    Patrick Tatopoulos did an amazing job of the creating the alien art style. Its sorta like the classic gray alien and silver disk design but much more stylized and modern. Big fan of he's work. Btw 25:17 is a cut alien scene where they are planning on attacking the earth like a big gathering which was planned for movie. Its never been shown besides in concept art.

    This movie has just gorgeous special effects. New sci-fi movies hardly compare to this, relying too much on cgi..

    Still better than the CGI crap fest we have today.
    Even Emmerich's White House Down effects look really shit compared to Independence Day.
    ID4 Oscar for Visual Effects was really deserved. I miss such effects today.

      I believe the problem with practical effects today is the amount of time the director is given to prepare the movie for filming. Like, John Carpenter's _the Thing_. He had a year to prepare for that, and nowadays, it's down to 3 months for prep, at least for some movies.

    I grew up looking star wars movies then ID4 and fifth element. I was arguing with a younger man about how practical and miniature effects look more real and ages better. He was desagreee telling me all arts evolve constantly' so early 3d looks bad ( for example 3d jabba the hut in star wars dvd version of Episode 4 ) because it was the early process, miniatures we're pretty much top of the art in ID4, star wars in other way was using first techniques but modeling was already established.
    So, his point was 3d will get better and better then you won't spot in the future what is true or not and his conclusion was that miniatures are not better than 3D.
    I can understand his point of view, we reach something huge with Gravity or Avatar for exemple . but it's seems before that miniatures best movies were a combination of hard work and also a good movie stand alone. Now armies of 3d artists with dozens of companies work on movies.
    The lightening is something very important and can make a movie look good or bad and maybe it was that point so few worked instead of big, greasy, pop 3d effects were there is no search of hide 3d but show most of it ( Hobbit )
    The eyes still tell me that miniatures movie with practical effect have some unique feeling, it fits perfectly in TV because it's nearly a original size of what you are seeing and 3d can't reproduce that sense of feeling the volume, the density and realness of the elements.
    Considering how tight the budget was and how this happen. I'm so happy to have grown up with this movie. After star wars, that was my main movie then avatar came after that. Marvels in other hand were a great long series of movie with great characters, but not so much droping jaw special effects.

    • @acecodemaster1337
      @acecodemaster1337 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@harvestercommander3250 It used to be hard, but I promise you the guys at ILM and Weta Digital can do it in their sleep. Not all CGI sucks, but I think the problem is nowadays CGI can be easily outsourced at lower cost and quicker turnaround times than ever before, and that leads to it being overused in places were practical effects would have been looked more compelling.

      I never saw ID4 in cinema, only on DVD. To this day, the effects still look spectacular to me. Then I watched IDR in the cinema but the CGI, while still looking awesome, didn't really blow me away, even though the destruction was on a way bigger scale. Well executed practical effects and real explosions are tangible and can never be beat with CGI.
