A significant amount of my childhood was spent in Hawaii, and much of my family still lives in the islands. However, I avoid this airline like the proverbial plague. A major problem is that they tend to be "cheap" and somewhat deceptive in their business practices. If you had not upgraded to "extra comfort", you would have had to pay for a blanket, which I believe costs $12 in economy - worse yet, there is nothing on their website which warns passengers of this charge/situation. Most people (if not all) flying to Hawaii do not normally dress for a cold climate, and this is reflected in the volume of complaints from passengers that the cabin temperature is too cold. As for the advertised hot meal in economy, there are comments by passengers that the "meal" served is extremely "cheap" and substandard. In short, Hawaiian is not a world class airline. On foreign routes to New Zealand, Australia, and Japan, their national carriers are definitely a class above Hawaiian on multiple parameters. On domestic routes, Delta and even Alaska still outshines Hawaiian.
Clark Vincent Ga-as ....the flights were cancelled because there is too much corruption at the airport ( MNL)... Our flights were always full but barely breaking even... Imagine getting"special" handling charges regarding catering or fuel. We make more money flying to Japan anyway... Who needs to go to a third world country anyway
Alaska is also generally more affordable if you book at a decent time, I am a born and raised Alaska and have flown on both airlines, The food was bland, the flight attendants were great but I would rather pay 9.00 usd for cheese, 7 crackers and grapes, then eat tasteless and sit in a cabin that is always in a uncomfortable tempature for a more expensive ticket
I have no idea what you are talking about (especially what "I flew regular" exactly means in airline class and routing), but I can only logically assume that you flew on a foreign route to be given the free blanket. My information came from a colleague who flew from the west coast to Hawaii with his family, and needed to purchase blankets because the temperature on the plane was so very cold. However, I did some research again, and could NOT find any information on Hawaiian's website concerning the availability of free blankets on the Hawaii to mainland USA domestic routings, or for that matter, if there were charges for blankets. But, I didn't stop there and checked the Skytrax airline reviews listing for Hawaiian Airlines. There are multiple complaints from economy passengers on the Hawaii to mainland routes about the cabin being so cold, and having to pay $10 per blanket (most recent one being April 30, 2019). Also, there were even more complaints from economy passengers about the low quality of the food on both foreign and domestic US mainland routes (most recent being September 1, 2019). (Note, there are many complaints regarding other issues with Hawaiian.) However, worst of all was a March 2017 report from the Los Angeles Times about a 66 year old passenger on one of Hawaiian's Las Vegas to Honolulu flights. After take-off from McCarran International Airport the male passenger complained that the cabin temperature was extremely cold. After asking for a blanket, he was told that it would cost $12. "The man became upset and said he shouldn't have to pay because it was so cold." The passenger asked to speak to the airline's corporate office, and the flight crew provided the phone number where an in-flight call was made. While talking to a company representative, the passenger allegedly said, "I would like to take someone behind the woodshed for this." As a result of that statement, the plane landed at LAX. According to an officer for the Los Angeles Police Department (name of officer withheld here, but is visible in the LA Times article) which handles LAX, the passenger was NOT arrested, NOR charged with any sort of violation, NOR was there any further investigation. It's important to note that LAPD viewed the matter as a complaint about the charge for the blanket (given the cold temperature of the plane), while the airline flight crew provided him with the corporate phone number to report his complaint. As to the passenger's statement about taking somebody behind the woodshed" for the $12 charge, the LAPD officer appeared astonished that "they diverted the aircraft because of that statement". News commentary about this incident was summed up best in the following statement, it was "the most ridiculous reason for a flight diversion". It may be that Hawaiian very recently changed their "blanket policy" on domestic Hawaii to mainland US routes. If not, consider yourself lucky that you received a free blanket. Otherwise, I stand by my original comments. Even more so, based on the passenger reviews in Skytrax, I double-down on my opinion that Hawaiian is NOT a world class airline and one that should be avoided when there are other higher quality air carriers.

Yes. Because your going against the rotation of the earth. For example. My local airport shannon in ireland has flights to boston. The outbound is 6 hours. But the return is often under 5 hours.
