons
I've never seen Independence day before, so I guess now is a great time.
I assume without Dan's commentary... Don't watch a movie for the first time with a commentary track, lol.
Great fun! Oh!! Do Dogma next!
There is an extended cut version. It featured some more background on Randy Quaid’s character family among other additions.
I checked it on my computer and it stayed synced up - I wonder if the DVD framerate might be different than watching it on the computer (24fps vs 30fps). Or if you're watching a DVD that's not NTSC, that could cause a drift. Something I'll look into for next time!

Can we please get a show where Dan recaps all the MTV Movie awards?
Wow, cool, I know how my night is going to be.
are there more commentaries on Patreon?
