I absolutely love them! The fact that the ear canal is not blocked is a huge plus. You can still hear what’s going on around you but, at the time you can hear perfectly the sound coming from your aeropex. I accidentally showered with them and I was so worried that I had destroyed them but not, absolutely nothing happened to them. Love them!
Great review; you nailed it. I was going to replace my Jaybirds with the Jaybird 2, but decided not to compromise and bought the Aftershokz Aeropex for running and cycling outside and Bose Sport buds for the gym. Both are perfect; I knew the Bose sounded great, a good step up from the Jaybirds, but wanted awareness outdoors; the Aeropex have exceeded my expectations for this and are more than good enough for quality and loudness, as well as being very comfortable to wear.
Great review. The only thing I would add is that when you hold the two volume buttons together, it changes the eq to less bass for when you are wearing the earplugs. You can change it back by holding the two buttons again for when not wearing earplugs.
I appreciate this well rounded detailed video you’ve made, thank you! I have terrible pain from ear buds. While I have excellent traditional over-the-ear style headphones, they are not convenient for school and work. I’ve been doing research to make the smartest purchase for bone conduction as it can be quite pricey on a budget. So thank you again for this amazing product review my friend!
Thank you for your feedback Lindsay, I'm glad to hear you found the video useful. I have a few more open-ear style headphone reviews coming so stay tuned, you might find something that suits your needs even better...
Can we talk about the customer service? I had a replacement sent within days after one of conductors got snapped. Even snapped they still worked. Weren’t rigid but worked. Over all it was a great experience!
I have these and what’s really neat is that the sounds become more intense if you actually put hearing protection ear plugs in your ear canal. I totally thought the opposite reaction would happen but nope. I will likely buy these again if I ever lose my shokz
Ear plugs will also cause moisture and evaporation to happen causing ear wax in the ear. Not taking care of ear wax can cause ear infections like cholesteatoma in the ear. So don’t wear ear plugs too long.
I'm on my 2nd pair of aeropex and I used all day with one charge and loved!! I'm a heavy equipment operator (bulldozer/ grader/loaders etc) and worked perfectly. I wish they have bigger sizes!
Spot on review! I have a pair because of ear problems that are compounded by in- ear buds. I have had a long term use issue, though. The volume up / power button has broken twice on mine. I admit I use them a lot for podcasts and phone calls. So maybe I’m using that button’s lifespan in a short time - nine months.
When you put in the ear plugs, try changing your EQ by pressing the vol up and down buttons together for 2 sec. You will notice the "boom" sound is greatly reduce.
another excellent review thanks a lot. very interesting thing i dont know if it works good for regular listening or just good for outdoor sport activity and hear around
Would you recommend these in a noisy gym setting where you want to hear your own music and nothing else ? I would think the usual style that sits inside the ear would be better in that environment although I don’t like cramming stuff in my ears. Thanks for your input.
I believe I mentioned it in the video too that in for gym use these might not be the best because there usually is loud music coming from the speakers which could overpower the sound of your headphones. At least that is my experience
I work in a factory doing skilled labor that has banned in ear buds. I listen mostly to audiobooks and my job doesn't allow me to stand in one spot, so speakers aren't possible. Would these be good for that environment if I wore ear plugs?
Fascinating technology, but I'd prefer over- or in-ear headphones since the bone conduction ones, like you point out, isn't blocking other sounds out due to the fact they're not blocking the ear canals. (Coming from a personal point of view, nowadays being a gym rat and not an outdoor athlete - yet) Great review as usual! Keep it up my friend!
The technology has its advantages but it's not meant to be used in the gym for sure. But this was the first time I felt safe listening to music on the bike so that's kind of a big deal
I lost my adtershokz last year and bought another set of a different type. I asked my blue tooth to forget my aftershokz. I found them again and tried to re-pair to my Bluetooth but I can’t seem to get this done. Any tips?
Do you wear two hearing aids and stream to both hearing aids? You see… using one hearing aid and streaming to one hearing aid causes us to not hear phone calls and audio very well. So using two hearing aid helps us hear phone calls and audio better.
I returned my Aftershokz Aeropex today. I bought it yesterday. It was great in every way, except one thing: I expected it to be ONLY bone conduction, and not both bone conduction and the regular in-ear headphone. When I turned it on and put it on the table, it was so loud that I could hear it from outside my room! It was like a loudspeaker. I don't understand why they added the regular in-ear speaker function to it. It was really a pity that I had to return it. Does anyone know any headphone that has ONLY bone conduction sound, and not in-ear sound?
@@AndysTechTone Thanks for your reply. I also held it in my hand. I turned the volume up to "middle", and could hear it clearly when it was in my hand, ie a distance of about 30 centimetres from my ears. When I put it on highest level, it was really loud and clear. I would not call it headphone anymore, but loudspeaker! If it has no traditional speaker, then the problem was only my specific device, and not a general one. That is still strange. Can you please test this by holding your Aeropex in your hand (while on highest level) and see if you hear anything?
@@sc-- I realize this is several months old but feel the need to reply for anyone looking at these or other bone conduction headphones (perhaps the newly announced OpenRun Pros). Sound is produced when the transducers cause something (e.g., your cheekbone) to vibrate upon physical contact. Since the headphones themselves are a physical object, they will necessarily vibrate since they physically contain the transducers. In effect, anything the transducers touch-even the headphone casing-becomes in some sense a speaker. This “leakage” could theoretically be reduced by internal shock absorption and/or dampening, but these would come at a size and weight penalty that might not be worth the tradeoff. I’m hoping the new OpenRun Pros will improve the leakage issue as previous generations have, but as of now it seems to just come with the territory. Hope this helps!
If the situation calls for it, sure you can max it out and probably at a lower risk of damaging your ears than with traditional earbuds. But then vibrations and distortion might become an issue

@@AndysTechTone I am also worried about wearing it with spectacle. Will the back of my ear feel painful with spectacle and this headphone is donning together
I guess they’d great if you need music while running around and being active. However, they’d probably be a pain in the ass for someone relaxing at home in bed because the frame will probably be pressing against the back of your neck.
By the way, I plan to move to Dublin this next month and am trying to prepare for running on busier roads - do you think the Aeropex is worth the extra cost over the OpenMove? Never tried bone conduction headphones!
Thats what I found, I believe it applies to most Shokz headphones: Start with your headphones powered off. Enter pairing mode by pressing and holding volume+ until the LED flashes red and blue and Audrey says "pairing." Double-click the multifunction button. I own these and agree with all the points made by the reviewer. They do have a purpose but by no means are they “audiophile” quality.
No one should expect audiophile quality from bone conduction technology but they offer many other advantages
Brilliant video as always