@@oliverjumelle Specifically, you're going against the jet stream on west bound flights which is why westbound flights are longer then eastbound flights. The actual rotation of the earth doesn't have anything to do with it--it's purely due to stronger headwinds going westbound from the jet stream.

Fwiw, I like to visit Hawaii every year or so, even all the way from New York! I’ve flown both Hawaiian from JFK, and United from Newark. Newark happens to be more convenient for me. But I will go out of my way to fly Hawaiian instead. Hawaiian wins hands-down over the same route. More/better food, friendlier cabin crew, cleaner aircraft. The seats in Economy are awful on both.
I had a great experience from JFK to Honolulu on Hawaiian Airlines and I thought it was great service and the food not bad. I know to get the extra legroom seats next time, though.
Hawaiian is usually the cheapest flight to the Hawaiian islands, so I don’t except first class amenities at a budget. I have flown first class on Hawaiian, and if you can afford it, it’s well worth the comfort. I’m looking to visit my family and friends this up coming year and currently first class is $356 more than economy. However, you get your two checked bags included in the $375, a $70 value; making first class $305 more than economy. So, $50 an hour for the added amenities and comfort. Actually the rental car cost more than the flights.
I believe the earphones are complimentary if you ask because they actually want you to use it. The ones they have for sale in their magazine is for people that want to take a little souvenir with them for someone else but I could be wrong. It has been a year since I last flown with them
Thank you for the upload. Carriers can review videos like yours to learn about customer expectations and feedback without having to run anonymous surveys, which traditionally aren’t the best.
thank you for the video, I've only flown with Hawaiian airlines once and it wasn't the best experience, it was from HNL to LAX in regular economy and the legroom was horrible. definitely be thankful you upgraded.
Wow !! I really loved this one !! I especially loved that complimentary snack bag !!! 😍👍👍😃🎁I have never seen/ heard such a thing on a flight ✈️ especially in an economy class !? I got one ( box )on Amtrak business class before & was cute / yummy !! Such a nice touch !! And yes, that lounge is not any special, but air-conditioned & nice comfy lounge to have a cuppa & kill time ,so is the outdoor courtyard ( I believe there's another one at the airport !! )& those are different from other airports in the U.S. besides outdoor bridge ,not sure what to call it, to the gates...etc. I love that about the airport in Hawaii. I am currently thinking of our trip to Honolulu for my mom's birthday this coming January ( 2023 )! As her birthday gift ! We've been to Hawaii many times ,she used to live there when she was in her 20's,too ! So, it'll be a very good thing / fun time if I'll be able to do so ! This video was very nice !! I thought they definitely served hot meals as I know tgey still do that between here L.A.& Hawaii & you were going to Boston ! Lol. But, that was a bad sign ...usually ,if we see others buying/ bringing their own foods in on board !! But,some people do !! Those are who eat a lot !! And feel airplane meals are not enough despite very high calories & tons of preservatives in 'em !! Lol. Sometimes I do so,too ,because I wanna eat healthier ( I am a vegetarian )& know they won't have good foods for me ! Lol. Or in case they make a mistake & I'll miss my food ( had happened once ! ) ,or I missed my breakfast & staving ...these are times I do buy my own foods before flying ! Lol. Thanks for this fun video ! 👍👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶✈️💞
As a kama'aina, Hawaiian Airlines is my preferred carrier between Australia and the east coast of the US. I've flown this flight and have no problem with it. I also fly HNL/JFK regularly. Good airline.
Bring back the old days. I used to work for American Trans Air (ATA). Our service between SFO and HNL was :Your blanket was a large beach towel that you could take with you, Hot Towels, Theme drink beverage with mac nuts, Hot meal with a choice, more beverages, a dessert cart, more beverages with mac nuts, hot towels again and a mint before landing. That was a 4:30 to 5:00 flight and all coach. 362 passengers. We knew how to do it right.
