  • Up to a certain level, ingesting more protein is beneficial for muscle growth and recovery. However, past that level, there will be no added benefit. Listen to Chris explain why and what the impact will be.

    Ted Naiman, author of the Protein to Energy diet says that gluconeogenesis is demand driven, not supply driven. That would mean that consuming more protein would not produce more glucose. You only produce the glucose you need from protein. I would like to see the arguments for both perspectives laid out in a logical manner.

    Just came across your channel. Great stuff. I’m no bodybuilder by any means but just like to play sports and work out. Non-enhanced of course. From what you’ve said here, I’ve gathered that you would recommend a natural to eat a large portion of his daily protein intake in one meal instead of spreading it out throughout the day? I’ve actually been doing this anyway but somewhat unintentionally. I do IF and don’t feel like eating protein until the evening after I’ve exercised and I usually put down about 150g protein in like a 3 hour window

    True: Protein can convert to Glucose.
    Forgotten: The body then has to get rid of the nitrogen (N) from the protein. This is done by first producing ammonia (NH4). If your sweat smells from ammonia you are taking too much protein or have high muscle breakdown. High levels of ammonia in the bloodstream is BAD.

      Ammonia is sold cheaply as a household detergent in grocery stores. Here in Norway, and maybe other places, it's called "salmiakk". Buy a bottle and check the smell. Great detergent for greasy surfaces. The smell is more sharp/stinging than pungent. If your sweat start to smell during workout it's most probably from ammonia anyway.

    Great video! So diagestable for Everyone, I agree 99%, The 1 % i dont is that it isn’t quite correct that high protein intakes will stop fat mobilisation because u will still need to respect calorie intake, so even if u are eating 2 gramos per pound u just making less room for other macros and maybe have less performance or recovery and that impacts on The stress factor for The training raising negative hormones bla bla, just a no go on that choice, but Certainly fat wont be stopped if calories are on point. This are good points, but I would appreciate if the author divide into stages, eg bulking, maintain (recomp), cutting and said about the preferable protein amount.
    For example, while on bulk, you don't need to eat 1.2g of protein, even 1g of protein, because your total calories surplus preserve muscles from loss.
    But it's necessary to eat 1 - 1.2g on cutting when you're in a deficit.

    So if you're emphasizing the importance of a "spike" to trigger protein synthesis, could it be beneficial to consume lower protein for a few days and then spike it high one day? As a 175 pound guy (on TRT) I usually consume between 80 to 120 per day. I stopped concentrating so much on getting a gram per pound of bodyweight because it didn't seem to make a difference whether I got 100 or 180.

    Gluconeogensis occurs when blood glucose is low and the mediator is glucagon which is released when blood glucose is low and it signals the liver to start gluconeogensis to produce glucose. Usually this occurs when fasting for a prolonged period of time. I have not heard that excess protein is utilized by the liver via gluconeogensis but I could be wrong and if I am, someone tell me. I’m an upcoming doctor.

    There are plenty of studies that have shown the high end limit for natural athletes is ~1.6 g/lb. Also, one variance to this is age. The older you get the less efficient your body is at using protein. This is especially true for the over 40 crowd, and they may need more than the recommend amount for this population.

    Does protein requirements differ between newbie, intermediate and pro level builders? I can imagine newbies require a lot for the quick gains that happen then intermediates level off for many years until they reach a pro level and/or use PED’s with greater muscle mass getting damaged hence needing more protein?

    • @jakubb3368
      @jakubb3368 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean the minimum level required to get maximum results? It's related to your muscle mass - the more muscles you have the more protein you need. Optimally protein requirement should be calculated based on lean body mass, but eating 10 grams less or 20 grams more than "optimal" is not really that big deal.