Honolulu to Boston is the longest domestic flight in the US but did you know that the longest domestic flight is French, it is during the Covid when french people couldn't been in the USA so the flights which traditionally stop in the Us to go to French Polynesia after couldn' t stop in SFO or in LAX that's why Air Tahiti Nui realised a direct flight between Papeete in French Polynesia and Paris CDG, the flight lasted 16 hours to cover the 15.700 km between Papeete and Paris with a 787-9 Dreamliner !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well i'll be flying Hawaiian Air for my 50th 2 week bday trip next October. However, i'm going in business class from Boston to Honolulu direct. So no economy for me as i think a 10+hr non stop flight warrants a lie flat seat.
yes... frankly one of the most attractive best managed and connected small market airports in country...and i grew up here when we called it Gallatin field and feel like tourism is overwhelming us ...but i sure like flying in and out...dont tell your friends lol...too late
Hawaiian Airlines in-flight ambiance is unrivaled. I've flown on American and United, American especially is so depressing and their flight attendants looked sloppy. Also Hawaiian is very generous when it comes to in-flight meals/beverage service. Plus you have to give them props for the most creative in-flight safety video lol.
I think you were very generous about the catering. This was a 9 - 10 hour flight, domestic only by technicality, and international flights of that length or even much less almost always serve a dinner. That pasta thing (not even up to Lean Cuisine standards) hardly counts, and I'm sure that most people threw away most of the hodgepodge in the snack bag. If that catering is up to US standards, I'm ashamed of it.
every meal is for purchase on United when you do the HNL-Newark, NJ flight, which is probably 30-45 mins shorter than this flight.....United also sells Basic Economy fares on this route, which means you can not select your own seat or bring a rollerboard into the cabin. Kinda puts things into perspective, doesn't it?
Wow! Baked Rigatoni! A favorite of mine. Otherwise, looks like a great flight indeed. Seems like all the good things about Hawaiian I heard are bang on! Another great review. Thank you!
For domestic flight, Hawaiian is good since they server free hot meals but they serve save meals to international. I would prefer to fly other international carrier if I fly internationally since their meals so much better comparing to Hawaiian airlines.
Great video David, really enjoyed it! Looks like most of your expectations were met :) Hawaiian is a great domestic airline, I really enjoyed flying them from HNL-LAX some years back. Great to see you get a hot meal as well, good to hear it tasted well! Brendan
You should come back to Oahu as they remodeled and it is insane! One half is the same but there’s a whole new terminal that is so modern. I also recommend trying first class whenever you fly Hawaiian as economy is sometimes disappointing.
I expect a lot of screaming kids running up and down the aisle with parents not giving a care because they only paid £5 for the flight, blood supply cut off to my feet due to no legroom, a guy who’s drunk too much at the bar before boarding and is kicking off at the cabin crew, and a landing so hard the seat collapses
Flown Hawaiian quite a few times when they started flying out of San Diego and the last time being 2006 on a 767. From what I saw the catering has really gone downhill. I remember the food being really good and a good sized meal too. And there was so much legroom in economy. I did fly Hawaiian to Australia and it was the worst flight experience I ever had. Go Qantas it’s sooo much better.
I know this is true, because every time I've flown on HA the experience keeps getting glaringly WORSE than the last time I flew with the rudest, most unfriendly airline in the USA.
Further proof that the US domestic market need to open up to foreign carriers who can beat US carriers on all fronts from ultra budget to luxury transcontinental. Ryanair could undercut even Spirit. Full service carriers like Emirates could compete in trunk routes like LA - NYC. The fact that it would enrage executives like Ed Bastian would be icing on the cake.
Thanks for the report. It’s a shame HA does not provide complimentary head phones and amenity kits for a long haul flight. Love their seats config as 2-4-2.
Strange name for a lounge David !! Lovely vision on take off !! Solid flight..assume it was an A 330 or similar ? Great review and Honest as always...well done mate !!
If I was your height I'm flying extra legroom or Premium Eco always if I can't get business class. But France has long haul domestic flights. Also all Hawaiian air flights to and from central/ Eastern US have complimentary hot meal service and a snack bag prior to landing I believe.
There is actually a better Priority Pass lounge that is located in the Interisland Terminal (Terminal 1). It is located to the right and upstairs of where you entered for the Security Checkpoint. Much more space, a variety of food, beverages and snacks, etc.
I just flew this route round trip within the past month, in economy. I didn't even look at the menu you were looking at, and asked for ear buds (fully expecting to be charged) and the attendant gave them to us for free. And I misplaced that pair so had to get another on the way back, so it didn't even seem like a YMMV thing, they handed them over readily.
I really liked the Video but in economy you can never expect to get an amenity kit- as much as I know there is only Emirates on very long longhaul flights, turkish airlines (idk if Qatar) and there was the german AirBerlin (doesn't exist anymore).

(Note, there are many complaints regarding other issues with Hawaiian.)
However, worst of all was a March 2017 report from the Los Angeles Times about a 66 year old passenger on one of Hawaiian's Las Vegas to Honolulu flights.

RedJive 605, yes we love Delta at MSP! They are such a great airline! And I can’t wait for the A350 to begin service next year! We even just got the A220, of course from the one and only, Delta! 😄
This type of video is such a great and unique concept from your side, which make your channel stand out a lot from other flight review channels, and in my opinion makes you the best one of them.
15 views 22 like the magic of simply aviation :-)
14 August, you travelled on my birthday! 😁
Awesome video man! Liked
I think hawaiian is the best US airline, but JetBlue is a strong competitor.
why? no their not , Hawaiian needs a fleet upgrade,,..
I didn’t mean in the business sector I was thinking more in overall airlines and their products
JetBlue and Hawaiian are sky partners.
@@briancebu7209 Hawaiian's fleet isn't really that old. Their A330s aren't even ten years old and their A321neos aren't even two years old. Their oldest fleet is their 717s that they fly on interisland routes. They'll also start taking delivery of their 787-9 in 2021 (they ordered 10 with an option for 10 more)
@@LBJackson4 why do you think Hawaiian is a good airline?
It’s actually longer from Boston to Honolulu
GalaxyMaster I was thinking the same. Hawaiian flight 89 is actually the longest domestic flight in the US.
Flew this same route but on United from Newark and had a VASTLY worse experience lol
you shouldnt expect much from united imo
Sky so clear and blue. Water crystal clear omg hawaii you are amazing.

Changi Airport: *Am I a joke to you?*
__e __ Sochi Airport also has a little "park" inside of its new terminal
David, I really enjoy ur videos, especially the brutally honest series. Keep up with the good wotk!!!!!!!
2pm is Rush hour at HNL-sometimes they can’t assign a gate until another flight leaves. There’s a bank of west coast flights-HA2 to LAX, one to SFO and PDX as we’ll departing in that 1300-1500 time frame.
Didn’t even know Hawaiian flew to other
parts of the east coast, I thought it was just the west coast, New York, Asia and Oceania
Anyway great video mate with in my opinion a great airline 👍
Edit: Just googled their destinations, they fly to a lot more of the US than I thought
Jack Summers They are a larger airline that one may think. I believe their fleet is larger than Virgin Atlantic.
Jack Summers New York is on the east coast
robert mccoy yep
They fly out of Austin Texas for 8 hours
anyone know what material the blanket is? I went on one recently and it was the same material as the one at home, however I don't know what it is...
Wie immer gutes Video, David!
If you want a cool boarding pass the coolest boarding pass in the world is SWISS Airlines
I agree about the boarding pass being a souvenir of the flight. The same without the baggage tags.
The Trip Reports And The Brutally Honestly Are Really Good Videos
Thanks Simply Aviation for all Brutally Honest videos so far
Edit:I got a tip if you want to show the boarding pass,Blur the scanning code, partially reveal your front name like David or Felix, just show the location of your destination and your seat.If you guys don't know how it's done, check QFS Aviation where the part of the ticket is shown
azim iskandar does is matter though? By the time they've uploaded, the passes would have already expired. Also their last names aren't exactly a secret if you're a long time follower.
It's just a name that probably everyone knows anyway.
Awesome video David! Greetings from Sweden🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
Colorful boarding pass just seem to be a waste of resources.
His was on his mobile
This is the best website for airline trip-reports, hands down. Great work! Keep it up!
*Correction: best TH-cam channel for airline trip-reports
David thank you for Reviewing I’m going on this plane tomorrow!! To Hawaii!!
Nice, I love your videos!
You should do either ord, ewr or iad to Hawaii on United standard economy and rip them to shreds on how terrible they are
YES!! I'm dreading my up coming flight on United. I just keep reminding myself I'll be in Hawaii when it lands.
What type of Aircraft were you flying on for this flight?
The engines were super quiet. That was a pleasant plus (+). 👍👍
Really liked that.♥️
Oscar Grammy A330
I believe the earphones are complimentary if you ask because they actually want you to use it. The ones they have for sale in their magazine is for people that want to take a little souvenir with them for someone else but I could be wrong. It has been a year since I last flown with them
I need more videos of Brutally honest episodes! ♥️
Thank you for the upload. Carriers can review videos like yours to learn about customer expectations and feedback without having to run anonymous surveys, which traditionally aren’t the best.
Great video! Thank u for recording the takeoff and the snack menu . Very helpful 👌
thank you for the video, I've only flown with Hawaiian airlines once and it wasn't the best experience, it was from HNL to LAX in regular economy and the legroom was horrible. definitely be thankful you upgraded.
So no economy for me as i think a 10+hr non stop flight warrants a lie flat seat.
your vlog is really good and like every thing in your vlog is clear and amazing.
Can you do a trip report on hawaiin airlines ? I would love to see it! Especially a non-domestic flight! thanks (:
This video was SUPER helpful!!! Thank you very much.
Flew economy on Hawaiian twice in August - to and from NYC. No issues at all, couldn’t have gone better.
Good to hear You Bro 😊.. Thanks for amazing Videos 🙏😊
8:28 congrats, lady, you touched an A330
I love you David your my favorite youtuber I love planes
Looks like a fantastic airline! Hope to fly them soon!
yes... frankly one of the most attractive best managed and connected small market airports in country...and i grew up here when we called it Gallatin field and feel like tourism is overwhelming us ...but i sure like flying in and out...dont tell your friends lol...too late
Why won't you do a regular tripreport of this flight? Have you tried their inter island short haul?
You're wonderful. Love your video, and planes of course. 😊
this is a good channel
Nice video, very honest!!👍
I think you were very generous about the catering. This was a 9 - 10 hour flight, domestic only by technicality, and international flights of that length or even much less almost always serve a dinner. That pasta thing (not even up to Lean Cuisine standards) hardly counts, and I'm sure that most people threw away most of the hodgepodge in the snack bag. If that catering is up to US standards, I'm ashamed of it.
US domestic flights are barebones when it comes to service and amenities, even on first class.
Bob Rogers don't expect good things on domestic flights
every meal is for purchase on United when you do the HNL-Newark, NJ flight, which is probably 30-45 mins shorter than this flight.....United also sells Basic Economy fares on this route, which means you can not select your own seat or bring a rollerboard into the cabin.
BRUTALLY HONEST: Ryanair?
I expect a lot of screaming kids running up and down the aisle with parents not giving a care because they only paid £5 for the flight, blood supply cut off to my feet due to no legroom, a guy who’s drunk too much at the bar before boarding and is kicking off at the cabin crew, and a landing so hard the seat collapses
now that would be good, come on david we love your vid's make our day and why not fly 2/3 flights around europe in the same day
I would rather swim.
I love your #bruatllyhonest videos and your trip report videos they are sooooooooooo amazing!!😍😏
Beautiful take off footage!
First time I see an airplane with reverse thrust still on when taxing off the rwy
I totally agree. Foreign carriers like Emirates Singapore air France could give our air carriers a run for their money. And do a better job!
I really liked the Video but in economy you can never expect to get an amenity kit- as much as I know there is only Emirates on very long longhaul flights, turkish airlines (idk if Qatar) and there was the german AirBerlin (doesn't exist anymore).
that take off was like a snail crawling
